It’s Pac-12 Saturday, beginning with Cal’s visit to Washington and Arizona State’s visit to Stanford, both meets I’m quite interested in because…how is Cal after the BYU debacle? Is Arizona State better than Stanford this year? We have a lot of questions.

#25 Cal @ #15 Washington

Burleson and Roberson in the AA for Washington. Williams and George in the AA for Cal.

Profiling Hailey Burleson. Blood clot, rib removed, that sounds easy and normal. Come on. Do an Amanar.

ROTATION 1

Copiak – VT – solid height on full, comes in shortish with a hop forward, will also get deducted for distance. 9.700.

So Seilnacht – UB – piked Jaeger to overshoot, good toe point – shortish cast handstand – stuck 1.5 twist dismount with a slight leg stagger. Clean opener. 9.850

Riley – VT – Y1/2, nice to hold the stick on the landing, with a lean and bend. 9.800.

Graphic tells us that Yfulls start from 9.500. Nope.

George – UB – arches first handstand, goes over, tries to recast and fix it but can’t – fall – tkatchev – bail,. good vertical, leg break – short final handstand – sticks FTDT.

Roy – VT – Tsuk 1/2, another good landing, just like Riley, holds the stick on her 1/2 with a lean.

Shu – UB – toe on to tkatchev to overshoot – good, keeps those legs together on overshoot – short final handstand – well crap. FTDT dismount, fall, hands down. Cal already counting bars fall.

Hoffa – VT – Full – pretty clean form in the air on full – step back, some piking at the end – solid. Off direction.

Williams – UB – strong Hindorff – clear hip to bail, hits vertical, small leg break – hitting handstands just a little muscled – DLO with lunge forward.

Burleson – VT – Great height on a full – clear piking at the end – lunge back – good

No Kuc with an ankle injury. WELL I GIVE UP.

Schank – UB – toe shoot, pretty – pulls back an arched handstand – pretty piked jaeger to overshoot – good toes and leg form – DLO, small shuffle – tons of potential there. 9.925 is a little high for that, but a pretty set.

Roberson – VT – excellent amplitude and direction on her full, hop back, good direction and dynamics –

Sternberg – UB – toe on to Ray, quite close but caught it – solid bail – hesitation on step up to high – short final hs – double front, stumble back and sits it down.

Well that rotation was terrible. Guys.

After 1: Washington 48.950, 47.900

Some solid vaults for Washington. They should be fairly pleased with that rotation. I thought the scores over-judged landings, you?

Cal with three falls on bars for second bars-disaster week in a row. If you’re looking for positives, the hit routines were quite pretty. Cal really doesn’t have any business being bad on bars this year with those toes.

ROTATION 2

Gallarzo – VT – Y1/2, YIKERS, lands lock-legged and falls. No injury it appears, thankfull, short enough so that it was just a fall, not worse.

Nelson – UB – short first handstand – hits Jaeger, catches a tad close, some hesitations in these handstands – Pak, some legs – final handstand better – giant to double tuck, stuck.

Keelen – VT – pretty large bounce back on a full – nice height, some piking

Roberson – UB – efficient piked jaeger to overshoot, good – flings DLO a tad, still finishes easily, hop back

Matrangelo – VT – Full – pretty good control on the landing, hop in place – pike down at the end, fairly flat off the table, pulled it around

Washington – UB – full turn to Gienger, good legs maintained – hits bail vertical position – giant full to double tuck, also stuck. Some late finishes, particularly on the full turns, but composed set, nothing major.

George – VT – Strong dynamics on her full – small hop in place. Best of the rotation by quite a margin. Good.

Riley – UB – small arch on first cast – toe on to toe shap to bail, solid – short final handstand – DLO, comes in shortish with a hop forward. Improving on bars.

Williams – VT – Elects to go for the full, not the 1.5, safe because they already had a fall – basically sticks it – strong amplitude. Will be nice score. 9.900.

Copiak – UB – also small arch early – strong CHurch – FTDT sticks, good set and good rotation.

Robinson – VT – fhs handspring front pike, sticks it. Very nice! One of her best ones. Just a little bit of a squat in stick, and you’re never going to get Yurchenko distance on that vault -0 but excellent.

Burleson – UB – half turn to tkatchev – good – clean handstands – hitting her vertical on bails – shortish on the last one – giant full to double tuck with hop forward.

