Here is tonight’s D-Score setup, with Ragan Smith leading the field, though we don’t really get down to those outside of the medal hunt until the people in the mid-21s.

We don’t know anything more than in USAG’s tweet, that she was injured in the vault warmup and cannot compete.
Well, unless Morgan has a bottle of magic saved up, the American streak is going to end tonight.
Remember when this was the Ragan Smith v. Larisa Iordache battle for the all-around title?
Crisan replaces Smith in the top group. What if she just randomly wins? It does mean Romania has qualified someone into a final at this worlds. So that’s something…

No actual announcement has been made to the crowd about Ragan’s withdrawal, but it’s dawning on people that Ragan was not in the introduction with the lead group.

Black – VT – very good handspring front 1/1, small hop, leg form, but strong – 14.600. 9.2 is too high for that vault.
Crisan – VT – YOU’RE THE TOP 6 NOW IOANA. YOU DID A Y FULL.
French PA announcer just said that was Ragan Smith vaulting. Saddest.
12.266 for Moors. 6.966 E for a hit for her seems weird.
Perez falls on beam.
Mai – VT – EXCELLENT dty – small hop in place. Great start. Chest up. 14.666. Kind of hilarious that she got basically the same score as Black.
Derwael – UB – stalder piked tkatchev, good – derwael to Yezhova, good – shap to bhardwaj, strong and comfortable throughout – shap 1/2 – toe full , small step on tuck full. Another excellent set. She has become very consistent with that routine.
Hurd – VT – DTY, good, better than her qualification vault – hop back, good distance and direction. 14.966.
Tinkler – BB – switch mount – bhs loso series, secure – switch to wolf jump full – aerial, solid – switch 1/2, very short – 2/1 dismount, hop back –

MDJDS – VT – fine DTY, a little chest down and some leg form in the air, hop back.
Alt – UB – toe full to toe shap to pak – very clean – toe shap 1/2 to Alt I – good – stalder shap 1/2 – short handstand – piked jaeger, clean – Alt II dismount with a step.
Seitz finishes beam with switch to wolf, gainer pike, hop.
Lee – FX – literally just stepped out on choreography – oh honey – y spin not really – double pike – 25 is nice, small hop, composed legs –

Fidelis – BB – bhs arabian, falls again. Boo. bhs loso loso, falls again. Oh Thais.
Steingruber – UB – clear hip to toe shap to pak, nice, a little close on the pak and a short hs after – shap 1/2 – toe full very late, crazy legs on gienger – double front, step back. Mostly usual Giulia on bars, but she really racked up the deductions at the end.
Boyer – FX – 2.5 to front full, solid enough, hop with a little legs – double y into illusion, was basically falling sideways on the double y so she’ll get docked even though she connected – double tuck with a bounce back – falls out of triple spin – double pike, somewhat short, step forward.
Wang – BB – falls on mount, second fall on series – switch ring – large break again on switch 1/2 – just walks out of her aerial in an FML move – 2/1 dismount hop back. So that’s that.
Melnikova – UB – inbar full breaks connection – inbar to pak, clean – toe shap 1/2, legs – inbar 1/2 to piked jaeger, hit – short 1/2 turn pauses in handstand and has to add an extra swing – tuck full dismount, hop. Oh girl.

