Back at it for another day. I’ll spend a bit checking in on the Rutgers quad meet before Michigan/Illinois begins, which I’m quite interested to see. I was also afflicted with the disturbing realization today that I no longer get Oklahoma’s random fox sports network and can’t live blog their home meets this season. A true tragedy.

We also had a classic “oh no” development that I didn’t get to talk about in the live blog last night as UC Davis scored a 187 after having to count a 7 on beam and only five vault scores and…it was just a confluence of nightmares. In the later meets on Friday, we also had Arizona defeat Oregon State face-to-face in its effort to restructure the Pac-12 hierarchy.

Or, you know, I had the wrong time for Michigan Illinois and got here just in the nick of time. Sorry about that! I was really bad on the times this week. Must do better. Check check and recheck.

Rotation 1

Waight – VT – Illinois – lunge forward on Y1/2, but fine. 9.675

Heiskell – UB – Michigan – good jaeger to pak, nice cast hs on high to end – giant full to double tuck, fake-stick, very clean set. 9.875. Wow

Howell – VT – hop back on a full, some piking, good, normal – 9.725

O’Hara – UB – 1/2 to jaeger, good height on jaeger, late on 1/2 turn – bail, solid – they’re hitting their final casts well – DLO, some piking, larger lunge back. 9.800

Takekawa – VT – full, comes up short today with a hop forward, not quite the ideal amplitude. 9.800 is too high for a short vault. We’re seeing those go 9.700 elsewhere

Mariani – UB – tkatchev, nice height – has a couple moments of legs – small movement on DLO

Scott – VT – good full, nice distance, some piking and direction, a hop back. 9.825

Brooks – UB – good first hs – 1/2 turn to piked jaeger, comfortable – a bit short on a cast on high – bail, hit, slight angle in the catch it appeared from out angle – good final cast – DLO 1/1 dismount, hop back. Good hit. 9.850

Townes – VT – also a powerful full, better direction than Scott but a large bounce back. 9.775

Wilson – UB – arch on first hs but pulls it back – piked jaeger, solid – bail, only a slight bit of hip angle there on catch – solid final cast – probably an overall flexed foot deduction – DLO, small hop back. 9.825

Jones – VT – clean full, not the biggest in the lineup, good direction, a little deep in landing with a hop back. 9.700

Wojcik – UB – tow 1/2 to piked jaeger, lovely – solid cast hs – a little whippy on bail but comes into handstand in the end – good final cast – DLO, flung out a little with a hop back. 9.850. We’ve seen that go 9.900. Or, like 14 at Oklahoma/Alabama last night.

I’m seeing that Brooks’ score is listed as 8.850 and for now I’m assuming that’s a typo because she hit that routine and I assumed when I heard .850 it was a 9.850, which is what it should be. So we’ll go with 9.850

Farley hits in exhibition for Michigan on bars.

After 1: Michigan 49.225, Illinois 48.825

Yeah, they’ve fixed Brooks’ score now. 9.850. I’m not losing my mind after all, which is a fun realization. Michigan looked really good on bars, scoring a bit tighter there than on vault so far. Just needed more sticks to get those 9.9s. Most of them probably lost a tenth on dismount alone. Even though Illinois’s vault score isn’t large, for Yfulls with mostly pretty large bounces, they’ll be happy to escape with a 48.8

Rotation 2

We got to see the tail end of Ramler on bars for Minnesota at that quad with a near-stick-college-salute on her FTDT. She goes 9.850. Lu follows, great Maloney to Pak, perfect – cast 1/2 on low, excellent – eeeesh finishes with a super deep DLO, nearly knee down with a lunge. 9.600 for her.

Biondi misses on a jaeger to lead off bars for Illinois. Hits it the second time around. She follows Koulos who debuted on vault with 9.775.