After 2: Washington 98.050, Cal 96.825

Well, it was going terribly for Cal for a while, but those last few vaults pulled things back a little bit. Still think Robinson gets underscored on her vault because it’s being evaluated with Yurchenko distance in mind, but that’s a wider issue for another day. Washington as the scores would lead you to believe, a very composed bars rotation with no standout performances but no major mistakes either.

ROTATION 3

Schaefer – BB – aerial with a check – loso series, very secure, nice leg form – full turn – split jump to stag ring, nice shapes – 1.5 with a hop.

WILL YOU ALL STOP IT WITH THE CUPPING, NCAA GYM?

So Seilnacht – FX – front lay to rudi, lands cruched down but securely – smooth illusion – split leap 1.5, hits split, somewhat uncontrolled landing it – 1.5 to half to split to front tuck, jussssst got that half to her feet and kept the pass going, Chinese twisting entry angle – 1.5 to front pike

Washington – BB – comfortable loso series, just swings her arms down to avoid a check – same on side aerial, does well to cover being slightly off – switch side to straddle jump combo, not sure I would give connection – front layout with step forward

Shu – FX – secure double tuck, chest position – double pike, slide back, good “yeeeeaauueeee” facial expression on landing – 1.5 to front pike, pulls it around

Goings – BB – bhs bhs loso, good – beat to straddle 1/4 – full turn – loso with a check – not quite there with the smooth confidence she showed last season but she’s still coming back – side aerial to stuck full. Hit.

Robinson – FX – very strong double arabian landing, nailed landing – 1.5 to front pike, lunge forward, keeps it in bounds – double pike, controlled step back

Copiak – BB – full turn – strong loso series, extended, secure, nice – switch 1/2 with a check, largish – side aerial to beat jump – 1.5, stuck. 9.625 is a little harsh for that, but I’m kind of obsessed with this harsh beam scoring.

Keelen – FX – double pike, secure, chest position, a theme – switch ring to switch side to wolf jump full, somewhat indistinct landing positions – lay to 1/2 second pass, easy for her – rudi, a little underrotated with a bounce up

Roberson – BB – switch to straddle 1/4, nice – full turn – standing loso loso series, good rhythm to make that a series, small check – sticks gainer full – she can get deducted for landing with the legs too far apart, even though stuck

George – FX – front 2/1 first pass with a bounce out – switch ring to split leap full, awesome extension and height, just a little bouncy on landing – front tuck through to rudi, good twisting position, keeps controlled – double tuck, short with a lunge forward

Burleson – BB – aerial to bhs series with a check in between – beam judging has been tight so we’ll see if they give that as an acro series – side aerial through to switch leap, nice shape on switch – straddle jump to straddle 1/4, extended fairly well – full turn – side aerial to a stuck full. 9.800, so they gave her the series, which is more charitable than I expected.

Williams – FX – hairography – DLO, pulls it around well and controls the step back – switch side 1/2 to straddle 1/2 – front layout to front full – double pike, excellent, chest up and nailed landing.

After 3: Washington 146.900, Cal 145.825

Beam scoring will make Washington’s beam seem a little worse than it was. What it was was fine. Not as smooth and confident as we saw at times last season, but perfectly fine. Cal struggled with some chest position and some final pass landings at times in there, but Williams was rewarded for a very strong set with 9.925. I agree with the comment about liking the scoring standard in this meet overall. It should be a tutorial for some of the other judging groups out there.

ROTATION 4

So Seilnacht – BB – full turn – very strong loso series, secure and keeps her legs straight – beat jump to straddle 3/4, fall, had under rotated her 3/4 and didn’t land in a position she could save – side aerial to full, small slide back

Schaefer – FX – double pike, nice and high, small slide back – front full to layout to double stag, some arch in layout – double tuck, secure. 9.875 seems out of character with the other scores so far today.

Shu – BB – aerial to bhs acro series with a lean correction in between, but they gave it to Burleson – switch 1/2, secure – full turn with check – when you have back turn choreography on a very chalky beam and give your butt a racing stripe – side somi, solid – side aerial to full, short iwth hop forward

Roy – FX – double pike, very nice, secure, toes pointed – switch side to wolf jump full, amazing height but still somewhat crooked on switch side – front full to layout, good straight position but lunge forward out of it – double tuck, huge bounce backward out of it, will take away the score

George – BB – wolf double, hit – aerial to bhs, smooth – switch to split to beat jump – awesome high double tuck dismount with legs together, nearly stuck

Roberson – FX – front 2/1, controls her crossover step pretty well this time – rudi to loso, excellent, good shape in twisting and extended legs – switch ring to wolf hop full not a strength of this routine, shortish of extension – double tuck, gets her foot stuck a little in the mat with a small stumble, but not much

Keelen – BB – bhs loso series, check and lean to the side, bend at the hips but saves it – aerial to split jump with small check – 1.5 dismount, stuck. Worked it through after the early issue

Hoffa – FX – nice double pike, chest up, toes pointed – front lay to front full, didn’t get much of a punch there in that full but got it around – hits split and wolf positions – double tuck, small stagger foot on landing, but good.

