Opening proceedings today was the first session of the annual GymQuarters Yellow Font Mardi Gras Something Or Other. It’s obviously not a spelling test because I found this little winner on the event site.

Nebraska managed a season-high out of this one with 197.125, which drops a 194.475 and makes the RQS picture look much more presentable. They still have a 194.800 hanging around (and a 195.700) but three meets left to get rid of them.

Final: Nebraska 197.125, Lindenwood 194.000, Brown 193.350, Seattle Pacific 191.000

Of note, Ashley Lambert did a tucked jaeger in the first rotation, which was an accident and also cool. She was crazy close on her piked jaeger and had to tuck it to avoid hitting the bar, but it was a delightfully throwback correction. Also be warned that the floor scoring was off-the-charts deranged and hilarious. Watch for that in the evening session. At that standard, both Oklahoma and LSU would get 50s.

Primary focus of the live blogging will be the GymQuarters Invitational because I know a lot of the more sensible among you haven’t sworn the blood oath and promised your first born to the river witch to subscribe to Flo.

But first, we get started with Florida and Arkansas with John and Sac. The “applique vest” quotient here is a little higher than I would have expected, though actually no.

Rotation 1:

Rathjen – VT – too large of a bounce back out of that full, a bounce and then a step, a little piking.

Boren – UB – solid tkatchev – small arch on hs after clear hip – some leg break on the bail as well – cast handstands look solid – hop back on DLO, good shape.

MacMoyle – VT – better control on the landing, small hop back and piking at the end – solid dynamics.

Chant – UB – She lives! “From watered-down, Ontario, Canada.” flatter tkatchev than Boren – keeps her legs on bail with a litlte hip angle – I’d say she missed all of her cast handstands – tuck full with a step forward – not as smooth as it was before she was out.

Yamzon – VT – bounces back out of her full, also a bounce and a step like Rathjen – good distance but doesn’t have the height of some others.

Gowey – UB – Nice Ray to a very pretty pak – loses her shape on 1/2 turn on low – super close on her DLO dismount, piked it down a ton but didn’t hit the bar, which it looked like she would for a second – hop.

Anderson – VT – great distance – controls the landing with a step but chest very far down, which will take away the score.

Baker – UB – giant and excellent Ray – hits her vertical on the bail – good counter rotation in her release skills – sticks double front, she has gotten much better on that landing this season.

I sort of love that Alicia calls a Ray a Hindorff like an old-timer. For explanation why: Ray.

Speed – VT – pretty full, best height and open in the lineup so far – hop back – pretty in the air.

Hundley – UB – strong Shap to pak – she loses her legs on the pak a touch but you can’t really see that from the side – good Shap 1/2 – pretends she sticks the tuck full, with a quick college salute.

McGlone – VT – nice full, smallish hop back – not much to take in terms of shape. Solid.

McMurtry – UB – good first hs – a little closer on Ray this week than last week – solid shape on bail and height on shoot to high – smallest slide back on the tuck full this time. She goes 9.975 this time. So…hi…that wasn’t even really a stick. I would have gone 9.900 for that, but I live in a fantasy world.

After 1: Florida 49.350, Arkansas 48.950

Florida picked it up at the end of that rotation after some early issues like Gowey’s dismount. Good later routines, from Baker in particular. Lots of “career high” comments from John in that rotation, which kind of tells you about the scores. Arkansas hit vault perfectly fine but needs more landing control to get a 49 from that lineup especially away.

Intros underway at GymQuarters. There seems to be a lot of throwing beads into the crowd. Get Ragan Smith to a safe space.

Did John just say bars has been really consistent for Arkansas this year?

Rotation 2:

Alexander – VT – her pop is excellent on that full – pikes down at the end and a step to the side – a little off line.

Anderson – UB – a little late on 1/2 turn – catches jaeger – short on some handstands and a some moments of loose back will be the major deductions, step on double tuck.

Chant – VT – Tsuk full – hop back – rather piked at the end – nice to have her 10.0 back in the lineup.

Garner – UB – giant 1/1 good finish position – lovely position on her gienger, legs together the whole time – hitting handstands – high tuck full dismount with a step – pretty. Also a little too piked on the overshoot out of the gienger.

Hundley – VT – leans to hold the stick on the full – a little dog-fire-hydrant landing position –

Yamzon – UB – clear hip to tkatchev – bail – DLO 1/1 with a step back – strong dismount, some handstand problems in there, one short and one a little arched – doesn’t have the huge amplitude in the tkatchev either.