Mariani follows with a strong and secure yfull. 9.825

Howell – UB – Illinois – piked jaeger, very clean – pak, good leg position – late on cast 1/2 position on low bar – short final cast – giant full to double tuck, overrotates it with a bounce back. 9.700

Brenner – VT – short landing on her Y1.5, has to lunge back to save the landing.

Bars scores strugggggling because they’ve given Biondi a 9.725 for a hit now, which is def wrong. 8.725. There you go.

Takekawa – UB – 1/2 turn to piked jaeger, great amplitude – good cast – bail hs, good vertical, whips into it a little – small arch in final cast hs, pulls it back – flings out her DLO a little but finds the stick. 9.875

Brooks – VT – Y1.5, good, nice distance and direction – fairly large lunge forward. 9.850

O’Donnell – Ub – jaeger, solid – short cast handstand and some angle in her bail catch – giant full to double tuck, good stick there – a couple short handstands that will take down the score. 9.800

Wojcik – VT – nearrrrly found the stick on her y1.5, had it for a second and then slid back – didn’t think it would be one of her best because she was angled in her round off onto the table, but great. 9.850. They’re not really here for Wojcik today.

Powe – UB – hit jaeger – bail – some angle – rushes final cast hs – FTDT with some leg separation, great stick

Wilson – VT – huge Y1.5, only a small hop forward, which will help her score – a bit of legs in the air. 9.875

Bixler – UB – hits a deltchev with some crazy legs – bail, some feet – a short cast hs – DLO, step back. Hit.

After 2: Michigan 98.400, Illinois 97.725

Michigan goes 49.175 on vault with four solid Y1.5s. The landings aren’t quite there yet which is why we weren’t seeing 9.9s, the lunges were too large to get there, but another very strong rotation. Illinois pulled it back for 48.900 after the opening fall on bars to survive that rotation. Not their cleanest possible day on the bars, but they had the dismount landings pretty well down.

Minnesota just at 48.875 on bars. We didn’t see a lot of that rotation, so hard to make any conclusions, but they needed that Lu score, and her dismount problems made her the dropped score.

We’re watching Ursinus on floor right now in Rutgers, and one of my favorite things about seeing the DIII teams is that they often have to be a bit more creative in how to try to get the SV up there because the gymnasts are coming in with like “LOOK AT ALL THE D ELEMENTS I CAN DO” so we see skills that aren’t part of the rote college routines. Even if they’re rough sometimes, it’s a different look.

Rotation 3

Borden – BB – aerial with a lean to try to get into her front handspring in combo, will be a question as to whether she gets credit, she kept moving but it was a clear lean and break – full turn – double stag, good – beat jump to sheep, love the height on the beat, it looks like a real element when she does it – punch front full, stuck.

Funk – FX – double tuck, well controlled – front full to layout, loose in back getting the layout around, secure landing – switch side to popa to wolf jump full, some indistinct landing positions as she overturned the early elements in the combo – punch rudi, very solid landing again. 9.800

Unsurprised that the judges are taking some time to get Borden’s score. And we cut away right as the judge is about to turn around her score to see Takekawa doing mental routines. Cool cool.

9.400 final for Borden, but we didn’t get to see what SV she was given.

Biondi – BB – nice height in bhs loso series, solid as well – switch to beat to double stag – side aerial, smallest adjustment – 1.5 dismount, small hop. Very good one for her. 9.725 is a bit light for me there.

Wojcik – FX – interesting to see her up 2nd – double pike, small movement – lovely toes on her leap combination – front 2/1 to front pike, well done – rudi to straddle jump, slightly out of control on the straddle jump but not too bad. Another lovely one. 9.850

Howell – BB – bhs to back lay-pike, check to the side – switch to straddle jump 1/4, small pause in between – cat to switch side, nice lift in that switch side – gainer pike, stuck. Solid. I like the amplitude that Illinois has overall as a team in this rotation. 9.825

Brenner – FX – secure full in landing, chest down – 1.5 to layout with a lunge out – switch side to popa, popa looked a little angled – double pike, similar to the full in, good control, some chest position. 9.800

