I’ll start with Florida and Missouri today, a fairly important competition for Missouri (as far as “important” goes in January, which is not at all) because Missouri hasn’t gone 196 yet and needs to take advantage of any of the limited home opportunities to get those huge numbers. Or you know, whatever, there are tons of meets left.

One thing to watch for Florida will be whether Baumann is in the vault lineup (update: she is) after falling last week. There are plenty of good full options, but they want that 1.5 from her. Aspen Tucker is also back in the lineup for Missouri today. Missouri is back to competing 9 after competing 8 last week.

I could seriously watch this Sarah and Suzanne hagiography that they’re reshowing on the SECN right now all day long.

“We’re examples for everyone. EVERYONE.”

Rotation 1

Schreiber – VT – lands short on her full with a lunge forward, not her strongest showing. 9.600

Richards – UB – Maloney to bail, a little soft back in the bail catch – good final cast hadnstand position, again a little arch but nice vertical – DLO, basically stuck, hop in place, leg separation in the air. 9.850

Gottula – VT – full – really strong amplitude – nearly stuck it, small movement with one foot, just a bit of direction – but a strong vault. 9.750 a tad tight.

Gowey being a senior means there are only a few more chances to talk about that time Martha called her Racial Gooey.

Gowey – UB – strong Ray – toe on to pak, smoothly done – maintains her vertical position on the cast 1/2 – DLO…eeeef, came in deep, collapses in the knees and a lunge back, was great until then, and she did save the dismount. 9.775 – so basically they were going to give her a 10 that tells me because def two tenths on dismount.

Tucker – VT – solid enough full, bounce back – some elbows on the table so doesn’t get a ton of amplitude. 9.700

Hundley – UB – Maloney to pak – that little bit of legs apart – short hs on low – toe to van leeuwen, a bit of legs – FTDT dismount with a bounce to the side. Not her cleanest or most composed routine but a fine hit. 9.775

Porter – VT – lands a bit too short on her 1.5 today with a hop back – some knees and deepness – not her strongest but pulled it out. 9.700

Schoenherr – UB – toe 1/2 to huge jaeger – good cast – toe on to bail, nice legs together – handstand positions comfortable – double front 1/2 out with a hop back. The late position on those 1/2 turns and the dismount hop are really all you can take there. 9.850.

Brandt – VT – very strong handspring pike 1/2, smallish bounce back – good amplitude and very strong chest position on landing (for this vault). 9.800.

Skaggs – UB – great counter on her tkatchev though a large straddle on her connected pak – handstands look solid – DLO, good stick. Did have one large error of form in there on the pak, the rest was strong. 9.875

McCrary – VT – back out there with her 1.5, a lock-legged landing that would make Tim Daggett make sounds but it worked out – short landing with a lunge back – nice potential and leg form in the air. 9.700

Thomas – UB – Maloney to clear hip to pak, leg break on pak – toe – van leeuwen and noooooooo – she goes over on final cast – realizes there’s no point to trying to keep going after resting against the high bar and hops off.

After 1: Florida 49.125, Missouri 48.650

A bit of a disappointing bars rotation for Florida – some solid sets, Skaggs and Schoenherr did their things, but not the cleanest showings from Gowey and Hundley and then Thomas with the fall. Missouri OK on vault. I think they’ll feel a little hard done by on the scores for Gottula and Brandt because those were nice vaults, but not enough of the others had the landings.

Kentucky’s meet not yet underway. Let’s come on, Kentucky. Get going. Finally got started – hit vault for Warren with a lunge back.

Rotation 2

Skaggs – VT – she’s going today – nicely done on her full, nearly stuck, small movement, some legs in the air – not the very highest full but solid. 9.800

Skaggs has come in for Baumann.

Tucker – UB – arches first hs but putts it back – piked jaeger, hit – good hs on bail, some legs – giant full to double tuck, hit. Looked a little ragged early but pulled it together. 9.800

Alexander – VT – her usual gigantic full, a step back but not too large, a secondary step adjustment, but nothing to take for distance of course – 9.750

Christensen – UB – giant full to tkatchev, a bit late on full – bail, solid position, good toes – shortfinal cast – giant full to a high double tuck, secure landing. Improved.

Reed – VT – very good 1.5 from her this week – only a small hop on landing – good speed, distance, and power. 9.875. I’m more on the side of the 9.9.

Schreiber – UB – Maloney with some legs into bail – a bit short on a couple vertical positions – DLO, slide back. 9.800. All these 9.8s are not created equal.

Kentucky got a good 1.5 out of Worley on vault this week.

