It’s one of our better Sundays. This is a very solid slate. I’ll be starting with Iowa and Michigan and then going straight through.

Abby Heiskell is going to be back on two events for Michigan today. Still no vault for McLean.

Warmups underway in Michigan.

Rotation 1

Heiskell – VT – Michigan – comes up a bit short on her debut vault, lunge forward, nearly was able to hold the stick, nice block. 9.600

Kaji – UB – Iowa – good toe point in that jaeger – pak, serious straddle position there, solid cast hs, verticals – DLO, good height, hop forward. 9.750

Welp, mute time.

Maxim – VT – Michigan – Tsuk 1/2, her best of the year, pretty vault and held the stick – just a little pike, not much to take. 9.800 is tight for that. Should have been in the higher 9.8s.

WHY ARE YOU RECAPPING AN OLD BASKETBALL GAME?

Hartzler – UB – Iowa – piked jaeger, strong – small arch in subsequent cast – straddle back, just a touch short on a couple verticals – giant full to double tuck, holds the stick with a bend. 9.775

Osman – VT – Michigan – hop back on her full, a little direction and some foot form in the air, but fine. 9.750

Sullivan – UB – Iowa – Ray, solid, a little leg form – cast hs, a bit of an arch – bail – giant full to double tuck, good hold on that stick. 9.800

Karas – VT – Michigan – great power on her full as always, the same hop back we’ve been seeing on her full this year. Expect they’ll want to get her 1.5 back for the end of the year. 9.775

Kampschroeder – UB – Iowa – shortish first hs – great tkatchev amplitude and toe point – toe to pak, super crazy legs in the air and peels off trying to catch the pak.

Brenner – VT – Michigan – a strong 1.5 for her, smaller hop forward, knees throughout. 9.850

Chow – UB – Iowa – good first hs – great height on Ray – pak was really high, just a bit of legs as she caught – giant full to double tuck to finish, stuck. Good work. 9.800

Wojcik – VT – Michigan – 1.5, not a stick this time, she tried to sell it for a second, but did step-salute forward quickly out of it. Otherwise great obviously. 9.825 is still quite low for that comparatively.

Kranitz – UB – Iowa – 1/2 turn to high jaeger, – bail, some leg break and short of vertical position – small leg break in 1/2 turn into double front, cowboy but hit with a small hop. 9.825

After 1: Michigan 49.000, Iowa 49.000

Michigan will be overall pleased with that vault rotation. Didn’t quite have the landings, but Maxim needs to stay in that lineup is she’s sticking a 10.0 start like that. Small hops overall. Will need to control those fulls more as we go to start closer to the 9.8s but will ideally have 1.5s from Karas and McLean at some point to join the freshmen, so the fulls will be less important.

Iowa is able to drop the fall on bars, a big deal. Some leg form, some body positions and handstands, but five usable routines there. Highlight in those last routines was the massive amplitude on their same-bar releases. Bars scores looser than vault so far, so we’ll see how that continues in the second rotation.

Rotation 2

Hartzler – VT – Iowa – nice power on her full, fairly sizable hop back

Mariani – UB – Michigan good first hs – clear hip to a super high tkatchev, some mushy legs – bail, position looks solid – FTDT, stuck landing. Nice. 9.875

Chow – VT – Iowa – also a bounce back on her full, looked larger than Hartzler’s, some pike.

Maxim – UB – arch on an early handstand on a toe on, pulled it back – hit tkatchev, once again good height but some knees – and overshoot – dinishes with a super pretty DLO and holds to stick the landing. 9.800

Sullivan – VT – Iowa – tries to hold a stick on a Y1/2 but step-salutes out of it, still really nice control on the landing, probably a bit of a deduction for dynamics

Farley – UB – Michigan – 1/2 into piekd jaeger, nice height – hitting hs positions – a little floppy in bail in the air but hits her vertical – 1/2 into double front, solid height, just a bit of legs apart and a small step. 9.850

Guerin – VT – Iowa – bounce-a-tron landing on her full, large bound back and to the side, super fast and more than enough power. 9.750

Karas – UB – Michigan – toe on to toe shap to bail, hits vertical on that bail, maybe a little body angle on catch -strong hs positions – finishes DLO, stuck. Very good showing. 9.950

Carlson – VT – Iowa – comes in pretty crooked onto the table on her full – a bit of pike and probably a hop, I mean most of these routines are out of shot and I’m about to die.

Brenner – UB – Michigan – jaeger, good height, a bit of elbows on catch – bail, hit, small hip angle – they’ve worked on these final cast hs, strong – DLO, very small hop. 9.875

Killian – VT – Iowa – best distance and direction among their fulls, another bounce back.

Wojcik – UB – Michigan – toe 1/2 a little crooked into piked jaeger, nicely done – good hs – bail is pretty crisp – hs very precise throughout – DLO, open body position, sticks landing. This was a solid rotation for everyone. 9.950

After 2: Michigan 98.500, Iowa 97.775

Bars scores remained consistently looser than the vault scores, Michigan getting up to 49.500 for its rotation, one that was quite solid particularly from Karas and Wojcik, but also got some fancy numbers in there. A major difference being how little they gave away in their cast handstands.

I was a bit worried about Iowa’s vaulting this season, so to see them put out six 9.950s, hit and reasonable, was important. Too many bounces to get the scores, but not a bad rotation.

