RQS Outlook 2017

RQS season approaches. Gird your loins. In preparation for this most hallowed of unnecessarily complicated seasons beginning next Monday, this is a breakdown of where all the teams currently stand in the RQS picture.

For a refresher (or just a fresher) on how RQS works, please see the RQS Explained page.

Note: A handful of significant teams still don’t have enough meets for RQS as of today, so the current RQS rankings found at the bottom of each team’s table will overstate the actual position of many for the time being. Scores in bold are guaranteed to be included among the six and can no longer be bumped out.

I’ve included my RQS Calculator (Excel file) here for download if you’d like to play around with it yourself to input scores as they come in or check potential scores to see how they would change the rankings. (HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY.) Reader Kaitlyn also has some excellent color-coded Google spreadsheets on team averages and home/away event scores and RQS calculation if you’d like to check those out.

1. OKLAHOMA
Road Score 1  198.075
Road Score 2  197.925
Road Score 3  197.425
Home/Road Score 1  198.025
Home/Road Score 2  197.750
Home/Road Score 3  197.675
RQS  197.760

2. LSU
Road Score 1 197.700

Home/Road Score 1 197.825
Home/Road Score 2 197.475

3. FLORIDA
Road Score 1 197.425
Road Score 2 197.325
Road Score 3 197.100
Home/Road Score 1 197.975
Home/Road Score 2 197.700
Home/Road Score 3 197.600
RQS 197.430
Current RQS rank 3

The top three teams are in perfectly fine shape and could basically coast for the rest of the regular season and still be comfortable getting a #1 seed at a regional, at least if that were their ultimate goal. The major difference among the three at this point is the road scores, accounting for Oklahoma’s superiority and which Florida will have to pick up to challenge the other two.

For next Monday’s rankings, Oklahoma is already guaranteed to retain the #1 ranking, but Florida could move up on LSU.

4. UCLA
Road Score 1 197.325
Road Score 2 197.150
Road Score 3 196.825
Home/Road Score 1 198.125
Home/Road Score 2 195.700
Home/Road Score 3 X
RQS N/A
Current RQS rank Unranked

The Bruins don’t have enough scores for an RQS yet, but with a two-meet weekend coming up, they’ll have a chance to both fill out the set of six scores and drop that ugly 195, setting up a much more comfortable RQS scenario than we’ve seen for this team since probably 2012. A weekend average of 197.000 would put UCLA around 197 in RQS as well and comfortably into 4th for now.

5. UTAH
Road Score 1 197.150
Road Score 2 196.900
Road Score 3 196.525
Home/Road Score 1 197.625
Home/Road Score 2 196.625
Home/Road Score 3 196.450
RQS 196.730
Current RQS rank 5
6. ALABAMA
Road Score 1 197.225
Road Score 2 197.050
Road Score 3 196.700
Home/Road Score 1 197.825
Home/Road Score 2 197.100
Home/Road Score 3 195.850
RQS 196.785
Current RQS rank  4

Because of that weekend of 195s, Alabama currently sits behind Utah on average. The Tide would be ahead of Utah in RQS, however, as a result of dropping one of those 195s and being able to count more 197s than Utah can. Utah has just the one very high score so far this year, which gets dropped. With another 195 still to drop, Alabama is also more likely to increase its RQS this coming weekend.

7. BOISE STATE
Road Score 1 197.075
Road Score 2 196.400
Road Score 3 196.225
Home/Road Score 1 197.025
Home/Road Score 2 195.300

8. MICHIGAN
Road Score 1 196.475
Road Score 2 196.025
Road Score 3 195.725
Home/Road Score 1 197.225
Home/Road Score 2 197.050
Home/Road Score 3 195.525
RQS 196.160
Current RQS rank 8

The worry for Michigan is this counting 196.475, which going by recent precedent is not a score befitting a top-10 team. Expect Michigan to move up once those 195s go away, but with just two road meets remaining, the scores in those meets need to be rather high to make up for that 196.4.

9. KENTUCKY
Road Score 1 196.950
Road Score 2 196.150
Road Score 3 195.300
Home/Road Score 1 197.475
Home/Road Score 2 197.100
Home/Road Score 3 195.750
RQS 196.250
Current RQS rank 7

Kentucky’s multiple high scores so far make for a pretty encouraging outlook given two meh 195s still to drop in the remaining five meets and three very usable scores already on the docket.