Schoenherr – VT – just does pull out the landing on her 1.5 – a deep landing with a squat and a hop to the side – saved it. 9.650

Sheremeta – UB – 1/2 to jaeger, solid – a short hs in there – clear hip to bail, legs apart on bail – some hip angle on handstand – front 1.5 dismount, small hop. 9.800

Every routine is just a 9.8

Thomas – VT – hits her 1.5, just a bit short and hops back to get the landing – not as deep as Schoenherr’s landing but not as strong as Reed.

Porter – UB – good first hs – jaeger, good toes, not the highest but solid – bail, some angle and a little leg break – 1/2 into double front, just a bit deep with a hop back. 9.850

Richards – VT – hits her 1.5 – good dynamics – kind of a sizeable hop to the side – but nice quick vault and has the distance, a bit of soft body position in the air.

Hu – UB – Church to pak to glorious – good hs on low – van leeuwen with a bit of legs – toe full to double tuck, stuck landing. Awesome routine. 9.950. They went there and I don’t have too much argument. Especially compared to the routines that were getting 9.800s in this lineup.

After 2: Florida 98.050, Missouri 97.850

Florida still kind of erratic on those 1.5s save for Reed, who did very well. Vault scoring definitely tighter than bars scoring today, where we just saw some 9.800s in that Missouri rotation where the opportunity was there to go into the 9.7s. Just hanging around 196 pace after two events.

Kentucky is going to have the lead in its quad meet after a 49.075 on vault. (Korth landed a bit short on her 1.5 today, so they didn’t get the score they were looking for there.)

Hislop is up on floor now for UNC at the Kentucky quad. Front lay to beautiful rudi, just a little deep in the knees – front lay to front full, presents out of it, glorious twisting of course – switch ring will get deducted for lack of head release – double back, some cowboy, good control. A little bouncier than she’d like on those first two passes, but otherwise as expected.

Rotation 3

Schreiber – BB – full turn, a bit tentative – bhs loso series, good, maintains toe position well – switch 1/2 to split jump to beat, switch was a bit short, split looked good – punch rudi dismount, too quick on the salte out of it with a fake-stick but a nice hit. 9.800

SJS – FX – double pike, small bounce back – “It’s hard not to shake your head when watching this event.” LOL – I mean same – back 1.5 to layout to stag, a little Lauren Mitchell on that stag lift – double tuck, solid control, chest down. Some lack of control but improved over last season. 9.775

McCrary – BB – kickover, very solid – bhs loso, smallest adjustment – split to double stag, absorbs the landing – bhs 2/1, some knees and a lunge back, but good. 9.750

Gowey – FX – front lay to rudi, pikes down the rudi a bit to find the landing – switch 1/2 to wolf jump full – double tuck, maintains control on landing. Not a lot there, but Gowey. 9.900. That’s a little high for me.

Sheremeta – BB – bhs loso series – check with a leg-up, pretty extension – switch side a tad rushed – aerial to split – gainer full, chest forward, small hop. 9.750

Hundley – FX – whip to double tuck, controlled step back – “a tribute to someone she loves very much” IS IT MARY LEE?!?!?! – double pike, very secure as well – 1.5 to layout, just a slight bit whipped around – good control as usual – some amplitude that can be taken, but she Hundleys all the landings.

A weirdly off bars routine from Cally Nixon means Kentucky is working from a hole on bars.

Porter – BB – switch to split, a little slow in combination – aerial is short, saves it with a leg-up check – redoes the aerial and has another little check into back tuck. I would not give that second attempt as an acro series. kickover, secure – 1.5, small hop. 9.850

Interesting score to watch because it should end up being equivalent to a fall with the checks and the series.

Yeah 9.275

Reed – FX – Strong DLO, good security on landing – switch to wolf full, a bit short on switch – front lay to rudi, a bit of lack of control – double pike, nailed landing. 9.850

Gottula – BB – bhs bhs loso, medium lean to hold it – full turn – switch to split jump 3/4 with a pretty large check, some wobbling and arm waving to save it – gainer full, hop in place. 9.650 that will count.

Thomas – FX – fab DLO, the biggest – front full to lay to sissone, pretty and well controlled – switch leap full to popa, perfect. They mention Trinity being on the national team. If you go to the USAG national team page, she was removed this month… – double pike, borderline control but good. This was better than her 9.975 last weekend. 9.950. Which is about right.

Hu – BB – bhs loso, small arm wave adjustment – switch to split, good – y spin, such control – aerial to beat, super smooth – aerial to scale, nailed – Hu dismount – into stuck gainer full. Lovely. Had a check on her series but little else.

Baumann – FX – double tuck, well controlled – “she is capable of doing a double layout” we’ve heard that for 75 years – 1.5 to front full, has some knees in there – switch 1/2 to popa – double pike, strong landing. 9.925

Thomas = Hunter; Baumann = Caquatto. Sunrise, sunset.

Denver and Arkansas have started, though we’re not getting scores yet, which is cool.