Boren – VT – excellent 1.5 – one of her very best – great pop and only a hop of heels together on the landing – keeps her leg shape, you could say that’s a hop, but I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt of just bringing her heels together there. 9.925 is like, actually realistic and appropriate? Where did that come from?

Speed – UB – great height on jaeger – legs together throughout the bail – precise handstands – chest down on tuck full with a step and a step-salute.

Slocum – handspring pike 1/2 – maybe they were saving the score for this one? – very similar to last week – but didn’t salute herself out of it to the same degree – some chest, some legs early on the block. Alicia is not having that. 9.925. I’m down with that score, also.

MacMoyle – UB – will get hit for being extremely short on her bail handstands, but she got her tkatchev and her DLO dismount with a hop back.

McMurtry – VT – does the full, gorgeous obviously, too big and hops back which should probably be a tenth. Maybe a half, nothing else you can take.

Burton – UB – a bit floppy on a bail and very late on her giant 1/1 into the double tuck, but otherwise some quality in there.

Florida goes 49.400 on vault, and I thought that was scored just right, which makes it seem low compared to some of the scores we usually see.

After 2: FLorida 98.750, Arkansas 97.900

Good start for Florida. We’re about to go at GymQuarters.

Emma McLean got 9.975 on vault. Let’s hope she was doing the 1.5, he says only half kidding.

Rotation 1:

Vega – BB – hits her loso series and aerial comfortably – small lean correction on side somi – switch to split 1/4, a little form from this angle, but little – small check on full turn – side aerial to full  – stuck with lean –

Jones – FX – 2.5 to front tuck, solid and controlled – normal, good hit, controlled landings –

Cannamela almost sticks her full on vault – small hop –

Priessman a little short on 1.5 with a lunge back to save it. But 1.5!

Ewing – VT – 1.5 – step forward, but small and otherwise one of her good ones.

Brown – FX – frotn 2/1 – lovely high loso out of second pass – clean rudi – lovely hit

Sanders – BB – secure loso series – back tuck to straddle – standing front tuck and hits it as usual, secure but very swautty – punch front lay 1/1 dismount – hop forward –

Hambrick – VT – just a full and a giant bounce/ lunge back out of it – a thousand tenth deduction, they’ll want to drop that.

Edney – VT – kind of larger lunge forward out of her 1.5 this time – more than shoulder width.

Gnat – VT – basically sticks the double full this time but does lean forward pretty distinctly to hold the stick.

Dickson – BB – small lean correction on loso series – aerial to beat jump, smooth – bhs 1.5 dismount, stuck – she’s shocked that she stuck – solid set. Very good.

Dowell – FX – double front is exceptional – 1.5 to layout, just the slightest bit short this time with an arch – front lay to front 1/1, controlled – just a touch short on that as well but neither really showed up in the landings.

How Hambrick got a 9.800 for that vault I have no idea. She barely stayed on the mat she bounced back so far. She scored higher than Cannamela? What?

49.375 for LSU on vault. Good score, though not their best vaults.

Jackson – FX – open full in, controlled step back – 1/2 to front full, high – excellent leap amplitude and completion position- double pike. Yes.

Reynolds – BB – small correction on kickover front – legs on loso series but secure – just a little forward on swithc side but fine – huge break on side somi, chest way down to save – 2/1 dismount, short with a lunge forward –

Just in case you’re curious, these scores at GymQuarters are cray. Don’t worry.

Babalis – BB – aerial to loso, hit but slow connection – switch to split, nice – full turn – kickover front is right on – punch front 1/1, near-stick, small hop.

Nichols – FX – piked full in, keeps her front foot down this time – 1.5 through to 2/1, finishes high and early, loses her legs in the twist a touch – switch ring and split full are awesome – small slide back on double pike.

Broussard – BB – hits loso series with feet – switch and straddle 1/4, back leg down a bit, emphasized by camera angle – side aerial is good, sticks gainer full. Phew.

Capps – FX – nails DLO this time, chest up pretty well too – front 1/1 to layout, just over-rotated on her front full so doesn’t get quite the punch into the lay – pretty leaps – rudi, solid – a little shortish? – Excellent.

9.975 for both Nichols and Jackson. Both high, Nichols definitely didn’t control the landing on her final pass. This is why I said, if we’re going by those Nebraska floor routines that went 9.925 and 9.950, all of these routines are 13s.

