National Team Rankings – September 2018

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated on the first of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. The current rankings include only scores from March 2018–August 2018.

Joining the rankings this month were North Korea, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Bulgaria, and Bangladesh. No nations dropped off.

Last month’s ranking is in parentheses.

1. (1) UNITED STATES – 177.283
Simone Biles 15.600 14.850 15.200 14.750
Morgan Hurd 14.650 14.700 14.100 14.033
Jade Carey 14.650 12.950 13.750 14.200
Riley McCusker 14.350 15.000 14.550 13.600
Kara Eaker 13.700 13.550 15.100 13.650

177.283

44.900 44.550 44.850 42.983
The US always jumps out to a huge lead following its summer competitions, a phenomenon only augmented this year by the Simone factor. The fifth spot in this group remains the question, with Kara Eaker making up the highest-scoring team with the beam 15.100 she received at an elite qualifier. That beam score currently adds a few more tenths than the Jordan Chiles vault 15.000 from nationals.
2. (2) RUSSIA – 171.763
Viktoria Komova 14.400 14.533 13.366 13.666
Angelina Melnikova 14.633 14.666 14.033 14.500
Varvara Zubova 13.333 12.400 13.866 13.266
Angelina Simakova 14.833 14.000 13.366 13.933
Anastasia Ilyankova 13.767 15.300 13.400 13.133
171.763 43.866 44.499 41.299 42.099
In a fairly typical story, the scores awarded at the European Championship are much more conservative than the scores awarded at Russian domestic competitions, so Russia experienced no change despite competing in a major event last month. Russia has many, many potential teams of similar scoring potential, and you can rotate in Akhaimova, Mustafina, and Aleexeva in various combinations to form other teams also scoring in the mid-171s, just a little lower than this group.
3. (5) CHINA – 171.166
Chen Yile 13.800 14.400 15.000 13.400
Lyu Jiaqi 0.000 14.833 12.933 0.000
Zhang Jin 14.550 12.466 14.500 13.300
Liu Tingting 13.650 14.850 14.600 0.000
Liu Jinru 14.400 12.150 10.350 13.533
171.666 42.750 44.083 44.100 40.233
A successful performance at the Asian Games, particularly for Chen Yile and Liu Tingting, returns China its expected 3rd-place position. The 14.833 that Lyu Jiaqi received on bars earlier in the year puts her just the tiniest hair ahead of the scores Luo Huan would bring to the 5, but Luo’s presence on the Asian Games team and ability to bring more than one event means she’s certainly still the favorite for that spot.
4. (3) CANADA – 169.782
Ellie Black 14.400 14.400 14.033 13.833
Shallon Olsen 14.900 12.700 13.200 13.800
Brittany Rogers 14.550 14.200 12.250 0.000
Isabela Onyshko 13.850 14.000 14.133 13.633
Rose Woo 13.950 0.000 13.900 0.000
169.782 43.850 42.600 42.066 41.266
Canada retained a strong position this month despite not competing. The interesting development here is the absence of Brooklyn Moors, whose recent floor scores aren’t quite enough to put her into the highest scoring group. Right now, the team gets more from the Brittany Rogers bars score from April and a residual March beam score from Woo, pre-injury. Expect this team to change, however, in the coming months as some of those old scores filter out—and as Padurariu continues coming back—with the assumption that Moors and Padurariu would both be part of a best-scoring Canadian 5.
4. (6) FRANCE – 169.782
M De Jesus Dos Santos 14.666 14.500 13.933 14.200
Lorette Charpy 13.800 14.133 13.850 13.550
Marine Boyer 14.000 13.100 14.050 13.500
Juliette Bossu 0.000 14.600 0.000 0.000
Coline Devillard 14.800 11.850 12.200 12.650
169.782 43.466 43.233 41.883 41.250
France moves into an exact tie with Canada this month on the strength of its performance at the European Championship, where it solidified itself as the current 2nd-best team in Europe. It’s difficult to get year-best scores at a meet like Euros, but Devillard on vault and Charpy on bars did manage it to help improve France’s overall total.
6. (4) JAPAN – 169.547
Asuka Teramoto 14.650 13.933 13.466 13.633
Mai Murakami 14.800 13.866 13.600 14.766
Yuki Uchiyama 13.500 14.133 13.366 12.833
Sae Miyakawa 15.000 12.033 11.700 14.000