Rotation 3

Farley – BB – Michigan – bhs loso loso series, impressed she kept it on because from this angle you could see how wonky she was getting in the air, still some knee form to take, but no checks – 1.5 turn, excellent – side aerial to split, quite secure – gainer pike, sticks with legs apart in the air. 9.900

Gilchrist – FX – Iowa – front 2/1 first pass, lands a bit deep with a some knees but definitely around – 1.5 to front pike, comes in just a tad short but fine – theme of these routine is grabbing boulders and then breaking them with your giant fists I think – rudi, a bit of a bounce. Will face amplitude deductions here, but solid landings overall. 9.775

Osman – BB – Michigan – bhs loso series, pretty solid extension, just a smallll lean – punch front, leg-up check, did not get combination into beat jump – split jump to wolf jump full, also a bit of a pause in combination – gainer full, stuck. Good elements. We’ll see how they evaluate rhythm. 9.825. Everyone was fine with it. Actually even got bumped up to a 9.875.

Sullivan – FX – Iowa – front tuck through to 2.5, good controlled step out as well – double tuck, chest up, just a little loose legs in these passes – this theme is my arms are possess by an elbow ghost and if I shake it off and hide I will be safe to rule – a bit low on some dance elements.

Karas – BB – Michigan – bhs loso, small lean, breaks connection to beat jump – switch split jump to pike jump, great height and hit positions – switch leg gainer loso to beat jump, really quick combination, solid – rudi dismount, small slide back. Good one.

Killian – FX – Iowa – pulls out a triple full first pass – some legs and a lunge back, got it around – finishes double tuck with a bounce back.

Funk – BB – Michigan – bhs loso, secure, good height, a bit of knees – switch side 1/4, fabulous, great lift and solid, clear landing position – beat to straddle 1/1, well done – side aerial to full, stuck, excellent.

Kaji – FX – Iowa – 1.5 through to double tuck, very solid – double pike, also efficient form, a little slide back – theme is THE GNATS OH GOD THE GNATS WHY  – the other theme is we’re only doing two passes because we can and why not

Wojcik – BB – Michigan – aerial to beat jump with a check, lean to the side – switch to split, good extension – bhs loso series, super solid – cat leap to side aerial, good as well, pretty much perfect following that early balance check – 1.5, stuck. 9.925

Guerin – FX – Iowa – good chest-up position landing on the full-in – slide back – front tuck through to double tuck, secure, chest a little farther down but not bad –

Mariani – BB – Michigan – side aerial to split jump to straddle 1/4, good elements, I’d say the aerial wasn’t connected into the split – beat to switch side – bhs loso, break with a leg up check and a lean to save it – 1.5, stuck. Probably the drop score with that error, but still a strong rotation.

Castle – FX – Iowa – double pike, secure landing, chest down – wolf hop full to switch side, wolf hop a little short of the full rotation – rudi, slide back, a bit of legs – 1.5 to layout, with some mushy legs and a lunge forward and possible OOB.

After 3: Michigan 147.975, Iowa 146.825

Really strong beam from Michigan, their best rotation of the three so far. Most of them were right on with no checks and stuck dismounts. This has no business not being Michigan’s 197 meet today because they’re hitting and, in the last two rotations, the judges have been here for them.

Iowa will also be thrilled to pieces by how close they are to 196 pace going to beam. Took advantage of the option for two-pass routines there. Especially when it feels like hitting your tumbling passes is all anyone is watching in floor scoring, minimizing the number of tumbling passes is a smart score strategy.

This is a calling the gymnasts “players” kind of broadcast.

Rotation 4

Carlson – BB – hit loso series – switch to straddle 1/4, small check – STOP TALKING ABOUT NOTHING – split to loso combo, arm wave correction – bhs 1.5 dismount, step back. Some things, but good hit. 9.850

Osman – FX – Michigan – front tuck throught o double tuck, good chest up position, smaller bounce back – switch side to popa, a little overturned on switch side, but not too much, good 180s – rudi, a little crazy landing with a bounce back and to the side – double pike, nice control there, just a bit of chest down. 9.825

Gilchrist – BB – Iowa – bhs to lay pike attempt, fall – well off line in the air – switch to split, short back leg – hitch kick to side aerial, large bend at the hips break – our dude thinks this is Carlson because he literally jabbered through her whole routine – gainer pike, stuck.

Heiskell – FX – Michigan – comes in short on her opening double back with a lunge forward to save it – a bit more control on the double pike, but still a deep landing. She’s been out for the first half of the season, so you can see she’s still in a little January form – 1.5 to front tuck, hit. 9.675

Killian – BB – Iowa – bhs to loso – punch front with a check to the side – switch to split 3/4, check and pretty well short of split position on both – 2/1 with hop back. 9.800.

Scores getting really high here now.

Brenner – FX – Michigan – full-in, secure landing, chest down – 2.5 to front tuck, a bit of knees and a dance out but solid control – double pike, controlled step back, a bit too much legs apart there. 9.875

Kaji – BB – Iowa – bhs loso series, better lift – secure – cat leap to side aerial, falls. Damn. This was a huge opportunity for Iowa to get a 196, but counting a fall on beam now. switch to split, well hit positions – aerial, good save with an arm wave since one foot was nearly entirely off the beam – gainer pike, stuck

McLean – FX – Michigan – double tuck from round off, well controlled, good power of course – front lay to front full – split leap 1/1 to popa, gets up to those split positions – double pike, bounce back. Strong set. 9.900

Vance – BB – Iowa – bhs loso series, hit, knee deductions – free round off, hit – switch to straddle 1/4, lean forward on landing, a couple checks here and some leg positions on dance – side aerial to full dismount, hop back. A necessary hit.

Wojcik – FX – Michigan – double pike, great form, small slide back – split leap full to wolf jump full, great split full, toes pointed and clear finish position – front 2/1 to front pike, a bit short with a step back – rudi to straddle jump, well controlled

Chow – BB – Iowa – bhs to lay-pike series, very secure landing – large check on full turn, a lean and a leg up – side aerial to sissone, hit solidly – switch 1/2 to split, pretty quick in connection and the split jump was solid – gainer pike, has to lean pretty far to try to hold that stick, though she did hold it.