After 1: Oklahoma 49.675, Georgia 49.425, LSU 49.375, Missouri 49.100
I haven’t talked about Missouri because of internet stream priorities.

Hundley – FX – whip to double tuck is very solid – front lay to front 1/1 could be higher, especially for a gymnast of Hundley’s ability, she doesn’t need to flop it around like that – bounces pretty far back out of double pike, did well not to go OOB but it will be a notable deduction.

Braie Speed did beam! She’s all upset that she fell or whatever, but I’m just like…BRAIE SPEED DID BEAM –

Burton – BB – pretty loso series – check on full turn – switch to straddle 1/4, very short of position on straddle 1/4 – 1.5 dismount, secure.

McMurtry – FX – she’s doing floor today – doesn’t do the triple full, just a double, but it’s the highest double full you’ve ever seen.

Rotation 2:

Jones – VT – good full but does hop back – the others will have more distance, but it’s solid.

Reynolds – FX – front 2/1 – gets it around a little crossover – 1/5 to a whipped over front layout but fine –

Marks – VT – pretty – bit better height and distance than Jones but also a larger bounce back –

Hambirck – UB – strong bail – very straigth – a little forward on tuck full landing with a lunge

Capps – VT – short on her full again this week, lunge forward.

Dowell – VT – sticks 1.5 again! A little mushy knees at the end but that’s all –

Harrold – UB – toe shape 1/2 to zucchold, some legs on the shape 1/2 – borderline hs – 1/2 into solid jaeger – GAH, can’t cast out of it and has to recast- trouble – and of course sticks her double front out of that.

Roberts – FX – finishes chest down but secure double tuck.

Jackson – VT – super super high 1.5, does come in a little short this time with a hop back which is the opposite of her usual problem –

Nichols – VT – gorgeous stick on her 1.5, maybe just a little lean to hold it, but as we’ll say a lot, it was better than that time she got a 10. She didn’t move the foot, just leaned –

Edney – UB – actual Hindorff is solid – legs together on bail – straight DLO and stuck – very good one

Babalis – FX – good control on double tuck – front lay to front full has appropriate height and position, just a little bounce -hits double pike as well, some of her most controlled landings.

Finnegan – UB – some arch on handstand before gorgeous Ray – hits bail with legs together – small hop on DLO – a couple .05 errors in there but not much.

Vega – FX – whip to double tuck this time instead of the full in, probably smart because that full in wasn’t really cutting it even when she was landing it – finishes – chest down double pike with a lunge.

Priessman – UB – flattish tkatchev but good body position – pretty pak – whippy but high DLO with a lean to hold the stick – works bars like a crazy person on a caffeine high but it works for her.

Dickson – FX – high double pike, bounce back – 1.5 to layout, dances out of it and just keeps the dance in bounds – switch side and popa, hits her shapes – chest up on double tuck with a controlled step back.

Oklahoma has four 9.975s so far in this meet. LOL.

Marino – FX – bounces out of the DLO but chest was pretty well up – split and straddle are right to 180 again, loses her feet a little but the horizontal is nice – 1.5 to a very straight layout, that’s the opposite of what I’m talking about when I say a layout is whippy, Marino is what it should look like – looked like a slide on double pike.

Everyone on Georgia’s team is getting 9.9s on floor. I really should have just done my own scores for this meet and then we compare at the end. It would have been…fascinating.

Still missing the final two scores for LSU’s bars, but they both hit.

Cheney still in the beam lineup for Florida – check on full turn – bhs bhs loso series, large check with a bend at the waist – switch to vag-slammer – side aerial to full, a little piked,

Apparently Baker fell? Dear.

Nice high double pike from Yamzon.

After 2: Oklahoma 99.125, Georgia 98.875, LSU 98.675, Missouri 98.200

Georgia is ahead of LSU. Welcome to the upside down.

Hundley a good aerial – bhs loso series is solid – switch side very secure – full turn – side aerial to full with a step.

WAIT BALANCE BEAM IS LIKE POMMEL HORSE??? THANK YOU FOR THE BRAND NEW COMMENT!

Rotation 3:

Macadaeg – BB – pretty full turn – Kathy moan – switch to switch 1/2, excellent position – aerial to beat, nice – check on loso –

Capps – UB – some legs in full turn this time – good cast handstands – a little angle on the bail – sticks tuck full – they’ll take for the giant 1/1 and maybe amplitude on the tkatchev, but it will still be a big score, obviously.

Reynolds – VT – short this time with a lunge forward.

Roberts – VT – a little piked throughout her full, hop back.