Hickey hit a full with a pretty large lunge back 3rd up for Ark on vault.

After 3: Florida 147.525, Missouri 146.700

Florida extending its lead after that floor rotation. Missouri sub-196 pace after beam, but on home floor, they’ll still be in with a solid shot to get that 196 today.

A fall on vault for the 4th up for Arkansas (Rogers?) hands down on a full

L Brown – UB – Denver – good first hs – Maloney to pak, very solid leg form but goes over on a handstand on the low bar and has to improvise. Sigh.

Shaffer stuck her beautiful Y1/2 with just a little lean to hold the stick.

North Carolina is leading Kentucky after 2 events, though UNC has gone on its good ones (vault/floor).

Brown just got a 9.900 for going over on a handstand?!?!?! That has to be a scoreboard mistake right? Or, I guess that means Denver has officially arrived. Glynn hit well after her, but I was too score-dead to write about it. Karr follows with a glorious routine – great form on gienger, small step on DLO.

49.425 for Denver on bars

Rotation 4

Hundley – BB – aerial with a lean check – bhs loso series – switch side, solid – full turn, fine – switch to split – 1.5, small movement on landing. 9.775

Sheremeta – FX – front 2/1, good position, just a bit of lack of control – switch side to popa looked fine – rudi has a bit more crossed legs (at least from the angle) into loso, good control – 1.5 to front loso, good. 9.800

Clapper – BB – bhs loso series, huge break, large bend at the hips – switch 1/2, another large leg-up check – staying on but they’ll need to drop this. 9.500

Schreiber – FX – double pike, some chest position but well controlled- rudi loso second pass, goes well off line but controls the landing – 9.800

Richards – BB – bhs loso loso series with a check to the side – switch to straddle, good – side aerial with some feet, into full dismount, hop in place. 9.850

Brandt – FX – double pike, good power, slide back – front lay to front full attempt, welllll short, no chance, sits it down – double tuck, well short on landing there too, tries to save it and then trips over her own feet and falls again. That kind of day. 8.050

Baumann – BB – switch to split, lovely – bhs loso series, super solid – strong routine here – side aerial with a lean correction – 1.5, stuck with a bit of stagger. 9.875

BREAKING NEWS. Kambrie Brandt is eating something. I repeat, Kambrie Brandt is eating something.

Gottula – FX – double pike, nice height, just a little chest position – front 1/2 to back 2/1, controlled, some leg position – switch 1/2 to split jump full, short of split position on both – double tuck, good tucked shape in the air, chest down again. 9.650

Gowey – BB – switch to split, actually a bit short on switch today – bhs loso loso series, very solid – aerial to sissone, arm wave, a ltitle slow in combo – good hit routine. 9.900

Stuck Y1.5 for Lynnzee brown on vault for Denver. Just a touch of position, amazing landing. 9.925. Maddie Karr followed her with a basically identical stick. And an identical score. 9.925.

McCrary with a good hit on floor for Missouri, much needed because they’re already counting a 9.650. 9.800 for her –

Thomas was lovely on beam – cat walked over the keyboard there so I lost all of it. It was Trinity, she didn’t stick the dismount, otherwise it was excellent. 9.925

Porter – FX – double pike, stuck landing – 1.5 to layout, also well controlled, a bit of legs on 1.5 but very strong – switch and popa – double tuck, small movement. 9.850

Arkansas will be very happy with this start. Well over 196 pace after two.

FINAL: Florida 196.850, Missouri 195.600

Florida will be a little eh about the first two events that kept them under 197 here, but beam and floor were strong. Missouri still can’t get out of that mid-195 zone, which won’t help the ranking.

LSU/Auburn begins

Rivers – VT – big height on her full again and a good stick. Strong, some direction, feet, not a lot else to take. 9.775 starts a hair low.

Stevens – UB – godo first hs – toe on to Ray, some position but hit – bail, solid vertical position – very short final cast hs – DLO, pikes down and a bounce back. OK but some things to take. 9.650

Rau – VT – hits her Y1.5, better than last week – still a fairly large lunge forward, some knees, but better than the step back/side than last week. 9.750. Comparatively weird because why is it the same as Rivers?

Sabados – UB – Ray, strong – good cast – toe on to bail, floppy legs in the air, makes it to handstand in the end – a bit short on final cast hs – DLO, stuck. Good. 9.825

Harrold – VT – strong 1.5, just a bit short with a step back that will take down the score from the ideal, but great distance and only that little bit of knees 9.825

Brusch – UB – Maloney to bail, solid position and huge amplitude – good hs – floaty DLO, overdoes it with a one-tenth bounce back. 9.825

Edwards – VT – gorgeous 1.5, one of her very best ever – only the smallest movement on landing. 9.950.