Gallarzo – BB -aerial to bhs loso, comfortable, solid – switch to split, hit, short of 180 – 1.5 with hop

Stanford and ASU starting!

Cole – VT – Stanford – hop back on full – some wonky knees- but fine

Washington – FX – Washington – confident double tuck, chest up -hitting split positions well – front lay to front full – double pike, a little down with a bounce. 9.900 for that seems to be judging lineup order.

Szafranski – UB – ASU – Strong Ray, short of vertical on bail – giant to double tuck, hop

Navarro – VT – Stanford – yfull, large bounce back, pike in the air and knee form

Williams – BB – Cal – standing front tuck to loso, huge break on loso, lots of leaning at the hips and swimming but she stays on – switch switch dance series –

Bryant – VT – Stanford – excellent height on her full, sticks with legs apart. Good.

Burleson – FX – high double pike, slide back – 1/5 through to double full. 2.5 with lunge forward.

A Szafranski – UB – ASU – Shap to Pak series, mostly pretty but legs apart throughout – short handstand – DLO with hop forward

Flam – VT – Stanford – sits her Omelianchik, she cannot get that vault so far this year.

Kuhm – UB – ASU – short first hs – toe on – toe shap, good legs together, could get a little more backswing – hits Jaeger – precise bail – lots in this routine – a couple short handstands – DLO with step back.

Price – VT – Stanford – Identical full to last week. Nailed. Excellent.

Leonard- Baker – UB – huge height on tkatchev – bail – pretty close on handstands – FTDT pretty much stuck but staggered legs, strong

Super high Tkatchev in exhibition from ASU, and falls on it. But super high.

Dare we expect we might get scores from the first rotation? OH OF COURSE NOT.

ASU 48.950, Stanford 48.900

is what it sounds like the PA announcer said on the feed.

“You’re probably following along on another website.”

Yes.

FINAL: Washington 196.325, Cal 194.850

Not super good from Cal. Washington will take that score.

ROTATION 2

OK Stanford is going to bars. Hold your breath through the whole thing. Which should be easier because there are only 5 again.

First vault ASU – hop back on full.

Lawson – UB – hits Shap – leg break in bail – very late giant full – flings out double tuck with a hop forward. 9.675.

ASU – VT – pretty good open on her full but ends up coming in short with a hop forward

Navarro – UB – arch in first cast handstand – hits tkatchev – very short cast handstand – pak with leg break – nice vertical on half turn on low at least – really struggling with her handstands – FTDT dismount, step forward

Kuhm – VT – pretty open shape maintained nearly the whole time, minorish hop back

Flim Flam – UB – toe 1/2 to Jaeger, caught – tight handstand afterward – crazy-legs on the bail, very crazy legs – also struggling with handstands – DLO 1/1 with a large lunge forward. Why go for that when bars is hanging by a thread?

Leonard-Baker – VT -excellent dynamics on her full, leans forward to try to hold the stick but ends up stepping

Bryant – UB – nice first handstand – hits tkatchev – very good toe point, awesome bail shape – this is quite good – DLO with step back. Like night and day compared to the rest of the lineup.

Wilson – VT – solid full, nice pop, some pike, step back

Price – UB – toe shap to clear hip, strong – Church to bail usual comfortable and rail straight – DLO, maybe the smallest slide on the DLO this time, but pretty much her normal. One of the things you can’t point out in her routine is the bent elbows on that last cast handstand, but if you’re not taking it for other people, then you can’t start taking it in this one. 9.950. Pretty fair.

Rushton – VT – tucked Yfull, off to the side with a large step – they pulled Ginn from the lineup and put in Rushton, in the anchor spot. Lentz or theoretically Ginn did exhibition and struggled on her own tucked full. Still got a 9.750 for that exho which I don’t understand?

I’m realizing at this moment I don’t know a lot of the ASU gymnasts by sight. I should probably work on that.