Noonan – BB – bhs loso series, good extension, very solid – switch to gainer loso, also secure – beat to double stag with a check – gainer full, stuck, nice one. 9.875

Brooks – FX – excellent FTDT, very comfortable landing – back 1.5 to layout, solid extended position – no trouble with the leaps – double pike, nailed the landing. That should get them into the 9.9s I’d imagine. A good one. 9.900

Scott – BB – kickover front with a check into bhs, another check with a lean at the waist – I’d say no combo there – switch to split, excellent – pretty extension in her aerial – gainer full, stuck. 9.800 is quite quite high for those errors, even if you give the series.

Ivy Lu just got a 9.950 on beam for Minnesota that we didn’t see –

Wilson – FX – open full in for her, but a small amount of landing adjustment – front lay to front full, controls the lunge – switch side to straddle 1/2, works for her, the leaps were always the question for her becasue she has the tumbling, but this is a solid solution, good lift – double pike, just a little short, presents quickly to cover. 9.825

Takekawa – BB – side aerial to bhs, controls it well to avoid a check – switch to gainer loso series with a check to the side – full turn, a little out of control – gainer full, stuck. A few more checks than her 10 from last week. 9.875

Koulos – FX – switch side to split jump full, short of position on the split jump – front lay to front full, controls it – switch 1/2 (short) to wolf jump full, good rise into wolf jump – double pike, solid.

Illinois goes 49.100 on beam to stay around 196 pace heading to floor.

We’re getting a look at Ramler on beam for Minnesota, they’re on track for a huge score here. Bhs loso series, very solid – aerial to wolf, lovely – beat to split ring, such lovely toe point on her front leg – side aerial to stuck full, wonderful routine.

She’s following a 9.975 from Sales, which I didn’t see, so lord and butter this is going to be huge.

And it’s a 10 for Ramler!

You guys Minnesota just got a 49.700 on beam. Program record. I only saw Ramler’s routine, so I can’t judge on the overall total, and I’m not even mad about Ramler’s 10 because she has the form to earn it and had no wobbles.

After 3: Michigan 147.575, Illinois 146.825

Michigan on track for close to a 197 with a big beam result here.

Rotation 4

Mariani has a leg-up check on her side aerial on beam – small adjustment landing loso series – solid position on her switch side – 1.5, lunge forward. 9.700

Takekawa – FX – double pike, solid, some position – switch side to popa, very slightly out of control on landing – 1.5 to layout, a bit soft in layout position – punch rudi to split jump, pretty well controlled. 9.725

Farley – BB – bhs loso loso series, well controlled, not the highest but super solid – split jump to split jump 1/2 with an arm wave – love that 1.5 turn, and today’s is a good one – side aerial to split jump, I MEANT TO TURN TO THE SIDE AND DO AN ARM WAVE THERE IT’S CHOREO NOT A CHECK, love it – gainer pike, small movement. 9.800

Howell – FX – front tuck through to double tuck, solid landing, a bit low but not really – switch side to popa to wolf full – that’s the new switch side to popa this season as people are trying to get that extra tenth in bonus – double pike, again solid, just a little down. 9.775

Brooks – BB – bhs loso loso, very solid – not bad on her switch switch combination, especially as far as those series go, the second one was also real, which is rare – kickover, good – double tuck, super high, bounce back. 9.900. Some difficulty forgiveness there.

Scott – FX – front 2/1, good twisting position, just a bit out of control – back 1.5 to layout, lovely – THE FLOOR IS MY FRIEND choreography – excellent leaps like she showed on beam – rudi, well controlled. Pretty routine. 9.725 is oddly low for me.

Funk – BB – loso series – switch side 1/4, well done – beat to popa, only the slightest bit short of rotation but another solid position in the air – side aerial to full, stuck. 9.900

Noonan – FX – front 2/1 with a quick crossover step – front lay to rudi, a bit of chest position – switch to cat leap 1.5 – 1.5 to layout, just a bit of knees in the 1.5.

