Love Mags but that VT getting the same score as Brenna’s was some serious crack this week.
Couple of questions:
1. What is up with Cal’s Jessica Howe? Will she compete this season or is she red-shirting?
2. Why did three UCLA gymnasts take a private charter jet to Utah and the rest of the team flew in later on a commercial airline? Who are the UCLA special three?
It wasn’t just three. I believe 16 total flew on the private jet — coaches and competing gymnasts. The rest of the team/staff had to fly out early Saturday morning due to the rain.
The teams original flight on Friday was cancelled due to weather. I live in LA and the storm shut down everything — insane rain and wind all day Friday. UCLA scrambled and secured a private plane that could leave late (after the worst of the storm passed) and the rest were originally supposed to fly out of Palm Springs. They missed the Palm Springs flight (driving conditions were horrendous and Palm Springs is a trek) and so they caught a flight out of Ontario.
UCLA should have planned it better and rescheduled to fly out either Thursday night or early Friday morning, so I do blame the university for poor planning. But there was no special treatment for just three gymnasts.
Thanks for the reply. When I originally posted I had just heard bits and pieces from various commenters online. Managed to see the meet (love you Nastiafan) and learned more details about numbers today (Sunday).
Though I did wonder perhaps the three seniors (Angi, Hallie and Peng) were able to “special” flying conditions. Is there another senior who regularly competes that I’m forgetting?
The UCLA gymnasts took different flights because of the torrential rains in Southern California
Most of the competing ones (check their Instagram, there is a pic with at least ten of them ) and then the coaches !
Shouldn’t both Mykayla Skinner and Madison Kocian be on the AA leaderboard? I think Skinner went 39.675 and Kocian went 39.55 last night.
And Edney also had a 39.55 with Dickson and Kocian!
Not sure if anyone went back and watched but Kyla really did dance her way out of the front walkover wobble. (I saw someone mention it on twitter, but like you almost buy the cherography like Elle woods bend and snap)
Doesn’t excuse the judge who gave it a 9.95. That judge should be suspended at least a week.
Oh not saying that at all! 9.95 is a bit cray. It was just an impressive “dance out” considering how off balance she was. It was almost a fluid movement all the way thru!
If Mykayla Skinner had gotten a 10 on floor, there would’ve been a ten on every event this week. I WISH IT HAD HAPPENED.

There’s also ONE SENIOR on the all around rankings. Tbh If all the freshmen were seniors I wouldn’t be surprised. But they’re freshmen and they’re going to continue being amazing because why not.
I’m a little worried that some of these ex-elite gymnasts are going to have injuries. They are not used to competing every week, especially All-Around. I’m hoping they can stay healthy, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of them missing seasons (or partial seasons) due to injury (similar to Kupets tearing her Achilles her junior year).
I hope Burleson gets PAC-12 gymnast of the week (her highest AA total ever) and not Skinner. Spread the wealth.
I agree! I really wish conferences would actually look at all factors of a meet and athlete instead of just handing out gymnast/specialist/freshman of the week to the individual who had the highest score. What about someone competing AA for the first time and hitting it out of the park? What about a gymnast who competes for a lesser-known team and thus doesn’t get the scores building before her? What about a gymnast not competing in a 9.975/10 crazy meet?
I’ve noticed it with the SEC weekly awards. I think the SIDs just look at the scores and vote based on highest score without putting any thought into it. It drives me crazy.
Plus, the PAC could give Burleson gymnast of the week and Skinner freshman of the week.
Yes! Last week Kocian had the highest AA, and she was freshman of the week while McMillian from OSU was gymnast of the week! So there is hope 😉

UCLA should easily win this with a mid to high 197 (or a cray-cray 198), but picking the other NCAA qualifier is like a game of 52-pickup — just throw them up and see where they land.