Watson – UB – small arch in hs – Ray, caught – very short on next cast hs – bail is cleanly done – short cast – FTDT, deep, chest down with a pretty big hop forward. 9.775 is quite high

Edney – VT – solid 1.5 from her as well, a litlte larger hop than Edwards but still small, back to her freshman year knee position, so that will be another little deduction. 9.925. I would say should have been 9.900

Day – UB – toe on to toe 1/2 to jaeger to overshoot, lovely jaeger, great toes – double arabian with a little step. 9.875

Johnson – VT – DTY, good, not her most control that we’ve seen with a bounce back – some knees – 9.925. I had 9.850 because of one tenth on the hop and .050 for knees, but she got some difficulty forgiveness there

Gobourne – UB – huge tkatchev, great psoition into pak, late on cast 1/2 on low – FTDT, a staggered stick. 9.925

After 1: LSU 49.400, Auburn 49.225

It looked like it was starting sluggish for LSU but three fantastic final vaults pulled up the score to a very respectable territory. Auburn will definitely take 49.225 for bars, a rotation score also saved by the last couple. Scores are flying early.

You guys, Arkansas is going to get an 8 million in this meet. And Oklahoma/Alabama is about to start. Much much much to do.

Checking in on that Arkansas/Denver meet – we have Hambrick on beam for Arkansas, hit loso series with a bit of lean – switch to switch 1/2, leg-up break – beat to straddle 3/4, small lean – gainer full, stuck. 9.725

Some landing trouble for Denver is spoling these floor scores.

Rotation 2

Sheppard on vault missed the board entirely and rounded off directly onto the foam – did a Ylayout – 9.500. That’s pretty high for a ylayout you guys

Johnson – UB – maloney to bail, solid – short cast hs on high – toe on – DLO, nice and floaty, hop back. 9.800

Glenn – VT – Doesn’t know whether she can salute or not? Ultimately goes, hits a full – just a small hop, some feet, some chest down. 9.800

Dean – UB – and she’s in for Alyona, so that’s our answer there – godo first hs – Ray, close ish but caught – a bit of hip angle on her bail catch – nice final cast hs – some legs on DLO, small hop. Good. 9.775

Day – VT – sits down her 1.5. They’re counting Sheppard’s 9.500 now

Rivers – UB – small back on first cast – Maloney to bail, solid – a bit of back on handstand – tkatchev, hit, looked like she was releaseing too late but fine – nearly found the stick on her DLO, step forward. 9.825

Stevens – VT – she jussst does pull out her 1.5, lands it – has a lot of knees in the air and some direction. 9.825 quite high

Durante – UB – 1/2 into jaeger, very high – good cast hs – pak, some legs apart – 1/2 turn on low, very good vertical – hitting good vertical positions – FTDT, small step. 9.875

Watson – VT – comes up short on her 1.5 with a couple steps/lunges there. Not on today with the vaulting.

Edney – UB – Hindorff, good – bail, very strong position – hitting her handstands – DLO, small hop in place, just that usual little bit of feet. Strong.

Oklahoma/Alabama has begun. Trautman has returned to the bars lineup today. Good routine, with a stuck DLO, you know NDB

Gobourne a hit 1.5, step back still though

One of Harrolds’s better bars routines. Step on landing. Once gaain the back of the lineup saves things a little for LSU.

Mahoney – VT – Alabama – pretty in the air as always but landing short with a little hop forward. 9.850 is extremely high for that.

Thomas – UB – Oklahoma – toe 1/2 to jaeger, solid jaeger, not the highest – just a bit of angle in the bail – finishes DLO short with a lunge forward. 9.750

Burgess – VT – Alabama – small hop back onfull, some piking in the air, but good.

Degouveia – UB – Oklahoma – piked jasger, very strong – nice cast hs – toe on to pak, perfect – 1/2 turn on low borderline – good handstands – FTDT, holds the stick with a little lean movement. Good. 9.925

Graber – VT – lovely height on her Y1.5 but a large lunge forward as well, some knees. 9.900 LOLOLOL.

I know I don’t usually comment on leos, but these Alabama leos are not it.

Smith – UB – Oklahoma – Ricna to pak, smootly connected – 1/2 turn on low, OK – good final cast hs – DLO, a little whippy but stuck. Excellent. 9.950.

Olsen – VT – can’t control the DTY landing today, large bounce back and then another step to find the salute. 9.775

Nichols – UB – Oklahoma – Ray, strong – a short cast hs – legs on pak, a little bigger than usual so far this season – hits van leeuwen well – DLO, stuck landing. Good, not her very best. 9.950. But her very best score of course.

The scores at this Alabama/Oklahoma meet so far are bonkers. You’re welcome.

