RQS Update – Week 9

Here’s your weekly look at the current RQS picture and what RQS each team can reach based on scores from the weekend’s upcoming meets.

But first, this is what the regionals draw would look like if the season ended at this moment, using the in-progress RQS rankings from Tuesday, March 6th.

Regional A: 1. Oklahoma, 12. Arizona State, 13. Nebraska
Regional B: 2. LSU, 11. Oregon State, 14. Boise State
Regional C: 3. UCLA, 10. Arkansas, 15. Denver
Regional D: 4. Utah (host), 9. Washington, 16. Auburn
Regional E: 5. Florida, 8. Kentucky, 17. BYU
Regional F: 6. Alabama (host), 7. Michigan, 18. Georgia

Regional F, you guys.

Auburn and BYU are currently tied for 16th, but Auburn would win the tiebreaker right now (next highest score that isn’t being used for RQS).

The other hosts are Minnesota, Ohio State, NC State, and Penn State, so we shouldn’t end up with a host-pairing conflict this season. Unseeded hosts are assigned to a regional giving geographical precedence to the top seed in that regional. So, you know, try to assign Oklahoma, LSU, UCLA, and Florida to those four host locations using geographical arguments. Good luck.

The rest of the 19-36 teams are also placed geographically, but I tend not to prognosticate on how that would even go because the rules for geographic placement are intentionally ambiguous nonsense. Like: “Teams 19-36 will be placed geographically at one of the six regional sites, while at the same time trying to avoid, when possible, pairing multiple in-region teams and pairing conference rematches of the teams.” So, you place them geographically, just as long as they’re not placed with any of the teams that they’re actually near. Got it. No wonder all NCAA coaches go cuckoo-pants after 5 years.

Now, onto the RQSs. Scores in bold will be part of the six scores used for final RQS and can no longer be removed.

1. Oklahoma – 197.980
Road Score 1: 198.125
Road Score 2: 198.050
Road Score 3: 197.550
Home/Road Score 1: 198.375
Home/Road Score 2: 198.150
Home/Road Score 3: 198.025
RQS: 197.980

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 198.050

Oklahoma has used all of these 198s to open up a pretty sizable lead over the rest of the country. This coming weekend at home, there’s not too, too much OU can do in RQS because of having three home 198s already, but the following weekend on the road, Oklahoma will have a very juicy opportunity to drop that 197.550 and will have its sights set on breaking the all-time RQS record (198.055). That’s looking increasingly inevitable.

2. LSU – 197.715
Road Score 1: 198.075
Road Score 2: 197.575
Road Score 3: 197.375
Home/Road Score 1: 198.175
Home/Road Score 2: 198.100
Home/Road Score 3: 197.450
RQS: 197.715

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.875

With a higher possible maximum RQS than UCLA after this weekend’s meets, LSU will be in the driver’s seat in terms of determining which team is #2 in next Monday’s rankings (though keep in mind that UCLA has a meet next Tuesday as well, so things may change again at that point). LSU will be looking to score 197.675 away at NC State on Friday to guarantee staying ahead of the Bruins on Monday’s rankings regardless of what UCLA does on Sunday.

3. UCLA – 197.650
Road Score 1: 197.750
Road Score 2: 197.625
Road Score 3: 197.500
Home/Road Score 1: 198.025
Home/Road Score 2: 197.950
Home/Road Score 3: 197.425
RQS: 197.650

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.770

UCLA will have a chance to move up on LSU after Sunday’s meet at Stanford, but it would require at least 197.775 and will also be dependent on what LSU does on Friday, so that number is likely to change.

4. Utah – 197.415
Road Score 1: 197.550
Road Score 2: 197.550
Road Score 3: 197.450
Home/Road Score 1: 197.700
Home/Road Score 2: 197.450
Home/Road Score 3: 197.075
RQS: 197.415

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.540

Utah withstood not competing last weekend and stayed 4th, and is already guaranteed to stay 4th in next Monday’s rankings regardless of what anyone does this weekend. Right now, Utah’s scores are about positioning itself to have a chance to catch UCLA with a better performance at Pac-12s.

