I’ll start with Florida and Missouri today, a fairly important competition for Missouri (as far as “important” goes in January, which is not at all) because Missouri hasn’t gone 196 yet and needs to take advantage of any of the limited home opportunities to get those huge numbers. Or you know, whatever, there are tons of meets left.

One thing to watch for Florida will be whether Baumann is in the vault lineup (update: she is) after falling last week. There are plenty of good full options, but they want that 1.5 from her. Aspen Tucker is also back in the lineup for Missouri today. Missouri is back to competing 9 after competing 8 last week.

I could seriously watch this Sarah and Suzanne hagiography that they’re reshowing on the SECN right now all day long.

Rotation 1

Schreiber – VT – lands short on her full with a lunge forward, not her strongest showing. 9.600

Richards – UB – Maloney to bail, a little soft back in the bail catch – good final cast hadnstand position, again a little arch but nice vertical – DLO, basically stuck, hop in place, leg separation in the air. 9.850

Gottula – VT – full – really strong amplitude – nearly stuck it, small movement with one foot, just a bit of direction – but a strong vault. 9.750 a tad tight.

Gowey being a senior means there are only a few more chances to talk about that time Martha called her Racial Gooey.

Gowey – UB – strong Ray – toe on to pak, smoothly done – maintains her vertical position on the cast 1/2 – DLO…eeeef, came in deep, collapses in the knees and a lunge back, was great until then, and she did save the dismount. 9.775 – so basically they were going to give her a 10 that tells me because def two tenths on dismount.

Tucker – VT – solid enough full, bounce back – some elbows on the table so doesn’t get a ton of amplitude. 9.700

Hundley – UB – Maloney to pak – that little bit of legs apart – short hs on low – toe to van leeuwen, a bit of legs – FTDT dismount with a bounce to the side. Not her cleanest or most composed routine but a fine hit. 9.775

Porter – VT – lands a bit too short on her 1.5 today with a hop back – some knees and deepness – not her strongest but pulled it out. 9.700

Schoenherr – UB – toe 1/2 to huge jaeger – good cast – toe on to bail, nice legs together – handstand positions comfortable – double front 1/2 out with a hop back. The late position on those 1/2 turns and the dismount hop are really all you can take there. 9.850.

Brandt – VT – very strong handspring pike 1/2, smallish bounce back – good amplitude and very strong chest position on landing (for this vault). 9.800.

Skaggs – UB – great counter on her tkatchev though a large straddle on her connected pak – handstands look solid – DLO, good stick. Did have one large error of form in there on the pak, the rest was strong. 9.875

McCrary – VT – back out there with her 1.5, a lock-legged landing that would make Tim Daggett make sounds but it worked out – short landing with a lunge back – nice potential and leg form in the air. 9.700

Thomas – UB – Maloney to clear hip to pak, leg break on pak – toe – van leeuwen and noooooooo – she goes over on final cast – realizes there’s no point to trying to keep going after resting against the high bar and hops off.

After 1: Florida 49.125, Missouri 48.650

A bit of a disappointing bars rotation for Florida – some solid sets, Skaggs and Schoenherr did their things, but not the cleanest showings from Gowey and Hundley and then Thomas with the fall. Missouri OK on vault. I think they’ll feel a little hard done by on the scores for Gottula and Brandt because those were nice vaults, but not enough of the others had the landings.

Kentucky’s meet not yet underway. Let’s come on, Kentucky. Get going. Finally got started – hit vault for Warren with a lunge back.

Rotation 2

Skaggs – VT – she’s going today – nicely done on her full, nearly stuck, small movement, some legs in the air – not the very highest full but solid. 9.800

Skaggs has come in for Baumann.

Tucker – UB – arches first hs but putts it back – piked jaeger, hit – good hs on bail, some legs – giant full to double tuck, hit. Looked a little ragged early but pulled it together. 9.800

Alexander – VT – her usual gigantic full, a step back but not too large, a secondary step adjustment, but nothing to take for distance of course – 9.750

Christensen – UB – giant full to tkatchev, a bit late on full – bail, solid position, good toes – shortfinal cast – giant full to a high double tuck, secure landing. Improved.

Reed – VT – very good 1.5 from her this week – only a small hop on landing – good speed, distance, and power. 9.875. I’m more on the side of the 9.9.

Schreiber – UB – Maloney with some legs into bail – a bit short on a couple vertical positions – DLO, slide back. 9.800. All these 9.8s are not created equal.

Kentucky got a good 1.5 out of Worley on vault this week.

Schoenherr – VT – just does pull out the landing on her 1.5 – a deep landing with a squat and a hop to the side – saved it. 9.650

Sheremeta – UB – 1/2 to jaeger, solid – a short hs in there – clear hip to bail, legs apart on bail – some hip angle on handstand – front 1.5 dismount, small hop. 9.800

Every routine is just a 9.8

Thomas – VT – hits her 1.5, just a bit short and hops back to get the landing – not as deep as Schoenherr’s landing but not as strong as Reed.