Karas – FX – Michigan – double arabian, too much on it this time with a lunge-slide forward – 1.5 to half, still a little bouncy but great form – double pike, controlled landing, chest down. 9.925

FINAL: Michigan 197.350, Iowa 195.350

Iowa goes into the 195s despite counting that fall on beam, so they will still take this as a road score. Michigan finally gets into the 197s, still some landings to clean up on vault and floor to challenge the better parts of the top 10, but that beam rotation was a highlight, especially Funk and Wojcik. And for bars, beam, and floor, Michigan doesn’t really have any complaints about getting underscored because this was not a tightly evaluated meet at all.

You get a half-hour break until Oklahoma and Denver.

DELAY ALERT: Denver/Oklahoma will start later than expected due to equipment problems.

Gymnastics! You were timed out so perfectly today, and now…not.

Just finishing up the touch warmup now.

No Brenna on bars for Oklahoma. Per Tara, who is at the meet, she had a nasty fall on bars in warmup which was related to our equipment delay.

Rotation 1

Ruiz – VT – full, small hop back, a piked position and will get deducted for not much dynamics, kept pretty close to the table there. 9.750

Webb – UB – OU – good first hs – pak, lovely and high 0 toe Shap 1/2, keeps legs together pretty well – toe 1/2 to double front 1/2 out, stuck with a lean. One of her strong ones. 9.900

Schou – VT – Denver – full with a very large bounce back – chest up better than Ruiz with more distance, but more than a tenth on the hop back. 9.725

Marks – UB – OU – toe on to toe Shap, good legs – bail is short of vertical, rushes a little on her final cast hs – FTDT, good, small step. A few more things than in Webb’s routine, but still solid. 9.850

Chesnok – VT – DU – medium sized hop back on her full, good direction and chest up, just a bit of pike. 9.825

Thomas – UB – OU – toe 1/2, good position – into jaeger, controlled – strong vertical position on bail – a little short on final cast hs – DLO, overcooks it a bit with a .1 step back. 9.850

Sundstrom – VT – DU – bounce back on her full, better amplitude and keeps her layout position a little more than the first couple. 9.825

Lehrmann – UB – OU – 1/2 turn into her usual super high jaeger – cast handstands look solid – a little loose back on catching bail – FTDT, stuck with a little leg stagger. Very clean again. A little moment on the bail, one borderline hs, but strong. 9.875

Karr – VT – DU – her usual good 1.5, medium hop forward this time – good form, just a bit of direction and the hop. 9.850

Nichols – UB – OU – Ray a little close this time with some elbows but connects well into Pak, some leg break on that Pak – Toe shap 1/2 is excellent – DLO, not her very highest but sticks it anyway. 9.975 is too high for that one. It wasn’t one of her 10s to me, particularly because of the catch on the Ray.

Brown – VT – DU – gorgeous 1.5 from her, similar-sized hop forward to Karr, but stronger in the direction and the layout position, so should get a higher number. That can be 10-worthy with a stick. 9.875

OU will not put Trautman up on bars because everyone is already 9.850 or higher

Glynn does her Tsuk 1/1 in exhibition, larger bounce back and some piking, but better chest up than on a lot of Tsuk 1/1s.

After 1: Oklahoma 49.450, Denver 49.125

Not Oklahoma’s very cleanest bars rotation, and Brenna’s absence was very noticeable with just five routines going, but a 49.450 is nothing to sneeze at. Pretty clean work from everyone. Webb’s leadoff routine was the highlight set for me there.

Vault is not typically Denver’s good score, so they’ll be OK with a 49.1. Got good hit 1.5s from Karr and Brown, need a little more control on those fulls to continue getting comfortably into the 49s because the first four vaults could all have been put in the 9.7s.

Dowell update: not competing today

Update: I’m not using the stream. Watching on TV. But sounds like everyone is having problems with the stream, which SUCKS for a $$$ feed.

Neither Nichols nor Dowell in the vault lineup. If any team can absorb that, it’s OU, but that will be interesting.

Rotation 2

Lehrmann – VT – OU – nice 1.5, similar to what we’ve been seeing from her – small hop forward, but good body position. 9.875

Kern – UB – DU – nice jaeger – bail, solid vertical position – hitting hs well – DLO, stuck landing, goes straight up and not so much out, but a really efficient set. Nice form and handstands, not a lot of amplitude, but quite clean. 9.875

Webb – VT – OU – pops up but not as far out on her 1.5 this time, comes in a bit short on her 1/5 with a step back, small step – a bit more knees than Lehrmann. 9.825

Ruiz – Ub – SU – giant full to tkatchev, not the biggest tkatchev but really good position on giant full, a bit short of vertical on bail but good cast hs – DLO, sticks it with the smallest lean to try to hold it, and she does.

Degouveia – VT – OU – Y1.5 – strong 1.5, best distance so far and clean shape, medium hop forward but not much else to take – a little bit of legs apart on block but brings them together well. 9.875

Sundstrom – UB – DU – clear hip to tkatcehv, caught, not the floatiest tkatchev but gets the job done – also a little short on her bail position – one iffy hs there at the end – DLO, comes up short with a larger lunge forward.

Stern – VT – OU – that’s her best 1.5 of the year – she also has that hop forward and not as much distance as someone like Degouveia, but much better landing control. Some knees. 9.875 (too close to teh others)

Glynn – UB – DU – clear hip to girnger, great legs together – really rushes her next cast hs – hits bail well, good vertical – shortish final cast hs – FTDT, pulls out the stick strongly

Trautman – VT – OU – good height on her 1.5, smallest hop forward of the group and that little bit of knees but could still get away with 9.900. Does 9.900

Brown – UB – DU – toe Shap to pak, good height, legs together – nice cat on low – Shap 1/2, legs together there as well – hitting hs – DLO, pretty in the air but a hop back. Lovely work.

