National Team Rankings – July 2018

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated on the first of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. The current rankings include only scores from January 2018–June 2018.

Joining the rankings this month were Poland, Latvia, and Thailand. No nations dropped off.

Last month’s ranking is in parentheses.

1. (1) UNITED STATES – 172.184
Ragan Smith 13.800 14.567 14.200 12.933
Morgan Hurd 14.650 14.600 13.800 14.033
Jordan Chiles 14.700 13.750 13.300 13.650
Kara Eaker 13.350 12.250 15.100 13.550

172.184

43.817 42.917 43.600 41.850
The US didn’t compete in June—save for the Brestyan’s elite qualifier that did not change produce any scores high enough to change anything—so all remains steady versus last month. The only surprise is that Russia wasn’t able to use the historically drug-addled scores from Russian Cup to move back into first.
2. (2) RUSSIA – 171.763
Viktoria Komova 14.400 14.533 13.366 13.666
Angelina Melnikova 14.633 14.666 14.033 14.500
Varvara Zubova 13.333 12.400 13.866 13.266
Angelina Simakova 14.833 14.000 13.066 13.933
Anastasia Ilyankova 13.767 15.300 13.400 13.133
171.763 43.866 44.499 41.299 42.099
Russia got a few good numbers from Russian Cup but not as many as we would typically expect from that competition, one that did little to clarify the uncertainty around the edges of the Euros team. This five could be the team, but this team would rely heavily on Simakova’s vault, which was troubling at Russian Cup, as well as on Zubova hitting beam. Kharenkova remains an option, but her performance at RC event finals would warrant a return to Valentina’s Gymnastics Dungeon rather than a place on a team.
3. (3) CANADA – 170.984
Brooklyn Moors 14.100 12.534 13.767 14.600
Shallon Olsen 14.900 12.700 13.200 13.800
Brittany Rogers 14.550 14.200 12.250 0.000
Ana Padurariu 11.850 14.267 14.234 13.734
Ellie Black 14.400 14.400 14.033 13.833
170.984 43.850 42.867 42.034 42.233
Canada did send Onyshko and Denommee to a Challenge Cup in June, but those scores did not get onto the list, so everything remains as it was. The heavy, heavy majority of Canada’s scores here come from early-year domestic competitions, so it will be interesting to watch how things change as we move into the autumn without the benefit of home meets.
4. (4) JAPAN – 170.931
Asuka Teramoto 14.633 13.933 13.466 13.633
Mai Murakami 14.800 13.866 13.600 14.766
Kiko Kuwajima 14.366 12.750 14.500 12.500
Sae Miyakawa 15.000 12.033 11.700 14.000
Hitomi Hatakeda 14.266 14.400 13.800 13.400
170.931 44.433 42.199 41.900 42.399
Japan scooped up a couple useful scores from Asuka Teramoto at the All-Japan Event Championships to gain a couple tenths this month, though in the end it came up just short of catching Canada. The competition did raise some more questions about Miyakawa and whether her inconsistency would be a detriment to the team—or if her huge potential scores outweigh the risk.
5. (5) CHINA – 170.666
Chen Yile 13.700 14.400 15.000 13.300
Lyu Jiaqi 0.000 14.833 12.933 0.000
Zhang Jin 14.550 12.466 14.500 13.300
Liu Tingting 13.550 14.550 14.600 0.000
Liu Jinru 14.400 12.150 10.350 13.533
170.666 42.650 43.783 44.100 40.133
China likewise stayed steady in June, still a couple tenths behind Canada and Japan. China needs Chen to bring back that DTY to get the vault scores closer to those of the best countries. Floor we can barely talk about. A positive for China will be the inclusion of Li Qi in the Asian Games training group of 10, indicating that she’s on her way back.