Varinska – BB – bhs bhs layout series, just a small step back – switch ring, scrapes her leg against the beam on her way down. Lightning doesn’t strike twice.
Boyer – VT – clean full and stuck, some piking, low difficulty but comfortable with her low difficulty.
Crisan’s bars score is taking forever. They can’t count to Romania?
Murakami – UB – toe on – toe shap to gienger, bery clean, legs together – a short hs – ssolid piked jaeger and regular jaeger – toe full to bail to shoot, very composed – flings out tuck full a little but fine, step.
Hermans – VT – piked down on yfull, hop back.
Alt – BB – layout mount, pretty and secure – side aerial to loso stepout, very precise – switch to switch 1/2, not bad – large check on aerial but saved it – nice shape on switch ring with a check – split leap to side somi – double tuck, stuck, great start for her.
Tinkler – FX – DLO 1/1, short with a lunge forward – better on double – not bad split jump 1.5 – switch full – short double pike as well with a hop.
13.8 on bars for Mai.
Hurd – UB – inabr full to tkatchev – stalder tkatchev to pak, some crazy legs on pak but worked out well – inbar 1/2 – stalder 1/1 hop in place on tuck full – better than qualification.
Steingruber – BB – switch split mount – front tuck, hop – bhs loso, form but secure – switch to side somi, a lean – full turn – hitting – gainer 1/1 dismount with hop.
14.300 for Hurd on bars, huge score. 8.500 E. Ahead of Murakami
Eremina – UB – Nabieve to pak to stalder to form break – toe shap 1/2 is good – inbar 1/2 to piked jaeger, hit – toe full to tuck full, hop. She totally lost her legs on her stalder circle, worked through it, but it should be a significant form deduction.
14.200 for Eremina. Lower than Hurd’s score. She did not need that.
Melnikova – BB – wolf turn single to stand up turn, wolfkino style – you wish you had a Wolfinko. Hit her layout! She has shown a bunch of pause deductions in here, but she’s hitting. great double pike, small hop.
MDJDS – UB – inbar tkatchev, hit – pak, feet but fine – toe shap 1/2, clean – inbar 1/2 goes over on a handstand and has to add an extra swing – DLO 1/1 is very good but the extra swing will hurt.
Still a 14.000 for MDJDS. 8.6 E. WAYYYY too high for an extra swing.
Black – UB – toe shap to hindorff, fingertips – piked hindorff is good – piked jaeger to pak, quick and solid – toe shap 1/2 – hop back on dismount. Another solid one.
Wang Yan was low on her first pass, stumbled backward on her double pike final pass. Not her day.
CA just called Black “Ellie Seitz.” Dude, you’re from here.
14.233 for Black, so she is tied with Hurd in first right now.
Moors – FX – double front 1/2 out (podkopayeva) with a hop back, lovely – fantastic carriage – 2.5 to front half, a little too piked in there – double attitude, and yes she’s falling out of it as she choreography falls, but it was pretty well around – excellent switch ring – split jump 1/1 – 2.5 to front tuck, two hits for her.
Sugihara did the double Y! We’ll see if she gets credit for it, but it looked pretty well around to me. Split ring toward the end of the beam – attempted 3/1 dismount, I would give 2.5.

Murakami – BB – switch split mount, good – front pike, hop – bhs loso, lean – switch ring, prob no credit – side aerial, small lean – double turn, and falls! MAI NO WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS. Well, everything is terrible – double pike, large hop back.
12.000 on beam
Hurd – BB – hits tuck full, a little lean this time but fine – side aerial to switch to split leap, pretty – leg-up wobble on loso series but saves it – another leg-up wobble on aerial – front tuck, check – full turn – switch ring, controlled, borderline credit – full in dismount – lunge back. She hit! Too many corrections in there, but with the mistakes others are making, getting through is a success.
Alt had a major OOB bounce on floor.
12.666 for Hurd on beam is not a good score, but it keeps her in first for the moment. Very vulnerable to Black and MDJDS still.
Eremina – BB – Y spin – loso series – aerial, small check – split leap to side aerial, hit – switch to split – some sort of split ring but not clear positions – 3/1 dismount, chest down and a step.
Steingruber hits DLO 1/1 – finsihes with a stuck double pike but she had an OOB in there in the middle.
Perez falls on DTY.
13.133 for Eremina gets her back into it, still behind Hurd but close.
Melnikova – FX – falls on double arabian – basically a disaster.
MDJDS – BB – excellent front pike mount – check on indistinct front salto – a little tentative on layout, hit, but not as laid out as she would like – switch 1/2, to back hs, quite short on switch half – aerial – switch ring, check – double tuck, two steps back.
Hermans – UB – shap to pak, toe shap 1/2 – piked jaeger, hit – nice 1/2 turn on top of the bar – toe on – tuck full, stuck, strong set.
Sugihara – FX – attempts triple y, will get double credit – 1.5 through to 3/1, a little under and won’t get stag connection – front 2/1 to front tuck – triple turn, a little indistinct in finishing position – back 2.5 to layout – switch leaps are nice – stuck double tuck
12.433 for MDJDS. Needed more to make up her ground.
Black – BB – switch split mount to switch to switch 1/2, only a small check, double turn with lean – front pike, hop back – bhs layout, solid, borderline credit – punch front huge break, grabs the beam, another large error working out of it, and another small error working out of the large error – double pike, small hop but grabbing the beam will seriously hurt the score.
12.866 for Black. How is that even mathematically possible? Two tenths ahead of Hurd.
Crisan finishing out the rotation on beam – had a rough side jump in there with a check, but basically beat everyone else on this disastrous group of beam routines.

