National Team Rankings – January 2018

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated on the 1st of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. These current rankings include only scores from July 2017–December 2017, and now that 2018 has arrived, the newly senior 2002 babies have been added, noted with a “(2002)” next to their names.

Entering the rankings this month were Poland, Belarus, Croatia, Latvia, Greece, Bulgaria, Bolivia, and Cyprus, while leaving the rankings were Cuba, Puerto Rico, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama, temporarily without enough scores on each event in the last six months to put together a team.

Last month’s ranking is in parentheses.

Previous rankings

November 2017

October 2017
September 2017
August 2017
July 2017
June 2017

1. (1) RUSSIA – 176.949
Elena Eremina 14.033 15.175 14.450 14.275
Angelina Melnikova 14.625 14.966 14.825 14.425
Anastasia Ilyankova 13.600 15.275 14.150 0.000
Angelina Simakova (2002) 15.050 14.100 13.300 13.200
Maria Kharenkova 13.725 12.100 15.350 14.500
176.949 43.708 45.416 44.625 43.200
The only change Russia experiences this month is the newly eligible Simakova’s rudi score knocking out the Cheng score from Paseka, who is now going to be out for an extended period anyway.
2. (2) UNITED STATES – 175.649
Ragan Smith 14.466 14.550 15.350 14.433
Emma Malabuyo (2002) 14.700 14.100 14.450 14.300
Jade Carey 15.066 0.000 14.050 14.400
Jordan Chiles 15.150 14.000 14.200 13.700
Kara Eaker (2002) 13.700 13.500 15.150 13.700

175.649

44.916 42.650 44.950 43.133
Shakeups abound for the US with that crop of new seniors, but it was the beam score for Eaker and the floor score for Malabuyo that proved the most useful to the team total. Many permutations involving O’Keefe, Hurd, Thomas, McCusker, Perea, and Kenlin produce similar scores, but this one is the highest.
3. (4) CHINA – 172.966
Chen Yile (2002) 14.500 14.300 14.550 13.700
Lyu Jiaqi 0.000 14.866 12.600 11.133
Liu Tingting 14.300 13.967 14.867 13.500
Li Qi (2002) 14.267 0.000 15.250 13.700
Fan Yilin 0.000 15.166 13.567 11.467
172.966 43.067 44.332 44.667 40.900
China moves back ahead of Japan for the first time in many months on the strength of what should be a very useful duo of new seniors in Chen and Li.
4. (3) JAPAN – 172.366
Asuka Teramoto 15.000 14.000 14.400 13.766
Mai Murakami 14.950 13.900 14.350 14.800
Sae Miyakawa 14.900 0.000 0.000 13.133
Yuna Hiraiwa 13.850 11.150 14.200 13.850

5. (6) BRAZIL – 168.267
Rebeca Andrade 15.150 14.450 0.000 0.000
Fabiane Valentin (2002) 14.350 13.600 14.200 13.400
Thais Fidelis 14.100 12.800 14.000 14.200
Lorrane Oliveira 13.400 13.267 12.233 12.233
Daniele Hypolito 14.100 12.750 13.750 13.800
167.400 43.600 41.317 41.950 41.400
Even without the scores from Saraiva, Brazil manages to move up a spot because of the four counting scores from new senior Fabiane Valentin.
6. (9) CANADA – 167.914
Brooklyn Moors 14.166 13.200 12.266 13.866
Laurie Denommee 13.450 12.600 12.550 13.550
Brittany Rogers 14.500 12.900 13.266 0.000
Ana Padurariu (2002) 13.500 14.033 14.333 13.100
Ellie Black 14.650 14.400 14.400 13.550
167.914 43.316 41.633 41.999 40.966
Ana Padurariu happens. It’s also interesting that the floor score for Denommee this month in France was so high that it knocked off Olsen, whose 13.1 from worlds no longer ranked as a top-3 Canadian floor score.
7. (7) FRANCE – 167.332
M De Jesus Dos Santos 14.550 14.650 13.700 13.550
Lorette Charpy 13.400 14.350 12.666 12.933
Marine Boyer 13.766 13.200 14.250 13.200
Juliette Bossu 13.550 14.166 13.150 13.400
Coline Devillard 14.600 0.000 0.000 0.000
167.332 42.916 43.166 41.100 40.150
France does not have a particularly deep group of new seniors this year (wait until 2019) but nonetheless improves on last month’s total by a full point because of big scores from the Toyota International.
8. (10) ROMANIA – 166.880
Nica Ivanus (2002) 13.150 0.000 13.700 12.100
Carmen Ghiciuc 12.066 12.833 13.000 12.166
Larisa Iordache 14.800 14.533 15.566 14.266
Denisa Golgota (2002) 14.500 12.433 13.100 13.600
Ioana Crisan 13.666 12.600 13.766 13.050
166.880 42.966 39.966 43.032 40.916
Romania has a couple new 2018 seniors to lean on in the hope of mitigating the loss of scores from the Great Exodus of 2017. But, when the scores from September’s Romanian nationals come off, things aren’t going to be pretty.
9. (5) GERMANY – 166.633
Leah Griesser 13.000 13.650 13.750 13.050
Tabea Alt 14.500 14.200 13.650 12.933
Pauline Schaefer 14.100 13.000 13.700 13.500
Sarah Voss 14.600 12.100 13.100 13.033
Elisabeth Seitz 13.700 14.900 12.433 13.000
166.633 43.200 42.750 41.100 39.583
It’s Germany that takes the hit this month in this highly volatile 5-10 group with large June scores coming off the rankings and no top-level 2018 seniors to prop things back up.
10. (8) UKRAINE – 166.124
Diana Varinska 13.716 14.583 13.650 13.250
Anastasiya Belyaeva 13.775 10.100 10.650 13.550
Valeria Osipova 13.900 13.800 14.150 14.150
Angelina Radivilova 0.000 13.300 10.800 12.250