Schoepfer – VT – OU – does a full, great landing, basically stuck it, though a little short in distance and some piking, so probably the low score for them.

Karr – UB – DU – giant full to another excellent gienger with legs together throughout, connected to overshoot with a little too much pike – fab handstands, DLO, stuck. Really strong routine. 9.925

Broadhurst exhibition for Denver. not quite there on the hs but a really believable routine for the lineup.

After 2: Oklahoma 98.800, Denver 98.500

Some really pretty work from Denver there on bars, gaining a hair on Oklahoma in the second rotation. Several legitimate 9.9s in that lineup and working through some iffy sets in the middle of the lineup so that it didn’t show in the final number. Kern, Karr, and Brown were chef kissing fingers.

Pretty impressive that Oklahoma can throw out 5 10.0 starts without Nichols or Dowell in the lineup, and a good performance for 49.350, though one that was clearly missing the 9.9itude from those stars since most of the others were giving away .1s on landing. They didn’t have the sticks to get much higher today. Stern making an argument that she could supplant Webb in that lineup with her vault today.

Oklahoma using Draper, Lapinta, and Stern on floor today, so this is turning into an exploring depth road meet, even if the intention didn’t start out that way.

Rotation 3

Brown – BB – DU – high kickover front into bhs series, pretty quickly done – switch to split, improving on those positions, almost there – aerial, a little adjustment – some pausing and missed connection out of her aerial – gainer full, stuck, nice position. 9.850. Apparently got her SV

Draper – FX – OU – whip 1/2 to rudi, good, controls that front foot, medium height – front full to front full, a little bit of knees, control is good – switch to switch 1/2, gets there. 9.850

Ruiz – BB – DU – hitch kick to switch side, a little crooked on switch side position – bhs loso, secure pass, somewhat tight in the hips – side aerial to split, good split position – gainer pike, short with a hop forward. 9.800

Webb – FX – OU – nice front 2/1, gets it around comfortably – 1.5 to front full, also controlled well – split leap full to split jump 1/1, around, the feet are still killing me (and Kathy probably), but it’s well done – rudi, also controlled, a bit of chest down. Strong showing. 9.900

These scores for these floor hits are more reasonable than the crazy meet last week at least. Webb’s routine was stronger this week.

Sundstrom – BB – DU – bhs loso series, nice and secure from her as well – interstitial cartwheel – some pauses – switch to switch 1/2 attempt, didn’t quite get it around, was off balance and falls, but at least it was hilarious looking as one of her legs got hooked on the beam as she fell.

Degouveia – FX – OU – front 2/1 first pass, has to slide forward out of it a little this time – good height on her front layout into front full – switch 1/2 and popa, lovely height and 180 positions – 1.5 to front full, strong stick there, just a bit of knees in the front full. 9.875

Vasquez – BB – DU – aerial through to bhs loso, serving some 2012 elite realness, smallllest slide back – switch to split combination, perfect positions – y spin, and actually pretty real position for college – sissone, lovely – side aerial to full, small step. Pretty routine. Also serving some 2012 elite realness in the rhythm, though, so something to keep in mind as we go. 9.925.

LaPinta – FX – OU – 3/1, pretty much gets it around, a bounce back on landing, maybe a little under – front full to front layout, arches that front layout around – split leap full was at quite an angle, not reaching 180, but the jump was better – double tuck, comes up short with a step forward. 9.800 is wayyyy too close to the other scores for that one.

Karr – BB – DU – side aerial to bhs series, secure, takes that the whole length of the beam – hitch kick to side somi, controls very well to bring that arm down and a void a check – beat to split jump 1/1, a little under on the split position and rotation – crazy-high 1.5 dismount, stuck. 9.950

Trautman – FX – OU – great high DLO, chest up, controlled landing – front lay to front 1/1 to split jump, excellent positions and amplitude – split leap full to popa, a little bouncy  in the combination and landings, so it look a little indistinct – double tuck, chest up, smallest adjustment. 9.925

Schou – BB – DU – aerial through to bhs loso series, well controlled – sissone, pretty – beat jump to sheep, great height on beat, sheep has solid closure, some hip angle to deduct – gainer pike, stuck. Another pretty set. The second 1/2 of this Denver beam lineup was bonkers good. 9.950

Stern – FX – OU – double pike, step back a little too far, just does keep that heel up to stay in bounds – front lay to 1/2, some loose form on the layout – wolf hop 3/4 to wolf leap 3/4, which was an odd looking combination and not really all the way around – double tuck, controls the landing, but deep in the knees

Loper exhibition beam for Denver. Her series serves Wevers realness with an aerial to side aerial. Won’t get credit for it though.

After 3: Oklahoma 148.150, Denver 147.975

Yeah guys. We’re within two tenths, with Denver going to floor and Oklahoma going to beam.

Denver closes the gap. Definitely got some benefit of the doubt on those early routines, but the final three were exceptional. Oklahoma missed Nichols and Dowell in that floor rotation. It was still good. Webb, Degouveia, Trautman, strong showings from all of them, but this was not peak Oklahoma floor.

UCLA/Washington will also get started during this final rotation, but OU/DU is where it’s at right now.

Schoepfer in on beam. Nichols is there. No Dowell or Showers.

Rotation 4

KJ’s leadoff beam routine of coaching Trautman before her beam routine goes 9.975.

