National Team Rankings – October 2018

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated on the first of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. The current rankings include only scores from April 2018–September 2018.

Joining the rankings for the first time this month were Jamaica and El Salvador. Dropping off the rankings were Singapore, Philippines, and Bulgaria.

Last month’s ranking is in parentheses.

1. (1) UNITED STATES – 177.517
Simone Biles 15.600 14.850 15.200 14.750
Morgan Hurd 14.650 14.700 14.100 13.850
Jade Carey 14.667 12.950 13.750 14.600
Riley McCusker 14.350 15.000 14.550 13.600
Kara Eaker 13.700 13.550 15.100 13.767

177.517

44.917 44.550 44.850 43.200
This US team gained a few tenths in September because of Jade Carey’s scores at Pan Ams, though the best-scoring five did not change as a result of that competition. Jade Carey does not appear on the nominative worlds roster the US submitted, her spot instead filled by Grace McCallum, so I’m sure we’ll have a lot to talk about in that regard heading to the selection camp. No one is sure whether it’s just nominative roster stuff or if the US women’s program still doesn’t understand the best strategy for using these spots.
2. (2) RUSSIA – 171.763
Viktoria Komova 14.400 14.533 13.366 13.666
Angelina Melnikova 14.633 14.666 14.033 14.500
Varvara Zubova 13.333 12.400 13.866 13.266
Angelina Simakova 14.833 14.000 13.366 13.933
Anastasia Ilyankova 13.767 15.300 13.400 13.133
171.763 43.866 44.499 41.299 42.099
I did not remove Komova from Russia’s team even though I typically remove retired gymnasts because in this case…who even knows? Of this group, Russia’s nominative team includes only Melnikova and Simakova, Zubova being far too inconsistent to consider and Komova and Ilyankova being on the outs apparently for various reasons. For reference, the nominative Russian team would be at 170.630, mostly a result of losing Ilyankova’s admittedly fancy 15.300 on bars.
3. (3) CHINA – 171.283
Chen Yile 13.800 14.400 15.000 13.400
Fan Yilin 0.000 14.950 0.000 0.000
Zhang Jin 14.550 12.450 14.500 13.300
Liu Tingting 13.650 14.850 14.600 0.000
Liu Jinru 14.400 12.150 10.350 13.533
171.283 42.750 44.200 44.100 40.233
The return of Fan Yilin at the event championships helped China boost its bars score and continue making a run at Russia in 2nd. We’ll see if Fan gets a last-minute spot on the worlds team since she doesn’t appear on the nominative roster. Du Siyu is there instead, with Luo Huan as an alternate. Conversely, China may feel that it wants the surety of an AAer who can also put up a solid bars score (the floor situation being what it is), rather than bringing only a bars routine. Even putting in Du Siyu instead of Fan Yilin, China’s nominative roster would score 170.733 here, higher than Russia’s nominative roster.
4. (4) CANADA – 169.615
Ellie Black 14.400 14.400 14.033 13.833
Shallon Olsen 14.800 12.700 12.333 13.800
Brittany Rogers 14.550 14.200 12.250 0.000
Isabela Onyshko 13.850 13.700 14.133 13.633
Ana Padurariu 0.000 13.966 13.867 0.000
169.615 43.750 42.566 42.033 41.266
The return of Ana Padurariu on bars and beam earned her a spot back in the highest-scoring Canadian five, which still doesn’t include Brooklyn Moors. That’s because Moors’ 14.033 on floor theoretically doesn’t add enough, but it definitely would in real life. The announced Canadian team is Black, Olsen, Moors, Padurariu, and Denommee—Onyshko being the notable omission there—a team that would score 167.332 in these rankings.
5. (6) JAPAN – 169.572
Asuka Teramoto 14.650 13.933 13.466 13.633
Mai Murakami 14.800 13.866 13.700 14.766
Yuki Uchiyama 13.500 14.133 12.333 12.833
Sae Miyakawa 15.000 12.033 11.700 14.000
Juri Kashiwagi 14.533 12.900 13.625 12.750
169.572 44.450 41.932 40.791 42.399