Anyway Oklahoma 49.575, Alabama 49.250

Rotatin 3 starting at LSU

Dean – BB – LSU – full turn, overturns a little – side aerial to bhs, hit, the usual knees on bhs – switch to split jump 3/4, lean forward at hips and a lack of split there – aerial, leg-up check but held it – side aerial to full. Well, she stayed on. 9.750 is quite high.

Cheney – FX – Auburn – she’s on the team for real? whip to double tuck, good, small slide back – switch 1/2 to wolf full, switch will get deducted for split – back 1/2 to rudi, suppper deep potentially knee down but does run out of it to pretend she didn’t which was a delight. 9.525.

Rivers – BB – LSU – bhs loso, small lean – switch 1/2, a bit better on positions – switch to split jump 1/4, some back leg deductions there – cat to side aerial, lean check – gainer pike, stuck

Rotation 2 starting in Alabama

Childers – UB – Alabama – toe on to maloney to bail, good bail, a bit of legs in the maloney – her usual crazy legs on dismount but she did stick. 9.850

Stern – VT – hits her 1.5, lunge forward and some knees. 9.900 Well at least it’s consistent?

Dickson – UB – Alabam – bail is clean – good hs on high – toe on to tkatchev, good counter rotation – FTDT, stuck, nice routine. One of her better. 9.875

Durante falls third up on beam for LSU.

Degouveia – VT – OU – small hop forward on her 15, still not hte control she wants but a smaller hop than we’ve been seeing this year. 9.900

Graber – UB – Alabama – good first hs – gienger, loses the legs a little just at the end – nice vertical position on bail – strong cast hs throughout – FTDT, some legs, small slide back. 9.850

Webb – VT – OU – hop forward on her 1.5, not too large but she did come in a little deep. 9.900

ALL VAULTS AE THE SAME.

Givens – UB – Alabama – hecht mount – 1/2 turn to jaeger, pretty jaeger – bail with a pretty large leg break on catch – she’s rushing some of these vertical positions – DLO, holds the stick with a lean. 9.875

Nichols – VT – OU – fantastic! Great stick and some of her less leg-staggered landings too. Given the lens at this meet…

10.000 for Nichols. Her first of the season. You can say it was a little deep. Wouldn’t have minded 9.950, but but also probably the best vault she’s done in college. Really really good, especially from that front angle we originally got. And given what has been getting 9.900 today, an auto-10.

Mahoney – Ub – Alabama – some hip angle on the bail – tkatchev is solid – short on a couple cast hs in here – FTDT, good stick.

Stuck tucked 1.5 from Schoepfer on vault, it looks like a crazy mistake when she starts because we’re not used to tucking (and there still should be some legs-apart deduction) but good. 9.925

Doggette – UB – tkatchev to pak, great power – 1/2 turn on low, fine – a bit better on the cast hs – DLO, stuck landing….ish, a quick salute. Very good routine. 9.950

Meanwhile, Edney righted LSU on beam with a solid hit and now it’s Johnson – bhs loso series, secure, some form – front tuck, solid – switch to switch 1/2, good height, bend at the hips correction – 2/1 dismount, small slide. 9.900

I notice that the LSU live scores were like, “four rotations, but it’s too hard……”

Drew Watson just does pull out a double arabian on floor, large lunge forward but landed it.

Also: Oklahoma 99.200, Alabama 98.675

Everything for everyone!

Holy crap Campbell just fell on beam for LSU. Thought they had escaped heading to her set because it’s usually an auto-hit. Slipped off on her series.

Gobourne – FX – Auburn – finishing out this rotation – oooh big open double tuck taken wayy too far and OOB – back 1.5 to front layout – double pike, small slide. She still walks with the crown though

48.525 for LSU on beam.

Auburn still .2 behind after 3

Rotation 3 – AlabamaOklahoma

Desch – BB – bhs loso, secure – 1.5 turn, intentional? – switch to split, hit – back 1.5, leans to hold the stick. Good. 9.800

Draper – FX – OU – double pike, small bounce back – front full front full, some knees, solid – switch 1/2 to popa, good positions in the air, scoots her feet around a touch on landing – whip 1/2 to rudi, slide. 9.875

Klopfer – BB – Alabama – wolf turn, hit – aerial to bhs, slow in combination but good element form – cat leap to side aerial, very secure – 1.5, struggles to control, large lunge forward. 9.875 with at least a tenth on dismount landing OK

Smith – FX – OU – double tuck, very solid landing – ooooof missed her foot on her middle pass – cant’ pull second element around and sits it down – double pike, solid. 8.900

Burgess – BB – Alabama – full turn, good – one arm bhs to loso, very solid, knees soft – cat leap to switch side, high, arm wave correction – swtich, good – side aerial to full, does very well to cover that she basically didn’t get her second foot on the beam there, it looked from out angle. 9.850

There should be an app where you can just listen to Kathy talk about proper footwork to help you fall asleep. Would definitely subscribe.