Hambrick – BB – L turn, pulls out of it a little early but fine – huge mistake on side aerial, so so short and falls –  the rest is gorgeous obviously, but trouble now – not one of her good days.

Catour – UB – I’m wondering if it’s our angle here because everyone looks short of vertical on their bails – or everyone is short of vertical on bails –

Marino – VT – larger hop back on full –

Johnson – VT – great height but also large bounce

Dowell – UB – excellent Ray, great height and form – that bail looked better, more vertical – flings out DLO just a touch with a step back to control the landing –

Dickson – VT – deep landing on the full with another larger bounce back – not Georgia’s better vaults today.

Ewing – BB – small lean correction on layout to two feet but good – hits switch side – standing layout stepout is very secure – one hit down –

Snead – VT – she’s back on vault – good form on full, hop back. No 1.5.

Lehrmann leans to hold her stick on the tucked full dismount on bars.

Boren has a large wobble on beam as well for Florida, break at the waist to hold her series. And they’re already counting a 9.650.

Edney – BB – – aerial to a tight sissone, short of position – good loso series – sticks 1.5. Two more to get through.

Wofford – UB – giant full to 1/2 to a high jaeger – also a little angled on that bail – tight on final handstand – good stick on tuck full though. A few things in the middle –

Nichols – UB – another excellent Ray – precise hs – pretty pak to toe on – legs firmly together on the shap 1/2 – sticks DLO – fantastic. One handstand was out of shot so I couldn’t really tell, but I saw nothing else in that one –

Finengan – wonderful switch 1/2 as always, just pretty pretty – hits her side somi – side aerial to a stuck full – good one.

9.975 for Nichols. Kind of surprised it wasn’t a 10, just because…all of the scores have been seventh-tenths too high tonight anyway.

Gnat – BB – aerial, small lean – full turn – switch to straddle, solid – switch side – secure loso series – sticks 2/1 with DTY legs. They endured the fall.

Harris – FX – Missouri – bounces back on double pike, rather far – nice high straddles – front lay to front full – short double tuck with lunge forward.

Also, Alicia Boren got a 9.850, which you cannot explain to me because I saw her bend at the waist. I SAW IT WITH MINE OWN EYES.

Anyway, Florida 197.125, Arkansas 195.200
Neither team will leave particularly satisfied with that score. We’ve got Alabama and Auburn following that one as we also finish up action from GymQuarters.

After 3: Oklahoma 148.750, LSU 148.250, Georgia 147.875, Missouri 147.150
Georgia’s poor vault landings gave up the advantage after LSU got through beam with a fall and ALL THE 9.9s!!!!

In case you’re counting, Maggie Nichols has 9.975 for every routine so far.

In Alabama – NcNeer hops back on full on vault. Childers follows with a stick, just chest down a little.

Michigan went 197.225. They don’t mind.

Cerio has a lovely blind change to piked jaeger, very precise – nearly sticks double tuck, college salutes herself out of it.

Rotation 4:
Ewing – FX – small stagger on front 2/1 landing – slide back on double pike final pass.

Jones – BB – chest down on loso series but secure – kickover front to beat, a little deep but did the beat out of it well – switch to split is fine – sticks 1.5

Reynolds – UB – one short and one arched hs in there – medium step back on double layout –

Johnson – UB – clear hip to gienger with legs – hip angle on all her skills, which can be viewed as missing vertical each time – a little deep on dlo landing with a step –

Two steps back for Guerrero on 1.5 VT for Alabama.

Zamardi – FX -lunges forward out of double arabian this time but appears to stay in – a little crooked on her straddles – 1.5 to layout, fine –

Lehrmann – BB -solid aerial, a little tighter on switch side than usual – excellent legs and security on loso series – straddle 1/4 – step on 1.5 –

Vaculik – UB – It’s a hit but she did have a couple short cast handstands in there -usual legs on dismount, bounce backward –

Edney – FX – large-ish stumble/lunge forward out of double arabian this time – some stumble on landing her second pass as well – some solid double tuck, but not her best landings –

Catour – BB – finishes with a stuck gainer pike. I saw maybe a lean on the side side.

Snead – UB – godo toe point on Tkatchev – hitting hs – solid bail vertical – maybe short last handstnd – sticks DLO, will be a big score.

Hambirck – FX – pikes her DLO a little more than usual this time with a step – 2.5, way over and punches to a fall. DAMN. Talk about it not being your day.