Porter – UB – good first hs – jaeger, good toes, not the highest but solid – bail, some angle and a little leg break – 1/2 into double front, just a bit deep with a hop back. 9.850

Richards – VT – hits her 1.5 – good dynamics – kind of a sizeable hop to the side – but nice quick vault and has the distance, a bit of soft body position in the air.

Hu – UB – Church to pak to glorious – good hs on low – van leeuwen with a bit of legs – toe full to double tuck, stuck landing. Awesome routine. 9.950. They went there and I don’t have too much argument. Especially compared to the routines that were getting 9.800s in this lineup.

After 2: Florida 98.050, Missouri 97.850

Florida still kind of erratic on those 1.5s save for Reed, who did very well. Vault scoring definitely tighter than bars scoring today, where we just saw some 9.800s in that Missouri rotation where the opportunity was there to go into the 9.7s. Just hanging around 196 pace after two events.

Kentucky is going to have the lead in its quad meet after a 49.075 on vault. (Korth landed a bit short on her 1.5 today, so they didn’t get the score they were looking for there.)

Hislop is up on floor now for UNC at the Kentucky quad. Front lay to beautiful rudi, just a little deep in the knees – front lay to front full, presents out of it, glorious twisting of course – switch ring will get deducted for lack of head release – double back, some cowboy, good control. A little bouncier than she’d like on those first two passes, but otherwise as expected.

Rotation 3

Schreiber – BB – full turn, a bit tentative – bhs loso series, good, maintains toe position well – switch 1/2 to split jump to beat, switch was a bit short, split looked good – punch rudi dismount, too quick on the salte out of it with a fake-stick but a nice hit. 9.800

SJS – FX – double pike, small bounce back – “It’s hard not to shake your head when watching this event.” LOL – I mean same – back 1.5 to layout to stag, a little Lauren Mitchell on that stag lift – double tuck, solid control, chest down. Some lack of control but improved over last season. 9.775

McCrary – BB – kickover, very solid – bhs loso, smallest adjustment – split to double stag, absorbs the landing – bhs 2/1, some knees and a lunge back, but good. 9.750

Gowey – FX – front lay to rudi, pikes down the rudi a bit to find the landing – switch 1/2 to wolf jump full – double tuck, maintains control on landing. Not a lot there, but Gowey. 9.900. That’s a little high for me.

Sheremeta – BB – bhs loso series – check with a leg-up, pretty extension – switch side a tad rushed – aerial to split – gainer full, chest forward, small hop. 9.750

Hundley – FX – whip to double tuck, controlled step back – “a tribute to someone she loves very much” IS IT MARY LEE?!?!?! – double pike, very secure as well – 1.5 to layout, just a slight bit whipped around – good control as usual – some amplitude that can be taken, but she Hundleys all the landings.

A weirdly off bars routine from Cally Nixon means Kentucky is working from a hole on bars.

Porter – BB – switch to split, a little slow in combination – aerial is short, saves it with a leg-up check – redoes the aerial and has another little check into back tuck. I would not give that second attempt as an acro series. kickover, secure – 1.5, small hop. 9.850

Interesting score to watch because it should end up being equivalent to a fall with the checks and the series.

Reed – FX – Strong DLO, good security on landing – switch to wolf full, a bit short on switch – front lay to rudi, a bit of lack of control – double pike, nailed landing. 9.850

Gottula – BB – bhs bhs loso, medium lean to hold it – full turn – switch to split jump 3/4 with a pretty large check, some wobbling and arm waving to save it – gainer full, hop in place. 9.650 that will count.

Thomas – FX – fab DLO, the biggest – front full to lay to sissone, pretty and well controlled – switch leap full to popa, perfect. They mention Trinity being on the national team. If you go to the USAG national team page, she was removed this month… – double pike, borderline control but good. This was better than her 9.975 last weekend. 9.950. Which is about right.

Hu – BB – bhs loso, small arm wave adjustment – switch to split, good – y spin, such control – aerial to beat, super smooth – aerial to scale, nailed – Hu dismount – into stuck gainer full. Lovely. Had a check on her series but little else.

Baumann – FX – double tuck, well controlled – “she is capable of doing a double layout” we’ve heard that for 75 years – 1.5 to front full, has some knees in there – switch 1/2 to popa – double pike, strong landing. 9.925

Florida extending its lead after that floor rotation. Missouri sub-196 pace after beam, but on home floor, they’ll still be in with a solid shot to get that 196 today.