5. Florida – 197.325
Road Score 1: 197.400
Road Score 2: 196.950
Road Score 3: 196.700
Home/Road Score 1: 198.150
Home/Road Score 2: 197.850
Home/Road Score 3: 197.725
RQS: 197.325

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.410

Florida is at home this weekend, and with three fairly tightly bunched home scores already, there’s not a lot the Gators can do to change the rankings. As in nothing. They’re going to be 5th after this weekend regardless. Florida will still have a chance to move up given a big result at SECs, but with a 196 road score already counting, it’s going to be tough.

6. Alabama – 197.005
Road Score 1: 197.300
Road Score 2: 197.075
Road Score 3: 196.725
Home/Road Score 1: 197.525
Home/Road Score 2: 197.000
Home/Road Score 3: 196.925
RQS: 197.005

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.165

Alabama has opened up a little margin ahead of Michigan and will be able to determine who is 6th and who is 7th after this week, needing a
197.050 to guarantee keeping hold of 6th and the symbolic #1-regional-seed honor for the moment.

7. Michigan – 196.930
Road Score 1: 197.175
Road Score 2: 196.775
Road Score 3: 196.575
Home/Road Score 1: 197.550
Home/Road Score 2: 197.250
Home/Road Score 3: 196.875
RQS: 196.930

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.065

Michigan competes in its home finale this weekend so cannot yet drop that 196.5 road score, stunting its peak RQS somewhat. It would take a minimum of 197.275 to have a shot at Alabama, but that will be dependent on what Alabama scores. Neither Michigan nor Alabama will be ranked any lower than 7th come Monday.

8. Kentucky – 196.715
Road Score 1: 196.950
Road Score 2: 196.700
Road Score 3: 196.700
Home/Road Score 1: 197.100
Home/Road Score 2: 196.850
Home/Road Score 3: 196.375
RQS: 196.715

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.860

Kentucky’s goal for this week (and probably for the rest of the season) will be to hold onto this #8 ranking in the face of challenges from a very tightly packed group right below. The virtue of the 8th or 9th spot is that it theoretically will produce a softer regional challenge, where you have to beat a low-196 team to make nationals, rather than beating a high-196 team. We’ll see how that plays out this season, but it’s not an insignificant aim.

Arkansas has the higher peak RQS this week, so Kentucky could fall in the rankings regardless of its performance (if Arkansas has another big one), but Kentucky can ensure staying ahead of a few teams by reaching the following numbers this weekend:

Washington196.925
Nebraska196.550
Oregon State196.425

9. Washington – 196.670
Road Score 1: 197.075
Road Score 2: 197.025
Road Score 3: 196.525
Home/Road Score 1: 197.000
Home/Road Score 2: 196.475
Home/Road Score 3: 196.325
RQS: 196.670

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.820

Washington has a lower possible RQS than either Arkansas or Kentucky so will be subject to those team’s performances this weekend and could drop out of the top 10 if those teams do well. Washington is also in potential danger from Cal, Nebraska, Oregon State, and Denver. Washington needs 196.725 to guarantee staying ahead of Nebraska, 196.600 for Oregon State, and 196.400 for Denver.

10. Arkansas – 196.660
Road Score 1: 196.875
Road Score 2: 196.350
Road Score 3: 196.150
Home/Road Score 1: 197.275
Home/Road Score 2: 197.175
Home/Road Score 3: 196.750
RQS: 196.660

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.885

Arkansas has an opportunity to drop that 196.150 and could ensure moving as high as 8th in the rankings by recording a 197.175 this weekend regardless of what any other team does. Moving up to 9th requires a little bit less, 196.975, but would still be a challenge if Kentucky and Washington get big scores this week.