10. GEORGIA
Road Score 1 196.800
Road Score 2 196.525
Road Score 3 193.600
Home/Road Score 1 197.075
Home/Road Score 2 196.875
Home/Road Score 3 196.500
RQS 196.060
Current RQS rank 9

Georgia’s total is fairly misleading because that 193 is still being counted as a road score, so expect the GymDogs’ RQS to increase quite a bit after this Friday’s away meet, barring disaster. Of greater concern may be those scores nestling around the 196.8s that do not compare favorably to Kentucky’s best three numbers, which will be crucial in the race to make the evening session at SECs this year that increasingly looks like it will come down to these two teams.

11. DENVER
Road Score 1 196.875
Road Score 2 196.500
Road Score 3 195.900
Home/Road Score 1 197.125
Home/Road Score 2 196.350
Home/Road Score 3 195.875
RQS 196.300
Current RQS rank  6

The relative evenness of Denver’s counting scores accounts for the high RQS ranking, but they’ll have to watch out for Georgia, Kentucky, and Oregon State once they’re able to drop some of the lower numbers that Denver has already been able to drop.

12. OREGON STATE
Road Score 1 196.200
Road Score 2 195.575
Road Score 3 194.525
Home/Road Score 1 196.900
Home/Road Score 2 196.700
Home/Road Score 3 196.550
RQS 195.910
Current RQS rank 10

It’s a battle against low road scores for Oregon State. The next two weeks on the road will determine whether OSU is competitive for the top 10.

13. SOUTHERN UTAH
Road Score 1 195.800
Road Score 2 194.325
Road Score 3 X
Home/Road Score 1 196.725
Home/Road Score 2 196.700
Home/Road Score 3 196.150
RQS N/A

That road-score scenario is even more extreme for Southern Utah, as well as for Washington below. With four road meets remaining out of 6, Southern Utah will have to prove the ability to get 196s on the road to have a chance at maintaining this type of ranking. There’s even more urgency in that regard for Washington with just three road meets remaining out of 5 total.

14. WASHINGTON

15. MISSOURI

Home/Road Score 2 195.725
Home/Road Score 3 195.500
RQS 195.875
Current RQS rank  11

Missouri is one of those bunched-up teams where all the scores are fairly similar, meaning they’re unlikely to move up significantly in a given week because the ceiling is quite low. The best they can do this week is drop the 195.500 in favor of the current high score, 196.225, which is a relatively marginal increase.

16 NEBRASKA
Road Score 1 196.550
Road Score 2 196.050
Road Score 3 194.800
Home/Road Score 1 196.825
Home/Road Score 2 195.700
Home/Road Score 3 194.450
RQS 195.510
Current RQS rank  14

I’ve been focusing on Nebraska a lot in the RQS race because they have just the four meets left and little margin for error, but so far they’ve been playing with fire and succeeding. Still some 194s in urgent need of dropping, though.

17. AUBURN
Road Score 1 196.400
Road Score 2 195.800
Road Score 3 195.725
Home/Road Score 1 196.075
Home/Road Score 2 196.075
Home/Road Score 3 195.275
RQS 195.790
Current RQS rank 12

Auburn still has room to grow because of those low 195s, but already having to count a 196.4 is a handicap when trying to move up on teams like Nebraska, Oregon State, and Southern Utah that have shown higher peaks. This weekend’s visit to Alabama is a road score to watch.

18. CAL
Road Score 1 195.725
Road Score 2 195.550

Home/Road Score 2 195.775
Home/Road Score 3 195.525
RQS 195.485
Current RQS rank 16

We’re hitting the point in the season where having a lower score is actually encouraging because it means there’s more opportunity to move up if that score is dropped. In a few weeks, those scores become more scary in a “WE NEED TO DROP THIS RIGHT NOW, BUT LIKE RIGHT NOW” kind of way.

20. GEORGE WASHINGTON

Last year, the final RQS cutoff for the top-18 (so, seeded at regionals) was in the 196.3s. That’s the average to watch among the contending schools.

22. IOWA
Road Score 1 196.175

Arkansas remains in the mix with a 196.325 that’s already able to be used and a 193.9 still to drop, a more encouraging setup than a couple teams ranked right above.

24. WEST VIRGINIA
Road Score 1 195.950

Road Score 3 194.400
Home/Road Score 1 196.300

Four of Arizona’s five remaining meets are on the road, so there’s still time. But, I would be worried about those road scores.

Home/Road Score 3 194.725

Current RQS rank 27

That one home 196.800 makes Minnesota look a lot healthier in average than in RQS, where that 196.800 is not counted because it’s the high score. Once a few more of those unranked teams gets RQSs, Minnesota’s position for making regionals teams may not be very safe at all.

