The Pac-12 gets going today with a couple interesting clashes that didn’t make the TV cut because they’re showing “basketball” or something instead. Obviously, I’m just here for the Arizona (and Stanford) lineups.

In earlier action, GW has defeated Penn State 196.475 to 196.150. Tsang took the AA with 39.600 as scores seemed kind of normal at the beginning and then got RIL senior day on floor. Penn State counted a fall on beam, as per usual, which is what’s stopping PSU from being a top 20 school, which the other events tell you it should be.

Arizona is going with six people on every event, like party poopers. They even have six on vault because Parks will be making her season debut there.

The lack of audio is making me feel unsafe.

ROTATION 1

K Szafranski – VT – lunge back on full, OK. 9.775

Schneider – UB – good legs on Gienger, a tad close – arches cast handstand and bail but saves both of them, pulling them back – DLO, step back.

Ginn – VT – full – step back as well, a little pike in the air and some legs on the block. Similar landing to Szafranski, maybe not as much distance.

Hendrickson – UB – small arch on first hs – nice jaeger to overshoot combo – solid final cast – DLO, stuck, a little whippy

Kuhm – VT – very clean full, only a small step back – not the most distance, but good height and best shape, landing so far

Leydin – UB – toe on to Pak, solid, some leg break – pretty vertical on hs – 1/2 turn to Khorkina, nice height – giant full to double tuck, stuck. Late on giant full but one of her cleaner bars routines.

CLB – VT – gigantic full, excellent distance, pace backward

Cindric – UB – 1/2 turn to jaeger, good extension – hits bail – strong cast hs positions – 1/2 turn to double front, toes pointed throughout, small step – I appreciate her 1/2 turn finishing position. A lot of people cheat those.

Wilson – VT – good height and layout position on her full, a bounce back, which should be at least a tenth.

Spencer – UB – very nice Gienger as usual, good shape – a small hip angle on her bail – a borderline cast handstand – DLO, small hop forward, came in a little short

Rushton – VT – better tucked Yfull this week, hop back, the score they will drop as always, but better.

Berg – UB – 1/2 to piked jaeger, a little close on catch – to overshoot, some pike there – FTDT, overdid it with a hop back.

After 1: ASU 49.125, Arizona 49.000

Good rotations from both. Did what they intended to do. Scores on vault seem looser than those on bars so far. Didn’t feel like Cindric got rewarded for that bars routine. I don’t really see how that score was lower than some of the others.

ROTATION 2

Leydin – VT – solid full, lunge back, small amount of pike, similar to ASU’s opening.

Wilson -UB – good first hs – full turn to 1/2 turn to jaeger, caught, some form – bail, pikes in the air but hits vertical – full turn to double tuck, stuck with a stagger

Cowles – VT – better dynamics on her full, good height and distance, but a larger bounce back

Callis – UB – tkatchev with floppy legs but hit – loose back on bail catch but vertical – a couple short cast hs – hop forward on DLO, leaned to try to save the stick but couldn’t

Mattson – VT – Y1/2, quite strong, small hop to the side, some knees in the air

K Szafranski – UB – Ray, just caught, good – clear hip to bail, crazy leg straddle in catching bail – giant 1/1 with legggggs to a stuck double tuck.

Parks – VT – Y tuck full, her first vault of the season – bounce back. Both teams having to use a tuck to fill out the lineup.

A Szafranski – UB – toe on to toe shap, small leg break – into Pak, overall lovely, great toe point – toe 1/2 on low, a little short of vertical – can’t see cast handstands from this camera angle – DLO with a hop back.

Cindric – VT – very good stick on her full, strong distance as well, just a piked shape that will take the score down a little

Kuhm – UB – hop grip chang eto Jaeger, solid – toe on to bail, clean – toe circle step up to high bar – DLO, flung out a little but stuck. Very pretty work.