Brown – BB – good aerial to bhs los series – clean and secure – pretty sissone – maybe rushed that switch a little, got ahead of herself with an odd chest position on it but nothing real – gainer full.

Dickson – UB – quite precise in all her positions – another stuck DLO – Snead and Dickson nailed the end of that rotation –

Kelley – FX – slide back on DLO – open full in, excellent height and power, not bad ont eh control but not ideal through two passes – loses her feet on splits and does a tuck jump, the universal sign for I DON’T SPLITS –

Nichols – BB – aerial walkover to beat, nice – bhs loso series, secure – full turn is smooth – switch to split, wonderful 180s – front tuck, holds it – double tuck and it looked like a stick from here. Running in and out of frame is the new celebration. 10.000. So that one was the 10? OK?

Gnat – FX – DLO, her usual, strong – 2.5 to front tuck, lunges out of it a bit too far this time – switch ring to split full – sticks double pike – one of her good ones other than the middle pass.

Capps – BB – completely solid on loso series – fluid full turn, works out of it elegantly – walkover to scale this time, controlled well – switch to straddle 1/4 – sticks gainer full. Good one. Same sort of moments of a couple not-even-deduction corrections, but they combine to probably make this not a 10. Quite strong. But we can’t all be Maggie Nichols. 9.925.

Oklahoma goes 198.350. Yeah. I know.

Georgia goes 196.950, a very usable road score. Missouri finishes 196.350, a season high. We’re still waiting on a final from LSU. No score from Kelley yet?

A casual 39.925 from Nichols. That’ll be a research project to find out the last time someone got 39.925.

It’s a 197.700 for LSU. You know. Gnat got a 9.975 on floor in spite of, you know, just bouncing out of one of her passes.

Short break, then the second half of Auburn/Alabama.

Alabama leads 98.500 to 98.225 at the mid point. My, how not-a-198.3 of you.

“I AM BEAUTIFUL RIGHT THERE BABY.” -Dana Duckworth.

Rotation 3:

NcMeer – BB – aerial to bhs, slow in connection but that’s never been a thing before – secure loso series – high switch split to split jump, shows her 180s – sticks 1.5 – one of her good ones, quite nice.

Becker – FX – solid double tuck, good shape, chest a little down but not bad – pulls around that double pike but lower than the double tuck – split full is short of 180, good popa – 1.5 to what was supposed to be a layout, has to tuck it but keeps it to her feet.

Childers – BB – solid loso series – split to sheep, sheep is a little too NCAA and a larger check on it, leg up – kickover front to scale is excellent – step forward on 1.5.

Oops:
screen-shot-2017-02-17-at-6-16-23-pm

Cerio – FX – short on her double pike landing with a lunge – very nice straddle positions – I like her layout to wolf, a little Atkinson ode – and she can pull that combo off – bounces out of rudi –

Sanders – BB – aerial to bhs, very confident and comfortable – switch to a tight straddle jump with a check – bend correction on loso series as well – step on 1.5.

So…is visible underwear during gymnastics like…a style trend I don’t know about?

Scaglione is a very pretty floor worker, just needs to control these steps out of her passes a bit more, but she has the leg form in twisting that a lot don’t have.

AH AH HA we’re talking about how much personality problems people have again.

Desch – BB – aerial to bhs – full turn – almost wobbles on choreorgraphy – side somi is right over the beam, very good – switch to split – two bhs to 1.5 dismount, hop forward.

Hlawek – FX – “This is another very interesting young lady.” When I say that, it is meant sarcastically. awesome rudi to full, pretty and better than the double arabian – bounce on double tuck – whips around 1.5 to layout a little whippy.

“Aspires to work for NASA some day so landings might be in her future.” AH HA HA HA STAB.

Winston – BB – split to straddle 1/4 is perfect – aerial to bhs – WAY too many aerial to bhs series in this lineup – pretty full turn – small hop on double tuck, very good.

Slappey – FX – high double pike, but lands squatty with a step – front lay to front rudi – huge travel span on that pass, pretty at the start but way hunched over on rudi and then steps OOB – short double tuck with lunge.

Guerrero – BB – She has some acrostic about her name. My eye roll muscle is broken – three series to loso is secure as always – switch to straddle – I’m glad we’re seeing this routine from this angle rather than the behind angle because her leo fit is so inappropriate – sticks 1.5, very strong. You’re not allowed to start crying before they even give you a score. 9.975. Cheers to the judge who didn’t acquiesce to the team or crowd. Good use of trolling sass.