Wojcik – BB – aerial to beat jump, beautiful – switch to split, lovely as well, Wojcik things – bhs bhs loso, ideal as well and then she almost kind of wobbles on her side choreography because gymnast – full turn – side aerial, strong – 1.5, short landing with a lunge back. Perfection until the dismount. 9.825

Biondi – FX – double pike, good, just a little landing absorption – front lay to front full, works to hold the landing – double tuck, small bounce back. But solid. 9.800

O’Hara – BB – full turn, smooth – side aerial to bhs series with a bend at the hips -a smaller check on her leap combination – side aerial to 1.5, short with a small step.

Waight – FX – front tuck through to double tuck, short landing with a step, good tight tuck position – struggles to show position in her dance ement combo and a little control issue on landing – side pass! 1.5 to front tuck – double pike, wayyy short hands down.

So the final will be Michigan 196.700, Illinois 195.650

A good performance from Michigan. A few dismount landing issues on beam, some things here and there, but good. Should compare favorably to low 197s elsewhere. Illinois had a shot at the 196 here but didn’t quite have the bigness on floor to get there. Odd scoring today as there were some scores that looked definitely low, but not an overall tight me because we also had some clear overscores here and there.

After looking like things would be a problem after bars, Minnesota finishes with 196.875, so you definitely take that one.

I’ll be back for a little bit of Ohio State/Michigan State and SUU/New Hampshire before UCLA’s Utah Adventure gets started.

Meanwhile, at the San Jose St/Alaska meet one of the bars judges is judging UCLA/Utah and one is judging Washington state L10s (but it changed which one was which halfway through the rotation?), which is making for some interesting ranges, and over on San Jose’s vault I had a Yfull at 9.800 and it went 9.575. So that’s where we are.

Does no one own a clock? And I don’t even think it’s my fault this time.

Meanwhile Temple is putting others to shame with a Kevin Copp broadcast and all routines from all three teams.

Ella Douglas comes up short landing her Yhalf for MSU with a lunge back. Ohio State starting comfortably on bars, Adamski sticks her DLO in the third spot for them. Aepli follows with a hit, small slide back on FTDT.

Clean Maloney and a stuck DLO for Miller for OSU, some leg break on the bail, very strong routine. Great form on Maloney and Pak from Swartzentruber – some loose back before a van leeuwen, and a hop on the DLO, another good one though, very strong bars rotation for OSU.

49.275 for Ohio State on bars.

If you’re waiting on the UCLA/Utah State/BYU meet, make sure you’ve made an account at BYUTV. You don’t have to pay to watch, but you do need to have made an account.

Second rotation starts with a fall from Sydney Ewing for Michigan State. Good save from Raybon up in the third position as her hand nearly slipped on her overshoot but she held it together.

Both teams saved themselves from early low scores to post reasonable second rotation totals. Ohio State had some rough early vaults but nearly got to 49 and Michigan State got through without counting a mistake on bars.

Based on the live scores it looks like Poston is back in the beam lineup for UCLA…and Kyla’s going third? We’ll see.

I turned on BYUTV and the first thing I heard was “we were just sitting there with muskets having a good time.” Readers of this site who also endure living in Utah, you’re the real heroes.

Also UCLA just tweeted that Kocian is in the floor lineup. Not what I expected. Also the bars lineup, repalcing Steele. So that should be interesting.

Yes, I chose to ignore BYU’s SNL that was on before this meet. It truly broke me into 8 pieces.

All of the BYU gymnasts are #10?

Amy Smith’s hat is already a 10.

Rotation 1

Matthews – VT – BYU – solid height on her Y1/2 – large bounce forward, pretty good body position. 9.750

Leighton Varnadore – UB – Utah St – a bit short on first hs – maloney to bail, some legs in maloney – 1/2 to front giant half to double tuck, stuck. This bars camera work is an experience.