Trautman – BB – OU – bhs loso series, very secure, good extended legs – cat leap to switch side, nice and high – kickover front pike, super high, kind of too high as she has to step forward out of it – 1.5, small hop. Very strong. 9.825

Sundstrom – FX – DU – double tuck, comes in forward with a step – front lay to front full, hit, little step adjustment – switch 1/2 to wolf jump full, well completed, correct – switch 1/1. 9.850 is a little high.

Schoepfer – BB – OU – bhs bhs loso series is secure, a bit softer in the knees than your typical OU series – switch to straddle 1/4, some back leg – 1.5, holds the stick with a lean. 9.875. Not really clear on how that routine was better than Trautman’s? Those two scores should be switched.

Glynn – FX – DU – she has only done exo thus far – doubel pike, lovely, good toes and position – switch side to popa to popa, got a little off in landing position toward the end, but strong 180s – really struggles on final pass, 1.5 to front tuck, barely got anything on front tuck and lands it in near butt-scraping position – double tuck final pass, hit with a bit of a slide. 9.550

Woodard – BB – OU – side aerial to bhs series, strong, some knee in that bhs but didn’t look as obvious from this angle – kickover front, very solid – switch to split, nice switch, a touch of back leg on the split – I swear the commentator just said “looks like she’s boning the beam up there” – sticks full twist dismount. Solid. 9.950. Well now.

Ruiz – FX – DU – double tuck, good chest up, jsut a bit of a slide – switch side to popa, basically there – 1.5 to front tuck, also struggles on that pass, not as much as Glynn, but came in low on that front tuck with a bit of a squat – double pike is better, controlled landing. 9.750

Lehrmann – BB – OU – bhs to loso to korbut, quite smooth and clean this week, well done – cat leap to switch side, maybe a little step but good position horizontal – aerial, hit – gainer full, holds the stick. Another excellent one. 9.925

Schou – FX – DU – front 2/1, good, controls the step out, just that little bit of knees we tend to see on front 2/1s – 1.5 to layout, pulls out the layout though did overcook the 1.5 and had to arch around the layout – rudi final pass. 9.900

Webb – BB – OU – bhs loso and falls. Surprising. No chance to save. cat leap to aerial, hit well – has the luxury to drop this – finishes side aerial to full with a little bounce in place.

Karr – FX – DU – double pike, controls the step back well – 1.5 to front full, gets it comfortably around, controlled step – split leap full tand wolf full, no trouble – rudi, good height, a bit of a slide. Nice routine. 9.925

UCLA/Washington is underway. Super clean bars hit from Frazier. Just a small slide on landing. 9.875

Nichols – BB – OU – aerial to split, exceptional – bhs loso, very secure, good extension – switch through to split leap – 1.5 dismount, stuck. I mean basically perfect. 9.975

Hano hits for UCLA in the second position, but enough form that they’ll want to drop it. Or they would have if it hadn’t scored 9.850 somehow? Kooyman having more form problems in the third position, also an extra swing and near fall on landing.

Brown – FX – DU – gignatic DLO, a little bounce, but soo sooo high and great chest up – 1.5 to layout to sissone, excellent form on both tumbling and dance – double pike, crazy high and stuck. Excellent finish to that rotation.

Cool how Oklahoma went 197.700 for an “off” meet.

Flatley – UB – UCLA – short first hs – 1/2 turn to jaeger, a little leg break – toe on to bail, good bail position – short final cast hs – DLO, perfect dismount and stuck.

It’s 10.000 for Lynnzee Brown on floor to finish the meet. You could tell they were itching for it. Wasn’t a 10 for me because of the DLO landing control, but a fantastic routine.

Good full from Roberson of Washington – nice form, two small steps back.

FINAL: OKlahoma 197.700, Denver 197.400

Kocian – UB – UCLA – stalder Shap, excellent, into Pak, a bit of a leg break there – nice 1/2 turn position on low – kind of short on final cast hs but smooth, good stick on FTDT. A nice one. 9.925

Thompson – VT – Washington – good height on her full, a bounce back this time

Ross – UB – UCLA – good first hs – toe shap to bail, perfect – toe shoot, excellent – small arch on cast hs on high bar, pulls it back – DLO, not a stick this time, a little step with an arm wave. 9.875

After 1: UCLA 49.375, Washington 48.875

First, some final thoughts on OU and DU. It certainly wasn’t a full strength Oklahoma (so nice to go 197.700 with you B+ squad), but they really didn’t arrive until beam, which had some phenomenal routines. The other events were good enough because Oklahoma but not great. Denver had a really strong performance overall, particularly in those last couple routines of the bars, beam, and floor lineups, which are going to compete with any team. if this meet were in Oklahoma, it would not have been this close, but Denver isn’t leaving the top 10 any time soon.

UCLA not with a full strength bars lineup without Anna Glenn, so we saw some form problems in the middle there. Kyla wasn’t as clean as usual for 9.875, but Frazier and Kocian were quite strong.

Stanford just broke 49 on bars against Arizona State, you guys. I am wrought low.

Rotation 2

Poston in for Kramer in the vault lineup at the last second because UCLA. Val is just doing a dance party about it and bullying the crowd into standing up.

Tratz – VT – UCLA – bounce back on her full, not the control they wanted – her usual great distance, a little pike. 9.750. Accurate, but we’re clearly not at home anymore.