After 2: ASU 97.825, Stanford 97.575

Both teams under 196 pace through two. Stanford kind of got through bars? But it remains a lineup of two, with three other people shoved out there trying to get through their routines for 9.6s, which is what happened today. ASU OK on vault but nothing standout. There aren’t a lot of big vaults besides CLB, meaning they really need landings.

Ftizgerald – BB – full turn – hitch kick to front aerial two feet, deepish but secure – beat jump to split 3/4, can’t save it and a fall – aerial with a pause to back tuck, risking her acro series there –

Christopherson – FX – double pike, bounce back – same on double tuck but smaller slide – close to hitting those straddles – switch through to double stag, not so extended end the switch – 1.5 to layout, not much in the layout, a little flat and had to arch it around

Cole – BB – bhs loso series, hit – switch to switch series, not too bad – aerial with a small lean as she works into a beat jump – 2/1 with small step

Lentz – FX – double pike, secure, chest position – 1.5 to layout, also had to straddle to pull that around – double tuck, pulls around, slide back

Tai – BB – bhs loos bhs series with a lean at the end, loses her knees a little as the series goes on – switch to straddle 3/4 from her, not 180 on switch – full turn with check – 1.5 with pace forward

Ginn – FX – front tuck through to double tuck, strong, chest up, controlled – front lay to front 1/2, simple pass but well executed – large bounce back out of double pike –

Price – BB – aerial, smooth – bhs to two-foot layout, quite secure – long pause beforehand but it’s a difficult series, so – full turn, strong – switch to split, has worked on making sure she’s really hitting those positions in her NCAA career, she didn’t hit them formerly – STICKS DOUBLE PIKE. She is ridiculous. 9.950 again.

K Szafranski – FX – double pike, solid – double tuck, nice open shape, good control – split leap 1.5 to straddle, some slightly indistinct landing position – 1.5 to layout with a bit of a lunge forward.

Navarro – BB – bhs loso, quite pretty, extended, just the smallest slide back with that front foot – full turn, small check – aerial, hit – switch to split, short back leg – sticks her double tuck. Strong ending, a couple moments of tentativeness, but pretty well hit.

Kuhm – FX – whip to double tuck, quite short with a lunge forward – front layout front full front tuck, nice – switch and switch 1/2 – 2.5 with crossover step.

Bryant – BB – layout stepout series, secure – whips her hands down to cover any shakiness – beat to split ring jump, somewhat indistinct back leg but good – strong front tuck – another nailed double tuck dismount. Well, they are not skimping on the dismount difficulty and are hitting it.

Leonard-Baker – FX – double tuck, secure, a bit of chest position – split leap full to popa, very short of 180 on her straddle position – 1.5 to front full, bouncy – solid double pike.

Good beam rotation for Stanford following that first fall. You see the shades of a really excellent team when you see all those stuck double backs at the end of the lineup. Lawson is doing exhibition – nice leaps, lay-pike series is hit – also doing a double tuck dismount but hers isn’t quite there yet with a lunge forward. Future possibility for sure though.

Arizona and UCLA starting.

Leydin lunge back on Yfull.

Honest – we see the end of her routine – not one of her stronger dismounts, lunge forward on FTDT.

We’ll we’ve had one routine each, so we obviously need an extended pause.

Cowles – VT – AZ – full, some piking, fiarly big bounce back

Are we seriously not getting to see the UCLA routines? “UCLA needs to try to speed up the meet. They have prior engagements after this.” So apparently they are performing at the same time because UCLA can’t be bothered to do this meet.

Mattson – VT – AZ – Y1/2 hop forward

Ohashi – UB – Hits Tkatchev, finishes DLO, small slide back

After 3: Arizona State 146.925, Stanford 146.725

Cindric – VT – AZ – full, pretty distinct pike in the air, another lunge back.

Hano – UB – falls on Jaeger. But she’s doing bars!

Bellows – VT – AZ – adds in her 1.5 – some knees throughout, lunge forward

Arizona only doing 5 on vault.

Cole – FX – 2.5 to front tuck – ends up going kind of sideways but hit – punch rudi is solid – switch ring to switch 1/2, low front leg on switch ring – front full to front pike, lowish but solid

Ross – UB – Shap to bail, very clean – nice shoot back to high – hitting handstands – DLO, tries to pretend she stuck but she didn’t with a lunge forward salute. Otherwise clean. 9.925.