LaPinta – FX – 3/1, some aliya legs throughout but controlled – double tuck final pass, bounce back. 9.900 sure why not that makes total sense I have no questions.

Possible OOB for Harrold on FX for LSU but she may have just avoided putting her heel down. 9.850 so I guess she didn’t.

Doggette – BB – hit her loso series, good lift over the beam – switch to switch 1/2 to beat, very secure – side aerial to full, doesn’t get much onto the full, low with a slide back. 9.900

Degouveia – FX – front lay to front 2/1 – front lay to front full, some better control this week – switch 1/2 to popa, very nice positions – ooooh 1.5 to front full, out of control on landing but does very well to stay in bounds. 9.875

Blanco – BB – aerial, small adjustment – bhs loso series, gorgeous obviously, small slide back – L turn, controlled and held – switch to switch 1/2, keeps her toes well on that pass, which so few do. 2/1, stuck. 9.925, some wobble forgiveness because Blanco.

Webb – FX – OU – front 2/1, so high, very well controlled – 1.5 to front full, also great control and height there – this is her best floor routine – split leap and split jump are both short of position – rudi, solid. 9.925

Gaskins – BB – Alabama – she’s back in – side aerial with a pause into beat jump – full turn, small lean hold – split jump 1/2, balance check, minimizes the problem but still a heck – bhs loso series, some knees – switch to split – gainer full stuck. 9.850

BTW Denver 197.250, Arkansas 196.825. I know.

Nichols – FX – 1.5 through to double tuck, just the slightest bit forward but holds a secure landing – back 1.5 to front loso – switch ring to split leap full, no trouble – double pike, just a little down but solid again. Good one. 9.975. I mean, no, but it was a good routine. This meet you guys….

She’s on track to get one of the highest ever AA scores again if she does her thing on beam.

Meanwhile LSU is getting some good numbers on floor to try to save it, though it’s not going to be a 197 so they won’t be happy.

Edney – FX – LSU – double arabian, deep with a lunge forward but keeps it in bounds – finishes with a nailed double tuck.

Sheppard anchors beam for Auburn – bhs loso series, secure – hitch kick and pauses, redoes it to side aerial, a bit short with a step – switch side, pulls it back – just a check here and there – bhs 1.5, a bit short, slide back

Johnson FX – LSU finishing out the meet – great full in, chest up, slide back though – back 1.5 to front layout, stuck and perfect – switch 1/2 to popa, super high – double pike, very strong landing. Really just the control on that first pass. This will get a 10 soon.

9.975. I mean you guys she slid back on the first pass.

So that’s going to end LSU 196.575, Auburn 196.275.

Auburn will feel it’s kind of a miracle to getinto the 196s for this meet with that vault rotation.

Rotation 4 – Oklahoma/Alabama

Thomas – BB – side somi, hit, small chest forward adjustment – bhs loso series, secure – switch to switch combination, straddle 1/4 – side aerial to full, small step. 9.875

Mahoney – FX – double tuck, overdoes it a little, lunge back – front full to layout, just gets a little knee-mushy at the end but fine – double pike, shortish, step forward. 9.825

Dunn – BB – “did her training at Bart Conner gymnastics…but wait that’s MY NAME” – bhs bhs loso series, very solid – split jump to split jump 1/2, short on split jump – punch front full, step forward, some knees. 9.875

James – FX – big full in and better landing, crunches down a little but controlled – switch 1/2 to wolf full, switch 1/2 was short of split – front lay to rudi, very secure, a little chest forward – 9.850

Woodard – BB – full turn, smallest lean – side aerial to bhs, very solid, some knee position – kickover front to beat, really quick in combination, an actual connection – switch through to split leap – side aerial to full, stuck. Strong. 9.900

Olsen – FX – double double – just a bit short, hop forward – double turn – switch through to split leap full split jump full and it’s good – front tuck through to double tuck, two small hops back. 9.825

Webb – BB – flair with her full turn – bhs loso series, nailed it, pretty – aerial to split, torso lean in between – switch to split leap – side aerial to full, stuck. Good one. 9.950

Desch – FX – double pike, nice and high, bounce back – 1.5 to 1/2 to split jump front tuck, travels a little to the side but good – double tuck, solid landing, just collapses a little in the knees. 9.900

Smith – BB – bhs loso series, off line, lean at the hips and a leg up, saves it – aerial to straddle, good – beat to straddle 1/2, another large check and can’t connect into Korbut – bhs gainer full, stuck. 9.725

Doggette – FX – piked full in, super high, some leg separation in the pike – switch – split leap full to split jump full, back leg deductions on all of them – front tuck through to double tuck, nailed that landing. 9.925

This meet has broken me. Again. Like all of them.