Hitomi Hatakeda 14.266 14.200 13.100 13.400
169.547 44.450 42.266 40.432 42.399
The margins here are all quite small, but Japan did pay the price for not sending a full-strength squad to Asian Games and lost a couple places as a result. The fascinating part here is Uchiyama’s presence in the 5 instead of Sugihara, who has been named to the actual worlds team. Uchiyama’s peak bars number gives her the scoring edge in this framework, but the inconsistency shown at the Asian Games didn’t make a great argument that Uchiyama should be on the actual worlds team.
7. (7) BRAZIL – 168.250
Thais Fidelis 13.850 13.000 13.850 13.750
Flavia Saraiva 14.467 13.950 14.350 14.000
Lorrane Oliveira 0.000 13.900 0.000 0.000
Jade Barbosa 14.333 13.850 13.600 13.200
Daniele Hypolito 13.500 12.950 14.650 13.300
168.250 42.650 41.700 42.850 41.050
Brazil gained a couple tenths as a result of Thais Fidelis’s excellent floor number at the Brazilian Event Championships, but the overall scores there were more reasonable than had been given out at some other Brazilian competitions (which may or may not have had to be canceled because of SABOTAGE), so we saw little ultimate change in the team total.
8. (NR) UKRAINE – 166.875
Diana Varinska 13.933 14.650 14.750 14.033
Angelina Radivilova 13.600 0.000 14.467 14.400
Yana Fedorova 13.600 13.033 13.575 13.000
Valeria Osipova 14.025 11.866 13.667 13.650
Oleksandra Korzh 12.925 12.667 11.667 11.600
166.875 41.558 40.350 42.884 42.083
Evergreen Ukrainian Nationals disclaimer. You know those domestic Ukrainian scores are crazy because the scores from Ukraine’s excellent performance in the team final at Euros did not even come close to making a dent. Ukraine has a legitimate argument to be somewhere in the mid-teens right now, just not 8th.
9. (9) AUSTRALIA – 166.308
Emily Whitehead 14.350 13.650 13.100 13.250
Alexandra Eade 0.000 0.000 0.000 13.333
Talia Folino 14.300 13.775 13.175 12.750
Georgia Godwin 14.000 14.575 13.625 14.525
Rianna Mizzen 13.950 14.300 12.675 12.775
166.308 42.650 42.650 39.900 41.108
10. (10) GREAT BRITAIN – 166.233
Backy Downie 0.000 14.500 12.500 0.000
Taeja James 14.150 13.000 12.466 14.100
Lucy Stanhope 14.700 13.066 13.050 12.700
Georgia-Mae Fenton 13.550 14.600 13.150 13.200
Alice Kinsella 14.333 13.600 13.700 13.150
166.233 43.183 42.700 39.900 40.450
GB did get a little help here and there from its Euros performance, like the improved floor score from Fenton, but the national team is still far too injured to keep up the competitive numbers we would expect from Great Britain.
11. (11) ITALY – 165.617
Giada Grisetti 14.100 13.700 13.500 12.700
Desiree Carofiglio 14.367 13.850 13.000 13.900
Carlotta Ferlito 13.550 0.000 13.550 13.300
Sofia Busato 14.550 0.000 0.000 0.000
Lara Mori 13.650 13.250 13.800 13.750
165.617 43.017 40.800 40.850 40.950
Italy did not record any scores at Euros high enough to change this picture, mostly because the best gymnasts were too injured to be there.
12. (12) GERMANY – 165.216
Kim Bui 13.850 14.500 12.750 12.800
Sophie Scheder 13.100 14.500 12.350 12.550
Pauline Schäfer 13.650 13.100 14.000 13.100
Sarah Voss 14.500 13.333 13.800 12.500
Elisabeth Seitz 13.600 14.800 12.000 12.966
165.216 42.000 43.800 40.550 38.866
See: Italy and Great Britain. That leftover Seitz bars score expires next month (this is why I have scores expire after 6 months, so that injured gymnasts’ good numbers don’t create misleading teams for too, too long), and things are going to get ugly for Germany at that point.
13. (13) NETHERLANDS – 164.416
Celine van Gerner 12.700 13.733 13.700 13.300
Sanne Wevers 0.000 13.733 14.750 0.000
Tisha Volleman 14.266 12.800 13.100 13.267
Elisabeth Geurts 14.200 12.550 12.200 11.750
Vera van Pol 14.067 13.400 12.666 12.900
164.416 42.433 40.516 41.550 39.100
The Netherlands gained nearly a point on last month’s total with its successful showing at the European Championship, almost but not quite enough to break back into that top-12 bloc.
14. (14) BELGIUM – 163.449
Axelle Klinckaert 13.850 13.300 12.500 13.400
Nina Derwael 13.650 15.350 13.600 13.000
Maellyse Brassart 13.700 13.000 13.066 12.633
Rune Hermans 0.000 13.833 13.200 13.500
Senna Deriks 13.533 13.050 11.350 11.900