Japan’s best-scoring team always seems to get a little weird, and this month is no exception with the introduction of Juri Kashiwagi, whom I’ve literally never seen before but who has been getting big vault and beam scores at random meets the last couple months. The big news for Japan is Miyakawa not going to worlds. Nagi Kajita was the originally named alternate and the nominative roster seems to indicate she’ll be the replacement, with Uchiyama now slotting into the alternate spot, and Hatakeda and Sugihara also appearing on the team as expected. That Kajita team would be at 168.012 in these rankings.
6. (4) FRANCE – 169.349
M De Jesus Dos Santos 14.666 14.500 13.600 14.200
Lorette Charpy 13.800 14.133 13.850 13.550
Marine Boyer 13.900 13.000 14.250 13.300
Juliette Bossu 0.000 14.600 0.000 0.000
Coline Devillard 14.800 11.850 12.200 12.650
169.349 43.466 43.233 41.883 41.250
This has been the pretty obvious French five for a while now, but Devillard will miss worlds with injury, having to be replaced on the team by Louise Vanhille and resulting in the less of about a point on vault. That named group of five would be at 168.232 here.
7. (7) BRAZIL – 169.049
Thais Fidelis 13.850 13.000 13.850 13.750
Flavia Saraiva 14.467 13.950 14.667 14.233
Rebeca Andrade 14.033 13.933 0.000 0.000
Jade Barbosa 14.333 13.850 13.600 13.333
Daniele Hypolito 13.500 12.950 14.650 13.300
169.049 42.833 41.733 43.167 41.316
Brazil gained a few tenths with the return of Andrade this month, as well as the huge beam score from Saraiva. On the nominative roster, Oliveira still appears rather than Hypolito, revealing of the extremely suspect nature of Hypolito’s 14.650 from Sabotage Nationals. Right now, it looks like Brazil would rather go with Barbosa on beam and then have Oliveira for bars instead of Saraiva, which makes sense.
8. (NR) UKRAINE – 166.567
Diana Varinska 13.933 14.650 14.750 14.033
Angelina Radivilova 13.600 12.150 14.467 14.400
Yana Fedorova 13.450 12.725 13.575 13.000
Valeria Osipova 14.025 11.950 13.667 13.650
Oleksandra Korzh 12.925 12.667 11.667 11.600
166.567 41.558 40.042 42.884 42.083
Evergreen Ukrainian Nationals disclaimer.
9. (9) AUSTRALIA – 166.500
Emily Whitehead 14.350 13.650 13.100 13.250
Georgia-Rose Brown 13.775 14.000 13.300 13.100
Talia Folino 14.300 13.775 13.175 12.750
Georgia Godwin 14.000 14.575 13.625 14.525
Rianna Mizzen 13.950 14.300 12.675 12.775
166.500 42.650 42.875 40.100 40.875
Australian Classic gave Brown the scores necessary to get back into the 5, as we would expect her to be. Australia’s nominative roster for worlds does not include Georgia Godwin, which is troubling because under healthy circumstances she would obviously be there as the very first choice for the team. Instead, Australia’s roster includes Eade and Munteanu (with Folino as the alternate), a team I have on 162.833.
10. (10) GREAT BRITAIN – 166.233
Backy Downie 0.000 14.600 12.500 0.000
Taeja James 14.150 13.000 11.450 14.100
Kelly Simm 14.100 14.066 13.050 12.933
Georgia-Mae Fenton 13.550 14.600 13.150 13.200
Alice Kinsella 14.333 13.400 13.700 13.150
166.233 42.583 43.266 39.900 40.450
GB is going with both Becky and Ellie Downie on its worlds team (and no Taeja James), which normally would be a no-brainer, but there will be concerns about how many events Ellie can cover right now and whether the team is too loaded on bars and too light on the other events. In these rankings, GB’s named team would score 164.682.
11. (12) GERMANY – 165.699
Kim Bui 13.850 14.500 12.750 13.200
Sophie Scheder 13.450 14.500 12.350 12.566
Pauline Schäfer 13.650 13.466 14.000 13.100
Sarah Voss 14.433 12.750 13.800 12.600
Elisabeth Seitz 13.900 14.666 11.500 13.000
165.699 42.183 43.666 40.550 39.300
Under typical circumstances, this is the obvious team for Germany (and it is the nominative team), especially with Seitz and Scheder coming back and doing well enough to allay some fears at German nationals. The only question now is Schäfer’s status, as she competed only bars at nationals, and the team desperately needs her beam and floor. Like, desperately.
12. (11) ITALY – 165.467
Giada Grisetti 14.100 13.700 13.500 12.700
Desiree Carofiglio 14.367 13.850 13.000 13.900
Carlotta Ferlito 13.550 0.000 13.550 13.300
Sofia Busato 14.550 0.000 0.000 0.000
Lara Mori 13.650 13.250 13.800 13.600
165.467 43.017 40.800 40.850 40.800
