Full rankings at RTN.

I’m back! I go away for one second and all the judges are like, “10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10s FOR EVERYONE.” When the cat’s away. I promise never to leave you again. Two 10.000s were awarded this weekend, along with five 9.975s.

Oklahoma solidified its place at the top of the rankings with a hundred billion 9.9s and a juicy away score. The Sooners are starting to create a margin that will be tough to make up as long as we’re still basing the rankings on average. Even #2 LSU would have to beat Oklahoma by well over a point this coming weekend to make up that margin, which seems highly unlikely.

Utah decided to remind everyone that they, like, invented SEC scoring and moved up to 4th with a 197.625. Judges giving 10s for non-stuck DTYs are the new bomber jacket. The team did very well to full out lineups without Schwab, dropping some potential scoring on VT, UB, BB, but not to a level that showed up dramatically in the final total.

Kentucky is becoming the major story of January, moving up to #6 and using the AA power of Korth, Dukes, Stuart, and Hyland to put up competitive lineups even without the presumed important contributions from Waltz and Kwan. Next weekend’s two meets will be a strategic test for a team reliant on a few key AAers. Do you rest people?

We saw a number of teams hit season highs and yet fall in the rankings because the the 196.9s are beginning to flow. Lower 196s aren’t going to get teams very far right now if they’re hoping for a spot in the top 20.

Non-famous stars of the week
Gymnasts from schools outside the top 25 who scored over 9.900

Sabrina Garcia, Penn State, Bars – 9.950
Her second 9.950 of the season

Khasia Hislop, North Carolina, Floor – 9.925
Reminding us that North Carolina has gymnasts other than Morgan Lane

Kendall Valentin, Eastern Michigan, Bars – 9.925
Eastern Michigan didn’t completely fall away post-Santos, post-Slocum

Katy Clements, Central Michigan, Floor – 9.925
Macey Hilliker, Central Michigan, Floor – 9.925
CMU lost a major class after 2015, the juniors reminding us of the good days

Rachel Stypinski, Kent State, Floor – 9.925
The queen of this category, would be a star even on top-10 teams

20 thoughts on “Week 3 Rankings and Notes”

  1. Wait what happened to Garner for Arkansas? I need her in my Fantasy Gymnastics beam score.

    1. Garner had her arm in a sling (shoulder or arm injury) and is expected to be out for a few weeks.)

  2. Kupets hit 49.9 in 2009 in NCAA finals, though 2006 is the last time an AA score hit 49.875+ in the regular season.

  3. Do we know why Claire Hammen isn’t competing? And does anyone have a good guess on when Copiak may be back in line-ups after her back spasms? Do we know if anything is up with Ella Douglas? Looking only at scores it seems she had a bad meet the week before last, and then last week she wasn’t competing at all.

    1. I do have both Copiak and Douglas I’m my fantasy gym team, have been wondering the same!

      1. Thank you, Anon! 🙂 Then I’ll hold off on trading her, and hope for the best regarding her health and return to line-ups.

  4. Any idea where Desch and Mahoney will be in line ups, or was last week just a tease?

  5. UGh I commented this on the wrong Week Ranking and Notes,
But will Maegan Chant be back next week?

    please i hope so

    1. I think so. The Gator’s interviews after the meet on Friday highly implied that Chant was just being rested for the week and that it wasn’t anything long term.

  6. Spencer should open up a discussion forum regarding “Who knows what happened to…?” 😀