G Glenn – BB – bhs loso series, very strong – aerial to split jump, nice split position as always – switch to split jump with a small lean correction – bhs gainer full, small step. 9.825

Acro series is “two gymnasticsy type moves connected together” you guys.

Bennett – VT – BYU – round off full on back tuck, which is a 10.0 start, bounce back, presumed amplitude deductions. 9.775

Gutierrez – UB – USU – some floppy legs in Maloney to bail connection, hip angle – finishes with a very high double tuck. Good.

Frazier – BB – swithc to straddle, hit – aerial to back tuck, a little slow, kept moving, some knees in that aerial – almost got caught a little in her low to beam movements – full turn, solid – side aerial to beat, solid – bhs 2/1, stuck landing. Nice finish. 9.800

Evans – VT – BYU – very clean Y1/2, small hop forward – 9.800

Sullivan – UB – hop change to jaeger, caught – some handstand angles – pretty pak height and position – cast 1/2, a bit late – good cast hs – DLO, pretty float, slide back

Ross – BB – Is indeed third up – bhs loso series, super solid – switch ring to beat jump, strong – smooth full turn – aerial to beat, keeps moving well in combination because she wasn’t quite on for her aeiral – side aerial to full, stuck landing, nailed routine. 9.950

A Miner – VT – BYU – good stick on her full – somewhat soft in the knees as she comes in, very good landing. 9.850

Fishwick – UB – USU – Maloney to bail, nice bail position, some leg break in shap – short final cast hs – 1/2 to double front and can’t pull it around, sits it

Scoreboard actually says 9.975 for Ross. Broadcast said 9.950. We’ll see.

Poston – BB – beat to straddle jump 3/4, a little pause in between – bhs bhs loso, small check and bent knees throughout the series – long wait before dismount – 1.5 dismount, small slide forward. 9.850 is a bit high. Thanks to the rotation order, which is what you’re going for.

S Miner – VT – BYU – goes for the 1.5 but can’t get it, hands down as she didn’t quite get the twist around.

Rojas – UB – USU – good first hs – Maloney to bail, similar to the others, good vertical on the bail – strong final cast hs – DLO, small leg break, comes up short with a hop forward. Good. 9.800

A 9.975 “Usually” means one just gave a 10.

Flatley – BB – UCLA – has the same aerial to aerial series but this time she connected to a Korbut out of the second one to get her series. Good. side aerial, nice – L turn to immediate split and beat, good speed in combination. bhs 1.5 dismount, knees and a hop forward. 9.825

Stainton – VT – BYU – tucked y1.5 – got it around – deep landing with a big hop to the side and another hop back. Needed to hit and she did but a major break there. 9.625

Jeppesen – UB – USU – tkatchev, some feet and close but hit – toe on, a little arch – bail, loose back on catch – strong final cast hs – DLO, step back.

Sakti – BB – standing loso loso series, hits it, small lean correction – switch 1/2 to beat, a little short on switch – side somi, manspreads on landing but secure – side aerial to full, close to the beam but stuck. 9.900

All teams showing viable exhibitions. Hano now in the exhibition spot for UCLA on beam. Hits her lay-pike combination today with two steps back. Hits today.

After 1: UCLA 49.375, BYU 48.800, Utah State 48.725

UCLA will be pleased to get through beam with six hits today for the first time this season. Of course you know me by now, I like the strategy of putting Kyla earlier in lineups because she doesn’t need to anchor to get 10s (almost got one today with a 9.975 final) and can lift up other scores like Poston’s. The scoring was…weird. They were fairly normal/conservative with a couple of those 9.8s like Glenn and Flatley that could have been higher, but also went pretty high for Poston and Sakti.

BYU got through there without counting a fall, and Evans and Miner were exceptional on their vaults. Very nicely done.

The score on the scoreboard is wrong for Utah State because Fishwick fell and definitely did not get 9.900, but I see potential in there with those bails and dismounts, some cast handstands still, but moments of top-level toe point in some of those sets.