13.733 is a big score for Hurd, and a big score given her errors.
Eremina – FX – full in, two steps back – double y spin – 1.5 through to 2.5 layout, good – drops out of double attitude turn – 3/1, a little short, but nice set.
13.600 Eremina, puts her currently in second.
Hop back on FTY for Derwael. Wang hits Ray, chest down and a hop.
MDJDS – FX – DLO 1/1, short with step forward – full in, small step – switch ring – split leap 1/1 – tries to connect stag out of third pass but stepped in between – double wolf turn – double tuck final pass, stagger backward and OOB. Damn.
Moors – UB – toe full, late – toe shap to bail, legs – stalder shoot – clear hip – khorkina, hit – hop back on dismount.
Hermans saves a large check on a double turn –
13.233 for MDJDS, currently into third.
Black – FX – popa, good – 2.5 through to double tuck, hop back – front 2/1 to front tuck, step – short on split leap 1/1 position – 2/1, hop. A fine routine, crowd goes wild, the way the scores have been going, I expect that to get the score she needs.
Tinkler – UB – toe full to toe shap to tkatchev to pak – a couple legs break – ohhh pauses in a pirouette and has to take a bunch of swings, oh just come off girl.
13.433 for Black – BEHIND HURD! I think it’s the appropriate result, but I’m surprised –
Everyone is losing everything right now. The Canadian fans because Ellie in second. The US fans because MORGGGGAAANNNNNN.
Mori – check on mount – legs on loso series, check – split jump 1/2 from side – a little short of split but secure – switch – side aerial – y spin – switch ring, won’t get credit – 2.5 twist dismount, hop forward. She hit.
Murakami would need a 14.800 to pass Hurd. The highest floor score of the competition so far is 14.433.
Murakami – FX – quad spin attempt, falls out a little so many only get triple – double double tuck, a little short but covers it with a stag – DLO, awesome – 2.5 to front full, small little stagger but so so small – switch ring – split leap 1.5 – double L turn, leg a little low so we’ll see – good double pike. Possible that she could get in for third.

Ohhhhh 14.233 for Murakami puts her into 4th. Sad for her. But also MORGAN HURD I CANNOT CONTINUE.

would someone please spell out what a DLO 1/1 is? My guess was double layout full twist in full twist out — how wrong am I?
No, it’s actually just a double layout with one full twist (not two) occurring sometime during the double layout whether it happens completely during the first flip like Jade Carey does or if it’s split between both flips like Simone Biles did. The one is put in the denominator of the fraction for clarity, but it’s meant to read as a fraction (i.e. 1 over 1 which is just 1), not as “one and one.” Similarly, saying “back layout 3/1” means triple twist, not three twists and then one. Does that make sense?

Ugh, Morgan’s floor score was definitely cooked. Was it to make up for Black’s beam being about .5 too high? I don’t know. This is definitely a trash worlds. I think Morgan would have won if the scores had been correct, but not by much. Maybe Mai Murakami will score a 16 on floor and take the whole thing? Who knows right now?!?!

Ellie was so crazy overscored on beam. I’m so relieved the floor score was accurate. Morgan Hurd for world leader. I haven’t been this happy in my entire life.
Morgan’s score seemed way too high for those landings. Don’t get me wrong, I’m ecstatic with the final result…. just annoyed that Ellie’s beam was so attacked while Morgan’s floor was “justified”
Eh, I’m not going to complain too much about people’s reactions because that’s kind of how this sort of situation works in sports. The initial overscore (or bogus foul call or whatever) draws a ton of outrage while the “make up call” doesn’t get near as much outrage because it “righted a wrong.” Regardless, I feel that the end result was probably the correct one, but I’m disappointed that it came to be the way it did. I wish they had just given Black the lower beam score she deserved and Hurd the lower floor score she deserved, and then we wouldn’t be in this whole mess.

I hate when the judge’s scores are not accurate. Then we’re left to debate Morgan’s floor score vs. Ellie’s beam score. If the judges had given the correct scores, there’d be no need to debate.

If you put your hands down on beam and flail your arms 10 times, you deserve major deductions. Ellie got none of those. Great athlete but Morgan did not fall or put her hands down. Her floor routine was majestic, passionate, and deserved the score she got. Best. day. ever.

