National Team Rankings – November 2018

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated at the beginning of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. The current rankings include only scores from May 2018–October 2018 (extended to include the entirety of world championships).

Joining the rankings this month were Belarus and Serbia. Dropping off the rankings were Malta and Sri Lanka.

Last month’s ranking is in parentheses.

1. (1) UNITED STATES – 178.832
Simone Biles 16.000 14.866 15.200 15.333
Grace McCallum 14.633 14.533 14.300 14.300
Jade Carey 14.667 12.950 13.750 14.600
Riley McCusker 14.450 15.000 14.550 13.850
Kara Eaker 13.950 13.550 15.150 13.767

178.832

45.300 44.399 44.900 44.233
While the world championship provides a massive competition opportunity for so many athletes, it doesn’t tend to shift the national team rankings too much because scores are much stricter than they are at these country-club domestic competitions. That’s true for the US as well, with most of the gains this month coming from selection camp scores, which also account for McCallum replacing Hurd in the highest-scoring group because of the floor score she received at camp.
2. (3) CHINA – 171.316
Chen Yile 13.800 14.400 15.000 13.400
Fan Yilin 0.000 14.950 0.000 0.000
Zhang Jin 14.550 12.450 14.500 13.333
Liu Tingting 13.650 14.850 14.600 0.000
Liu Jinru 14.400 12.150 10.350 13.533
171.316 42.750 44.200 44.100 40.266
China’s movement ahead of Russia this month despite finishing behind the Russians at worlds is primarily due to Russia’s national championship falling off the rankings this month while China’s won’t until next month (and then expect a dip), but the team final also showed that the difference between the two teams is not as large as we might have previously thought.
3. (7) BRAZIL – 170.382
Thais Fidelis 13.850 13.000 13.850 13.750
Flavia Saraiva 14.533 13.950 14.667 14.233
Rebeca Andrade 14.633 14.333 13.300 0.000
Jade Barbosa 14.600 13.850 13.600 13.333
Daniele Hypolito 13.500 12.950 14.650 13.300
170.382 43.766 42.133 43.167 41.316
This ranking may be overstating Brazil’s current stature a little bit (the Hypolito beam score is still…I mean…), but it’s not absolutely, completely ridiculous. It far from a fluke that Brazil ended up a hit bars rotation away from a team bronze medal at worlds. The performances back it up, especially on vault and floor.
4. (2) RUSSIA – 170.029
Aliya Mustafina 0.000 14.500 13.266 13.200
Angelina Melnikova 14.566 14.566 13.466 14.033
Lilia Akhaimova 14.566 12.866 12.100 13.900
Angelina Simakova 14.533 14.000 13.400 13.933
Anastasia Ilyankova 13.566 15.300 12.866 13.133
170.029 43.665 44.366 40.132 41.866
(Note: Swapping out Mustafina for Komova would produce a team with the exact same score.) In a strange turn of events, Russia is the team not benefiting from crazy home beam scores in this month’s rankings. Don’t worry, it will pass.
5. (6) FRANCE – 169.482
M De Jesus Dos Santos 14.666 14.500 13.733 14.200
Lorette Charpy 13.800 14.133 13.850 13.550
Marine Boyer 13.900 13.000 14.250 13.300
Juliette Bossu 0.000 14.600 10.700 0.000
Coline Devillard 14.800 11.850 12.200 12.650
169.482 43.366 43.233 41.833 41.050
France had a fine but not ideal worlds, and these rankings leave me wondering what a Coline Devillard vault score might have done for France’s prospects in the team final. Everyone was so, so close.