Rotation 2

Beeston – UB – BYU – a bit short on first cas ths – clear hip to gienger to overshoot – just a little legs on gienger catch – short final cast hs – DLO, pikes it a little, bounce back. 9.650

Leighton Varnadore – BB – USU – bhs loso series, check with a leg up – full turn – aerial, pulls it out well into beat jump because she was a little short on aerial – switch to switch combination – gainer tucked 1.5 to side, which has been upgraded to a D this season, hop. 9.675

Dennis – FX – front loso through to double tuck, nailed landing – split leap 1.5 to split jump full to straight jump, a bit unclear in landing position – front full to layout, secure landing – rudi to an out of control split jump that traveled well back. 9.825

BYU’s leo are a lesson in moire.

Miner – UB – BYU – grip change to jaeger to overshoot, a bit late on her grip change – small arch on final cast, pulls it back, DLO, small hop, good. 9.775

Rojas – BB – USU – switch to switch, low back leg there – bhs loso series, good form, a little check – breaks connection into side aerial with a lean – gainer full, hop back 9.450

Tratz – FX – UCLA – full in is a struggle, super deep landing with a large lunge – solid leap positions, at least from our angle – back 1.5 front full, came in deep with a step – double tuck was secure, but this will need to be the drop score. 9.675

Hubbard – UB – BYU – hits a good jaeger – bail, a bit of angle on catch – short on final cast – FTDT, comes in chest down with a hop forward. 9.700

Dittmar – BB – USU – a little slow in her press handstand mount – bhs loso, hit securely – bea tto split jump 3/4, just a bit of leg position – bhs bhs 1.5, hop forward 9.700

Kocian – FX – back 1.5 to rudi, some mushy legs on both elements, hit it – switch 1/2 to popa, a little short on switch 1/2 – double tuck, pulled around with a secure landing. A starting point. 9.850

Cyrenne – UB -BYU – toe to maloney to bail, solid handstand positions, some ankles apart throughout the combo – short final cast hs – DLO, hop up in place on landing. 9.775

Loomis – BB – USU – aerial to beat, some knees on aerial – long pause before bhs loso series, small check – split leap to double stag leap – gainer pike, small shuffle back. 9.675

Kramer – FX – front 2/1 to front pike, solidly landed, one of her good ones – back 1.5 to front lay to shush, just slightly soft – switch side to popa looked good today – rudi to a stretch jump, well controlled. Very good one. 9.950

Pitou with a little leg break on her bail and a small hop back on FTDT, otherwise strong. 9.750

Deharde – BB – USU – aerial to beat, hit – bhs loso, very secure – pike to straddle 3/4, and a real pike jump, that was nice to see. 9.900. Well now.

Frazier – FX – nailed her full in landing today again – side somi through to double tuck, also well controlled on that landing – split leap full to popa was out of control with a travel during the combination, also a bit low on 180 position – double pike, keeps that front foot down. That’s the best tumbling routine we’ve ever seen from her. 9.900

Stainton – UB – BYU – very strong piked jaeger to overshoot, good legs together – a bit short on final cast hs – FTDT and holds the stick. Best of the rotation easily. 9.850

Sullivan – BB – USU – aerial to to back pike, solid landing, no check – switch to back tuck, also nailed – 1.5 dismount, small hop forward. Another nice one. 9.900

Ross – FX – whip into double tuck, a little foot adjustment there on landing – 1.5 to layout, floaty, good form – split full to popa to shush, maybe a bit under rotated on popa – Kyla is easy to like because she’s a good student and she’s nice, you guys – double pike, deep legs, controls the step. 9.900

Exhibition time. Some killer glasses coming from Utah State on beam. Really like that straddle combination from Andres on floor in exhibition. She has a 2.5 to front tuck as well. Rudi was a little short. But this one could become Gracie Kramer in a hot second.