L Brown – UB – Denver – good first hs – Maloney to pak, very solid leg form but goes over on a handstand on the low bar and has to improvise. Sigh.

Shaffer stuck her beautiful Y1/2 with just a little lean to hold the stick.

North Carolina is leading Kentucky after 2 events, though UNC has gone on its good ones (vault/floor).

Brown just got a 9.900 for going over on a handstand?!?!?! That has to be a scoreboard mistake right? Or, I guess that means Denver has officially arrived. Glynn hit well after her, but I was too score-dead to write about it. Karr follows with a glorious routine – great form on gienger, small step on DLO.

Clapper – BB – bhs loso series, huge break, large bend at the hips – switch 1/2, another large leg-up check – staying on but they’ll need to drop this. 9.500

Florida will be a little eh about the first two events that kept them under 197 here, but beam and floor were strong. Missouri still can’t get out of that mid-195 zone, which won’t help the ranking.

LSU/Auburn begins

Rivers – VT – big height on her full again and a good stick. Strong, some direction, feet, not a lot else to take. 9.775 starts a hair low.

Stevens – UB – godo first hs – toe on to Ray, some position but hit – bail, solid vertical position – very short final cast hs – DLO, pikes down and a bounce back. OK but some things to take. 9.650

Rau – VT – hits her Y1.5, better than last week – still a fairly large lunge forward, some knees, but better than the step back/side than last week. 9.750. Comparatively weird because why is it the same as Rivers?

Sabados – UB – Ray, strong – good cast – toe on to bail, floppy legs in the air, makes it to handstand in the end – a bit short on final cast hs – DLO, stuck. Good. 9.825

Harrold – VT – strong 1.5, just a bit short with a step back that will take down the score from the ideal, but great distance and only that little bit of knees 9.825

Brusch – UB – Maloney to bail, solid position and huge amplitude – good hs – floaty DLO, overdoes it with a one-tenth bounce back. 9.825

Edwards – VT – gorgeous 1.5, one of her very best ever – only the smallest movement on landing. 9.950.

Watson – UB – small arch in hs – Ray, caught – very short on next cast hs – bail is cleanly done – short cast – FTDT, deep, chest down with a pretty big hop forward. 9.775 is quite high

Edney – VT – solid 1.5 from her as well, a litlte larger hop than Edwards but still small, back to her freshman year knee position, so that will be another little deduction. 9.925. I would say should have been 9.900

Day – UB – toe on to toe 1/2 to jaeger to overshoot, lovely jaeger, great toes – double arabian with a little step. 9.875

Johnson – VT – DTY, good, not her most control that we’ve seen with a bounce back – some knees – 9.925. I had 9.850 because of one tenth on the hop and .050 for knees, but she got some difficulty forgiveness there

Gobourne – UB – huge tkatchev, great psoition into pak, late on cast 1/2 on low – FTDT, a staggered stick. 9.925

After 1: LSU 49.400, Auburn 49.225

It looked like it was starting sluggish for LSU but three fantastic final vaults pulled up the score to a very respectable territory. Auburn will definitely take 49.225 for bars, a rotation score also saved by the last couple. Scores are flying early.

You guys, Arkansas is going to get an 8 million in this meet. And Oklahoma/Alabama is about to start. Much much much to do.

Olsen – VT – can’t control the DTY landing today, large bounce back and then another step to find the salute. 9.775

Nichols – UB – Oklahoma – Ray, strong – a short cast hs – legs on pak, a little bigger than usual so far this season – hits van leeuwen well – DLO, stuck landing. Good, not her very best. 9.950. But her very best score of course.

Dean – BB – LSU – full turn, overturns a little – side aerial to bhs, hit, the usual knees on bhs – switch to split jump 3/4, lean forward at hips and a lack of split there – aerial, leg-up check but held it – side aerial to full. Well, she stayed on. 9.750 is quite high.

Cheney – FX – Auburn – she’s on the team for real? whip to double tuck, good, small slide back – switch 1/2 to wolf full, switch will get deducted for split – back 1/2 to rudi, suppper deep potentially knee down but does run out of it to pretend she didn’t which was a delight. 9.525.

Rivers – BB – LSU – bhs loso, small lean – switch 1/2, a bit better on positions – switch to split jump 1/4, some back leg deductions there – cat to side aerial, lean check – gainer pike, stuck

Rotation 2 starting in Alabama

10.000 for Nichols. Her first of the season. You can say it was a little deep. Wouldn’t have minded 9.950, but but also probably the best vault she’s done in college. Really really good, especially from that front angle we originally got. And given what has been getting 9.900 today, an auto-10.

Mahoney – Ub – Alabama – some hip angle on the bail – tkatchev is solid – short on a couple cast hs in here – FTDT, good stick.