Nichols – BB – aerial to bhs loso series, small lean correction on landing – full turn, slightly out of control – switch to split, lovely – 1.5, stuck. Good. Great second half. 9.900

39.825 AA score, top of the year so far.

Klopfer – FX – double tuck, good control – split leap full to popa, not bad – back 1.5 to layout, whipped over – double pike, chest down, some landing adjustment.

Oklahoma 198.250, Alabama 197.400

Well, I mean, both teams did very well, and this performance is exceptionally encouraging for Alabama this season (we expect it from Oklahoma), but my god the scoring was out of control here. Just inter-planetary.

Do it again tomorrow? OK good.

  1. You’re the best as always, Spencer! I’m missing my team’s opening home meet because of work, so I will be following it via the blog.

  2. Sarah and Suzanne is such a masterpiece. Also, I’m in the same city as Kathy Johnson and I barely can even.

  3. Could you fix the scores link for the Kentucky meet? It’s showing last week’s meet. Thanks!

    1. I’ve looked around online, and every link I’ve found to live scores supposedly for that meet leads to the scores from the Kentucky/Missouri meet. I don’t know if there is a working live scores page at this time for the quad meet this week.

    2. did you find a working one? The one on UK’s Twitter is the same as Spencer’s – shows last week’s meet.

  4. I think ESPN fixed their app…this year my parents cable subscription log in doesn’t work for SEC 😂 grrrrr

  5. Yes, let’s show an extended clip of Tim Garrison talking to the judges. There definitely aren’t other teams at this meet.

  6. That vault score for Alexander doesn’t adequately reward the dynamics of her vault in my opinion.

    1. The announcers mentioned that there’s an ice storm in Columbia, Missouri. Understandable that people don’t want to be traveling at night in freezing rain.

  7. Noooo 🙁 Someone just posted that Molly Russ (Iowa State) is another achilles tear. 2020 is getting desperately close to being cancelled like 3 weeks into season.

  8. The vault is broken at the ISU/SEMO meet. They are trying to get in touch with a local gym to get a new one brought over. All of this in the middle of an ice storm. Fun times!

      1. Twitter feeds just say the scoring system is down…but scores have been posted for both teams Including vault.

    1. Especially when Jada Glenn went 9.8. I thought Rivers was noticeably better than Glenn.

      1. Exactly this – Glenn had a hop back, and Kai stuck it cold otherwise their vault was essentially identical including being off to the side; ergo – Kai should have had a 9.9. I know the beam scoring and floor (for Auburn) got a bit crazy at the end, but that vault from Kai was definitely underscored

    1. It sounds like she’s smiling the entire time she talks. I just want to her relax a bit. She also doesn’t always listen to the commentator she’s with — her mind is on describing gymnastics all the time. Commentary works when two people play off each other. She’s definitely good, but I think she’ll get so much better with more practice. I wish she would have majored in broadcast journalism because that would have provided so much more training.

      1. I think I appreciate that she calls everything out, whether positive or negative.

      2. Shut up! What do you do for work? Everyone on the internet can hold learning annex seminars. bitch whens yours?

  9. Not to be petty…. but

HOW MUCH LONGER WILL AUBURN BE ON THE RISE? This is the sixth or seventh year they have been rising.

  10. LSU needs to put Rivers later in the lineup on vault because her FTY isn’t getting the scores it deserves. I’m sure the coaches were hoping she could be the new Finnegan and lead off with a 9.9 stuck vault but it’s not happening, that 9.775 is terribly low.

  11. Is ESPN2 showing Oklahoma? On my feed they’re replaying a basketball game even though the guide says the meet should be on. Thanks!

    1. I’m watching on the ESPN web app because a basketball game went to overtime, so the basketball game is still showing on tv.

  12. This beam commentary for LSU is rivalled only by the judges not taking obvious deductions in terms of ridiculous oversights…

  13. Those Auburn floor scores were something. . .

People were going crazy over Hawthorne’s 9.95 last week, but Watson and Gobourne just went 9.8 and 9.775 for routines that were easily in the 9.6 range.

I suspect LSU will score equally as crazy high.

    1. for real chill out…do you really think that rotation was the worst scoring we’ve seen tonight?

      1. I mean Auburn’s floor was really overscored. People like to point out the 9.9s that shouldn’t be, but tonight the 9.8s and 9.7s for Auburn were ridiculous.

Auburn is a great team and I think LSU was also high on floor, but I agree with the above poster that Auburn’s floor rotation was crazy.

I also don’t know why pointing out an overscore for Auburn is greeted with a bunch of “relax” and “chill out” responses. The point of the comment section is to comment on gymnastics. I guess I learned you can only do that as long as it isn’t about Auburn.