After 2: UCLA 98.800, BYU 97.650, Utah State 97.575

UCLA didn’t have the preferred routine from Tratz, otherwise no real trouble that had to count. Kramer had one of her good ones and Frazier did too apart from her leap combination where I would have taken a tenth and she ended up with 9.900. On track for a mid-197 here.

Utah State ended with two 9.90s on that beam rotation to save the team from some lower earlier scores, very secure routines. Byu with a few formies on bars, some handstands, some hops, no huge mistakes but enough for a rotation of 9.7s.

Meanwhile Ohio State had to count a fall on beam in the final rotation and Michigan State was just able to pull ahead, 195.450 to 195.375 final.

Rotation 3

And we’ve changed up the meet timing because now Mather is already going on beam? Becfore UCLA vaults? – Hits bhs loso series with just a bit of knees – switch with an arm wave and a pause – gainer full, short landing with a hop. 9.550 – probably not a 10.0 start

Dennis – VT – now she’s going – huge full as always – does not have the landing today with a medium bounce back. 9.850

Toomey – FX – front 2/1, good power, just a little little bit under as she landed – back 1.5 to layout , lot of arch on that layout, she twists really late, which I like – front full to layout, a bit of knees. 9.750

Poston – VT – handspring pike 1/2 not her strongest today, chest down more like the first meet, and a hop to the side as she staggeres to control it. 9.675

Bain – BB – BYU – loso series with a lean to the side – beat to straddle 3/4, lean correction, swithc with a pause into gainer loso, and falls. She was fighting it the whole time. 9.125

Sullivan – FX – USU – double pike, nice, just a little hop in place – back 1.5 and got no punch into intended front layout, super deep landing squat, did not appear to touch though – double tuck, very deep, two lunges forward 9.300

Kramer – VT – just does land her 1.5 today, short with a step back to save it, some knees. 9.725 and it will count.

A Miner – BB – BYU – hitch to kicover front to bhs, just a little slow into the bhs – beat to split jump 3/4, small lean and short of split – gainer full, small adjustment on landing. 9.875 is high.

Golison – FX – USU – front 2/1 to a crazzyzyzyzyz landing – bounds forward and all of her limbs go different directions – great height into her dance – lay to front full, solid. 9.625

Frazier – VT – a bit more control in her full landing today, slide back but not as large, good distance – 9.800

Cyrenne – BB – BYU – bhs loso series, solid, good height, no check – switch to switch 1/2 to wolf, gets to 180 pretty well but loses her feet – gainer pike with a small hop. 9.900. Scores rising here.

Hamar – FX – double tuck, secure landing – back 1.5 to front tuck, just does control the slide – switch side to popa to popa, pretty good, a little under on landing position in the end – double pike right to her face. So that’s not ideal. 8.950

Hano – VT – strong 1.5 in the air – hop forward and then another step into a cover salute. Knee position has improved. 9.850

Stainton – BB – BYU – kickover front with a small hesitation into bhs – switch to split jump 1/4, solid – 1.5 dismount, stuck with some knees. Good one. 9.875

Deharde – FX – nice and high double pike, does a good job trying to keep that front foot down – rudi to shush, travels quite far back on the shush but does pull it out – straddle positions looked fine – rudi loso, good lift on loso. 9.825

Ross – VT – nearly got the stick this week on her 1.5, nice and high – small step back. 9.875

S Miner – BB – bhs loso series with a small lean, some feet in the air – nearly a check on a hlaf turn – switch to straddle 1/4, another little hesitation – side aerial, hit – 1.5, small hop. Not as clean as the last few but a hit. 9.825

Leighton Varnadore – FX – USU – 1.5 to front layout, out of control on landing but not too much, a slide – wolf jump full, short of wolf position – good straddle positions – double tuck with a bounce, great tuck position. 9.850

UCLA went 49.100 on vault, BYU 49.025 on beam, Utah State 48.350

After 3: UCLA 147.900, BYU 146.675, Utah State 145.925

UCLA had a couple iffy moments on vault landings to get down to 49.100 there, BYU’s final few beam routines were the best moment so far for them, and Utah State had a pretty rough time on floor with a fall and a basically-a-fall.