Swanson – VT – full – large bounce back but better than it has been earlier this season – some pike throughout

CLB – UB – Ray, very high, maybe a hair close on catch – good legs together on bail, great shoot to high – FTDT, holds a staggered stick. Strong routine again from her. Very nice work from the final two in this lineup.

Feel like there isn’t enough separation in the scores between the first four ASU bars routines with form issues and the final two with such strong routines.

After 2: ASU 98.150, Arizona 97.875

Arizona with six on vault but still struggling to fill out a vault lineup with a bunch of 9.7iness in that lineup (though I feel like a few Arizona vaults went 9.725 when the equivalent ASU vaults went 9.775). ASU extends its lead with some 9.7iness of its own on bars but two very strong final routines to bring the total into the 49s.

ROTATION 3

CLB – BB – straddle jump to loso, secure with leg form – full turn – beat jump to straddle 3/4, will get a 180 deduction – bhs loso, solid – she’s a secure beamer, it’s the form that takes away the score – 1.5 with hop forward

Leydin – FX – front tuck through to double tuck, cowboy but secure – back headspring because she can – switch side to split jump full, not quite there – split leap full to straddle jump – double pike, bounce back

Udowitch – BB – No, YOU da witch. (Sorry.) (Very.) (Except not.) Aerial, clean form but no connection – redoes with a check into bhs, watch to see if she gets an acro series – switch, back leg – full turn – cat leap to kickover front, an arm wave very nicely done – switch to split jump, back legs – side aerial to layout full with a slide.

Berg – FX – double pike, a little forward – switch, split jump full, wolf jump full, some 180 deductions to take – front full to front pike – rudi, fairly raggedy but secure

Kuhm – BB – bhs loso, clean form with a check – full turn – aerial to beat jump, perfect – switch to sheep jump – 2/1 with a bounce back, biggest deduction of the routine will be the full tenth for that landing.

BLESS MY STARS AUDIO.

Parks – FX – double tuck, pretty significant bounce back – popa to tuck jump 1.5, quite bouncy on landing – switch to stag something or other – wolf jump 1.5.front lay to front full, a little bouncy.

Apparently we’re supposed to tell them we can hear them. If you want to.

Wilson – BB – bhs loso series, secure, tight form – full turn – switch to tuck jump full, also secure – kickover front, deep but held – gainer full, shortish with a hop forward

Cindric – FX – double pike, secure, chest down – 1.5 to layout, pretty low/flat on layout, has to whip it around – double tuck, very solid

A Szafranski – BB – aerial to swingdown, keeps it moving – side aerial, pretty – switch to split – full turn, small check – Rulfovish, solid this time – stuck gainer full. One of her good ones. The most confident she has been in that beam routine in a few incarnations.

Mattson – FX – double pike, slide back – 1.5 to front layout, legs apart on layout, pulling it around – switch side to popa – double tuck, chest forward resulting in a small hop. NO VERTIGO!

Callis – BB – bhs bhs loso, very clean series, nice toes and knees – full turn – split to double stag, slightly awkward – front walkover to knee – side aerial to full, stuck, good positions

Schneider – FX – double pike, huge bounce back and OOB – front lay to front full, good amplitude on that pass, same for her leap combo – double tuck, also solid. Would have been a big score.

Washington and Stanford about to get started.

After 3: ASU 147.325, Arizona 146.850

ROTATION 1/ROTATION 4

Copiak – VT – Washington – nice control on her full landing, good height, some pike throughout. 9.750.

Lawson – UB – Shap to bail, legs on the bail – giant full with legs to double tuck with lunge forward. 9/700/

Riley – VT – Y1/2 – pace forward on landing, otherwise strong. 9.800.

Navarro – UB – tkatchev, fine, a little flat – short on cast hs – leg break on Pak – nice vertical on 1/2 turn on low – rushes final cast hs – FTDT with a significant bounce forward, chest too forward and legs a little locked, otherwise one of her stronger routines until that point. One of the judges had 9.650 but after a conference it’s 9.750. Got away with one there.