MJ Rott is pretending the cheers are for her. LOVE YOU.

Rott with a large lunge out of her DLO. Short double pike with a lunge, not her better landings.

Alabama 147.800, Auburn 147.275

Kupets and Holly went to a “dance class” with Aja Sims. Sadly, Kupets didn’t do “pie in the face, pie in the face”

Hlawek hits her loso series – switch to split – deep kickover front but controlled – sticsk 1.5.

Jetter – FX – deep landing on double arabian, squatty with a lunge forward – tentative on split, good straddle – back 1.5 to front 1/1 to dance out – 1.5 to layout –

Boise State on 197 pace again. Southern Utah just had a mess on bars.

Cerio – BB – good loso series – check on switch 1/2 – punch front 1/1 and stuck.

Is “last routine in Coleman” even a thing for Auburn gymnasts?

Guerra – FX – “Here is Katie Bailey” – bounce on double tuck – 1.5 to front layout is excellent, great twisting shape and stays straight and higher through the layout – deepish on double pike with a slide back.

Becker – BB – lean correction on a kickover front – pretends she was doing a loso to scale to cover up a wobble – step on 1.5.

Bailey – FX – strong double arabian, that’s how you do it, controlled step out – front lay front full – a little short on rudi, not a major landing error, though.

Engler – BB – solid loso series – check on full turn – switch to straddle 1/4, another minor check – side aerial, holds it, tentative but getting through with a hit – hop back on gainer pike.

Desch – FX – deep double arabian landing but not much of a step, just down like she’s about it sit it – 1.5 to 1/2 to split to front tuck – switch ring to split full – double tuck, the issue in her routine is body position on landing, but she controlled them.

Slappey – BB – step back on loso series – high amplitude on switch and switch 1/2, that’s how high leaps should be – side aerial to tucked full with a step – actually it’s not tucked enough to be a tuck and not straight enough to be a layout.

Winston – FX – solid DLO, chest pretty good – front lay to front full – high switch ring and switch 1/2, excellent – slide back on double tuck.

Krippner – BB – aerial to beat – switch to split, good shapes – steps back out of her loso but pretends she meant to – sticks 1.5. Good beam rotation. It won’t be a super total for Auburn, but they’ll be able to drop something low and will have a mid 196.

Childers – FX – deep landing on full in with hop forward – I loved her floor in JO – front tuck through to double full, loses her legs in the twisting form – goes for three consecutive jumps, which gets a little indistinct in finishing position as it often does – flattish rudi but fine.

Alabama 197.350, Auburn 196.450
So, that is a season high for Auburn. There’s that. It’s still not great. Alabama had a solid showing. I wasn’t sold by all of the floor landings, but no problems. Just a casual point below Oklahoma’s score.

  1. Thank you for covering the quad meet today! I’m disappointed I can’t watch it.

You would think Flo would understand that as an NCAA event, a lot of the people watching would be college students. And I suspect very few will pay a ridiculous fee to watch their team compete just once.

    1. Businesses aren’t run that way. It’s no different from paying extra on your cable subscription for the SEC network. Providing meet coverage costs money and Flo provides tons of gymnastics coverage throughout the year.

      1. I totally understand it’s a business. I just wish FLO would provide a lower cost alternative to watch just 1 meet versus signing up for a pass. The fact that FLO is more expensive than adding a sports package onto my cable subscription is a bit nuts. They could actually do more business and make more money by making the product more accessible.

I tried it last year and I made it through about 30 minutes of the meet because the feed kept cutting out. I cancelled and emailed them about my issues and they said they received a ton of feedback and requests for cancellation after that meet. I’m hoping they’ve since improved their coverage, but the product was subpar, particularly when you are competing against the PAC 12, SEC/ESPN, and Big Ten.

      2. anon – nope, Flo hasn’t improved. Not in delivery of decent coverage or customer service.

    2. Not only that but the quality of the livestream is pretty bad. I’m stupid enough to buy the monthly option cause I wanted to also watch the documentaries. The quality of the stream is so bad it’s crazy this thing cost.

      1. That was my main issue last year. I could barely watch a routine and when I did it was like it was filmed by a junior high student.

I’ll never subscribe to Flo again. I can watch so many more meets with quality video and good commentators on television through cable subscriptions.

  2. Flo has uploaded numerous teaser podium training vids.
Of note, Priesmann’s stuck Y 1 1/2 looks amazing. So nice to see her healthy and rocking four events.