  14. This week would have been a good one for LSU to put it all together before going to Florida. Once again, the Juniors hold the key to this season for them. If Dean, Desiderio, Durante, and/or Campbell stumble, LSU will struggle.

    1. You are absolutely right. I do not expect greatness from Dean and Liv (although i absolutely love her), but we surely need Desiderio, Sami and Campbell. Tbh I do not know where Sami’s deductions come from on bars. I do think she is 9.9 material.

      1. Campbell is one of my favorites to watch and I would love to see her win beam at NCAAs. I’m not too worried about her on beam or Sami on bars. But Dean on bars/beam, Sami on beam, Rau on vault, and Desiderio’s health are all concern areas. The good news is that it is still very early!

  15. I’m a diehard Oklahoma fan, and this scoring is hilarious. The first two rotations were generous, but not outrageous. Beam & floor, though ……..

    Bama looks good tonight.

    1. Ugh it’s awful – Oklahoma is definitely the best team out there but it makes it really hard to appreciate their excellence when they’re so overscored for everything.

  16. This commentary at LSU is ridiculous… LSU had the meet won before Johnson and they announce she needs a 9.7… and how does that go 10 with a slide (although minor) on the first pass. Although I could validate a 10.1 compared to other other FX scores.

Johnson and Dean are great but I’m still not buying LSU for another top 3 finish. Auburn is still a half step off the top SEC teams but they and Kentucky look like they’ll fight for the number 4 spot. I also really like their beam rotation.

    1. “Johnson and Dean are great but I’m still not buying LSU for another top 3 finish”

I assume you mean at the NCAA and last year, LSU looked horrible for a stretch and pulled it together. I thought the scoring was a little generous at the end, but not as dramatic as some people like to make it with LSU. Kiya Johnson will be great, but the upper classmen need to step it up… big time.

      1. They’ve overcome rough patches before but I simply see more built in issues at the moment. In previous years DD was also a pro a mixing her gymnasts in lineups to hide some weaker routines or use cleaner gymnasts to build scores for bigger not as clean ones. I’m not seeing the makings of that mix. That said- whoever closed the deal in terms of flipping Johnson wins employee of the year. I also think UF and Bama are looking stronger but it’s obviously early in season.

And truth in advertising- I grow surly when commentators brag about routines without acknowledging errors no matter which team.

  17. “Johnson and Dean are great but I’m still not buying LSU for another top 3 finish”

I mean, you clearly don’t know what you are talking about lol. Dean? Sure?

    1. I suspect they meant Rivers. The two freshmen have been great.

Also, the Maddie Rau situation confuses me. Does anyone know when LSU asked her to graduate early? They make it seem like LSU thought they needed vault help at the last minute and just called her up in the fall. Rau does not look ready to compete yet and it seems weird that she is being made out to be this “must have” for LSU.

      1. It’s really a head-scratcher that some of these gymnasts are able to turn on a dime and move up their high school graduation by a semester or even a full year with very little notice. Makes me wonder about the quality of education they’re getting, honestly.

      2. I imagine it’s quite easy to meet the basic qualifications for entrance, especially for a recruited student-athlete, and no they probably don’t add up to a very good education.

LSU (and most large, less-competitive state schools) will only give you a good undergraduate education if the student pursues it. I don’t mean it’s a bad university, but you can certainly graduate without ever being remotely challenged. Student-athletes are often focused on sports.

      3. I was speaking more to the quality of their high school education, but I agree with what you said. I knew someone who graduated from high school a year early, but as I recall she had to carefully plan her course selection well in advance to make that happen. She couldn’t have just done it at the last minute because a college team needed her.

      4. There are many high school students (athletes and non-athletes) who plan their schooling for a lighter load in their senior year so they can partake in all the activities without the stress of studying and getting good grades for the future.

Usually they have great grades but this isn’t necessary to have a lighter load in their final year.

  18. No talk of Arkansas/Denver here? I really like Arkansas and think Yamzon is one of the most under appreciated gymnasts in the nation, but those scores were generous.

It’s like UCLA home scoring followed Jordyn to Arkansas.

  19. Nia Alexander’s FL, vault IS SOOO HUGGE. 9 FEET FROM THE TABLE. Soooo much height, WHY ON EARTH IS SHE DOING A FULL? She has great form clean in the air, wth!!!

  20. This isn’t a sport.
NCAA Gymnastics is broken. I’m not sure why judges even attend the events – they’re definitely not judging.

  21. Okay SO ALYONA SCHENIWHATAVA, wasnt in the bar lineup for LSU clearly, but I saw her chalking up so she did an exhibition routine I WISHED they would have shown it, anyone know how she did?????

    1. No exhibition. They let her warme up but let Dean go this week. They are now giving her more time before throwing her back out. You can’t do exhibitions either when televised on SECN or ESPN due to time restrictions.