163.449 41.200 42.483 39.866 39.900
Strong beam performances from Derwael and Brassart at Euros proved to be the main point-getters for Belgium, which nonetheless lost some ground to the Netherlands this month.
15. (15) HUNGARY – 162.750
Zsofia Kovacs 13.800 13.900 13.900 13.000
Sara Peter 13.750 12.000 13.000 12.750
Dorina Böczögö 13.200 13.000 13.200 13.300
Boglarka Devai 14.800 10.300 11.700 12.033
Nora Feher 12.850 13.750 13.600 12.650
162.750 42.350 40.650 40.700 39.050
Hungary secured some serious tenths because of Boglarka Devai’s Cheng at Euros, keeping things fairly close with Belgium.
16. (NR) NORTH KOREA – 161.349
Pyon Rye Yong 14.300 12.033 12.750 12.450
Kim Su Jong 14.300 13.500 13.400 13.333
Ri Su Ryon 0.000 0.000 11.333 12.766
Jong Jang Mi 13.300 14.200 12.450 11.850
Kim Won Yong 13.500 13.100 13.750 12.400
161.349 42.100 40.800 39.900 38.549
North Korea returned to the rankings in style this month with its silver-medal performance at the Asian Games, jumping all the way up to 16th and doing it with non-domestic scores. North Korea is basically a third number on each event away from making a serious challenge to the top 12.
17. (16) POLAND – 160.432
Gabriela Janik 14.200 13.300 13.333 13.600
Katarzyna Jurkowska-Kowalska 13.367 9.733 14.450 12.300
Paula Plichta 0.000 0.000 0.000 13.000
Marta Pihan-Kulesza 13.200 12.833 13.450 13.300
Wiktoria Lopuszanska 13.533 12.066 11.850 11.600
160.432 41.100 38.199 41.233 39.900
18. (17) ROMANIA – 159.266
Denisa Golgota 14.600 12.600 13.250 13.600
Carmen Ghiciuc 13.450 12.600 13.350 12.800
Laura Iacob 13.666 12.450 13.050 12.300
Anamaria Ocolisan 14.300 12.250 11.800 12.900
Nica Ivanus 13.633 10.500 12.800 12.900
159.266 42.566 37.650 39.650 39.400
Golgota had a strong European Championship, though the overall totals did not change much because the scores were never going to be much higher than Romanian domestic totals.
19. (20) SWITZERLAND – 159.132
Ilaria Käslin 13.450 13.000 13.400 12.700
Giulia Steingruber 15.100 13.066 13.450 13.433
Stefanie Siegenthaler 12.650 12.466 12.650 11.867
Fabienne Studer 13.500 12.600 0.000 0.000
Leonie Meier 13.600 12.633 12.350 12.600
159.132 42.200 38.699 39.500 38.733
Things did not look auspicious for Switzerland heading into a European Championship without Steingruber, but that exceptional beam routine from Käslin in qualification actually allowed Switzerland to gain quite a chunk of tenths, along with a spot in the rankings.
20. (19) CZECH REPUBLIC – 158.750
Dominika Ponizilova 14.050 12.650 13.150 12.200
Anna Yeates 13.850 10.950 11.650 11.750
Kristyna Brabcova 13.100 0.000 13.100 12.950
Lucie Jirikova 13.500 12.500 12.600 12.800
Aneta Holasova 13.950 12.750 13.850 13.150
158.750 41.850 37.900 40.100 38.900
21. (18) SPAIN – 158.550
Ana Perez 13.700 13.567 13.300 12.767
Nora Fernandez 14.000 12.950 11.050 12.333
Paula Raya 13.266 13.350 11.550 12.000
Helena Bonilla 13.933 13.100 12.700 12.267
Cintia Rodriguez 13.133 12.900 13.033 12.767
158.550 41.633 40.017 39.033 37.867
22. (NR) SOUTH KOREA – 157.400
Ham Miju 13.700 0.000 0.000 12.500
Kim Jury 13.450 13.550 12.200 12.600
Lee Eunju 0.000 13.250 12.150 0.000
Yeo Seojeong 14.600 12.950 13.400 12.900
Yun Narae 13.600 12.550 12.100 11.850
157.400 41.900 39.750 37.750 38.000
The breakout performance of Yeo Seojeong at the Asian Games allowed South Korea to return to the rankings with a critical placement of 22nd. Being in this section of the rankings starts getting important now since the top 24 teams at worlds will advance to 2019.
23. (21) MEXICO – 157.142
Paulina Guerra 13.800 11.866 12.867 12.600
Ahtziri Sandoval 14.000 13.450 0.000 0.000
Alexa Moreno 14.433 12.867 12.334 11.033
Victoria Mata 13.450 11.733 11.300 12.750
Paulina Campos 13.650 13.266 12.275 12.500
157.142 42.233 39.583 37.476 37.850
Mexico has already announced its worlds team, which includes Mata, Campos, and Moreno–along with Frida Esparza and Nicolle Castro. The surprising omission there is Sandoval, whom you would think must be injured to be left off the team, considering she has the best bars routine of the bunch and a useful vault score as well.
24. (22) SLOVAKIA – 156.150
Barbora Mokosova 13.800 14.200 13.850 13.100