11. (11) GREAT BRITAIN – 164.198
Amy Tinkler 14.533 13.600 12.800 13.500
Phoebe Turner 14.333 10.900 11.600 12.650
Alice Kinsella 14.000 13.533 13.033 13.150
Georgia-Mae Fenton 0.000 14.533 12.500 12.250
Claudia Fragapane 0.000 12.900 13.250 13.933

12. (12) ITALY – 163.016
Giada Grisetti 13.650 13.800 12.900 12.550
Martina Basile (2002) 13.800 12.600 13.900 13.100
Vanessa Ferrari 0.000 0.000 13.500 13.600
Sydney Saturnino (2002) 13.200 13.450 13.750 12.600
Lara Mori 13.500 13.466 13.050 13.500
163.515 41.600 40.166 41.016 40.733
It’s not the massive influx of new scores that will come with the 2019 seniors, but Italy is kept slightly afloat by a couple 2002 babies, finally delivering some new blood to the senior national team.
13. (14) NETHERLANDS – 162.250
Eythora Thorsdottir 14.300 12.667 13.067 13.033
Sanne Wevers 0.000 13.933 14.100 0.000
Tisha Volleman 14.500 11.900 12.333 13.433
Lieke Wevers 0.000 0.000 13.667 0.000
Sanna Veerman (2002) 14.000 12.967 12.000 12.650
162.250 42.800 39.500 40.834 39.116
New senior Sanna Veerman proves useful to the Netherlands because of the difficulty of putting together a team of five without having vault and floor scores from the Weverseseses right now, while still needing their beam scores.
14. (13) BELGIUM – 161.506
Axelle Klinckaert 13.800 12.100 11.950 13.150
Nina Derwael 13.566 15.033 12.900 13.366

158.183 42.266 39.950 39.967 37.650
Hungary should be slightly reinvented in 2018 with the introductions of Feher and Peter to the senior mix, two gymnasts who should be making teams along with Kovacs and providing a competitive core.
17. (16) SWITZERLAND – 159.633

  1. Oh, thank you! New seniors, yeah…
There just seems to be a problem with the numbers of Romania, they don’t to add up.

  2. Is Emma Malabuyo’s 14.7 vault based on a 5.5 D score (rather than a 5.4)? Does that change anything?

  3. I am so shocked at how Australia has fallen in the rankings. At one point they finished as high as 3rd at the World Championships. Granted that was years ago. I hope Brestyan can infuse some talent into their program. Exactly what is their deal.. lack of depth, lack of difficulty? Also, I am glad that Ukraine is back in the top 10.. Yeah!!! Romania, though, once those scores for Iordache come off, they will be out of the top for sure..

    1. Well take these scores with a grain of salt. It’s not like these are actual teams that have competed. It’s taking the top scores from the athletes and making a 5 member squad with the highest possible scores as team totals. These rankings are not likely to happen at Worlds this year, but it gives an indicator at to the potential of the teams. I am not quite sure Ukraine is a top 16 team….yet. They have potential though. Australia is better than it’s current ranking- they have had a lack of competitions this year. Once Pac Rims and Commonwealth Games hit this year, those scores will rise up. Great Britain is certainly better than 11th place and definitely not ranked behind Ukraine or Romania. Speaking of which, Romania is 8th? No way, no how. Not with Iordache out for the year and not with those inflated Rom Nationals scores. I would say Great Britain is 5th-8th depending on what is up with the Downie sisters. Romania would be lucky to make the top 20 right now IMO.

    2. Lack of depth, lack of difficulty, lack of competitive experience. Australian gymnasts don’t compete outside Australia enough. They’re better than Spencer’s ranking though. As for Brestyan infusing talent into the program, I doubt it, since he’s not spending an awful lot of time in Australia and therefore won’t see many juniors. He’ll make the Australian gymnasts fitter though…