29. EASTERN MICHIGAN
Road Score 1 195.925
Road Score 2 195.400

Home/Road Score 2 194.550
Home/Road Score 3 192.050
RQS 194.495

Case in point, Eastern Michigan currently ranks ahead of Minnesota on RQS and still has a 192.050 to drop.

30. PENN STATE
Road Score 1 193.250
Road Score 2 192.900

Home/Road Score 1 195.925
Home/Road Score 2 195.850

Penn State is in a more urgent version of Arizona’s scenario, also with four remaining road meets but desperately needing three good scores in those four meets.

31. KENT STATE

Kent State has a reputation for missing out on regionals in recent years because of low road scores, but they’re actually not all that much different than the home scores so far this year.

32. UTAH STATE
Road Score 1 195.725
Road Score 2 195.300
Road Score 3 194.075

Watch out for Utah State once that 191.6 goes away. Four 195s is more than several of the teams currently ranked ahead.

33. BYU

Home/Road Score 3 194.850
RQS 194.440
Current RQS rank  24

Last year, the RQS cutoff to make regionals was 195.385, which NC State missed by 0.010, so that’s the average to watch in this group over the next few weeks. These teams need 195s to start feeling safe.

The game is over, Stanford. It’s not funny anymore. You’re legitimately ranked 36th with three road meets remaining and three road scores still to get. One more bad road meet this weekend means Stanford would be counting a LOW 194.

37. BALL STATE

Division III teams are given RQSs here because that’s the standard by which all the teams are ranked, but for their regionals, all eligible teams will participate in either the NCGA East or West regionals with the top three in each advancing as a full team to NCGA nationals.

  1. Ugh Stanford. It makes me sad because I just want to see them kill it for the rest of the year and at least make nationals.

    1. Stanford could use a trip to Gainesville for a nice road score and perhaps a few 10s for Price. Too bad they aren’t going there. 🙂

      1. @Anon —

Ummm, they were at the UCLA 10-fest last weekend. It didn’t exactly turn out great for them.

  2. I scrolled through the bottom third and misread “UW-Whitewater” as “UW-Whatever” just fyi

  3. As a numbers geek, I’m in heaven. Thank you!!

Minnesota’s Road and Home/Road Scores are a little mixed up on here (one of the 194.9s was at home this week, which pushes the 193.375 to a Road Score). It doesn’t change their overall score but does emphasize how much they need some hit road meets coming up. They really can’t pull this “we finally hit bars so let’s blow beam instead” crap again.

    1. Seconding the amazingness of this. Thank you!!

Downloaded it and caught a few possible errors while I was going through crosschecking with RTN to mark scores as home or road. Flipped digits in one of the Auburn road scores (changing a 195.725 to a 195.275), as well as a phantom score for Kent State (RTN has only 5 meets listed, missing the 194.175 score).

  4. I’m probably the only one who thinks this, but I hope Stanford misses out on regionals. I highly doubt it will happen, but I would much rather see a team with coaches and an administration who truly WANTS it and cares to make it. Stanford has underwhelmed so many years and they have a roster full of talent. I feel bad for the senior class and Ebee because I really like them as individual athletes, but I just can’t seem to ever cheer for this team. The school doesn’t seem to care at all about gymnastics — their social media and outreach is one of the worst amongst the power 5 teams, they provide disappointing access to meet video/scores (thankfully, the PAC 12 has helped with video), and it appears they are completely fine with a program that underperforms (and with rumors of questionable coaching practices).

Imagine if Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Utah, UCLA, OU, etc. were sitting in 36th place right now — a year after being a 3rd seed at regionals. The comments about firing the coach would be nonstop.

Also, the “academic” argument doesn’t matter here — Michigan, UCLA, and Cal have high academic standards and they seem to be doing just fine.

    1. You are NOT the only one who thinks this. I agree and I am less confident than BBS is about Stanford’s getting to regionals.

It really bothers me that people call Stanford’s peaking late a “strategy” when it really seems to be a lack of coaching effort. Everyone thought Stanford’s strategy paid off last year at regionals, but Kristen Smyth just got lucky because Michigan screwed up beam. Had Michigan even one less wobble on beam, Stanford would have missed nationals and then it wouldn’t have looked so strategic. I also think Stanford might benefit from a coaching change – then maybe the girls would want to be there for academics AND gymnastics rather than putting up with the gymnastics to get a top-notch degree.