Nelson – UB – Washington – 1/2 into fab jaeger, super high, good toes – pak, solid legs – short final cast hs and rushed – giant full (some legs) to double tuck, step back. 9.775

Dennis – VT UCLA -fantastically high full as always – good form, just a little bounce in place. 9.875

Washington – UB – Wash – clear hip to gienger  – great legs together into overshoot, fab body shape in that whole connection – FTDT dismount, a little ragged in the legs and a hop to the side. 9.800

Wrigth – VT – UCLA – 1.5, better than last week – small pace forward and just a bit of knees, on line with what we saw on her first two vaults of the year. 9.825

Thompson – UB – Washington – 1/2 turn to jaeger, very close – muscles up out of it, didn’t have the swing – good bail position – short cast hs on high – FTDT, step back. 9.725

Hano – VT – UCLA – 1.5 – a solid hit, small hop to the side (and a little bit back), usable score. 9.850

Riley – UB – UW – a bit short on first hs – tow shap to bail, nice legs together, a bit short of vertical on bail – will get a .05 for her final cast – DLO, excellent stick

Ross – VT- UCLA – 1.5 – muccccch better. 1.5 is back? Stuck landing, just a bit deep in the knees to find her stick, awesome and wonderful

Kyla gets a 10.

Sweeties no. I would have been fine with 9.950, but that bit of deepness in the landing is not a 10 for me. And the vault judging was doing so well too.

Roberson on UB overshoots her stomach right onto the low bar and has to stop there. Fall equivalent.

Poston – VT – UCLA – bails out of her handspring pike 1/2 and does a handspring front tuck with a marathon run out of it and nearly into the crowd. So UCLA will go 49.300 on vault.

Copiak – UB – UW – piked jaeger to overshoot, solid and maintains good straight position on overshoot – some loose back on cast hs positions – FTDT with a hop back

Technical difficulties during the interview with Val. “I can’t hear anything.” But also I secretly really hope she was just pretending.

After 2: UCLA 98.675, Washington 97.850

A pretty UCLA vault rotation, in that the scores weren’t really there because of some struggle landing hops, but then also Kyla got a 10. Riley the highlight for Washington there for a bars rotation with some really strong moments (I particularly enjoy their attention to position on overshoots to low bar, where most teams are like ALL THE PIKING AND LEG BREAKS). Handstands and landings, handstands and landings.

Annnnd Stanford just counted a fall on vault after breaking 49 on bars. MOST STANFORD THING EVER.

Rotation 3

Rose – BB – UW – jump to split mount – aerial to aerial series, balance check with a lean and an arm wave – switch to beat, great height and split – lone bhs to get her bwd requirement – cat leap to side aerial to tuck full, stuck. Same about the larger check on series because the rest was perfect. 9.700

Kramer – VT – UCLA – front 2/1 to front pike, does well to pull it out this week as went straight up on the front pike, a little deduction – 1.5 to layout, super clean, great straight body position throughout – switch side to popa, hits her 180s – rudi to extension jump, clean. Final two passes were great. 9.875

Riley – BB – UW – bhs loso with an arm wave an a step back to keep herself together – full turn with a lean – split jump to straddle 1/4, great straddle position – split to loso, a little arm wave into beat jump – 1.5, stuck. She’s getting more comfortable there, still some leans but not as large. 9.750

Ross – FX – UCLA – whip to double tuck, chest up, controlled step, so much better on that pass – 1.5 to layout, maybe a little loose in layout but OK – switch 1/2 to popa to shushunova, good 180 positions, so glad they got rid of the Ferrari – double pike, controlled landing as well. One of her stronger floor routines. Chest up landings, easy endurance. 9.925

Washington – BB – UW – bhs loso series, a bit of an arm wave to avoid the check – switch side to straddle jump, hits her position and does well to keep the series going – side aerial to tuck full, tried to hold the stick with a big lean forward at the hips. 9.800

Let’s be careful about how we use the phrase “money shot” when Washington uses the money gun.

Tratz – FX – UCLA – full-in, solid landing today, very controlled, just a bit deep – 1.5 to front full, controls the step – switch ring to split leap full, hits her positions – double tuck, well short with chest down and a lunge forward. She still has one trouble pass every single week. 9.825

Brooks – BB – UW – kickover front to bhs series, kept it going well enough – aerial to beat, not super fast in connection, some soft knees in elements here and there – switch to stag to gainer full, hop back and leg separation. 9.800

Dennis – FX – UCLA – pike full in, big, not as controlled this week with a slide back – front full to front layout, does not have the control there either with a pretty large slide out – split positions nice as always – double tuck, good chest up, small slide back. Still gets 9.900. Her 9.925 was one of the very (very) few routine slast week I thought was more conservative because it was so strong. This one is high for me.

Copiak – BB – UW – excellent bhs loso series, right on, good extension – switch 1/2 with a check – side aerial to beat, good height, feet a little bit hither and thither and yon – 1.5, comes up short with a step back 9.800

Hano – FX – UCLA – nice control on DLO, but chest down as she keeps the stick – solid middle pass, a bit cleaner than last week – split leap full to wolf full, OK position, some feet flexion – you know those 1920s mermaids – double pike, just a slight slide. Getting there closer to last year’s level. 9.900

Roberson – BB – UW – switch to switch leg split jump, was a little off on the leap with a non-set leg but worked out well – loso loso combination but a large body wave balance check – gainer full, fab, stuck. 9.800

Ohashi – FX – UCLA – does the split-leg DLO, mayyyybe a bit of a slide this time or small front foot adjustment, but really strong, and the little bit of piking she has at the end when she does the split-leg but that you don’t really see because SPLIT LEG – a bit more travel than usual on her split jump in the middle pass but the skills clean and solid as usual – nice switch positions – front full to 1/2 to drop split, excellent, strong showing again. A landing thing or two.

10.000. This was not as strong the previous 10 for me. Not quite as crisp in either of the first two passes. I mean, yes, I never think anything is a 10, but I’m telling you what I think about these 10s.

UCLA suddenly has gone 49.600 on floor and has its second 10.000 of the meet. OK there now.