Roy – VT – Tsuk 1/2 – pretty large pace forward this time, some knees. 9.800.

Flam – UB – toe on 1/2, really slow in completing that 1/2 and had no chance on the jaeger, so Stanford counting the Lawson and Navarro scores. More important that Navarro got that 9.750 now. DLO 1/1 dismount with a small step.

Hoffa – VT – step back on her full, best dynamics of the lineup so far but still awkward on the landing this season.

Callis for ASU on floor had a bit of an awkward crossover step on a 2.5 – hits 1.5 to layout, some knees.

Rogers – UB – good first hs – toe on, some arch – tkatchev, flat but hit – straddled Pak – recasting on the low bar because she can’t get her 1/2 turn – tries twice to save it, ultimately comes off because it was a fall worth of deductions anyway. Stanford counting a fall on bars. Resumes, giant 1/2 with such crazy legs that she has to come off again. And just salutes. So maybe that’s why she wasn’t in the lineup before…?

Burleson – VT – comes in a little short on her full and tries to swim to hold the stick for a while but ultimately has to hop. Pikes down at the end but otherwise not troublesome in the air.

This Stanford bars rotation is taking 485 hours because the judges are like, “We;ve never seen anything like this…”

Bryant – UB – small arch in first hs but holds it – hits tkatchev, good toes if not the highest – lovely Pak – strong hs positions – giant DLO, stuck.

Roberson – VT – step back on full but better height and chest position this time, a more comfortable looking vault, just the bounce back

Price – UB – Shap to clear hip to Church to bail – very precise as always – DLO, nearly stuck. Great one. 9.900. I would have been fine with 9.950.

Goings exhibition on vault.

After 1: Washington 48.900, Stanford 48.300

Stanford the usual problems on bars. Washington not really with the landings today on vault to get a better number.

Cowles – BB – Arizona – aerial with a check – switch to split is good, some checks –

K Szafranski – FX – ASU – double pike – fine, right into double tuck, same, controlling landings – split leap 1/1 to popa, pretty distinct – 1.5 to layout, very good height and keeps her straight position in the layout well. Good set.

Ortiz – BB – Arizona – bhs loso series, solid, small slide back of front foot – full turn – switch with a check – beat jump to double stag, solid – side aerial to full. Good.

Kuhm – FX – ASU – whip to double tuck, very contained and efficient tuck shape, chest up well – front full to front tuck to stag, strong – 2.5, well controlled. Quite strong routine.

Cole – VT – Stanford – controls the full, small slide, clear pike, especially at the end.

Nelson – UB – Washington – 1/2 turn to jaeger, close catch – small arch in hs – Pak – good final cast hs – a little wonky in her giant full but works through it to stuck double tuck. OK. Not her strongest.

Cindric falls on beam for Arizona. Counting a fall there.

Navarro – VT – Stanford – also just a small landing correction on her full but doesn’t have much in the dynamics department and has a pike.

CLB – FX – ASU _ double tuck, chest up, excellent – split leap full to split jump full, bails out of that split jump and doesn’t hit the position – 1.5 to front full, strong -great final pass.

FINAL: ASU 196.725, Arizona 195.025

Flam – VT – Omelianchik with a hop in place, one of her stronger ones. 9.925.

Washington – UB – hecth mount – giant full to Gienger, good legs together – clean bail position in vertical – giant full to double tuck, stumble backward on double tuck. Keeps it to her feet but major deduction.

Bryant – VT – Stanford – bigggg full, also the small step like many of them have had but well above the rest of her teammates in height and distance.

This is my favorite NCAA school commentator.

Copiak – UB – Church to overshoot, strong – small arch in a cast hs – FTDT, takes it a little close to the bar but no trouble, step back.

Price – VT – Perfect full. Stuck. I’d call it a stick. Maybe a slide of heels together, but McMurtry got 9.950 for doing more than that yesterday. Price sometimes has a little more pike. 9.900. You can definitely justify it.