Because of the epic injury status of Italy’s program right now, only Mori from this group appears on Italy’s actual nominative worlds team, which also includes vault and bars savior Martina Rizzelli, who hasn’t competed since a Serie A in May 2017.
13. (13) NETHERLANDS – 164.416
Celine van Gerner 12.700 13.733 13.700 13.300
Sanne Wevers 0.000 13.733 14.750 0.000
Tisha Volleman 14.266 12.800 13.100 13.267
Elisabeth Geurts 14.200 12.550 12.200 11.750
Vera van Pol 14.067 13.400 12.666 12.900
164.416 42.433 40.516 41.550 39.100
No change for the Netherlands this month, but the absence of Van Gerner at worlds will be a blow. The nominative team is going with Visser and Polderman instead of Van Gerner and Geurts, a team that would be at 162.715.
14. (15) HUNGARY – 163.250
Zsofia Kovacs 13.800 13.900 13.900 13.000
Noemi Makra 13.200 13.600 12.200 12.800
Dorina Böczögö 13.600 13.400 13.200 13.300
Boglarka Devai 14.800 10.300 11.700 11.500
Nora Feher 12.850 13.750 13.600 12.650
163.250 42.200 41.250 40.700 39.100
Hungary competed a ton in September and reaped a ranking spot as a result. The big decision for the worlds team is whether to go with this five or with Sara Peter. The nominative roster reflects this currently highest-scoring group.
15. (23) MEXICO – 162.217
Paulina Guerra 13.366 11.866 12.867 12.600
Ahtziri Sandoval 14.000 13.450 0.000 0.000
Alexa Moreno 14.467 12.867 12.900 13.200
Frida Esparza 13.933 13.900 13.567 13.333
Nicolle Castro 13.450 14.000 11.450 11.850
162.217 42.400 41.350 39.334 39.133
Don’t underestimate how high the scores at Pan Ams were, or how well the Mexican team did. 15th is an unrealistic expectation for Mexico at worlds (a team that is planning to use Mata and Campos instead of Sandoval and Guerra), but Mexico could place quite well nonetheless.
16. (14) BELGIUM – 161.665
Axelle Klinckaert 13.850 13.300 12.333 13.400
Nina Derwael 13.650 15.350 13.600 12.866
Maellyse Brassart 13.700 13.000 13.066 12.633
Rune Hermans 0.000 13.450 12.800 0.000
Senna Deriks 13.350 13.050 11.350 11.900
161.665 41.200 42.100 39.466 38.899
Belgium lost some important scores from Hermans this month, since it has been so long since she competed floor, accounting for the drop in rankings. They are expecting to have her back for worlds as of now, and Belgium will expect to do much better than 16th at worlds.
17. (16) NORTH KOREA – 160.675
Pyon Rye Yong 14.300 0.000 12.750 12.450
Kim Su Jong 14.300 13.500 13.400 13.025
Jong Un Gyong 0.000 13.000 0.000 0.000
Jong Jang Mi 13.300 14.200 12.450 11.850
Kim Won Yong 13.500 13.100 13.750 12.400
160.675 42.100 40.800 39.900 37.875
18. (19) SWITZERLAND – 160.450
Ilaria Käslin 13.800 13.250 13.400 12.850
Giulia Steingruber 15.100 12.250 13.450 13.150
Stefanie Siegenthaler 13.450 13.300 12.650 11.900
Jessica Diacci 13.100 13.100 11.500 11.900
Leonie Meier 13.800 12.633 12.400 12.600
160.450 42.700 39.650 39.500 38.600
Switzerland gained some ground this month, but the lingering presence of Steingruber—who will not be at worlds—is still buoying the team ranking. Switzerland shouldn’t struggle to make the top 24 at worlds, but it also can’t risk a bad day. Things are too close.
19. (17) POLAND – 160.432
Gabriela Janik 14.200 13.300 13.333 13.600
Katarzyna Jurkowska-Kowalska 13.367 9.733 14.450 12.300
Paula Plichta 0.000 0.000 0.000 13.000
Marta Pihan-Kulesza 13.200 12.833 13.450 13.300
Wiktoria Lopuszanska 13.533 12.066 11.850 11.600
160.432 41.100 38.199 41.233 39.900
20. (18) ROMANIA – 159.266
Denisa Golgota 14.600 12.600 13.250 13.600
Carmen Ghiciuc 13.450 12.600 13.350 12.800
Laura Iacob 13.666 12.450 13.050 12.300
Anamaria Ocolisan 14.300 12.250 11.800 12.900
Nica Ivanus 13.633 10.500 12.800 12.900
159.266 42.566 37.650 39.650 39.400
Romania will enjoy its national championship this coming month, and because Romanian nationals always has some of the very craziest scoring, we can expect a major ranking surge soon. Ocolisan’s injury means that Holbura is currently getting the nod for worlds, at least pre-nationals.
20. (21) SPAIN – 159.266
Ana Perez 13.700 13.567 13.300 13.050
Nora Fernandez 14.000 11.800 10.933 12.333

