National Team Rankings – January 2018

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated on the 1st of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. These current rankings include only scores from July 2017–December 2017, and now that 2018 has arrived, the newly senior 2002 babies have been added, noted with a “(2002)” next to their names.

Entering the rankings this month were Poland, Belarus, Croatia, Latvia, Greece, Bulgaria, Bolivia, and Cyprus, while leaving the rankings were Cuba, Puerto Rico, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama, temporarily without enough scores on each event in the last six months to put together a team.

Shakeups abound for the US with that crop of new seniors, but it was the beam score for Eaker and the floor score for Malabuyo that proved the most useful to the team total. Many permutations involving O’Keefe, Hurd, Thomas, McCusker, Perea, and Kenlin produce similar scores, but this one is the highest.

    There just seems to be a problem with the numbers of Romania, they don’t to add up.

  2. Is Emma Malabuyo’s 14.7 vault based on a 5.5 D score (rather than a 5.4)? Does that change anything?

  3. I am so shocked at how Australia has fallen in the rankings. At one point they finished as high as 3rd at the World Championships. Granted that was years ago. I hope Brestyan can infuse some talent into their program. Exactly what is their deal.. lack of depth, lack of difficulty? Also, I am glad that Ukraine is back in the top 10.. Yeah!!! Romania, though, once those scores for Iordache come off, they will be out of the top for sure..

    1. Well take these scores with a grain of salt. It’s not like these are actual teams that have competed. It’s taking the top scores from the athletes and making a 5 member squad with the highest possible scores as team totals. These rankings are not likely to happen at Worlds this year, but it gives an indicator at to the potential of the teams. I am not quite sure Ukraine is a top 16 team….yet. They have potential though. Australia is better than it’s current ranking- they have had a lack of competitions this year. Once Pac Rims and Commonwealth Games hit this year, those scores will rise up. Great Britain is certainly better than 11th place and definitely not ranked behind Ukraine or Romania. Speaking of which, Romania is 8th? No way, no how. Not with Iordache out for the year and not with those inflated Rom Nationals scores. I would say Great Britain is 5th-8th depending on what is up with the Downie sisters. Romania would be lucky to make the top 20 right now IMO.

    2. Lack of depth, lack of difficulty, lack of competitive experience. Australian gymnasts don’t compete outside Australia enough. They’re better than Spencer’s ranking though. As for Brestyan infusing talent into the program, I doubt it, since he’s not spending an awful lot of time in Australia and therefore won’t see many juniors. He’ll make the Australian gymnasts fitter though…