No it wasn’t. But I feel like it balanced out Black’s BB over score tbh. I wish they had her them appropriately, but they didn’t, so this is what we’ve got. It’s done. And I do think they balanced each other out. It just sucks that the judges did that with it so close.
Ellie’s floor routine ended with a double twist…. that’s a level 10 dismount. The choreography was ok but pretty rough in places. It didn’t have the artistry of an aa title. To beat Morgan up over the AA title she deserves is just sad. Morgiboo nation!
I would give Morgan an 8.1 é score on floor and Elsabeth about 0.4 less than she got on beam. At the end of the day Morgan still wins. People tend to forget just how clean Morgan’s leaps and elements are. Her only deductions are those landings (of which her chest positions were so much better today) whereas Elsabeth’s leaps make my eyes hurt. Plus Morgan starts of with a DV 0.4 higher than Elsabeth’s. Morgan deserved that win, no contest.
Ughhh still gutted for Ragan, her and Morgan would have gone 1-2 most likely (assuming Ragan also hit). But SO SO happy that Morgan was able to pull it off!
Yeah, I know it’s a different day, different judges and anything could have happened, but Ragan’s qualifications score was 0.7 higher than Morgan’s score today. Don’t get me wrong, I’m absolutely thrilled for Morgan (there may have been some tears of joy!) and think she was definitely the best on the day, but I’m devastated for Ragan, as well as Larissa and even Mai with that beam fall, who will always have to wonder ‘what if?’.
You guys, Mai looks like she’s holding back a dam of tears and I just want to hug her so hard.

In all the scoring controversy, folks have overlooked the real miracle today: Crisan did not finish dead last.
I saw that when they put up the final results and I cheered. Good for her. And Romania. Maybe getting to be in the top group today will somehow help her in the future in some way? I don’t know how but, you never know.
I love Eremina and Murakami and wish both could have been in the medals for AA. I think Murakami is in the hunt for floor. And Eremina is my fave for bars. Here interview with gymcastic was everything.
1. An out-of-shape Simone Biles could have shown up and won the AA.
2. A 55-year old Nadia Comaneci could have put a leo on and won.

tbh simone probably could. a 7 point difference between her rio aa score and hurd’s aa score. Take 2 points away from the d score and she still have 5 points to give away in execution.
They also are judging much more harsh in places like BB. The e scores are lower for an equivalent performance. But it’s the beginning of the quad. Every new quad starts low and builds. Sure, this seemed really low, but it was close, exciting and fun.
Based on the training videos we’ve seen, Simone she could waltzed in with severely downgraded routines and still won. I selfishly wish Simone had just stuck it out for 2017. This would have been a cakewalk for her.
The only thing I can think is that the judges did not see Black’s beam grasp as she grabbed it from the other side of the judges’ view. I actually wasn’t sure at first and the camera was the side where she grabbed it. Isn’t a beam grasp a 0.8 deduction? The math doesn’t add up, but then again Hurd’s floor score was a bit questionable as well but in my opinion not as overscored as Black’s beam.
Based on everything, I feel the results were correct. I am gutted for Murakami as the gold was in her grasp! The beam was brutal to so many people and ultimately it was those who survived it who got medals.
This new scoring (if it stays this brutal) is going to be hard to get used to. We have a World Champion who scored in the 12s on an event…
A beam grasp is 0.5 but that is not all of the deductions she’d receive. That’s the minimum. The judges must not have seen the beam grasp. Her score was way too high. Morgan’s beam was very nice. Just some balance checks. Her score was too low.
I don’t understand the guys about Ellie B….frankly her form is dreadful throughout. Massive overscoring on beam, esp compared to Morgan’s difficulty and her NOT grabbing the beam.
But the real craziness is floor. Morgan has artistry ans much higher start value with 4 passes. Ellie’s “dance” was…..hideous. Kind of waddling from move to pose with her feet flexed. Her tumbling was sloppy with slightly bent legs and just a DT to end – and 3 passes. Aliya M can get away w that because she fills the time with incredibly complex dance. Ellie’s was a joke. Clearly the judges were trying to make her win. That floor didn’t deserve more than a 12.5 or so

Completely agree with this. Ellie is a lovely person but is just not a floor worker. Three tumbling passes, the last is a C, and the dance is… rough.
