We’ve got some delightful Pac-12-hosted meets on the schedule midday today, probably the two meets of the weekend I’m most interested in—though by all accounts Georgia/Arkansas was a thriller yesterday. I haven’t gone back and watched the ones I missed on Friday, though I promise (maybe?) I will. If for no other reason than finding some good GIFs for the weekly GIF recap.

Meanwhile in early action Rutgers is having a true nightmare, with two falls on vault and three falls in the first three bars routines.

This Pac-12 Network stream “waiting to start” music has some real F-Zero vibes.

Per LSU’s lineups, Edney remains out on vault and bars and Sami Durante is in the vault lineup. I didn’t even know that was one of the choices.

They’re not introducing Tanya as the head coach, as she’s on health leave, and Michael is the acting head coach.

“They got two 10s thrown at them.” New proposal: if you’re giving someone a 10, you should have to literally throw it at them in the form of a plush 10 pillow. You should have to feel strongly enough about it to throw something, Mia Michaels style.

Rotation 1

This view of no events was really helpful for Peterson’s vault. Full on back pike, small hop this time, chest down. 9.750

Desiderio is free from her enwrappings this week, and the loso series and switch elements of the routine we’ve seen look solid. She’s not quite hitting the jumps the way she can (like she was short on a split jump and doesn’t typically struggle with an element like that) but solid. 9.850

Bird – VT – OSU – has the height on her full but comes in short, pikes down with a lunge forward

Good stick from Redmond on a DLO on bars, pikes it down in the second salto but finds the landing.

Dean – BB – LSU – side aerial to bhs, secure, usual knee bend in bhs. Finishes side aerial to full with an arm wave to try to hold the landing.

Gill is back to vaulting for Oregon State (what now?) bounce back on a full.

Yanish – VT – OSU – another huge bounce back on her full – no trouble with distance, power, or shape, but a large bounce.

Boyer for ASU finds the landing on her FTDT, step back.

Durante on beam with a check lean on her aerial, breaking the connection into her split jump.

Solid Yfull from L Dagen on vault, small bounce back, good layout shape, just a bit of feet

Gracie Reeves with a fall on her huge Jaeger.

M Dagen – VT – OSU – errrffff, falls on her Y1.5 this week, landed short with some stiff legs and fell, but she looks OK.

Judges talking about Durante’s beam routine, presumably that one moment we did see of it, the broken connection on the aerial split, though it shouldn’t be much of a conversation, she definitely broke the combo. But perhaps she tried to improvise something else we didn’t see since that was the only part of the routine we got.

Ultimately a 9.525 for Durante .

Edney – BB – LSU – aerial to sissone, comfortable – bhs loso series, secure – switch to straddle 1/4 looked pretty solid in position, this is a good angle for it – kickover front, also comfortable, she looked right on – 1.5 dismount, slide back, but a good one. 9.825

Arizona State got through bars with a 49.050. We didn’t see Leonard-Baker’s routine but it went 9.900. Oregon State 48.850 on vault.

Johnson – BB – LSU – bhs loso series, very secure, good extension – switch with a bit of a pause into switch 1/2, good elevation and position – aerial, solid, some knee bend in the air – 2/1, little bounce back. Another strong one. 9.875

LSU being treated to some non-SEC scoring in this beam rotation.

Campbell – BB – LSU – bhs loso series with a break, leg-up check and saves it – another small adjustment on full turn – aerial to sissone is quite pretty – switch to switch 1/2, good good – 2/1, bounce back.

But then again, Campbell got 9.850 with a full-tenth check on her series, a .05 on her full turn, and a non-stuck dismount, so they’re balancing out the scores here to a fairly accurate-seeming (based on what we saw) 49.225.

D’Antonio also did a pretty nice beam routine in exhibition for LSU. She had a check on her punch front, short of split on switch 1/2, and a hop on dismount, but fairly equivalent with a lot of the rotation.

Edney just got bumped up to 9.850 so LSU’s beam is now 49.250.

Rotation 2

Yamaoka – UB – OSU – shap, cast up – bail, some short vertical positions in here – a late giant full into double tuck with a bounce back. 9.700

Harrold finishes FX with a clean 1.5 to lay.