11. Oregon State – 196.655
Road Score 1: 196.525
Road Score 2: 196.500
Road Score 3: 196.300
Home/Road Score 1: 197.300
Home/Road Score 2: 196.975
Home/Road Score 3: 196.975
RQS: 196.655

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.720

Oregon State finishes out its home schedule this weekend, and with three already tightly packed home scores, won’t have as much room to improve as these other teams. There’s an outside chance OSU can go back to 8th with a season high, but that would require help from the three teams ranked above. Oregon State also has a lower maximum this week than Cal or Nebraska, so will face challenges from below.

One race totally in OSU’s control is staying ahead of Denver, which would be clinched with a 197.125. It’s removing the road scores in later weeks that will provide Oregon State with its real chance to move up.

12. Arizona State – 195.510
Road Score 1: 196.525
Road Score 2: 196.475
Road Score 3: 196.250
Home/Road Score 1: 196.800
Home/Road Score 2: 196.725
Home/Road Score 3: 196.575
RQS: 196.510

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.620

Arizona State has accomplished its mission of having six 196 scores to use for RQS, but now with six relatively similar numbers, can’t increase its RQS all that much more this week. ASU cannot move up higher than 12th and will be in danger of being caught by Cal, Nebraska, and Denver, all with higher peaks after this week as well.

ASU will also be looking to stay ahead of Auburn, which would be guaranteed by matching a season high of 196.800, and ahead of Boise State, which would be ensured with a 196.575.

13. Nebraska – 196.455
Road Score 1: 196.700
Road Score 2: 196.175
Road Score 3: 195.675
Home/Road Score 1: 197.125
Home/Road Score 2: 196.875
Home/Road Score 3: 196.850
RQS: 196.455

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.745

Nebraska has an opportunity to dismiss that 195 road score this week and therefore will have an outside shot of moving as high as 8th. Moving into the top 10 is not the most likely occurrence this week, but with a 197.025Nebraska would clinch a gain of at least one spot to move into the top 12, which seems somewhat doable.

Cal has a shot to move ahead of Nebraska (and two meets in which to do it), but otherwise Nebraska can fend off anyone else ranked below with a 196.825.

14. Boise State – 196.430
Road Score 1: 196.625
Road Score 2: 196.400
Road Score 3: 196.175
Home/Road Score 1: 196.875
Home/Road Score 2: 196.725
Home/Road Score 3: 196.225
RQS: 196.430

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.570

Boise State could move as high as #12 after this week if things fall correctly, but with a peak RQS of 196.570, can also be caught by five other teams ranked below if things fall very incorrectly. Some of that is out of BSU’s control, but what’s in Boise State’s control would be staying ahead of George Washington and Missouri, which requires a very attainable 196.350.

15. Denver – 196.375
Road Score 1: 196.575
Road Score 2: 195.975
Road Score 3: 195.775
Home/Road Score 1: 197.300
Home/Road Score 2: 196.800
Home/Road Score 3: 196.750
RQS: 196.375

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.680

Now that the home scores are taken care of, Denver has the opportunity (terror?) of moving on to addressing those road 195s, with the mission of catching a few teams that it has recently fallen behind. Denver could guarantee moving back ahead of Arizona State with a 197.025 and ahead of Boise State with a 196.775.

The other quest will be to stay ahead of Auburn, George Washington, Missouri, and BYU, all of which will be fended off which a 197.000.

16. Auburn – 196.340
Road Score 1: 196.500
Road Score 2: 196.375
Road Score 3: 195.625
Home/Road Score 1: 197.000
Home/Road Score 2: 196.625
Home/Road Score 3: 196.575
RQS: 196.340

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.615

Because the good keeps not happening, Auburn still has that 195 to get rid of but will have another chance to do it this week. Like many of the other teams in this section, going as high as 12th is possible for Auburn but falling quite a bit is also possible.

What we know: Auburn can guarantee moving ahead of Boise State with a 196.800 and can fend off everyone ranked below (except Cal) with a 196.250. Otherwise, things get kind of dicey.

