Here’s your weekly look at the current RQS picture and what RQS/ranking teams can reach based on scores from their next meets.
For reference, these were the RQSs required last season for a series of benchmarks if you’re feverishly watching what a certain team might need:
Advance to regionals – 195.420 RQS
Seeded #3 at regionals – 196.380 RQS
Seeded #2 at regionals – 196.845 RQS
Seeded #1 at regionals – 197.355 RQS
Scores in bold will be part of the six scores used for final RQS and can no longer be removed.
1. Oklahoma – 197.855 |
|
Road Score 1: | 198.125 |
Road Score 2: | 198.050 |
Road Score 3: | 197.550 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 198.150 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 198.025 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 197.525 |
RQS: | 197.855 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.980
With four scores of 198 recorded this season, Oklahoma is sitting pretty, having already cinched the #1 ranking for next Monday because no other team can catch OU’s current RQS of 197.855, even if they all score a billion. Once again this year, Oklahoma looks like it is competing against itself in the ranking race.
2. UCLA – 197.610 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.750 |
Road Score 2: | 197.625 |
Road Score 3: | 197.300 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 198.025 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.950 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 197.425 |
RQS: | 197.610 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.755
UCLA can’t catch Oklahoma this week, so the goal will be to maintain this #2 ranking, though it will be a close fight with LSU. UCLA has the higher maximum RQS after this week and can therefore guarantee staying ahead of LSU regardless of what LSU scores with a 197.925. There is a very, very outside chance that Florida could catch UCLA this week as well, but it would take more than a 198 from Florida a weak meet from UCLA. The Bruins can remove any chance of being caught by Florida with a 197.350.
3. LSU – 197.545 |
|
Road Score 1: | 198.075 |
Road Score 2: | 197.575 |
Road Score 3: | 197.375 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 198.175 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.450 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 197.250 |
RQS: | 197.545 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.730
The #2 ranking is in UCLA’s hands this week since the Bruins have the higher possible RQS, but LSU is in with a good shot. It would take at least 197.575 for LSU to have any chance at UCLA, so that’s the minimum score to watch when the two teams compete simultaneously on Sunday. LSU is also potentially at risk of being passed by Florida if the Gators have a big day, but LSU can ensure staying ahead of Florida with a 197.625 this weekend.
4. Utah – 197.415 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.550 |
Road Score 2: | 197.550 |
Road Score 3: | 197.450 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.700 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.450 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 197.075 |
RQS: | 197.415 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.540
Utah does not compete this weekend, so that maximum possible RQS is what will be attainable the following weekend. For this week, Utah will have to hope its 197.415 holds up against a potential Florida challenge.
5. Florida – 197.250 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.400 |
Road Score 2: | 196.950 |
Road Score 3: | 196.325 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 198.150 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.850 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 197.725 |
RQS: | 197.250 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.615
It’s a huge weekend for Florida on the road against Missouri. With two road meets remaining and two 196 road scores to drop, the Gators need a big meet and could move up pretty dramatically if things fall just right (or could be stuck counting a 196 if things don’t).
The most attainable goal will be passing Utah. Since Utah doesn’t compete this week, Florida will be guaranteed to pass Utah by scoring 197.175. LSU and UCLA will be much tougher, but Florida would be in the game to pass LSU with a 197.825 and UCLA with a 198.150 if either of those teams do have a bad one.
6. Alabama – 196.850 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.300 |
Road Score 2: | 197.075 |
Road Score 3: | 196.725 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.000 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.925 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.525 |
RQS: | 196.850 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.005
Alabama and Michigan are currently locked in a entirely meaningless clash to see who is 6th and who is 7th—at least for the moment, until someone else disrupts the party. Both teams are looking to get rid of 196.525s this week and have identical maximum RQSs, so it’ll be a good old-fashioned, simple race to see who scores better this weekend and gets to be #6.
7. Michigan – 196.800 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.775 |
Road Score 2: | 196.575 |
Road Score 3: | 196.525 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.550 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.250 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.875 |
RQS: | 196.800 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.005
8. Oregon State – 196.605 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.525 |
Road Score 2: | 196.500 |
Road Score 3: | 196.300 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.300 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.975 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.725 |
RQS: | 196.605 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.720
Oregon State does not compete until Monday night and will therefore not change its RQS of 196.605 in next week’s rankings, so getting passed by a few teams for the time being seems likely.
If you were to include that Monday meet in running rankings, Oregon State could not move higher than 8th anyway but would be able to ensure staying ahead of Washington with a 197.075, ahead of Arkansas with a 197.025, and ahead of Auburn with a 196.800.
9. Kentucky – 196.560 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.950 |
Road Score 2: | 196.700 |
Road Score 3: | 196.700 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.100 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.375 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.075 |
RQS: | 196.560 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.765
Kentucky has an opportunity to drop that 196.075 this week and therefore controls its own ranking destiny a little bit more than the other teams in this ranking section. It will take just 196.325 to move ahead of the temporarily idle Oregon State, and 196.900 to guarantee staying ahead of Oregon State even after OSU’s Monday meet.
The other mission will be fending off Washington, Arkansas, Auburn, and Arizona State, requiring a 196.650 to guarantee staying ahead of Washington, a 196.700 to guarantee staying ahead of Arkansas, a 196.375 to guarantee staying ahead of Auburn, and a 196.125 to guarantee staying ahead of Arizona State.