Lowery – UB – OSU – toe on to maloney, small leg separation there and into pak, good height – hesitation on her kip cast 1/2 on low, a pause and some legs – DLO, not the most height but finds a good landing. 9.875 feels high for that low-bar moment

Gunter on FX comes up short on her double Arabian but saves with two a couple stagger steps – a little shuffly on some landings here –

Bird on bars, hits a tkatchev, comes up well short on the next handstand – hit FTDT with a small step. 9.775

We see a random hit loso from Boyer on beam for ASU, pretty.

Minyard – UB – OSU – hits jaeger to overshoot – some looseness in final cast hs – DLO, pretty with a good stick.

We see a comfortably landed double tuck for Dean with goo d chest position.

Briscoe catches a little close on her jaeger but nice toe point as always – bail, small leg break on catch – DLO, chest down with a step forward

Redmond on beam finishes with a second sheep jump, though not a lot of closure there, gainer pike, short with a hop.

Campbell second pass is a double pike, clean in the air but with a slide back

Sabrina Gill misses a hand on her pak and comes off awkwardly, so that will be the drop for Oregon State. She has been the queen of weird bars misses so far this season.

Reeves – BB – ASU – bhs bhs loso series, very secure, just a bit of feet – switch to split, short of positions – aerial, smooth but kind of slow into her back dive…neckstand…whatever – 1.5, hop forward

Wilson – BB – ASU – smooth full turn – cat to switch 1/2, tentative in the leap and then a pretty large break, bend at the waist and then another adjustment – kickover front to beat, sit – gainer full, step back

We didn’t see Kiya Johnson on floor but she went 9.900

Edney – FX – LSU – double arabian, a bit short this week with a step back to hold it – back 1.5 to layout, clean – split leap full to split jump full, looked to have some back leg on that second element – double tuck, also a bit short with a hop forward. Gets away with it a bit with a 9.900 there.

Scharf – BB – ASU – wlf turn double, smooth – bhs loso series, a bit soft, check to the side – side somi, secure – switch to split jump, small hesitation in between – 1.5, bounce forward

LSU comfortably ahead but not on pace for a huge score today. Vault will be a moment of truth if Edney remains out of the lineup there. Still, on track for a 197, which has been rare so far this season.

We’ve got Utah/Cal about to start, which will be the primary focus for me, but I’ll keep letting you know what’s happening at OSU.

Our intro to this meet is about Georgia Dabritz and Tori Wilson for some reason? Just an excuse to shout NO GRIPTZ DABRIPTZ?!?!?

Rotation 3 started at OSU, Kai Rivers coming up short on her Yfull this week with a step forward.

Ddavis – BB – OSU – with a check on her back tuck out of ft+bk series – a little slow in rhythm but no other significant issues – does a good job pulling out a kickover front landing – stuck dismount

Sami Durante did vault – hits full, good control on landing, quite a bit of chest down leaning to hold the landing. But a reasonable full option while they’re depleted for sure.

Bordas – VT – Cal – good layout position on her full, has the height and direction, pretty large bounce back. 9.775

O’Keefe – UB – Utah – toe on to maloney, good leg position into pak, great height, small leg break – cast 1/2 on low – shortish final cast hs – double arabian, a little deep with a step but not too bad. 9.825

Ruby Harrold just does pull out her Y1.5 this week with a large lunge to the side.

George – VT – Cal – lovely full as always – good position and distance, but does hop back this week. 9.825

LeBlanc – UB – Utah – blind to high jaeger to overshoot, good, just a touch of feet here and there – solid cast hs on high – DLO, pikes it down a bit to find the stick and does hold it. 9.850

Clausi – VT – Cal – pretty solid Y1.5 – good distance, a medium hop forward – legs together, strong work. 9.850

Isa – UB – Utah – hits her Ray, comes in a little close – finds handstand well on her bail – quite short on final cast hs – flings her DLO out a little but it works with a stick. 9.875

LSU went sub 49 on vault. Oof.

DeSouza – VT – Cal – nailed her Y1.5, her best vault of the season easily. She has a little leg break on the block and some knees in the air. Found the landing this week. 9.875.

Paulson – UB – Utah – Into the bars lineup – maloney, good legs together, pak, high, small leg break – short cast hs on high bar – giant full into ddouble tuck, late giant full but just a little movement on double tuck. 9.850

Jones – VT – Cal – she’s into the vault lineup today – hits a big full – some piking some feet, but just a small slide back. 9.825

Reinstadtler – UB – Utah – toe 1/2 to jaeger, lovely as always – bail, small leg break in the air – good final cast hs – FTDT, a bit of crazy legs at the beginning, good control on landing. A couple rushed moments but good. 9.875

Mastrangelo – VT – Cal – lands a little short on her Y1.5, difficult they need in this landing – she lands short with a step back, medium-sized step, so not as strong as Clausi or DeSouza there. 9.825

Tessen – Ub – Utah – piked jaeger, comfortable – bail, small leg break – hits vertical on final cast, some loose back position – FTDT, small hop in place.