Stuck tucked 1.5 from Schoepfer on vault, it looks like a crazy mistake when she starts because we’re not used to tucking (and there still should be some legs-apart deduction) but good. 9.925

Doggette – UB – tkatchev to pak, great power – 1/2 turn on low, fine – a bit better on the cast hs – DLO, stuck landing….ish, a quick salute. Very good routine. 9.950

Meanwhile, Edney righted LSU on beam with a solid hit and now it’s Johnson – bhs loso series, secure, some form – front tuck, solid – switch to switch 1/2, good height, bend at the hips correction – 2/1 dismount, small slide. 9.900

Possible OOB for Harrold on FX for LSU but she may have just avoided putting her heel down. 9.850 so I guess she didn’t.

Degouveia – FX – front lay to front 2/1 – front lay to front full, some better control this week – switch 1/2 to popa, very nice positions – ooooh 1.5 to front full, out of control on landing but does very well to stay in bounds. 9.875

Blanco – BB – aerial, small adjustment – bhs loso series, gorgeous obviously, small slide back – L turn, controlled and held – switch to switch 1/2, keeps her toes well on that pass, which so few do. 2/1, stuck. 9.925, some wobble forgiveness because Blanco.

Webb – FX – OU – front 2/1, so high, very well controlled – 1.5 to front full, also great control and height there – this is her best floor routine – split leap and split jump are both short of position – rudi, solid. 9.925

Gaskins – BB – Alabama – she’s back in – side aerial with a pause into beat jump – full turn, small lean hold – split jump 1/2, balance check, minimizes the problem but still a heck – bhs loso series, some knees – switch to split – gainer full stuck. 9.850

Nichols – FX – 1.5 through to double tuck, just the slightest bit forward but holds a secure landing – back 1.5 to front loso – switch ring to split leap full, no trouble – double pike, just a little down but solid again. Good one. 9.975. I mean, no, but it was a good routine. This meet you guys….

She’s on track to get one of the highest ever AA scores again if she does her thing on beam.

Meanwhile LSU is getting some good numbers on floor to try to save it, though it’s not going to be a 197 so they won’t be happy.

Edney – FX – LSU – double arabian, deep with a lunge forward but keeps it in bounds – finishes with a nailed double tuck.

Sheppard anchors beam for Auburn – bhs loso series, secure – hitch kick and pauses, redoes it to side aerial, a bit short with a step – switch side, pulls it back – just a check here and there – bhs 1.5, a bit short, slide back

Johnson FX – LSU finishing out the meet – great full in, chest up, slide back though – back 1.5 to front layout, stuck and perfect – switch 1/2 to popa, super high – double pike, very strong landing. Really just the control on that first pass. This will get a 10 soon.

Mahoney – FX – double tuck, overdoes it a little, lunge back – front full to layout, just gets a little knee-mushy at the end but fine – double pike, shortish, step forward. 9.825

Dunn – BB – “did her training at Bart Conner gymnastics…but wait that’s MY NAME” – bhs bhs loso series, very solid – split jump to split jump 1/2, short on split jump – punch front full, step forward, some knees. 9.875

James – FX – big full in and better landing, crunches down a little but controlled – switch 1/2 to wolf full, switch 1/2 was short of split – front lay to rudi, very secure, a little chest forward – 9.850

Woodard – BB – full turn, smallest lean – side aerial to bhs, very solid, some knee position – kickover front to beat, really quick in combination, an actual connection – switch through to split leap – side aerial to full, stuck. Strong. 9.900

Olsen – FX – double double – just a bit short, hop forward – double turn – switch through to split leap full split jump full and it’s good – front tuck through to double tuck, two small hops back. 9.825

Webb – BB – flair with her full turn – bhs loso series, nailed it, pretty – aerial to split, torso lean in between – switch to split leap – side aerial to full, stuck. Good one. 9.950

Desch – FX – double pike, nice and high, bounce back – 1.5 to 1/2 to split jump front tuck, travels a little to the side but good – double tuck, solid landing, just collapses a little in the knees. 9.900

Smith – BB – bhs loso series, off line, lean at the hips and a leg up, saves it – aerial to straddle, good – beat to straddle 1/2, another large check and can’t connect into Korbut – bhs gainer full, stuck. 9.725

Doggette – FX – piked full in, super high, some leg separation in the pike – switch – split leap full to split jump full, back leg deductions on all of them – front tuck through to double tuck, nailed that landing. 9.925

This meet has broken me. Again. Like all of them.

Nichols – BB – aerial to bhs loso series, small lean correction on landing – full turn, slightly out of control – switch to split, lovely – 1.5, stuck. Good. Great second half. 9.900

Well, I mean, both teams did very well, and this performance is exceptionally encouraging for Alabama this season (we expect it from Oklahoma), but my god the scoring was out of control here. Just inter-planetary.