  3. ASac basically admitting she’s on crack saying she would give the stick to Hundly for that bars landing.

    1. I believe that Paris Phillips broke her nose in her bars disaster. Finished the routine with a respectable dismount, though. Props to her.

  4. YES! Maegan Chant is back! Finally my fantasy bar lineup isn’t so bleak along with vault!

  5. Arkansas puts up 5 gymnasts because they’re gutsy and have faith in their gymnasts? Yeah, I don’t think that’s it, Alicia.

  6. Second week in a row John tells us Kim Zmeskal is the first woman ever to win a world championship. I’m dying, lol.

  7. I like Hailey Garner, but in addition to the fall, I don’t think she completed her full turn ( about 3/4).

  8. Anyone know why Schick didn’t compete beam for UGA? They had a great rotation, but I really like her as an anchor and I think she’s getting so much more confident this year.

    1. She’s not in the bars lineup either, UGA lineup changes/miscues & Hambrick are killing my fantasy team tonight

      1. My guess on Hambrick is that after having such a successful season last year, expectations are messing with her mental game.
She seems to be following the pattern of many gymnasts who have killer junior years and then fall a bit flat their senior year, for no apparent physical reason.

What are y’all’s thoughts on this?

      2. She’s a Junior, not a Senior. I think LSU just went full out too fast this season, and it’s showing up in particular with Hambrick because she’s done AA consistently. But there have been other issues here and there. Sometimes it works to be close to post season form at the beginning of the season, but sometimes it makes you lose gas near postseason and/or accumulate injuries. LSU has a great team. Pacing is a delicate balance and they may have just slightly gunned the beginning of the season for this particular team. Or maybe I’m totally wrong and it’s just a slump that will pass soon. (Slump being a relative term, obviously.)

      3. I also think part of the issue for LSU is that they know they are one of the top teams and have the ability to win a national title. Additionally, they are no longer the underdog to Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. It’s a lot different to be at the top and fulfill expectations than it is to be a scrappy underdog trying to gain respect. I think LSU will break through and win a title soon, but much like Oklahoma and Florida before them, it could take a few 2nd/3rds at nationals before they finally put it all together.

Although, I would LOVE for Gnat to lead this team to a title this year.

      4. I agree, I feel like after coming so close last year LSU are putting so much pressure and expectations (and difficulty!) on themselves that they’re having a bit of trouble at the moment. They looked phenomenal at the beginning of the season and it must be frustrating to be doing so well and consistently being number two, so they keep trying to up themselves (e.g. By adding in all those 1.5s on vault and having Kelley doing a DLO and a full in on floor when it’s SO much better when she does the easier second pass) and are having a few struggles. Altho tbh all of the teams have been having some issues at certain pts (like always) except for OU, basically. They look strong even when they don’t. I hope they can pick it up bc we all know they’re capable.

  9. I thought I just had to see OU VS LSU head on.
All I have to say: I have officially joined the flo hate club.

      1. I tried. They suck.
But it’s worth all of us trying and letting them know our disappointment.

    1. Georgia actually looks stronger than LSU through two events..believe it or not! LSU has has mini mistakes that are definitely adding up.

  10. Michigan scores tonight are very … realistic. Like actually right. What a let-down from watching UCLA last week.

    1. My son was wanting Lauren Marinez to get a 10 on beam, despite a series hesitation and a dismount landed with feet apart, because THEY DON’T HAVE TO TAKE THOSE DEDUCTIONS. Yeah, sure, but they always seem to in Crisler.

  11. “WELCOME TO THE UPSIDE DOWN.”

OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS BLOG EVEN MORE THAN I ALREADY DID HONESTLY JUST LIKE.

  12. Random fact: If Maggie gets a ten on beam she’ll have all 9.975s and a 10 giving her a 39.925. DONE.

    1. What’s everyone’s best guess as to WHEN (not if) Swaggy Mags gets her PERFECT 40? You know it’s going to happen…

      1. I feel like if Maggie was anchoring all of the lineups she could legitimately go 40.00. I get what KJ is trying to do by having Capps anchor beam and floor, hopefully a potential for back to back 10’s but I don’t think that approach is maximizing their scoring potential. But what do I know really? Haha

  13. Even with a fall (dropped) on beam, LSU climbs ahead of Georgia and is on track for a mid-high 197.
I realize I was hoping for the big upset over OU.

  14. I know everyone will be talking about OU and LSU, but I have to give it to Georgia. I’m sure they would have liked better UB and VT rotations, but they had a solid meet. And Dickson is really shaping up to be a star!