Leonard-Baker – BB – ASU – straddle jump to loso, short on straddle position –

Lee – UB – hits Ray well – nice toes and vertical – hits Bhardwaj, toe on toe Shap 1/2, very strong, hitting handstands – struggles on DLO, very short and large lunge forward on it – otherwise great

Kooyman doing exhibition for UCLA, as she has been doing but we haven’t been getting to see it – toe shap but flat with some legs – into pak – FTDT with large lunge forward.

Lawson with a stumble back OOB on floor for Stanford.

After 1: UCLA 49.250, Arizona 48.750

Scores seemed high there for UCLA, but it’s also hard to say because we say bits and pieces early in the rotation and didn’t see Dennis at all.

Navarro – FX – Stanford – split leap 1.5 – double tuck, small step back – 1.5 to layout, some crossed legs, good layout positions – switch ring to switch 1/2, nearly there, keeps her toes through it – double tuck, short landing with bounce forward

Kuhm – BB – ASU – bhs loso series, hit – full turn with large stumble, lean but keeps it on the beam, aerial with another leg-up check – switch to sheep – 2/1 dismount, two small steps back

Flam – FX – Stanford – double Arabian with a hop to the side but I do appreciate her lack of cowboy – front pike through to double pike, secure landing – switch side to popa, pretty solid positions – double pike, bouncy slide back

A Szafranski – BB – ASU – nice aerial to korbut – side aerial, well extended – switch to split, could be a little more 180 – illusion turn with a check – Rulfova, it’s awkward on her (and everyone) but cool that she’s doing it – gainer full step to the side.

Schneider – UB – Arizona – hits gienger – bail, loose back but hit –  DLO, near stick

Ohashi just vaulted. Well now. Pretty good control on landing her full.

Price – FX – Stanford – A very Price DLO, just a bit short with a hop forward – front tuck through to double tuck, very nice, chest up, controlled step – switch side and popa, strong – double pike, pretty solid, legs from this angle.

Dennis – VT – UCLA – great height and open on full – hop back, looked like it might have been a pretty big hop back

Christopherson – ASU – BB – beat jump double stag is strong – kickover front to Korbut, secure – 1.5, stuck

Hoffman – FX – Stanford – front tuck through to rudi, flat but solidly completed – switch ring to split leap full, same – double tuck, pulled it around because of magic I think, step forward – rudi to double stag, a little bouncy

We have a fall on a Gienger for Arizona from Dani Spencer.

One of the Glenns just did vault exhibition for UCLA with a full.

Price went 39.775 in the AA today, the highest AA score of the season so far.

After 2: UCLA 98.550, Arizona 97.925

Scoring looks fairly loose at UCLA/Arizona.

FINAL: Arizona State 196.250, Stanford 195.650

ROTATION 3

Schneider – BB – full turn – kickover front, large break with leg up – switch to split, low back leg on switch – kickover again to bhs to get acro connection, lean in between, we’ll see – beat to sheep – front full dismount, hop back

Kramer – FX – front double full to front tuck, right into the corner like we’ve come to expect from her, quite clean – 1/5 to layout with a hop to the side – switch side to popa, solid split positions – I enjoy this choreography as well – rudi to straddle, another solid floor showing.

Leydin – BB – wolf turn – switch to split, good toes – bhs loso with a lean, strong amplitude on the series – hitch to side somi, keeps her center of gravity over the beam well – pike jump to back tuck, and a REAL pike jump too – 1.5 with legs, small step

Meraz – FX – double tuck, chest up, keeps front foot down – good pop into those leaps – front lay to front full to front tuck, a tad mushiness – double pike, fine – not the biggest passes and not the most secure she can be, but showing again that she can be an option anywhere at any time.

Ortiz – BB – bhs loso series, small lean, good extension in bhs, loses her feet a little on the loso – full turn with a check – switch to beat to stag ring, a little slow between the switch and beat – cat leap side aerial and falls on the side aerial. Salutes anyway, so just going without a dismount? Couldn’t she get up and redo it?

Ohashi – FX – No, this is absolutely not Nia Dennis – DLO, a little bouncy but chest up and great height – 1.5 to half to straddle to front tuck, good individual execution, some travel – good until double pike, stagger bounce backward.

8.825 for Ortiz. The judges were like, “Couldn’t you have just dismounted so we know what to do with this routine?”

Cowles – BB – aerial to split jump – full turn, nice – loso series, large break with a bend at the hips – switch to split, short of position, also with a mummified leg, which probably has something to do with it – gainer front layout full, small step.