  1. Yep, for US, the 5th position is always the hardest since they have so many options for it….

you should do a hypothetic ranking for their B team to see where they are. I haven’t added things up but i am wondering if the B team of pan am can still be in the lead or not.. (gotta be prepared for worst case scenario?)…. lol

  2. Spencer,
Just a piece of feedback: you listed Luciana Alvarado twice for Costa Rica.

I so look forward to the brand new month and these National Team Rankings. It’s like the highlight of the start of each month for me.

I can’t wait for Jamaica to be on the ranking list. They are sending a full team to Pan Am Champs and Danusia Francis will be competing, but not Toni Ann Williams due to elbow injury. I hope Toni Ann can make it back healthy to compete in Doha with the rest of the Jamaican team.

Also, to clarify the top 24 teams move on after Doha, but there will likely be 25 teams in Stuttgart. Per continental quota, a team from Africa will qualify if they don’t qualify in the top 24. Egypt dropped a few places this month due to North and South Korea getting in the mix, so it will be interesting to see where they place at Worlds. South Africa will be their only competition for the slot, but RSA is in subdivision 7 whereas, Egypt is in subdivision 10. That will be an interesting battle.

  3. Please can we stop pretending that Eaker’s 15.1 is legit. A 14.1 wouldn’t be legit.

  4. When Kara Eaker hits all her connections, her beam is exquisite. I think she is great and one of the best Beamers we have on the US team. She has hit over 15.00 at least twice I believe so the judges can’t be that wrong!