Rotation 4

Rojas – VT – USU – full, hit, good height, bounce back pretty far, some piked position throughout 9.625

Hano – UB – short first hs – Ray to overshoot, good amplitude – good cast position on high – giant full with some legs into double tuck, small hop – LOL at Waller definitely right in front of one of the judges who could not see that landing. 9.850.

Stainton – FX – BYU – double pike, pretty solid, just a touch deep – 1.5 to 1/2 to split jump – switch ring to switch full, ring a little short – double tuck, good control. 9.825

Deharde – VT – USU – nice late turn on her full, but a large bounce back – good distance – 9.750

Kooyman – UB – short first hs – Maloney with some crazy legs into pak and brushes her feet on the mat while catching – back up to high – short hs – DLO, small hop back. Will need to drop this one. 9.625

Bain – FX – BYU – front 2/1, a medium slide forward – double tuck, a bit deep in landing, not too much movement – split leap full to wolf jump full, a deduction for split position and for landing control there – front lay to full to tuck, just a little off to the side ont he tuck. 9.775

Meyer – VT – USU – lunge back on full – has the height, not the most distance – also some pike throughout – 9.700

Kocian – UB – Stalder shap to pak, lovely pak – good 1/2 turn position on low – borderline final cast hs – FTDT, near stick, just a little absorption. She’s back. 9.950. I had 9.900 but a good one.

Vitkauskas – FX – BYU – comfortable front 2/1 with a small hop forward – 1.5 to alyout, small slide – good composed switch side to popa – punch rudi, controlled landing. Nice routine. 9.800.

Sullivan – VT – USU – round off full on back pike – gets good height on that vault, medium step back. Nice job. 9.750

Flatley – UB – good first hs – higgins to jaeger, lovely jaeger, a bit late on the higgins – toe on, some body position – bail, hit – good final cast hs – DLO, bounce back. 9.825

S Miner – FX – BYU – DLO, not the highest we’ll see in NCAA but comfortable landing – double pike, controlled landing – 1.5 to front lay to front pike, saves herself from going OOB, takes it right to the edge. 9.800

Wells – VT – USU – another good full – bounce back, also has the height, not the most distance. 9.775

Frazier – UB – maloney to pak, great – short cast on low bar – van leeuwen, hit – DLO, nailed landing. Good. She missed her low bar handstand in ther, otherwise excellent. 9.900

Pearson – FX – BYU – front 2/1, a bit out of control on hers with a lunge – switch ring to switch 1/2, a bit short on switch 1/2 – rudi, she wasn’t sure whether she was going to stick it or do controlled step and sort of did both – 1.5 to layout, secure landing again.

Leighton Varnadore – VT – USU – pretty y1/2, maintains her position throughout – small hop forward. 9.850

Ross – UB – maloney to bail to toe shoot, perfect – good final cast hs – DLO, does hold the stick well because it wasn’t perfect on landing but she didn’t really move. Maybe a little on replay.

10.000 for Kyla again – I think last week’s was a little stronger.

39.750 in the AA for Kyla.

A Miner – FX – BYU – DLO, also very strong – 1.5 to layout, controls the landing comfortably – double pike, good amplitude, small small front foot movement. Good. 9.875

Steele hits her bars in exhibition, may get that spot over Kooyman.

FINAL: UCLA 197.425, BYU 195.825, Utah State 194.750

UCLA’s first hit meet and best score of the year, secure, solid, composed meet. Vault landings were an issue, not much else was. An old story. BYU will have wanted a 196 from this home meet but was mostly impressive and not really home-overscored in the way we sometimes see for BYU. Utah State gave away the score on floor but had some “you should make regionals” level gymnastics on the other pieces.