“Kaitlyn Anoshi” PLEASE WHAT.

Dennis – FX – double Arabian, huge bound forward and OOB – front full to front layout, fine – good height on leaps and hit positions – double tuck, slide back

Hendrickson – BB – beat jump to split jump 3/4, very pretty – loso series, secure but knees throughout – switch to split 1/4, not quite as extended on that dance series – aerial, small lean – gainer full, stuck

Hano – FX – DLO, good secure landing, chest a touch forward but well held – front full to 1/2 to running man that doesn’t really work for me as choreography because it looks like it’s supposed to be a leap – double pike, keeps front leg down, good one.

Cindric – BB – smooth loso series – side aerial, hit – split to stag ring, small check after stag ring but otherwise quite solid and well extended – gainer pike, stuckish. She has a level of confidence and precision that should take her score well above the rest of the lineup.

Tratz – FX – “Pauline Teraz” full-in, solid, chest – this is the other UCLA floor I like this year because of weird – 1.5 to front full, solid – traveling through her dance combo and not as high/extended as she can get – double tuck, very solid, chest down.

UCLA will count the Ohashi issue because of the Dennis OOB but still goes 49.225 because of the final two 9.900s.

And you get the pronunciation of Savvidou of all things?

Savvidou in exhibition – doing a one-handed floor routine because of her wrist surgery – pretty 2.5 in the air, just a bit short with a stumble, love her little layout stepout pass in the middle – good extension on leaps, very pretty – 1.5 to layout, good – round off double tuck, awesome. Um…do one-handed floor routines more often because that was literally the best floor she has ever done? She’s just a little more security on that 2.5 away from being in the lineup.

After 3: UCLA 147.775, Arizona 146.675

UCLA on track for another 197 with a hit beam. Not their strongest floor, but not a disaster by any means. I continue to be impressed by what Kramer is doing on floor this season. Really nice work. If she keeps this consistency up, it might be worth Bridgeying her.

ROTATION 4

Nguyen – BB – aerial to loso series, not wild about the speed in combination – switch to split – split jump 1/2, very solid, pretty close to 180 – front full dismount, hop forward.

Leydin – FX – front tuck through to double tuck, very secure landing – switch side to split jump full, not quite there on the split – split leap full to popa, strong – going the two pass route – double pike, secure landing. Nice.

G Glenn – BB – bhs loso, excellent extension in thiat – switch to switch combo, followed by split jump, quite well extended through all of that as well – aerial – this is quite pretty beam – sticks her gainer full, having a dismount has been a problem for her, but that one went well

Bellows – FX – double tuck, good legs together – front lay front full with a lunge – double turn, keeps it together – switch ring to wolf full, very short of position on the wolf full – double pike with a slide back and step, just does stay in bounds

Hano – BB – switch ring to check to beat jump, we’ll see if she gets combo – bhs loso series, small slide back – full turn – side aerial, hit – 1.5 with step forward/sideward.

“Felish Hano” Well call her Felish now.

Berg – FX – double pike, lands short with a lunge forward – front full to front pike, some form – rudi with some pretty ragged form, but controlled, into split jump

Kocian – BB – returning a little earlier than we expected for beam – switch to sheep to beat, small hesitation before beat – aerial to bhs series, so she is able to use her arms on a bhs, which provides a few more options for content – full turn check – side aerial and falls. This is very much a “getting back out there” set – 1.5 with a stagger step forward.

Cindric – FX – double pike, controlled step back, keeps legs together – 1.5 to layout – double tuck, some slide. Another good day for her.

Ohashi – BB – going the aerial bhs route today – switch to beat, solid – bhs loso full to slide back – going for her simple routine, fine, solid, can do in her sleep, a few things to take. Still named “Onashi.” 9.950. ……K? Where am I?

Mattson – FX – double pike, controls her step back – 1.5 to layout, good – switch side to straddle 3/4, somewhat short of 180 on straddle – double tuck, slide back

Peng – BB – three flares mount – bhs lay-pike, very solid – “I’m shampooing and then throwing away the bottle” is her choreography – double turn with a little style to cover up a small check – side aerial to layout full, excellent set. Very clean.

Schneider – FX – double pike, front lay to front full, some slide – switch side to popa, good popa, a little crooked on switch side – double tuck, very secure.