10. Arkansas – 196.530 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.875 |
Road Score 2: | 196.350 |
Road Score 3: | 196.150 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.175 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.750 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.525 |
RQS: | 196.530 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.660
Arkansas could also go as high as 8th after this weekend if things play out correctly, but with the lowest maximum RQS of the teams ranked 8-11, Arkansas will be subject to their performances more than anything else. Arkansas does find itself slightly vulnerable to Auburn, Arizona State, and Georgia, needing a 196.975 to ensure staying ahead of Auburn, a 196.725 to ensure staying ahead of Arizona State, and a 196.625 to stay ahead of Georgia.
11. Washington – 196.515 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.025 |
Road Score 2: | 196.525 |
Road Score 3: | 196.250 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.000 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.475 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.325 |
RQS: | 196.515 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.670
Similar is true for Washington, with the potential to go up to 8th but needing some help to do it. Washington can, however, guarantee moving ahead of Arkansas with a 197.000. Washington is also looking for a 196.775 to ensure staying ahead of Auburn, a 196.525 to ensure staying ahead of Arizona State, and a 196.425 to ensure staying ahead of Georgia.
12. Denver – 196.360 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.575 |
Road Score 2: | 195.975 |
Road Score 3: | 195.775 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 196.800 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.750 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.725 |
RQS: | 196.360 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.375
Denver also doesn’t compete until Monday—and won’t have that meet included in the next rankings—but would be in trouble regardless. Competing at home and with three very similar home scores already, Denver can basically do nothing in the rankings except hope to hold on and then make a move at the remaining three road meets. Denver could be passed by Arizona State, Boise State, Auburn, Nebraska, and Georgia, even taking Monday’s score into account.
13. Arizona State – 195.285 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.475 |
Road Score 2: | 196.250 |
Road Score 3: | 195.400 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 196.800 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.725 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.575 |
RQS: | 196.285 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.565
Arizona State has another big opportunity to make a ranking move this weekend with a 195.400 road score still left to be dropped. It’s mathematically possible for ASU to go as high as 9th after this week, though it’s not a likely outcome. Moving ahead of Denver is much more realistic and within ASU’s own control, requiring just a 195.875 to get it done.
Arizona State is, however, somewhat vulnerable to getting passed by Auburn since Auburn has the higher maximum RQS after this week, and by several other teams based on how things go. Auburn can avoid being passed by Georgia with a 196.725, by Boise State with a 196.300, and by Cal with a 195.750.
14. Boise State – 196.255 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.625 |
Road Score 2: | 196.400 |
Road Score 3: | 196.175 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 196.875 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.225 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 195.850 |
RQS: | 196.255 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.460
Boise State has a lower maximum than Auburn and Georgia this week and is vulnerable to being passed by both. At the same time, BSU could move ahead of Denver with a 196.475 and stay ahead of Cal with a 196.350.
15. Auburn – 196.190 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.500 |
Road Score 2: | 196.375 |
Road Score 3: | 194.875 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.000 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.625 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.575 |
RQS: | 196.190 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.615
This is the big week for Auburn. With that 194 road score able to be dropped, Auburn has the potential to go as high as 8th, though that’s not actually going to happen. Still, passing Denver, Boise State, and Arizona State is very much attainable. It will take 195.825 to pass Denver, 196.250 to pass Boise State, and 196.775 to pass Arizona State.
To avoid being caught by the teams ranked below, Auburn needs 196.675 to stay ahead of Georgia, 195.700 to stay ahead of Cal, and 195.150 to stay ahead of Missouri.
16. Nebraska – 196.135 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.175 |
Road Score 2: | 195.675 |
Road Score 3: | 195.550 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 196.875 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.850 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.425 |
RQS: | 196.135 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.400
It’s a two-meet weekend for Nebraska, so we won’t know anything about Nebraska’s chances until we see that Friday score. Possibilities are modest after the first meet, with an outside chance to move as high as 12th, but if both of the weekend scores are high, Nebraska could do quite a bit of damage. Keep that in mind when evaluating the possible placements of the teams ranked above.
17. Georgia – 196.050 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.150 |
Road Score 2: | 196.125 |
Road Score 3: | 194.525 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.000 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.725 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.725 |
RQS: | 196.050 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.545
It’s critical away-meet weekend for Georgia at the Elevate the Stage competition with a 194.525 road score still hanging around to get rid of. That means Georgia could move up quite a lot this week with a big result, theoretically even as high as 10th. The prey most within Georgia’s control will be Denver and Boise State, requiring a 196.600 to move ahead of Boise State and a 196.175 to move ahead of Denver. Georgia needs this one because counting 196.1 road scores is not good for a team that wants a seeding.
18. Cal – 196.040 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.700 |
Road Score 2: | 195.475 |
Road Score 3: | 194.850 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.500 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.225 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 195.950 |
RQS: | 196.040 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.350
Cal competes at home for the last time in 2018 this weekend and will therefore have to wait another week to get rid of that 194 road score. That high-195 is still a worthy candidate to be dropped, so Cal should increase its RQS and could in theory move up as high as 13th, though with a lower peak RQS than any of the top 17, it will take help from other teams having a badsie.
Fending off Missouri, George Washington, Ohio State, and BYU will also be a project, requiring a 196.975 to guarantee staying ahead of Missouri, 196.550 for George Washington, 196.450 for Ohio State. and 196.400 for BYU.
19. George Washington – 195.965 | |

are the Regional locations predetermined, and, if not, how are they decided?
The regional locations are decided significantly in advance. This year, they will be held at Utah, Alabama, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Penn State, and Minnesota. Who goes where amongst these locations is a combination of rankings and geographic locations, but those six locations are set as the 2018 regionals sites.
That’s what I thought but I couldn’t find the information. Thank you very much!
How does the D3 system work in terms of qualifying for individual event finals at nationals? I heard that some people already know they made it and their regionals haven’t happened yet. How can that be?