6. (4) CANADA – 169.414
Ellie Black 14.400 14.400 14.033 13.833
Shallon Olsen 14.800 12.700 12.833 13.800
Brooklyn Moors 14.100 13.066 13.400 14.033
Isabela Onyshko 13.850 13.650 14.133 13.633
Ana Padurariu 0.000 13.966 14.100 0.000
169.414 43.466 42.016 42.266 41.666
Canada has been hovering all year long in this 3-6 range, with the lingering question of how realistic that might actually be in a competition context. Canada’s 4th-place showing at worlds proved that it is realistic and that Canada belongs in this group.
7. (5) JAPAN – 168.205
Asuka Teramoto 14.650 13.933 13.400 13.633
Mai Murakami 14.800 13.733 13.766 14.300
Hitomi Hatakeda 14.033 13.966 13.133 13.100
Sae Miyakawa 14.866 11.900 11.700 13.533
Juri Kashiwagi 14.433 12.900 13.625 12.750
168.205 44.316 41.632 40.791 41.466
If one team among the major players suffered disappointing scores at worlds, it was Japan (besides Murakami, who was kind of a big deal, if you haven’t heard). As a result, Japan dropped some ground on the lead group this month, particularly because of bars. These scores need a little domestic championship action to boost them again.
8. (11) GERMANY – 166.399
Kim Bui 13.650 14.450 12.750 13.350
Sophie Scheder 13.550 14.500 13.400 12.566
Pauline Schäfer 13.650 13.466 14.000 13.100
Sarah Voss 14.433 12.750 13.800 12.750
Elisabeth Seitz 13.900 14.666 11.700 13.150
166.399 41.983 43.616 41.200 39.600
One of the major winners oatworlds was Germany, notching the upset to advance to the team final and hitting the required number of beam routines, even without Schäfer. Along with Brazil, Germany was the big mover among the top nations this month.
9. (9) AUSTRALIA – 166.100
Emily Whitehead 14.350 13.650 13.100 13.250
Georgia-Rose Brown 13.775 13.800 13.300 12.750
Alexandra Eade 13.775 0.000 12.400 13.325
Georgia Godwin 14.000 14.575 13.625 14.525
Rianna Mizzen 13.950 14.300 12.675 12.775
166.100 42.300 42.675 40.025 41.100
The extra-depleted Australian team did what it could do at worlds, but be warned: the totally fictional scores from Australian nationals drop off the rankings after this month, and it’s not going to be pretty.
10. (8) UKRAINE – 165.950
Diana Varinska 13.966 14.000 14.750 14.033
Angelina Radivilova 13.600 12.150 14.467 14.400
Yana Fedorova 13.600 12.725 13.575 13.000
Valeria Osipova 14.025 11.950 13.667 13.650
Oleksandra Korzh 12.925 12.667 11.667 11.600
165.950 41.558 40.042 42.884 42.083
Evergreen Ukrainian Nationals disclaimer.
11. (10) GREAT BRITAIN – 165.482
Becky Downie 0.000 14.600 12.500 0.000
Lucy Stanhope 14.566 13.066 12.300 12.500
Ellie Downie 14.400 14.000 13.300 13.233
Georgia-Mae Fenton 13.550 14.100 13.150 13.200
Alice Kinsella 14.333 12.150 13.450 13.150
165.482 43.299 42.700 39.900 39.583
GB will be exceptionally disappointed not to have made the team final at worlds, but those four bold scores next to Ellie Downie’s name are a sign that things are moving in the right direction once again. If you add Tinkler, Fragapane, and Amelie Morgan into the mix for next year…
12. (13) NETHERLANDS – 165.481
Celine van Gerner 12.700 13.733 13.700 13.300
Sanne Wevers 0.000 13.733 14.750 0.000
Tisha Volleman 14.266 12.833 13.100 13.433
Elisabeth Geurts 14.200 12.600 12.200 12.550
Naomi Visser 13.766 14.000 13.100 13.500
165.481 42.232 41.466 41.550 40.233