Riley – UB – Shap, some legs., strong bail – short final cast hs – DLO, usual floaty but not all the way around this time with a hop forward

Burleson – UB – 1/2 turn on high to tkatchev, it’s high but not a lot of counter – hits bail – giant 1/1 to double tuck, hop back. The giant full is so slow but she keeps it vertical much better than basically everyone.

After 2: Washington 97.950, Stanford 97.575

Washington had two struggle routines from Nelson and Washington in there to deal with. The other four were solid but didn’t get their landings and couldn’t go much higher than low 9.8s as a result in an effort to save the rotation score. Stanford among its better vault rotations, more control from those early-lineup fulls to get themselves the scores, and then the final three did their jobs.

ROTATION 3

Rose – BB – aerial to bhs series, slowish but keeps it moving – y spin through to switch to beat jump, it’s a tough connection to get credit for but done as quickly as can be done this time – delightful routine – cat leap side aerial, very strong – side aerial to tuck full, step back.

Cole – FX – 2.5 to front tuck, stuck, a little off line on that front tuck but not bad – signature straddle jump – rudi with a bounce but good twisting shape until the landing – front full to pike, secure set.

Washington – BB – bhs loso, good extension, small lean correction – side aerial, hit – switch side – straddle jump straddle jump in side position, it’s a compromise dance element combo but I actually like it better, it’s not strictly connected the way I’d like connections to be, but I can live with it. Front full with step forward.

H Hoffman – FX – front tuck through to rudi, raggedy legs but secure – switch ring to split leap 1/1 – double tuck with a couple stagger steps, obviously the mat’s fault – rudi to double stag, a little bouncy.

Copiak – BB – full turn – bhs loso, check, a little stiff on landing – switch 1/2 to beat jump – “not quite 180 on that switch 1/2”, MARRY ME – side aerial, OK – 1.5, stuck.

Lawson – FX – switch to split leap 1.5, almost all the way around, probably gets credit for it – 1.5 through to double tuck, secure – random front tuck and hopping out of it, the scourge of NCAA this season – Tabitha is INTO THIS – double pike, good. She’s getting there.

Goings – BB – bhs bhs loso series, good – she lands with legs very far apart so that she can hold those landings without as much of a check as others would have  – strong straddle 1/4 – gainer loso, strong – side aerial to full, college salutes herself into a hop.

Flam – FX – double Arabian, falls – took it too far and landed so far OOB that she was almost off the floor and never had a chance to land it securely – switch side to popa, good 180, a little indistinct – switch 1/2 – double pike was fine

Roberson – BB – switch to straddle 1/4, good position on that switch – full turn – standing loso loso series, good rhythm and secure – stuck gainer full. Good. This is the best rotation for Washington so far today.

Bryant – FX – very strong DLO, chest well up – front tuck through to double pike, only issue on these passes is finishing too early and bouncing back – open double tuck, no trouble. Good routine.

Burleson – BB – aerial to bhs, a little slow in combination but kept moving enough to get it, small check – side aerial through to switch leap like a Wevers – straddle to straddle 1/4 – side aerial to full, stuck.

Price – FX – So we missed the DLO. Front tuck through to double tuck, steps back and has to swim to try to keep herself in bounds – switch side to popa – double pike, short with a lunge forward. Weird one from her. Not her strongest on either of the final two passes.

Nelson exhibition on beam, an option, but maybe not the leaps to get back in this season.

After 3: Washington 147.375, Stanford 146.700

Stanford needed the score from Price to really get a total there on floor, but five reasonable routines nonetheless. Washington quite strong and precise on beam to get back onto the solid 196 track.

ROTATION 4

Cole – BB – bhs loso, secure – switch to stag ring, nice – aerial to beat – she has become smoother and more comfortable as a beam as time has passed – check on full turn – 2/1, bends at the hips to hold the stick.

It’s a 49.175 for Nebraska on vault against Pitt.