9.975 is BONKERS for that routine.

49.200 for Cal on vault, which is fine. They’ll be pleased with the landing on DeSouza’s Y1.5 for 9.875 (a UCLA 9.950), didn’t quite have enough of the other landings to get higher, but it works.

Utah ends up at 49.425 on bars for what was pretty much a normal rotation. Looks of solid 9.8 work with little breaks here and there. I don’t see the Tessen score at all. Like I would have been OK with 9.900.

Oregon State has gone 49.375 on beam and closed the gap on LSU to less than two tenths with one event left to go.

Pac-12 Network has been stuck on the back of Tom’s head for a while.

Technical difficulties on the Utah/Cal broadcast, so it has cut out. Is Cal bad luck? Like, everywhere Cal goes, the meet feed suddenly stops working.

Anyway, back to OSU/LSU/ASU…

LSU started on bars with 9.900 for Kiya Johnson to try to get back toward that 197y zone after vault.

Bird – FX – OSU – lay to rudi to straddle jump is hit – 2.5 with a crossover step, some legs, solid work.

We’re seeing Durante on bars, finishes FTDT with a suffle back, two small steps.

Meanwhile, Utah is going to have to count a 9.725 on vault, and Cal hass started bars with two 9.900s.

Force for Oregon State finishes up with a secure double tuck on floor. The bars scores are going higher for LSU, and Durante got 9.875 for that routine.

Madi Dagen falls on her front 2/1 on floor, was well short and her foot just slid out from under. A second fall on her next pass.

We didn’t see Shchennikova’s bars, but she went 9.825, which is a high for her. Split of 9.750/9.900. Oh, how I wish I had seen it…

Harrold – UB – LSU good zuchold – toe 1/2 to jaeger, solidly done – double front, pace forward – that landing deduction, a bit of rushing through positions, but a good one.

49.075 for Utah on vault could open the door for Cal to make up some ground, though we have a long delay on bars scores, which typically does not bode well.

Lowery – FX – OSU – hits front 2/1, a step out but a pretty controlled one – back 1.5 to layout, stuck again – split leap full to popa, precise finishing position – punch rudi, keeps front foot down, good. 9.925

LSU finishes 196.775, which is not had but not the kind of road score they’re looking for to move up in the rankings.

49.375 on bars allows Cal to move ahead of Utah. 98.575 to 98.500 after two events.

Yanish – FX – OSU – good DLO height, a small bounce back – front full to front lay, also a little slidey – switch side to popa, good straddle positions, a little indistinct in finishing position – double tuck, chest up, bounce back

9.925 (which is quite high for those landings) gives Oregon State 196.700, so they’ll come up just short of beating LSU, but being less than a tenth behind will be its own victory.

Jones – BB – Cal – solid wolf turn – aerial hit, a little slow into bhs loso but she doesn’t need it to have a series – very secure landing – beat to double stag, side aerial to full, stuck. Some foot things, some rhythm, but a strong opener. 9.825

Paulson – FX – Utah – double pike, good form, front foot adjustment – front lay to front full to stag, secure, a bit of loose knees – switch to switch 1/1, excellent leap combination, her floor highlight – back 1.5 to layout. Can get hit for amplitude on some of these combo layouts depending on the panel. 9.875. They didn’t really care.

DeSouza – BB – Cal – straddle jump to sheep, small rebound, some hip angle – aerial, smoothly done – bhs loso series, also secure – slightly hesitant in full turn – 1.5, small slide forward with a salute cover. 9.850

Randall – FX – Utah – double tuck, Amanda’s like BOO NO FULL IN – but it’s a very clean double tuck – a little too bouncy finishing her three dance element combo put pretty positions – secure double pike – 1.5 to layout, a hair short landing layout but dance covers. 9.875

Clausi – BB – Cal – kickover, controls it well into beat – bhs loso, no trouble at all, right on – cat leap to switch side, not the highest switch side but looked like she got to 180 – side aerial to full, small slide back. 9.900

Hoffman – FX – Utah – getting into the lineup – DLO opener, short landing with a hop forward – has some nice hops into her dance elements – back 1.5 to layout, comfortable landing. 9.850

George – BB – Cal – aerial to back tuck, very solid, moves relatively quickly between them – wolf double, very fast, controls it, you were worried for a second – switch to split to beat, small hesitation after switch, some back leg – gainer full, a bit deep with a slide back. 9.900

Maile O’Keefe just almost tripped walking onto the floor and she’s my hero.

