National Team Rankings – October 2018

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated on the first of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. The current rankings include only scores from April 2018–September 2018.

Joining the rankings for the first time this month were Jamaica and El Salvador. Dropping off the rankings were Singapore, Philippines, and Bulgaria.

This US team gained a few tenths in September because of Jade Carey’s scores at Pan Ams, though the best-scoring five did not change as a result of that competition. Jade Carey does not appear on the nominative worlds roster the US submitted, her spot instead filled by Grace McCallum, so I’m sure we’ll have a lot to talk about in that regard heading to the selection camp. No one is sure whether it’s just nominative roster stuff or if the US women’s program still doesn’t understand the best strategy for using these spots.

I did not remove Komova from Russia’s team even though I typically remove retired gymnasts because in this case…who even knows? Of this group, Russia’s nominative team includes only Melnikova and Simakova, Zubova being far too inconsistent to consider and Komova and Ilyankova being on the outs apparently for various reasons. For reference, the nominative Russian team would be at 170.630, mostly a result of losing Ilyankova’s admittedly fancy 15.300 on bars.

The return of Fan Yilin at the event championships helped China boost its bars score and continue making a run at Russia in 2nd. We’ll see if Fan gets a last-minute spot on the worlds team since she doesn’t appear on the nominative roster. Du Siyu is there instead, with Luo Huan as an alternate. Conversely, China may feel that it wants the surety of an AAer who can also put up a solid bars score (the floor situation being what it is), rather than bringing only a bars routine. Even putting in Du Siyu instead of Fan Yilin, China’s nominative roster would score 170.733 here, higher than Russia’s nominative roster.

The return of Ana Padurariu on bars and beam earned her a spot back in the highest-scoring Canadian five, which still doesn’t include Brooklyn Moors. That’s because Moors’ 14.033 on floor theoretically doesn’t add enough, but it definitely would in real life. The announced Canadian team is Black, Olsen, Moors, Padurariu, and Denommee—Onyshko being the notable omission there—a team that would score 167.332 in these rankings.

Japan’s best-scoring team always seems to get a little weird, and this month is no exception with the introduction of Juri Kashiwagi, whom I’ve literally never seen before but who has been getting big vault and beam scores at random meets the last couple months. The big news for Japan is Miyakawa not going to worlds. Nagi Kajita was the originally named alternate and the nominative roster seems to indicate she’ll be the replacement, with Uchiyama now slotting into the alternate spot, and Hatakeda and Sugihara also appearing on the team as expected. That Kajita team would be at 168.012 in these rankings.

This has been the pretty obvious French five for a while now, but Devillard will miss worlds with injury, having to be replaced on the team by Louise Vanhille and resulting in the less of about a point on vault. That named group of five would be at 168.232 here.

Brazil gained a few tenths with the return of Andrade this month, as well as the huge beam score from Saraiva. On the nominative roster, Oliveira still appears rather than Hypolito, revealing of the extremely suspect nature of Hypolito’s 14.650 from Sabotage Nationals. Right now, it looks like Brazil would rather go with Barbosa on beam and then have Oliveira for bars instead of Saraiva, which makes sense.

Australian Classic gave Brown the scores necessary to get back into the 5, as we would expect her to be. Australia’s nominative roster for worlds does not include Georgia Godwin, which is troubling because under healthy circumstances she would obviously be there as the very first choice for the team. Instead, Australia’s roster includes Eade and Munteanu (with Folino as the alternate), a team I have on 162.833.

GB is going with both Becky and Ellie Downie on its worlds team (and no Taeja James), which normally would be a no-brainer, but there will be concerns about how many events Ellie can cover right now and whether the team is too loaded on bars and too light on the other events. In these rankings, GB’s named team would score 164.682.

Under typical circumstances, this is the obvious team for Germany (and it is the nominative team), especially with Seitz and Scheder coming back and doing well enough to allay some fears at German nationals. The only question now is Schäfer’s status, as she competed only bars at nationals, and the team desperately needs her beam and floor. Like, desperately.

Don’t underestimate how high the scores at Pan Ams were, or how well the Mexican team did. 15th is an unrealistic expectation for Mexico at worlds (a team that is planning to use Mata and Campos instead of Sandoval and Guerra), but Mexico could place quite well nonetheless.

  1. France with only MDJDS, Charpy, Boyer and Bossu scores 168.349, so adding Vanhille can’t score just 168.232

  2. I’d say Brittany Rogers is a bigger omission from Canada’s team than Onyshko, which has me wondering if Rogers retired for real. Onyshko’s recent World Cup performance in Szombathely pretty much explains her exclusion from the team.

  7. usag says that jade declined the invite to nationals. what is the highest-scoring us team without her? i assume it includes jordan chiles, thanks to her amanar? what does the nominative team score?

    1. Putting Grace McCallum’s 14.633 on vault and her 14.00 on floor in for Jade Carey (both from Pan Ams), I get 176.883 for the nominative team. I didn’t do the math on a Chiles team, but I think it would score similarly (maybe .1 better) – because what you would add for putting in her Amanar, you would lose almost as much by putting up Eaker on floor instead of McCallum. Overall, McCallum is a much safer bet as you get someone who can do every event and who has a sure thing DTY vs a maybe Amanar.

      1. Thanks for this!! I do not think Grace’s spot on the team will be in danger from Jordan Chiles; if Chiles gets on the team for her Amanar, she will almost certainly take Kara’s spot. An Amanar would definitely score better in TF than even the best beam routines… but then again, is Kara more likely to be competitive for an individual medal?

        Of all the gymnasts attending selection camp, only Ragan Smith could edge her way onto this team, if she is healthy. She might jeopardize Grace’s spot, as they would presumably use them in mostly the same way in TF… but Grace has been on fire this year, so I doubt it.

    2. Sounds like Jade and her coach have decided they are going for the World Cup circuit to guarantee her a spot in 2020 and not having to rely on USAG to select her at Trials.

      I’ve always wondered if Skinner would redshirt for her senior year at Utah and make a elite comeback herself, trying the World Cup circuit to qualify so she can guarantee herself a spot after she was “burned” (in her opinion) by USAG in 2016.

      Would it even be possible for both Carey and Skinner to qualify for 2020? And if they can, does that remove two spots from the USAG team – therefore they can only take Simone and three others?

      1. Skinner and Carey would be fighting for the same +1 spot.

        A federation can only take +2. World Cup Specialists (nominative), or AA selected at World Cup AA (top 3 countries), and at the Continental Championships (Top 2 AA)

        Though I don’t think that would stop Skinner from trying to take the spot away from Carey, given her reaction to being an alternate in 2016. Skinner is still doing quite a bit of difficulty at Utah. Will be interesting to see if she choses to redshirt a year to travel and try to qualify.

        Last I heard among the NCAA gymnasts who competed at 2016 Trials only Skinner and Kocian haven’t declared their elite retirements yet. Kocian seems like she is heading towards retirement though…