    1. Kupets also went 39.9 I think at NCAAs one year. I believe it was team finals, so they don’t technically count it as an individual AA score.

Not sure about higher than a 39.9 though.

      1. In 2009 Super Six I think Kupets received two 10s. Though it was Super Six so it was a TEAM event and individual performance didn’t count because NCAA gymnastics is only about the TEAM.

      1. And Karin Lichey got the 40 back in 1996 for Georgia.

With the way scores are going this year, I could see Nichols getting a 40 this season. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see scores take a step back next season due to the current crazy high scores. It seems like scores build and then the judges get realistic and go back down, only to build up again. It’s a never ending cycle in NCAAs.

      2. Lichey got a 40 in the late 90s I believe.
        And I recall a 3 10 Dantzscher meet (39.9 I think?)
I’d certainly be interested in a list of everyone that went 39.9+.

  15. Anyone know if MacKenzie Brannan is expected to be back? Also, why no Katie Bailey on beam this year? She’s lovely there.

    1. In an earlier meet this year, they mentioned Bailey had some kind of lingering injury issue that is limiting her. They may be saving her for the end of the season.

      1. They said on the broadcast that Bailey had hip surgery in the fall and was even contemplating whether it was worth it for her to come back for her senior season.

  16. Spencer, I looked at your posting on the Ray. I could have sworn that the hop-full on bars was also a Ray? I know she did it… does it have another official name?

    1. You got me wondering. According to this site, it’s credited to Chusovitina: http://wagymnastics.wikia.com/wiki/Uneven_Bars_Skills

Peronally, I have no idea if that’s right – and if someone referred to it as a Chusovitina, I’d have no idea what they were talking about.

Other moves named for Ray according to that site, which actually shows the moves!: “Stalder release with counter movement to high bar (Ray)” (low to high transition); also, double twisting double layout dismount.

  17. “Sadly, Kupets didn’t do “pie in the face, pie in the face”
Gymnastics wouldn’t be half as entertaining without your commentary, Spencer.

  18. OU has this interesting strategy of using their A team every meet. With very few exceptions they don’t seem to rest their best athletes, or give competition experience to back-up options. It’s working for them so far, and while I don’t find myself concerned, I wonder if I should be.

    1. Maybe a little? It’s not always clear to me who would immediately jump in if one of the major contributors was injured. I do think, though, it provides stability amd that’s helpful. It’s fun to watch teams with such different strategies. I do feel like Oklahoma generally does a better job keeping their gymnasts healthy, though, so I worry about injuries somewhat less with them. Wonder what their secret is. I’m bummed Lovan isn’t really getting s chance to compete though – she had such a great start with Oklahoma as a freshman.

    2. As of now, I think OU is the clear runaway NCAA champion and the battle will be for second place (the Sooners might even be able to sustain counting a fall, like Florida in 2013).

LSU should be the second seed, but they are vulnerable to a big (beam) mistake or lots of little ones (hops/steps on landings) that take them down to Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Utah, Boise State low-197s level. All of those other teams have question marks but when they’re “on” a low-to-mid 197 appear realistic. (Michigan/Utah can’t afford an injury to a major player due to smaller rosters, Florida needs to learn to win with a Sloan-less roster, Alabama has to overcome the year ending in “7” problem, Boise State needs to prove they can sustain the pressure of being an expected top team.)

  19. Last week at UCLA’s meet everyone got OUT OF THEIR MINDS because of the high scoring. Today nobody really seems to be bothered about absurd and crazy inflated scores.

    1. The only inflated meet appears to be the one OU/LSU/Georgia was at. Where the scores too high? Yes. Was the finish order out of whack? No.

LSU and Georgia both gave up multiple tenths on vault/bars.
Beam/floor judges started drinking in the afternoon when watching Nebraska and it looks like they never stopped.

OU – the scores were too high but they were the best team at the meet. Their final total should’ve been closer to LSU’s final score. But obviously OU needed to have the top score of the season again after the UCLA 10-fest last weekend.

      Prediction for Saturday:
      Utah 197-950
      UCLA 197.925
      🙂
Skinner: 10s on vault and floor
Peng: 10s on bars and beam
Ross: 10s on bars and beam

  20. Everytime you guys talk about leos fitting inappropriately, I think of Guerrero. Glad I’m not the only one. She’s got a great body, but they need to get a leo fitted for her that doesn’t show 90% of her buttcheeks.
