Attack of the Side Leap

In 2016, the split jump 1/2 and straddle jump 1/2 on beam both had B value.

Oh, what simple times those were.

Carefree almost.

For 2017, both the split jump 1/2 and straddle jump 1/2 have been revalued and bumped up to C elements.

At the same time, the one-tenth difficulty bonus for leaps beginning and ending in side position has been expanded to include those leaps with just a 1/2 twist.

Add it all up, and what does that spell?

It spells that the split jump 1/2 from side position and straddle jump 1/2 from side position, elements that 9 months ago would have been B skills, are now D skills.

THIS WILL BE GREAT FOR UPGRADES.

WHAT A COOL AND TRENDY D-SCORE HACK.

NOTHING COULD GO WRONG.

NOTHING AT ALL.

THIS IS GOOD AND NORMAL.

EVEN RAGAN SMITH IS FINE WITH IT.

BEAM WILL NEVER BE THE SAME IN A GOOD WAY.

7000 WORTH-IT POINTS FOR EASY SIDE LEAPS.

IT’S SO SIMPLE DO THE DANCE.

THE FUTURE IS SIDE LEAPS.

  1. isn’t this kind of an endorsement of the upgrade though? surely if a gymnast does one of those in a way that doesn’t look hideous, they deserve a D?

of course the problem is that they look like this and don’t get enough deductions to make them not worth it, but then we can blame the judges

  2. I feel like they should get connection bonus for connecting it to an immediate arm wave with your butt in the air lol. I think my eyes would bleed out of their sockets if someone did double & triple wolf turns with both of those leaps all in one routine. Please say no one’s done that yet. Please.

    1. Don’t worry, I bet the entire junior team is working in it as we speak.

  3. I love how Carina Jordan in that last GIF hit a solid 90-degree split. Petition to change the beam code to just “Routine must consist of only wolf turns and side leaps.”

  4. I hate this upgrade in the new code! There’s just no way to put those leaps into a routine without destroying the whole fluency and artistry of the routine. ;(

  5. I don’t see anyone from the GIFs above who didn’t incur at least 0.3 in deductions from a combination of missed splits and wobbles. I think Ragan got away with 0.1 (based on her D-score) but she was still pretty hunched over on her landing.

There legitimately needs to be a score analyst on the U.S. national team. Someone who knows enough to say “Yes, you get an extra tenth from starting this element sideways, but lose 0.6 for your not-even-close-to-a-split leg position and for doing the hokey pokey upon landing. Please do a normal jump to keep your D-score out of the 7s.”

    1. yes!!! are they even trying to hit a 180 split? side eye at last girl ….

  6. I wonder how long it will take this trend to catch on elsewhere? America is usually ahead of the curve when it comes to ugly but code-savvy dance elements on beam.

Although I agree anyone who can actually make this look good deserves a D.

  7. Ugh, Everyone is going to try to connect these out of Side Somis…. Ugliest combo ever

    1. I’d actually be surprised to see very many people attempt this combo. For one thing, it would be extremely difficult to actually connect those two. I can’t imagine many people would be able to consistently execute this smoothly enough to receive connection value. Additionally, this seems like a ton of risk for a little pay off. US Classic showed us that people are having a heck of a time doing these leaps by themselves without massive deductions/falls, let alone trying to do them in connection with a side somi. You can get the same amount of connection value out of one of those front aerial + two B jumps combos, and those seem a lot less likely to end disastrously than side somi + split/straddle jump from side.

  8. I want to see: strattle jump+split leap+ front aerial+ yang bo+ split jump+ side somi+ teza (leap)+teza (1/1 yurchenko loop)
    Talk about originality and epicness!

    1. i want: Front aerial+front aerial+no handed fhs+Bhs+bhs+back tuck full (done just as well as Sabina Cojocar herself or its a no go)+split jump+sissone+switch 1/2+onodi+kotchetkova+worley+straight jump 1.5