After 3: UCLA 148.275, Washington 146.800

Rotation 4

Nguyen – BB – UCLA – switch to split to beat, solid positions – aerial to loso series, a littttttllle slow in the combination with a half second to get herself right on – large break on side jump 1/2, bend forward at the hips – front full with a college stick. A hit, but not her strongest. 9.725

Cunningham – FX – UW – front tuck trhough to double tuck, nice chest up position, slide back – 1.5 to front pike, just a bit of feet – switch 1/2 to wolf full – double pike, really secure landing, just some chest down. 9.850

G Glenn – BB – UCLA – back in the lineup this week – bhs loso series with a leg-up wobble – aerial to split jump, another check there – switch to split jump, actually perfect – stuck gainer full. Getting back, nice second half, still a tentative first half. 9.775

Thompson – FX – UW – double tuck, a large bounce back – split leap 1.5, great height on it – front lay to front full, keeps extended pretty well with solid height – rudi, a bit of a slide there too. 9.800

One of my favorite things about Bart is that he kind of says Washington like a hillbilly, and it’s adorable.

Flatley – BB – UCLA – love that she does the dude-rings-hold-nod for her mount and gets half her own team pregnant – aerial to loso, keeps that series moving pretty well, smallest little foot adjustment – side aerial, brings that chest right up well – L turn to full turn, good L turn position – switch to split, fantastic – 1.5 deep landing with a hop back. 9.875 is a bit of a WE LOVE NORAH score, but most of it is so pretty even with that dismount

Washington – FX – UW – good high double tuck, slide – front lay to front will with an uncontrolled slide forward but great position in that layout – switch side to popa, excellent amplitude – stuck double pike, great final pass.

Other favorite thing about Bart: He enjoys MAYA WASHINGTON FROM WASHINGTON exactly as much as I do.

Dennis – BB – UCLA – aerial, comes up short with a leg-up wobble – redoes it with another check – no acro series, so this will have to be the drop score – switch to split with a little lean – 2/1 stuck. Not a very strong beam rotation for UCLA so far.

Roberson – FX – UW – front 2/1 to front tuck, some up short on front tuck with a stumble back – switch ring to wolf jump full, not quite all the way around in foot landing position – rudi to very high loso.

Ross – BB – UCLA – bhs loso series, right on, good extension as always – aerial to sissone, well executed – leg-out full turn – switch to split, hits her 180s – side aerial to full, stuck. Someone came to work for this beam rotation. 9.975

So bars was Kyla’s lowest score of the day.

That beam would have been the most realistic 10 of the day.

Hoffa – FX – UW – double pike, great height, just a baby slide – front lay to front full, good straight position – split leap full to wolf jump full, right around, high, this is very strong double tuck, secure. Very good one.

Ohashi – BB – UCLA – bhs bhs to layout with that little bit of feet apart in the air – switch to split, excellent – aerial through to bhs loso full twist, stuck. Phenomenal routine. My only thing is the body position in the layout.

Another 9.975.

Brooks – FX – UW – double tuck, a bit of a bounce – switch to…….wolf jump 1.5 attempt? doesn’t have the wolf position at horizontal or the twist around – 1.5 to layout, just a hair short – front lay to front full, a little soft in the legs. 9.800

FINAL: UCLA 197.600, Washington 196.000

Some big moments for UCLA today from Ross and Ohashi. Not the strongest performance for them overall with some of those middle-lineup bars routines and the first 2/3 of the beam lineup, which took those totals down out of where they could have been.

Washington just does get into the 196s with a 196.000. Floor continues to be the good event for them, beam is the one that can still get there because it should be their strongest event again this season but isn’t quite secure enough yet.

Elsewhere, Stanford is counting falls on both vault and beam after hitting a 49 bars rotation because obviously. Stanford ends up with a 195.000, but Arizona State breaks the 196 barrier with a pretty massive 196.375

  1. If you have the “Altitude” channels, you can watch the OU/Denver meet on tv. Channel 681-1 for me on DirecTV.

  2. Announcer – “her favorite music is Madonna as you can tell by her music”. Umm, that’s Whitney Houston.

    1. Per the Twitter of someone at the meet (@taranicoleg), she crashed pretty hard in bars warmups and may have left the arena altogether to get checked. Presumably, that’s the equipment malfunction that delayed the meet :((

    2. Apparently she took a bad fall on bars in the warmup. Guessing we won’t see her at all today.

    1. I’m glad she was pulled from all events for her safety rather than pushed to compete.

  3. this is a really bad year to have maggie on my fantasy team. obviously she’s scoring high on the events she can compete but my vault lineup needs her badly!!

    1. I’m really tired of hearing people whine about gymnasts being in or out of lineup because of how it affects their fantasy team. Who gives a crap about fantasy gymnastics

      1. People who do fantasy gymnastics care about it. It’s the same as people who play other fantasy sports. Those who play fantasy football are constantly talking about lineups and statistics of those players during the season. If you don’t care about fantasy gymnastics then just skip over those comments, they clearly don’t pertain to you.

      2. It’s pretty dumb to harp on about fantasy gymnastics when a gymnast is obviously being rested for safety. It would be way worse if she came back too soon and got injured worse.

      3. And yes, thank you for the comment above about safety. I’d rather focus on safety than on someone’s stupid fantasy team. And I would love to skip over the comments but they are frigging everywhere.

      4. Well my fantasy team has a bunch of useless scrubs on it who are never in the lineups – is it wrong to pray for an injury to one of the regular Florida beamers? Just a minor torn Achilles for one of them so my back-up gymnast can get in the lineup. 🙂

Also Maggie better be back in the vault and floor lineups next week or I will scream.

      5. Omg the post above is exactly wtf is wrong with fantasy gymnastics. Praying for an Achilles injury to a real person so that you can win in a fictional game? Get a life.