The other nations in this portion of the rankings will be the only ones pleased that Cuba is not sending any women to worlds. Takes a top-24 contender out of the mix.

  1. France with only MDJDS, Charpy, Boyer and Bossu scores 168.349, so adding Vanhille can’t score just 168.232

  2. I’d say Brittany Rogers is a bigger omission from Canada’s team than Onyshko, which has me wondering if Rogers retired for real. Onyshko’s recent World Cup performance in Szombathely pretty much explains her exclusion from the team.

  3. Canada’s Ellie Black just played the Challenge Cup in Paris (Oct. 1):

    Gold on beam
    Silver on vault
    Silver on floor
    Bronze on bars

  4. Spence, can you please use yr usag connections to straighten out tom’s crazy mindset or at least get to the bottom of this craziness? I mean jade is like throwing away 3 worlds medals for nothing…lol…

Maybe you should talk to jade too if you can?

  5. USAG is saying Jade and Trin turned down their invitations. No word on Emma Malabuyo…

Also, Becky’s in the chart as Backy Downie

  6. usag says that jade declined the invite to nationals. what is the highest-scoring us team without her? i assume it includes jordan chiles, thanks to her amanar? what does the nominative team score?

    1. Putting Grace McCallum’s 14.633 on vault and her 14.00 on floor in for Jade Carey (both from Pan Ams), I get 176.883 for the nominative team. I didn’t do the math on a Chiles team, but I think it would score similarly (maybe .1 better) – because what you would add for putting in her Amanar, you would lose almost as much by putting up Eaker on floor instead of McCallum. Overall, McCallum is a much safer bet as you get someone who can do every event and who has a sure thing DTY vs a maybe Amanar.

      1. Thanks for this!! I do not think Grace’s spot on the team will be in danger from Jordan Chiles; if Chiles gets on the team for her Amanar, she will almost certainly take Kara’s spot. An Amanar would definitely score better in TF than even the best beam routines… but then again, is Kara more likely to be competitive for an individual medal?

Of all the gymnasts attending selection camp, only Ragan Smith could edge her way onto this team, if she is healthy. She might jeopardize Grace’s spot, as they would presumably use them in mostly the same way in TF… but Grace has been on fire this year, so I doubt it.

    2. Sounds like Jade and her coach have decided they are going for the World Cup circuit to guarantee her a spot in 2020 and not having to rely on USAG to select her at Trials.

I’ve always wondered if Skinner would redshirt for her senior year at Utah and make a elite comeback herself, trying the World Cup circuit to qualify so she can guarantee herself a spot after she was “burned” (in her opinion) by USAG in 2016.

Would it even be possible for both Carey and Skinner to qualify for 2020? And if they can, does that remove two spots from the USAG team – therefore they can only take Simone and three others?

      1. Skinner and Carey would be fighting for the same +1 spot.

A federation can only take +2. World Cup Specialists (nominative), or AA selected at World Cup AA (top 3 countries), and at the Continental Championships (Top 2 AA)

      2. Thanks.

Though I don’t think that would stop Skinner from trying to take the spot away from Carey, given her reaction to being an alternate in 2016. Skinner is still doing quite a bit of difficulty at Utah. Will be interesting to see if she choses to redshirt a year to travel and try to qualify.

Last I heard among the NCAA gymnasts who competed at 2016 Trials only Skinner and Kocian haven’t declared their elite retirements yet. Kocian seems like she is heading towards retirement though…

  7. Hope you will do a Team Qualifications preview, once the finalized roster comes out in a few weeks.

  8. You shoul do a revised scoring for US team…. give them a few lower points for what they do not deserve due to tom s stupidity…lol