6. (6) FRANCE – 169.683
M De Jesus Dos Santos 14.600 14.500 13.933 14.200
Lorette Charpy 13.800 13.900 14.000 13.550
Marine Boyer 14.000 13.100 14.200 13.650
Juliette Bossu 0.000 14.600 0.000 0.000
Coline Devillard 14.550 11.850 12.200 12.650
169.683 43.150 43.000 42.133 41.400
France selected this group of five as its team for the European Championship, where the bold scores should reflect the group that goes in the team final on each event, unless Bossu has added back floor and can come in for Charpy there.
7. (10) BRAZIL – 168.050
Thais Fidelis 13.850 13.000 13.850 13.550
Flavia Saraiva 14.467 13.950 14.350 14.000
Lorrane Oliveira 0.000 13.900 0.000 0.000
Jade Barbosa 14.333 13.850 13.600 13.200
Daniele Hypolito 13.500 12.950 14.650 13.300
168.050 42.650 41.700 42.850 40.850
As expected, the massive scores from the first day of the Brazilian Sabotage Games elevated Brazil multiple points, particularly in the beam department, where the scores were higher than we’re going to see at normal meets. Having Oliveira back competing bars is also critical in giving Brazil a third strong score on an event that can be a weakness.
8. (7) GREAT BRITAIN – 167.400
Amy Tinkler 14.700 13.700 13.200 13.850
Taeja James 13.900 13.000 12.750 14.100
Lucy Stanhope 14.700 12.100 13.050 12.700
Georgia-Mae Fenton 14.050 14.600 13.800 12.500
Alice Kinsella 14.300 13.600 13.700 13.150
167.400 43.700 41.900 40.700 41.100
Great Britain stays in solid position this month but will need to start getting some of the big girls healthy again since those vital Tinkler scores will soon expire as the length of her injury absence grows.
9. (8) AUSTRALIA – 166.475
Emily Whitehead 14.350 13.650 13.100 13.250
Alexandra Eade 0.000 0.000 11.566 13.500
Talia Folino 14.300 13.775 13.175 12.750
Georgia Godwin 14.000 14.575 13.625 14.525
Rianna Mizzen 13.950 14.300 12.675 12.775
166.475 42.650 42.650 39.900 41.275
10. (11) ITALY – 165.217
Giada Grisetti 14.100 13.700 13.500 12.700
Desiree Carofiglio 14.367 13.850 13.000 13.900
Carlotta Ferlito 13.550 0.000 13.550 13.300
Clara Colombo 13.600 13.750 12.950 13.150
Lara Mori 13.650 13.250 13.800 13.750
165.217 42.117 41.300 40.850 40.950
A very strong month of June (Serie A and Mediterranean Games) brought Italy some big new beam numbers for Mori, Grisetti, and Ferlito—as well as a national-best AA score for 2018 from Carofiglio, lifting the Italians back into the top 10.
11. (9) GERMANY – 165.216
Kim Bui 13.850 14.500 12.750 12.800
Sophie Scheder 13.100 14.500 12.350 12.550
Pauline Schäfer 13.650 12.750 14.000 13.100
Sarah Voss 14.500 13.333 13.800 12.500
Elisabeth Seitz 13.600 14.800 12.000 12.966
165.216 42.000 43.800 40.550 38.866
Some very promising numbers at Germany’s European trial from Scheder and Schäfer were nonetheless only able to balance out the expiration of Tabea Alt’s scores (she has now not competed in the last six months) as Germany stays mostly even on total points in the end.
12. (12) BELGIUM – 163.416
Axelle Klinckaert 14.000 13.200 12.500 13.333
Nina Derwael 13.600 15.350 13.500 13.000
Maellyse Brassart 14.100 13.000 10.450 11.900
Rune Hermans 0.000 13.833 13.200 13.500
Senna Deriks 13.900 13.000 11.350 12.650
163.416 42.000 42.383 39.200 39.833
13. (16) NETHERLANDS – 162.049
Celine van Gerner 12.700 13.550 13.700 12.933
Sanne Wevers 0.000 13.600 14.367 0.000