One judge goes 10 for Peng on beam, ends up 9.950. Anna Glenn in exhibition – presenting herself as another option, because UCLA has 11000 and didn’t use Dennis or Ross today. Ooooooooohh…missed her foot on her layout stepout dismount series and somehow still dismounted.

Parks doing floor exhibition. Who from UCLA did this music with the same snap at the beginning last year? Attempts front lay to front full, lands it on her back.

FINAL: UCLA 197.300, Arizona 195.750

UCLA will certainly take that as a road score and in general take that as a performance, especially without some of their top routines on a few events. A meh or two on bars, a meh or two on floor, some charitable scores here and there that took the total up to 197.300, but they also showed they have some more options this season (and more options than they know what to do with on beam).

  1. The Pac 12 Network’s Scoreboard with 9.5 SV for 9.7 routines is the comedy that I need in my life after this week.

  2. Anyone know why Alma Kuc didn’t go on bars for Cal today? She has been solid so far for them!

    1. Lol, never mind, just saw it in Spencer’s post. I must have missed them saying it on the stream.

  3. What’s up with the live scoring for Cal? They have 7 bars scores listed, none of which are exh… no way they’re at 97.5 after that god-awful bars rotation lol.

    1. It’s wrong. The live scoring sheet is counting the score of the exhibition instead of the 5 counting routines… they are not at 97.5, nor are they at 48.575 on UB.

    1. The teams are doing themselves a disservice though by doing this when rankings and postseason assignments are determined by scores.

  4. Watching the NC State meet. W&M on beam. Their #6 girl falls and the male commentator says “and the anchor has dropped.”. You could feel the disapproval daggers from the female commentator striking him in the ensuing 30 seconds of awkward silence.

  5. Did anyone else see that Pittsburgh broke 196?! I didn’t see the meet. Was judging just night and day compared to the OSU meet there last week or is this the real deal?
And I see that NC State is also headed towards the 196 mark.

    1. Didn’t watch this week’s meet but judging last week was way too tight for both teams.

  6. does anyone have a live scores link for asu/stanford? can’t seem to find one

    1. The Stanford twitter says it’s down. Follow their twitter instead for scores.

    1. Why? It hasn’t cut out at all and they’ve shown every routine. It’s not exactly ESPN caliber and nothing fancy, but definitely better than Flo and not ridiculously priced!

      1. For me it’s god awful. That might be because I live in the UK, but it won’t make it through an entire routine (even a vault!) without blacking out, or freezing up.

    2. Have you tried a VPN to the US? I had problems at the beginning as well, but will a VPN it works perfectly. (I am in Switzerland)

  7. I wonder what the thinking is behind Flam’s DLO 1/1? Surely she doesn’t need it for the bonus. Is her DLO not… more stickable?

    1. NCAA Gym New’s injury updates says she has back issues – presumably, they’re bad enough to keep her out of lineups, or else I would imagine she’d be a couple.

      1. she wasn’t even introduced with the rest of the team (the other injured girls were) and was sitting down in the side lines the whole meet.

  8. Ebee is on fire this year. It’s so nice to see her healthy and able to compete AA.

    1. Per Miss Val’s brief post-meet comments, Kyla was rested since she
had a toe sprain from the last meet.

  9. Kocian is supposed to be in the beam lineup today. I’m interested to see how she does.

  10. Risa Perez is live-tweeting the UCLA Arizona meet and her comments are incredibly rude and disrespectful to the UCLA athletes, eeek

      1. I don’t think she put anybody down. She just said she doesn’t like some of the choreography for UCLA. You can agree or disagree, but that’s not personally offensive to any of the athletes.

    1. I probably wouldn’t do it if were a volunteer asst for another program, but I give her props for honesty. Most people fan girl over UCLA and I’m glad she’s pointing out a few issues.

Also, her comments are no worse than this site and better than a lot of comments found here.

      1. Definitely nasty, unnecessary comments. Not pointing out issues… just rude. And I’m not a huge UCLA fan-love to watch all the teams

    2. I mean, it is pretty biased towards Arizona, but unless I’m missing something, she’s a former gymnast from Oregon/Arizona, and not a volunteer coach, coach or current gymnast (or commentator)? Why is it necessarily bad for her to be biased? Isn’t she just commenting as a (this sounds awkward) private citizen? Or is there something I’m missing?

      1. She’s a volunteer assistant coach at Western Michigan.

I don’t think her comments are that rude. Biased, sure, but I think the original poster made it sound worse than it is.