  4. OU’s depth will really be tested today, particularly on their already shaky floor rotation.

  5. holy smokes I can’t believe that whole OU floor lineup hit

Hope Brenna & Bre are okay :/

  6. Had tickets to the UCLA meet in Seattle but wasn’t able to travel there due to the storm. Anyone know of an ESPN2 link without a cable login? VPN alone wont work.

  7. I don’t understand the relative scoring of Frazier and Hano on bars. I thought Frazier was significantly cleaner.

    1. Probably testing lineups. They still need to figure out their final lineup member on each event.

    1. Seriously. Kooyman is very inconsistent and doesn’t have the potential for big scores to justify her being put in almost every week. Meanwhile Toronjo has gone 9.8 in exhibition every time. I feel like UCLA has 5 locks and is just trying to find that sixth person. I feel like the strongest candidatesfor the final spot is Toronjo, yet the lineups they put out doesn’t reflect that. A.Glenn, Frazier, Flatley, Kocian and Ross are without a doubt the core five, and if Dennis and G.Glenn aren’t up to par by postseason Macy should be that final member of the bars squad based on what we have seen so far.

      1. Why doesn’t UCLA just have Anna Glenn and Grace Glenn in the bars line-up (put one up second and the other fourth) and then just have Anna compete twice – pretending to be her twin? 🙂 Would anyone really be able to tell the difference?

  8. Wow, am I hating on Denver today. I could stream ANY OTHER STUPID BOY SPORTS, but could not get the stream to watch this meet. As I watched the live stats all I wondered was what did Spencer think about that routine. It looked like they took OU down a few notches with scoring, then tried to elevate DU on beam. Gotta go back and read all the live blog notes for this meet.
THANK YOU SPENCER!!! YOU ARE WONDERFUL!

  9. Glad UW seems to have a great turnout for this meet in spite of the snow! I had tickets too but didn’t want to chance driving on icy, hilly roads, and now it’s started snowing in earnest here again, so I made the right decision.

  10. “I would have been fine with 9.950, but that bit of deepness in the landing is not a 10 for me.”
Good thing it is not about you

    1. It’s his blog. He’s sharing his opinion. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. He’s not the color commentator for the broadcast, he’s a guy with his own blog sharing his personal opinions on the sport. Personally, I’m fine with this 10 because it’s pretty in line with a lot of 10s that have been given out on vault over the past few years, but I’m not going to get snarky with Spencer for sharing his opinion on his own blog.

      1. Well said Mary. 💜 Funny because this person says, ‘I don’t remember asking you’ yet they literally just did the same thing to Spencer. Rude.

    1. I don’t really blame the judges for giving O-hashi 10s on floor because it’s what I expect unless she has a major error or deduction that can’t be ignored.

Blame the attention of the floor routine going viral and the attention paid by non-college gym fans for the judges feeling obligated to throw the 10s.

      1. So totally wrong in you analogy! Judges are supposed to JUDGE not hype the viral. Ohashi is fun to watch but for hell sake – quit bouncing out of landings. It’s like she is jumping to catch the “10’s”. The routine is great but not always a 10. Again, judged do your jobs and make it real.

    2. UCLA. Of course it’s a 10. Have to protect the ranking. I personally am so sick of Oklahoma Florida and UCLA. It’s beyond a joke at this point. They are outstanding gymnasts and don’t need the gratis scores.

    1. That the mystery of Sarah Finnegan’s scoring continues to persist through multiple seasons is baffling. Anyone else wonder if her cleanliness and calm countenance allows judges to see little deductions more clearly than gymnasts who have consistent form issues and dramatic personalities?

  11. I kind of feel like this is what happens when someone goes ‘viral’ with the general public. The judges SHOULDN’T give them a pass or not apply deductions, but it seems like unless there’s a fall there is pressure to give them a perfect score. Perfect example was when Ohashi went OOB yet it was overlooked.

    1. Not if she keeps performing like she has been. Last week on Bruin Banter Nia Dennis said that she has a torn labrum, so they’re resting her on bars when they can, but I feel like they’ll put her up in the post season if there’s nobody else who can reliably score decently. To me, Hano’s score this week isn’t an indication that she can score decently because it seems pretty clear that she was overscored compared to the other competitors.

      1. Hano was judged by a completely different standard on vault and bars. Watching I was like fair score, fair score, fair score and then Hanos score pops up and I’m like wtf.

      2. It seems as if UCLA always has at least two people with torn labrums on their teams. The Glenns, Kocian and so on..

  12. The ASU floor judges were doing a little bit of “we’re getting this team to a 196 no matter what” (though the scores for Stanford were also pretty friendly.) Personally, I think around a 49.15ish would have been more accurate for that rotation.

On the other hand, Szafranski was comparatively lowballed for her beam.

  13. Well, at least some of the scoring for UCLA was reasonable! And I’m personally pleased that Kyla got a 10 even if it’s not the 10iest vault ever.

  14. I was at the UCLA/UW meet. I have to say I was impressed at how UW kept up with UCLA and didn’t have any major errors. I was actually sitting right in front of the vault so had a great view of Kyla’s 10. I also almost got ambushed when Poston ran out on her tucked front, but fortunately she was okay. All in all Ross and Ohashi were amazing as usual.

I also got a special bonus as I was sitting right in front of UCLA great Onnie Willis, and Miss Val came right over and gave her a hug, and afterward the meet was over she invited Onnie down to the floor and took a picture right in front of me with the two of them and Margzetta Frazer. Fun to see Elise Ray coaching there too as both she and Onnie tied for the NCAA AA title in 2001.

  15. No. That stick was a safe way to land a 1.5 and her feet didn’t move. 🙂
