National Team Rankings – July 2018

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated on the first of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. The current rankings include only scores from January 2018–June 2018.

Joining the rankings this month were Poland, Latvia, and Thailand. No nations dropped off.

The US didn’t compete in June—save for the Brestyan’s elite qualifier that did not change produce any scores high enough to change anything—so all remains steady versus last month. The only surprise is that Russia wasn’t able to use the historically drug-addled scores from Russian Cup to move back into first.

Russia got a few good numbers from Russian Cup but not as many as we would typically expect from that competition, one that did little to clarify the uncertainty around the edges of the Euros team. This five could be the team, but this team would rely heavily on Simakova’s vault, which was troubling at Russian Cup, as well as on Zubova hitting beam. Kharenkova remains an option, but her performance at RC event finals would warrant a return to Valentina’s Gymnastics Dungeon rather than a place on a team.

Canada did send Onyshko and Denommee to a Challenge Cup in June, but those scores did not get onto the list, so everything remains as it was. The heavy, heavy majority of Canada’s scores here come from early-year domestic competitions, so it will be interesting to watch how things change as we move into the autumn without the benefit of home meets.

Japan scooped up a couple useful scores from Asuka Teramoto at the All-Japan Event Championships to gain a couple tenths this month, though in the end it came up just short of catching Canada. The competition did raise some more questions about Miyakawa and whether her inconsistency would be a detriment to the team—or if her huge potential scores outweigh the risk.

China likewise stayed steady in June, still a couple tenths behind Canada and Japan. China needs Chen to bring back that DTY to get the vault scores closer to those of the best countries. Floor we can barely talk about. A positive for China will be the inclusion of Li Qi in the Asian Games training group of 10, indicating that she’s on her way back.

As expected, the massive scores from the first day of the Brazilian Sabotage Games elevated Brazil multiple points, particularly in the beam department, where the scores were higher than we’re going to see at normal meets. Having Oliveira back competing bars is also critical in giving Brazil a third strong score on an event that can be a weakness.

The Dutch Championship provided a much-needed opportunity for the best in the country to boost their scores—most gymnasts increased their previous numbers by multiple tenths on multiple events—allowing the Netherlands to jump up more than 5 points and 3 ranking spots.

Uh….OK? Poland held a national championship over the weekend, and the scores were aggressively gigantic, but having Marta Pihan-Kulesza back and KJK competing the all-around to help out Janik certainly does give Poland a solid group of three.

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: national championships are fun. No one is expecting the Czech Republic to show up at Euros and start beating Romania, Switzerland, and Spain or replicating these big 13s on beam, but this is a strong generation for the Czech Republic, much deeper and more complete than groups they have had in recent years.

Switzerland had a good month, so we know what that means: Steingruber returned to competing full difficulty and managed to lift Switzerland multiple points. But, it was not just the Steingruber show this month as Käslin, Meier, and Siegenthaler all managed a 2018-best on at least one event as well.

Egypt had a very successful showing at the Mediterranean Games, increasing its total by over 3 points and gaining a couple spots in the rankings. A significant factor to consider with Egypt is that is does not rely on inflated domestic scores to get these totals, with most of these scores coming from FIG world cup events and international team competitions.

Turkey is another country that took advantage of the Mediterranean Games to boost its totals on multiple events by multiple points. The return of Tutya Yilmaz this month was particularly significant for Turkey’s prospects as she’s a lock for a top-2 score in the country on most events at most meets.
