Best Routine of Week 9 Poll

Your instructions
1. Vote for the best routine
2. Don’t get upset when this inevitably devolves into a twitter popularity contest. It’s not that important.

Criteria
1. Only routines scoring 9.950+ will be included in the poll
2. There must be video available of that routine so that the voters can, you know, watch it.
3. Each gymnast may appear only once per week. The higher score (or my discretion in the event of a tie) is used.

  1. I can’t choose this week! Floor routines 10 and 11 are wonderful, and I love the beam routines and Houchin’s vault is AMAZING. It’s between the floor routines for me. Really glad routines from other schools got up there this week. Martucci and Hebert 😍😍😍

  2. I absolutely love Hambrick and Vega’s routines, but I voted for Finnegan this week. Her form gets me every time. Although, Vega’s performance quality is AMAZING.

This is a really great year for floor across NCAA.

  3. This is probably a crappy reason, but I gotta go with Taylor Houchin because I saw it in person and it was awesome.

  4. I’m sorry but I’ve waited too long for Finney to get a 10. It has to be her.

  5. I went with Finney because of course but I gotta say, Taylor Houchin’s vault was far better than Nichols who got a 10

  6. Happy to see gymnasts from ‘smaller’ schools on the list!

Hambrick’s a wonderful gymnast but her pike down on the DLO will bother me forever. She just should not get a perfect score with such a visible error. And it’s not a style thing: if you are piking down like that, you are not doing the skill correctly.

Agreed with this person. LSU is actually my favorite SEC team, but neither of those floors deserves a 10. Let’s be real.

    1. You don’t think Finney deserved a 10? Where’s your deduction, because that has to be the most perfect 10 in my eyes that we have seen this year. Her form, technique, and landings were superb.

      1. Finnegan is a lovely gymnast with gorgeous technique. She really does stand out in her presentation and clean lines, I totally agree.

The deduction is on the first pass when she lands the 2.5. She does not show complete control of that landing, stepping forward after the landing. I think her step back is controlled, so I don’t deduct that. And in my mind, a tumbling pass that ends with a step forward and a step backward isn’t a 10.0 tumbling pass.

I’ve seen plenty of 2.5s and I’ve seen that skill more well-controlled than in this video, so to me it isn’t a 10. It’s still a great routine and I’d love it in my team’s lineup, but I don’t think it deserved a 10. And the fact that Myia got a 10 at the same meet with her routine makes me think that it was just one of those nights where several routines get a bump in scoring they might not otherwise get.

No hate on Finnegan. I would have scored it 9.95 🙂

  8. I don’t mind Hambrick’s double layout position. I watched it in 0.25 slow motion and to me it looks like she is in a hollow-body position, like you would be in for a single layout. Admittedly hers is quite different from others, being not arched, but I don’t see whats wrong with a double layout in hollow-body position? Afterall, she lands chest completely vertical (upright), showing she is not ‘piking’ down.

    1. If you freeze the frame at any point in the second layout, Hambrick is very clearly in an open pike position and not fully laid out. I’m not an NCAA judge, so you don’t have to believe me on this, but I’m also not alone in finding her DLO unacceptably piked down. There is a collection of screenshots floating around that shows how her DLO has deteriorated over her past four years at LSU – while she now has excellent control of the landing, she’s done so at the expense of the actual skill.