16. BYU – 196.340
Road Score 1: 196.450
Road Score 2: 196.375
Road Score 3: 196.200
Home/Road Score 1: 196.625
Home/Road Score 2: 196.450
Home/Road Score 3: 196.225
RQS: 196.340

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.420

BYU used its Monday 196 to move up into a tie with Auburn in the in-progress rankings. But now with six very similar scores, BYU has hit a relative ceiling in the rankings. Cal, GW, and Missouri all have higher peaks and the opportunity to pass, but BYU can make sure it stays ahead of Georgia with a 196.375.

18. Georgia – 196.310
Road Score 1: 196.150
Road Score 2: 196.125
Road Score 3: 195.825
Home/Road Score 1: 197.000
Home/Road Score 2: 196.725
Home/Road Score 3: 196.725
RQS: 196.310

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.365

Georgia hosts Boise State this weekend and therefore will have no opportunity to drop those bad road scores, meaning the ceiling is low this week and Georgia is in danger of dropping well down if some of the teams ranked below get big results. It’s quite a realistic possibility that Georgia will find itself outside the top 18 come Monday.

19. George Washington – 196.285
Road Score 1: 196.475
Road Score 2: 196.300
Road Score 3: 196.175
Home/Road Score 1: 196.825
Home/Road Score 2: 196.525
Home/Road Score 3: 195.950
RQS: 196.285

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.460

George Washington has some possible opportunities to gain ground this week, able to go ahead of BYU (and therefore Georgia) with a 196.650. That’s the score GW needs to guarantee being top 18 on Monday.

20. Missouri – 196.240
Road Score 1: 196.625
Road Score 2: 196.025
Road Score 3: 195.850
Home/Road Score 1: 196.925
Home/Road Score 2: 196.375
Home/Road Score 3: 196.325
RQS: 196.240

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.455

Missouri has similar opportunities and can move ahead of BYU and Georgia with a 196.750, though Missouri is not as likely to go into the top 18 on Monday because Cal looks poised to pass.

21. Cal – 196.235
Road Score 1: 196.700
Road Score 2: 195.475
Road Score 3: 194.850
Home/Road Score 1: 197.500
Home/Road Score 2: 197.225
Home/Road Score 3: 196.925
RQS: 196.235

Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.765

Cal competes twice this weekend, so we won’t know what can happen in the second meet until after the first, but there are plenty of possibilities for movement even after the first meet. That 194 is aching to be dropped.

Some benchmarks to watch: moving into the top 12 (the #2 seed territory) can be clinched with a 197.275 in the first meet, moving into the top 15 can be clinched with a 196.775 in the first meet, and moving into the top 18 (the #3 seed territory) can be clinch with a 195.975 in the first meet. And after that, we’ll see what can happen in the second meet.

22. Minnesota – 196.010
Road Score 1: 196.375

Note: NC State competes twice this weekend, the second time away with a chance to drop that 194.

  1. I guess you could say Oklahoma goes to Minnesota, then Florida and NC State are kinda close, then LSU is closer to Ohio State, which leaves UCLA and Penn State. Yep. Geography.

    1. Or UCLA goes to Minnesota since it’s the “closest” to California.

Florida to NC State is the only one that actually makes sense. It might be easier to just put the other “hosts” in a hat and have the first-seed coaches draw out where they’ll go.

  2. As of Sunday am, we have a 3-way race for 8th in the rankings: UW, UK, or Cal. A 196.6 for Cal today would tie UW’s new RQS of 196.82; UK’s max possible is 196.86 (Cal’s is 197.0) & they need 196.925 to catch UW.

    1. Currently: UW 8th, UK 9th, Cal tied for 13th with Auburn. A 196.0 would put Cal into 10th, as Nebraska, Arkansas, Oregon State, & Auburn are done for the week & no one else is in striking distance.

      1. UK now at 196.795 – not quite enough to catch UW but extends their lead above the next group packed around 196.655-196.6 & 196.595. All their scores are very tightly packed now, though, so not much room to move.