Tisha Volleman 14.166 12.800 12.500 13.267
Elisabeth Geurts 14.100 12.250 10.750 11.100
Vera van Pol 14.067 13.366 12.367 12.433
162.049 42.333 40.516 40.567 38.633
The Dutch Championship provided a much-needed opportunity for the best in the country to boost their scores—most gymnasts increased their previous numbers by multiple tenths on multiple events—allowing the Netherlands to jump up more than 5 points and 3 ranking spots.
14. (NR) POLAND – 160.366
Gabriela Janik 14.200 13.300 13.333 13.600
Katarzyna Jurkowska-Kowalska 13.367 9.733 14.450 12.300
Paula Plichta 0.000 0.000 0.000 13.000
Marta Pihan-Kulesza 13.200 12.833 13.450 13.033
Wiktoria Lopuszanska 13.533 12.000 11.850 11.600
160.366 41.100 38.133 41.233 39.900
Uh….OK? Poland held a national championship over the weekend, and the scores were aggressively gigantic, but having Marta Pihan-Kulesza back and KJK competing the all-around to help out Janik certainly does give Poland a solid group of three.
15. (13) HUNGARY – 159.616
Zsofia Kovacs 13.800 13.900 13.900 13.000
Sara Peter 13.750 11.700 13.000 12.600
Dorina Böczögö 13.200 13.000 10.967 12.900
Boglarka Devai 14.000 0.000 11.700 12.033
Nora Feher 12.650 12.650 13.066 12.650
159.616 41.550 39.550 39.966 38.550
16. (22) CZECH REPUBLIC – 158.650
Dominika Ponizilova 14.050 12.650 13.150 12.200
Anna Yeates 13.850 10.950 11.650 11.750
Kristyna Brabcova 13.100 0.000 13.100 12.950
Lucie Jirikova 13.500 12.500 12.600 12.800
Aneta Holasova 13.950 12.650 13.850 13.150
158.650 41.850 37.800 40.100 38.900
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: national championships are fun. No one is expecting the Czech Republic to show up at Euros and start beating Romania, Switzerland, and Spain or replicating these big 13s on beam, but this is a strong generation for the Czech Republic, much deeper and more complete than groups they have had in recent years.
17. (14) ROMANIA – 157.966
Denisa Golgota 14.467 12.300 13.250 13.500
Carmen Ghiciuc 13.450 12.600 13.350 12.800
Carmen Glavan 13.400 11.050 13.200 12.200
Anamaria Ocolisan 13.650 12.250 11.800 12.866
Nica Ivanus 13.633 10.500 12.800 12.900
157.966 41.750 37.150 39.800 39.266
18. (18) SWITZERLAND – 157.698
Ilaria Käslin 13.150 13.000 12.000 12.433
Giulia Steingruber 15.100 13.066 13.450 13.433
Stefanie Siegenthaler 0.000 11.950 12.650 11.867
Fabienne Studer 13.500 12.600 0.000 0.000
Leonie Meier 13.550 12.433 12.350 12.566
157.698 42.150 38.666 38.450 38.432
Switzerland had a good month, so we know what that means: Steingruber returned to competing full difficulty and managed to lift Switzerland multiple points. But, it was not just the Steingruber show this month as Käslin, Meier, and Siegenthaler all managed a 2018-best on at least one event as well.
19. (19) SPAIN – 157.416
Ana Perez 13.600 13.400 13.300 12.000
Nora Fernandez 14.000 12.950 11.050 11.800
Lluna Casanova 12.950 11.950 12.850 12.450
Laura Bechdeju 13.500 0.000 9.850 12.400
Cintia Rodriguez 13.100 12.900 13.600 12.466
157.416 41.100 39.250 39.750 37.316
Ana Perez is back, a development that helped Spain keep pace with Switzerland’s improvements and stay in touch with that second tier of European powers.
20. (34) MEXICO – 156.200
Paulina Guerra 13.800 11.866 12.867 12.600
Frida Esparza 13.433 13.400 12.400 11.900
Alexa Moreno 14.433 12.867 12.334 11.033
Victoria Mata 13.450 11.733 11.300 12.533
Paulina Campos 13.266 13.266 12.275 12.250
156.200 41.683 39.533 37.601 37.383
