Mercedez Sanchez? What does it mean it someone has never competed? Is there a reason to be on the team without competing? Serious question, – new to collage gymnastic. All my fantasy UCLA women got/have injuries this last meet!

UCLA has a history of taking a number of walk-ons who realistically are unlikely to see any competition time. Most of them either find other interests and disappear from the roster after a year or two, or they become team managers, which allows them to stay involved with the team. UCLA seems to have trimmed its walk-on base in the last couple of seasons, so Mercedes Sanchez is the one non-contributing walk-on who is still sticking around. There’s no practical reason to stick around on the coattails of a team you’ll never contribute to, true, but I’m sure at this point most of her friends are on the team, and it’s probably a socially fulfilling experience. UCLA also pays for travel to almost every meet for even its walk-ons, so there’s that benefit as well, for someone who enjoys travel.
Yes, there is always a possibility that a walk-on sees competition late in their career, especially if a team has multiple injuries/retirements. Idk anything about Sanchez, but if she has shown exhibition, then her routines could be usable if needed. And she could continue to improve and earn a lineup spot over others.
A good example is Jasmine Arnold, who as a senior at Georgia last year was a mainstay on the beam/floor lineups when options were thin. A team never knows when it will have to reach into its depth to fill lineups, imo it is always an advantage to have that depth.
Yup. Sonya Meraz, Janay Honest, Brielle Nguyen, and Gracie Kramer are examples of recent productive walk-ons at UCLA. Definitely useful to balance out the risk UCLA takes with injured or over-worked elites.
In Sanchez’s case, though, literally most of the team would have to be injured or suspended in order for her to see any competition time. (Most walk-ons in this position realize this either going in or no later than the second season, when new batches of freshman come in and make lineups immediately.) It’s not that her exhibitions were bad, but a team of this quality and depth won’t use her 9.6-9.7s unless it gets really desperate. She would likely have seen competition time with many teams further down in the rankings. But at UCLA, she only pays in-state tuition, and she gets to travel around the country, room with Olympians, and bag a national championship trophy (albeit one she didn’t earn) for her shelf, so there’s still incentive to stick around, from the gymnast’s perspective.
Actually a walk-on at UCLA did ‘earn’ her piece of the NCAA national championship trophy… Granted, she didn’t compete, but she was still a contributing member of the team, moving mats, helping the competitors in practice, whatever else the coaches needed/asked of her and there’s a good chance she is/was close to one of the competitors to help them mentally (notice the gymnasts who stand near beam or floor as support – often it’s different team members for different gymnasts).

There are definitely walk-ons who have earned their trophies, not necessarily by having competed in the Super Six final meet itself. Sonya Meraz, for example, contributed scores earlier in the season and was a viable backup for every event that night. After all, if she’d gone in and hit per her usual, they would probably still have won. Not sure you can really say the same for someone who just moves mats and cheerleads and has never competed for the team. In that case, the analogy to a football team cheerleader is pretty accurate. (No offense intended.)
I don’t think the walk-ons who are on the roster but have never competed (Sanchez, Poston) spend their time moving mats – they spend their time doing the same trainings and conditioning as the competing gymnasts in hopes of breaking into the lineups. So it seems unfair and a little harsh to compare them to cheerleaders.
The support crew – many of whom are former walk-ons (and former scholarship gymnasts) play that role.
Also, most walk on (not sure how UCLA does it) are practicing every day and doing all the strength with the rest of the team. They are constantly told that they need to be mentally ready because if anyone gets hurt they will be called on. It is very hard mentally to do it day in and day out without seeing the “rewards” but they usually end up getting called on at least once so while they don’t look to be contributing the team needs to know there is some sort of back up. It really sucks to be a walk on in that sense. But most teams don’t have the crazy depth that UCLA does so that’s why walk on are so important to most teams.
Many walk-ons, like Meraz, definitely have the incentive and potential to break into lineups. At UCLA, it’s less so, just because they have SO much depth and take SO many walk-ons (like Sanchez and others who retired) who don’t end up being viable. But Poston will probably break into the vault lineup this season! 🙂

If you didn’t happen to look at the ‘completed’ apparatus right AFTER such an announcement, then you missed the exhibitions.

Margzetta Frazier’s exhibition floor routine received a lot of arena buzz/applause and can be seen in a fan Youtube fan video entitled “Margzetta Frazier 2019 Floor Exhibition vs Nebraska”. She portrays a runway model to the music of Kevin Aviance’s “Din Daa Daa”. If/when this FX makes an in-season meet broadcast, could it become a possible future viral routine??

I imagine they will get her onto at least three, and are easing her into competition to avoid a Nia freshman situation where they put her in everything initially and her mental game was overwhelmed and never really hit her stride the whole year.
But, yes, please get Marz on vault!!!! She’d be great on floor as well, but is far more needed on vault, as there are plenty of strong floor options.
Mary Korlin-Downs from Minnesota did compete on BB on week 1, but unfortunately was injured mid-routine (was spotted with ice on her knee later) and couldn’t complete the routine and received a score of 0. I’m confused as to why it was a score of 0 and not a score for what she did, like when Kennedy Baker scored a 2.something last year. Maybe she did so little that she didn’t have any elements?

I’ve been wondering about this score forever! Thanks for the info. I had assumed a 0 meant she broke some sort of rule, like starting before the judges saluted. It’s interesting like you said that she got a 0 for a failed routine instead of a 2 or a 6 or what have you.
Yeah it’s weird because I just watched what little I could see of the video (the video was focused on ASU as the home team so there were only glimpses of Minnesota on beam) but you could see her fall off on her series and then she stayed down for a little while, the coach walked over and then she presented. I would think that would be enough to get a score of some sort. Not that it would have mattered to Minnesota’s score overall but it just bothers me from a “what are the rules?” perspective
When a gymnast starts before the judges give her the signal it’s a .5 deduction, same as a fall.
I need Showers in OU’s beam lineup for that straight hop full. Maybe KJ could at least put her in for the events that are televised on sec/pac 12 networks. Pretty please…
Showers was supposed to be in the beam lineup but was pulled last minute for Dowell. I wonder if maybe she was injured after floor?
Or KJ knows her athlete’s mental makeup and removed Showers from the beam lineup after she had the fall on floor. It could’ve been a minor injury but it could have also been Showers was mentally beating herself up for the fall and KJ decided it was best to remove her since she wouldn’t be focused.

Well, it was confirmed by the commentators on this week’s meet that Showers tweaked her knee last week. Guess the injury speculation was also some “intelligent speculation” 😉

Quick note – Kyana George definitely competed UB in addition to VT and FX in the LSU v. Cal meet. I just watched it, and while the commentators kept calling her Maya Bordas (possibly because Cal changed the UB lineups last minute?) that was definitely George on the UB.