The Netherlands put up a solid 10th-place finish in qualification at worlds, about as much as could be expected without Van Gerner or Thorsdottir and with Volleman getting a 0 on vault. The revelation of the competition was Naomi Visser, whose performance sees her replace Vera van Pol in the top-scoring five this month.
13. (12) ITALY – 164.600
Giada Grisetti 14.100 12.850 13.500 12.700
Desiree Carofiglio 13.950 13.850 13.000 13.900
Clara Colombo 13.600 13.750 12.950 13.150
Sofia Busato 14.550 0.000 0.000 0.000
Lara Mori 13.550 13.250 13.800 13.800
164.600 42.600 40.850 40.300 40.850
I’d classify Italy’s 12-place finish at worlds as not bad given the squad that was sent, featuring exactly one of the people from this allegedly highest-scoring group.
14. (16) BELGIUM – 164.099
Axelle Klinckaert 13.850 13.450 13.550 13.400
Nina Derwael 13.750 15.350 13.766 13.400
Maellyse Brassart 13.700 13.000 13.550 12.833
Rune Hermans 0.000 13.500 12.850 12.550
Senna Deriks 13.650 13.150 12.200 12.250
164.099 41.300 42.300 40.866 39.633
Huge gains for Belgium came in October, pushing the team score up 2.5 points, so while yes Belgium would have liked to advance to the team final at worlds, it’s hard to classify that performance as anything other than a roaring success—both in the scores and the historic medal accomplishments.
15. (14) HUNGARY – 163.250
Zsofia Kovacs 13.800 13.900 13.900 13.000
Noemi Makra 13.200 13.600 12.200 12.800
Dorina Böczögö 13.600 13.400 13.200 13.300
Boglarka Devai 14.800 10.300 11.700 11.500
Nora Feher 12.850 13.750 13.600 12.650
163.250 42.200 41.250 40.700 39.100
16. (15) MEXICO – 162.383
Paulina Guerra 13.366 11.866 12.867 12.600
Ahtziri Sandoval 14.000 13.450 0.000 0.000
Alexa Moreno 14.633 12.867 12.900 13.200
Frida Esparza 13.933 13.900 13.567 13.333
Nicolle Castro 13.450 14.000 11.450 11.850
162.383 42.566 41.350 39.334 39.133
Mexico’s surge up the rankings after Pan Ams proved a little more realistic than initially thought as Mexico finished a solid 19th place as a team at worlds to advance to Stuttgart.
17. (20) ROMANIA – 161.598
Denisa Golgota 14.600 12.666 13.250 13.600
Maria Holbura 12.600 12.950 12.950 13.266
Ioana Crisan 13.400 13.100 13.533 13.250
Anamaria Ocolisan 14.300 12.250 11.800 12.900
Nica Ivanus 13.533 12.050 13.550 13.250
161.598 42.433 38.716 40.333 40.116
Romania hits all its routines in qualification to place 13th and will be over the moon about that—though the increase in Romania’s ranking here comes from scores earned during Romania’s annual psychedelic nationals, not from anything that happened at worlds.
18. (18) SWITZERLAND – 161.350
Ilaria Käslin 13.800 13.250 13.400 12.950
Giulia Steingruber 15.100 12.250 13.450 13.150
Stefanie Siegenthaler 13.450 13.300 12.650 11.950
Caterina Barloggio 0.000 13.000 12.900 12.400
Leonie Meier 13.850 12.633 12.400 13.200
161.350 42.750 39.550 39.750 39.300
It’s still the residual Steingruber numbers that are keeping Switzerland afloat here, but it was mission accomplished at worlds, placing in the top 24.
19. (17) NORTH KOREA – 161.041
Pyon Rye Yong 14.300 12.900 12.750 12.450
Kim Su Jong 14.300 13.500 13.400 13.025

2 thoughts on “National Team Rankings – November 2018”

  1. The first 24 are exactly the 24 that qualified to next year’s Worlds. You can predict gymnastics!!

  2. Algeria’s team score (and rating) is off. I noticed because Dominican Republic is ranked lower but they have higher scores on all 4 events.