Mexico has returned. There were some darks months in there, but June’s national championship—namely the introduction of Frida Esparza and the return of Alexa Moreno’s vaulting—provided the opportunity to get Mexico back into top-24 contention where it should be.
21. (20) SLOVAKIA – 155.400
Barbora Mokosova 13.800 13.800 13.850 13.100
Karolina Takacova 12.500 12.650 12.800 11.300
Chiara Bunce 13.200 11.700 11.800 12.300
Ema Kuklovska 13.000 9.650 12.200 12.050
Radoslava Kalamarova 12.200 12.100 12.600 12.200
155.400 40.000 38.550 39.250 37.600
22. (15) ARGENTINA – 154.809
Ayelen Tarabini 13.400 12.800 11.850 12.467
Augustina Pisos 13.167 13.100 11.967 11.933
Camila Bonzo 13.067 12.633 0.000 0.000
Matina Dominici 14.450 13.300 12.675 13.100
Mayra Vaquie 13.267 12.567 11.533 12.433
154.809 41.117 39.200 36.492 38.000
Argentina lost nearly all of its good beam scores from last December’s South American Championships, which accounts for the significant dip in the rankings. The 12s haven’t really come on beam so far in 2018.
23. (24) EGYPT – 154.600
Farah Hussein 13.450 13.000 13.450 12.450
Farah Salem 12.800 12.350 12.950 12.150
Hana Kassem 12.700 11.250 12.200 11.850
Nancy Taman 14.550 11.950 11.350 12.250
Mandy Mohamed 13.300 10.800 11.700 12.700
154.600 41.300 37.300 38.600 37.400
Egypt had a very successful showing at the Mediterranean Games, increasing its total by over 3 points and gaining a couple spots in the rankings. A significant factor to consider with Egypt is that is does not rely on inflated domestic scores to get these totals, with most of these scores coming from FIG world cup events and international team competitions.
24. (17) ICELAND – 154.498
Dominiqua Belanyi 13.250 12.533 12.350 12.150
Agnes Suto-Tuuha 13.550 11.900 12.700 12.800
Lilja Olafsdottir 12.750 12.466 12.250 12.550
Irina Sazonova 13.250 12.500 12.650 12.733
Thelma Adalsteinsdottir 12.350 12.300 13.300 12.766
154.498 40.050 37.449 38.650 38.299
25. (26) TURKEY – 153.649
Goksu Uctas Sanli 14.050 12.100 13.050 12.900
Demet Mutlu 13.500 12.300 11.900 12.566
Ilyada Sahin 13.300 12.700 11.400 12.000
Doga Ketenci 13.333 9.667 10.000 12.433
Tutya Yilmaz 13.600 12.350 12.300 12.250
153.649 41.150 37.350 37.250 37.899
Turkey is another country that took advantage of the Mediterranean Games to boost its totals on multiple events by multiple points. The return of Tutya Yilmaz this month was particularly significant for Turkey’s prospects as she’s a lock for a top-2 score in the country on most events at most meets.
26. (21) FINLAND – 153.166
Enni Kettunen 13.250 12.533 11.800 12.400
Maija Leinonen 0.000 12.533 12.850 0.000
Sani Makela 13.900 12.050 13.000 12.200

Helmi Murto 12.550 12.400 11.450 12.850
153.166 40.600 37.466 37.650 37.450
Scores at the Nordic Championships were noticeably tighter than they have been for the various Scandinavian countries at their domestic meets, so we didn’t see as much movement from those countries as we would otherwise have expected after a major competition opportunity.
27. (25) PORTUGAL – 152.400
Mariana Marianito 13.300 10.950 12.800 12.700

Tjasa Kysselef 13.850 10.300 12.500 12.750

  1. I can’t even imagine how much work this takes to put together every month. Thank you, Spencer you magnificent human.

  2. I can’t wait for US Classic scores to come in..the return of Biles, Ragan Smith and Riley McCusker and new seniors Kara Eaker, Emma malabuyo, and Gaby perea. What is Ashton locklears status??