Nelson – FX – double tuck, chest up, solid – front lay front full – switch ring to split leap full, OK – double pike, good control on all her passes.

N Hoffman – BB – aerial to beat jump, arm wave to work through it – bhs loso, secure with knees – wobble on nothing – switch to split – side aerial to full with slide back

Roberson – FX – front 2/1 with a pretty significant bound forward out of it this time – rudi loso is strong, good amplitude – switch ring to wolf jump 1/1 aren’t quite there – double tuck, stumble back and OOB. Rough one.

Flam – BB – bhs to layout two feet, bhs form is crazy but a secure landing – punch front, good =- cat leap to switch side with an arm wave – front 1/1, hop forward

Schaefer – FX – Ohhhhh, you were doing so well at this commentary! It’s Maggie Nichols, and she wasn’t national AA champion. Anyway, this routine. Double pike, chest up, a little slide – front full to layout to stag, good – switch ring to split leap full, good – double tuck, short with a lunge forward.

Price – BB – aerial, solid – bhs to layout, secure, knees in bhs – full turn – switch to split, OK – double pike, small step. Good set. Already counting a 9.7, so they needed it. Split of 9.900 and 9.750 for this one. OK.

Hoffa – FX – double pike, keeps that front foot down it appeared – front lay to front full with dance out – split leap full to wolf jump full, medium – double tuck, pretty short with a lunge forward.

Bryant – BB – huge bhs loso series – beat jump to switch split jump, excellent – huge break on front tuck, large bend and bounce, stays on somehow – double tuck with a lunge back. Another trouble score.

Washington – FX – double tuck, fine – switch side to popa – front lay to front full, a little stagger on that landing but not bad – double pike, more secure, better landing on last pass than the previous couple.

Navarro – BB – bhs loso, great toe point but a check – full turn – aerial, smallest little lean – switch to split jump, good – double tuck, lunge back

Burleson – FX – double pike, solid – 1.5 through to 2/1, also secure, switch ring to wolf hop full (I feel like a LOT of people do wolf hop fulls and don’t get them around and no one cares) 2.5 final pass, lunge back to save it.

FINAL: Washington 196.475, Stanford 195.450

Not an ideal meet for either. Washington will take it, but for Stanford, this result means a 195.650 will not able to be dropped for RQS, which is the kind of score that will be fine for making regionals, but not much more than just making regionals.

  1. Ha, I’m glad the lack of audio isn’t just me. It’s weird to watch a meet without sound. I’m used to hearing people shout “10” after every routine. The silence is creeping me out.

  2. In addition to the lack of sound, I’m enjoying the fact that we can see basically a third of each bars gymnast while she’s on the high bar.

  3. I believe they are working on the sound? Al least I get some sporadic cracking sound…

  4. LOL WAIT have they been commenting into the void this entire meet? Did no one notice the sound wasn’t working?

    1. Agreed. Clearly knowledgeable & not overtly cheering for one team. And she doesn’t sound like she’s watching paint dry

  5. ebee is being underscored….like where did you find .975 in deductions in that yfull???? where please tell me

    1. Wait what? She got .05 in deductions. If I where to hazard a guess, I’d point to the teeny tiny slide of the feet, although that’s obvi being picky.

      1. my bad, my math is waaaaaaay off and i guess so is my knowledge of start values *runs away forever* i still stand by my statement in general despite that, though – pretty excellent yfull even with the baby slide of her feet.

    2. Um they didn’t? She got a 9.9. 9.95 start value with 0.05 off for the shuffle on landing. Seems fine?

    1. Seriously! Give her all the commentating jobs, preferably starting yesterday. She had me at semi-ironically quoting Tim Daggett & scolding the production crew for missing Price’s magical DLO.

  6. Sames on the WA commentator. You gotta tell us your name tho woman!
Honestly, I even loved that she blanked on Maggie Nichols b/c my brain glitches like that all the time.