      2. She was at WMU last year, but I don’t think she is still there. Could be wrong tho.

    3. I mean, there’s definitely a bias, but I don’t really think you could call it particularly rude? There’s a touch more acid than is necessary, but like someone else said, definitely not as bad as you see in comments on this blog on a regular basis.

The biggest thing I’m wondering is just why she’s biased to U of A in the first place– is she bitter about her time at ASU or something?

    4. ..? I love UCLA and none of that seems rude to me at all – she has something positive to say about every competitor.

  11. Does anyone know what happened to Central Michigan’s Macey Hilliker? I didn’t see the meet, but see she posted a 1.000 on floor. Is she injured?

  12. I really feel like UCLA is not pushing the envelope at all with floor chorey this year. Most of it—Ohashi and Tratz and recycled Hano aside—is just the usual NCAA stuff. I wonder why?

    1. I’d understand if Val is tapped out as far as choreo goes, but if that’s the case I wish she’d bring in another choreographer. It’s LA — the place is lousy with creative dancers.

      1. I agree. Miss Val seems pretty tired in all respects. Understandably. Hallie Mossett does some of the choreorgraphy for UCLA. The routines she has created have been my favorite on UCLA for years. See Janay Honest’s floor this year (and the past two years, I think?)

That said, I would say the same for every team with the exception of OU. KJ is able to keep it fresh while the choreo for the rest of the teams feels tired to me. Props to Bama as well, they at least have variety and aren’t so cookie cutter.

  13. But … WHY get Savvidou to do one-armed double backs unless you actually NEED her to?

    1. I feel like it’s the same reason they do so many things, like more difficulty than they need to (in a risky way, like Peng’s on her 2016 bb for example) or using a gymnast’s routine because it’s artsy and pretty and loved (Savvidou on FX (or UB) in 2016) even if they show zero consistency. UCLA seems to go for being “UCLA” with all the reputation for showmanship and flair that this entails to a level that it hold them back. But sometimes I wonder if it matters, too? As long as they stay in the top six they still get to be “UCLA”. I have no idea if I’m making any sense, but I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I can never figure out if it’s poor judgement, or a shruggy “But it will be AMAZING if they pull it off” that informs their decisions.

  14. 197.300 seems high for that UCLA performance, especially when compared to other teams across the country.

  15. Halle had that music from Parks last year. I saw some other NCAA gymnast do it today or yesterday… but Laurie Hernandez had it first in 2015!

    1. Yes:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gox9f9lqolI

Enjoy hearing great gymnasts announced such as Onashi and of course Nia Denise, Mia Dennis, and Nina Dennis. lol

Note that some routines in the first two rotations aren’t shown as those were held simultaneously since visiting UCLA needed to shorten the meet “due to a prior engagement” ?? (i.e. tight flight out no doubt…the Bruins quickly flew back from Tucson to Los Angeles and wow are their arms tired.) 😉

      1. Seems a bit disrespectful to the Arizona fans and team as if they don’t deserve the time for a “real” meet. I can imagine the backlash if Utah cut the meet time short at UCLA because there was something “more important”. The meets are set in advance, do the classy thing and adapt. Really Rude! Arizona fans were probably looking forward to a great show. All schools need to remember “FANS COUNT” they are a big part of your pay check if nothing else. I can’t imagine that behavior from any other major team in the country never mind the PAC 12. It better have been life changing important for the Bruins.

  16. Anyone know what is up with Tai? Her scores seem to be dropping and she had a decent freshman year on 3 events. Now she’s beam only.

    1. Yeah, what’s that mean? I assume it means Bridget Sloan and her consistency, but does it mean placing her somewhere particular in the lineup?

  17. Bridgeying:

Bridgette Caquatto always went last on floor for UF, because this floor routine may score higher if it goes up 6th, not, say, second: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0MNADxwDpg (scores before her in this particular instance: 9.8, 9.9, 9.95 (Sloan), 9.925 (Baker), 9.975 (Hunter)).

Anybody watching Nebraska? I can only get scores. Seems to be a 9.75-9.825 fest.

      1. Katelyn Ohashi responded to a question about Macy in an instagram live (unless I misheard!) before the meet vs Arizona and said that Macy’s back had been bothering her… 🙁

      2. Thank you Sophie for the MT update–I don’t know why injuries are often held so secret in NCAA gymnastics. Macy Torono btw made the recent Fall honor roll, so it had been puzzling as to why she would just be held out for no apparent reason and not even travel with the team. If it is a sore back, then skipping plane trips to away meets now makes sense.
