  1. Tough between Ohashi and Stacey Webb. Guys, definitely check out her routine. I know it’s easy just to look at the big names and be done, but Webb rocks it. I ended up voting for her over Ohasi. Truly an exceptional routine without anything I could see to take at all.

  2. I went with Stacie Webb’s beam! It was an absolutely gorgeous routine, and it’s so refreshing to see a perfect 10 come out of a non-powerhouse conference, and at an away meet too! Also, she was fourth up and following a fall, which is even more impressive because there was not a lot of score building going on. (I’m saying all this as a big Florida fan too)

  3. Wow, this was a really hard one … I’d never seen Lambert’s floor before and it’s so, so good. But then McMillan’s bars! And All 3 of those beam routines!!

    1. Same same same! I thought I knew what I was going for and then Lambert’s floor smacked me in the face. Plus Morgan Lane’s vault is super cool!

  4. I really appreciate that the video of Stacie Webb’s 10 came from a tweet from the BYU sports channel. I’m so glad to see that they appreciate great gymnastics, even when it’s done by the opposing team.

    1. Yes, I agree! Also, in the few meets of theirs I’ve watched, their commentators are always very positive towards both teams, which is so great to see!

  5. Pretty but no wow factor or anything unique in Webb’s routine at all though…unlike other beam 10s this season (Nichols’ dismount, Capps’ front aerial to scale, Ross’s switch ring to beat jump or Ohashi’s acro and dismount series).

    1. I would say the “wow” factor is that she’s an unknown from an unheralded team , at an away meet…and there wasn’t a deduction to take. She had lovely toe point and I liked her front aerial into her dismount, versus the gainer off the side we see so often…

      1. Well, I understand and agree that it’s great to see someone like her being awarded for a very clean routine. Her choreography towards the end was especially pretty.

It just seems kind of silly that a lot of people give Kyla a hard time for getting a 10 with a simple UB routine (which I agree, they should update the “up to competitive standard” requirement again next year) but are perfectly fine with Webb’s simple routine construction. The wow factor should come from the routine and not her unknown status?

      2. Her dismount was a side aerial-layout full, which is a very common NCAA dismount.

    2. I think the issue with Kyla is that she is a former Olympian and Workd Champion. People have high expectations for her execution and difficulty level, even if those expectations may not be entirely fair. Plus, when you look at what former elites at her level have done – Kupets, McCool, Sloan, Peszek, Skinner, Nichols, etc – they expect Kyla to keep her difficulty up to that level. Although to be fair, Kyla has always been about execution and not difficulty so her NCAA career has played out similarly to her elite career.

      1. I mean its also that they need to preserve the precious former elites. Like sure you want to see them do harder gymnastics that they are in no way required to do to be at the top of college gymnastics. But at what cost? Further injury? Just to prove they are better than a level 10 who cant do a fancy skill?

Ie Kocian and Ross like yeah their beam and bars are minimal but they are pretty and up to the level of the code. Just like every other gymnast’s routine. Its not elite, and above and beyond difficultly gets you nowhere if its not perfect. (as much as commenters on blogs demand certain skills into routines that arent required in order for an athlete to get a ten…)

      2. They should certainly look out for gymnasts’ long term health, but a single bar release on UB likely won’t cause Kyla to break.

I have never once heard any argument that Kyla or any gymnast with a watered down routine that starts out of a 10 shouldn’t get a 10 for a flawless routine. I, however, think fans are allowed to say they are a bit disappointed in the difficulty level of a former World Champion. That doesn’t take away from Kyla’s beauty or grace and doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve a 10.

  6. I have a great idea, at the end of the season have a ‘Best saves of 2017’ so you can include Katelyn Ohashi’s layout full, Peng’s double spin/front tuck, Mykayla Skinner’s weird wave cowboy thing after her back tuck, etc.

  7. I voted for Winston. Should have been a 10. Ohashi’s was just as great but she got the 10 so I’ll go with Kiana. : ) I was also impressed by Ashley Lambert’s floor (great DLO). Her hair was entertaining to watch too.

    1. I kept thinking Lambert’s hair was going to flap in her face at just the wrong time, and she was going to mess up a skill because she couldn’t see anything! Haha

      1. I’m always terrified when gymnasts have long ponytails because I’m certain it’s going to get caught up or mess them up!

  8. This week was the hardest choice for me. I voted for Winston because those leaps kill me! And the stuck double back at the end was so beautifully done.

  9. I was between Winston and Lambert. Yes, Webb was flawless, but I do have to agree with above commentors that there was no wow factor there for me. For the scoring, yes, give it the 10, but for something like this, I’m going to go with a routine that captures my attention. I went with Lambert because she just put on such a show.