O’Keefe – FX – Utah – double pike, under control, a bit chest down – front lay to front full is solid – switch to split leap 1.5, solidly done, no question on her split positions of course, and it looked around – 1.5 to layout, good height on layout, doesn’t need to arch it around like she kind of did. Good one. 9.900

Bordas – BB – Cal – aerial, hesitant into a split jump, kind of tentative there on both elements and a questionable connection – bhs loso series is literally perfect – switch to split, she’s having some back leg issues on these dance elements – side aerial, secure – gainer full, stuck. 9.875 is a bit high there for me.

Tessen – FX – Utah – front 2/1, controls the step, just a little bit of legs at the end – back 1.5 to front tuck full, got no punch into front tuck full and sits it down. Probably not a big deal for the rotation but pressure on Soloski now.

Watterson – UB – Cal – wolf double, strong – aerial with a leg-up check – bhs loso series with another large break, leg-up wobble, so this will already be the drop score in the lineup.

That replay closeup of Scott Bregman shaking his head about those wobbles is my everything.

Soloski – FX – Utah – under control on DLO landing, it’s nearing too banana-shaped for my liking but it works for her – – switch 1/2 to split jump full, has the lift – front lay to front full, solid – back 1.5 to layout, controls the step out.

9.925 for Soloski gives Utah 49.425 on floor to Cal’s 49.350 on beam, meaning we’re tied at 147.925s heading into the final event.

Home floor versus Utah’s beam. Should be fun.

Rotation 4

LeBlanc – BB – Utah – switch to split 1/4, secure – her wrists are an EXPERIENCE in this routine – bhs loso series, check, pulls back the lean to minimize – aerial to split jump, smooth – 1.5 dismount got a little ragged but only a small step. Good. 9.875

DeSouza – FX – Cal – double pike, kept the front foot down but a pretty large presenting lunge and some chest position – switch side to popa, slightly tight – back 1.5 to front full, shudders on landing but does a good job to control a slip with a small step – rudi, hit. 9.850

Burch – BB – Utah – bhs loso series, leg-up check and kind of a hilarious style bend to try to minimize it, but it was a leg-up check -next combo is solid – cat leap to aerial, covers arm wave – gainer full, secure there, but a large early break.

9.875? With a large leg-up wobble? OK?

George – FX – Cal – front tuck through to rudi, lovely rudi shape, keeps front foot down – switch ring and split leap full, perfect positions – front 2/1, also controls the step there. Nice. Next season, they should have her anchor the lineup with some hit-you-in-the-face-artistry-Netherlands- routine to get her 9.950+.

9.925. Or just do this. Now. I guess.

O’Keefe – BB – Utah – side aerial to loso series, right on – switch to split, good crisp 180s, not as much amplitude as she can get but she hits the positions, like Clausi – side aerial to full, pikes it a little, stuck landing.

So that routine was an easy .200 stronger than Burch’s, which is the issue with the 9.875 for Burch.

Bordas – FX – Cal – full-in, secure landing, chest down – switch 1/2 to wolf jump full, good height and positions – rudi, secure landing, a bit of raggedy legs – back 1.5 to layout, has to whip around the layout and loses some form. 9.900. There’s some home floor her –

Isa – BB – Utah – candle mount, hit, kickover front, deep landing but pulls it out – loso series, solid – split to straddle 1/4, good. Bhs gainer full, small movement, another good one. 9.900

Quinn – FX – Cal – Amanda making a knowing reference to the math debacle from UCLA last week – front lay to rudi, bounce back, good position – front lay to front full, hop forward, nice height on front full – switch 1/2 and I think botches her intended dance series of a switch full, just ends up doing a switch 5/8s into a fake-sissone – back 1.5 to half, holds the landing despite being a little low – 9.750. Surprised it was that close to the other scores, but if they gave her the switch full then she has enough content. For me, that was a switch 1/2 into sissone, with a deduction for position, and then a 0.1 off for no dance bonus.

Randall – BB – Utah – bhs loso series, secure – bea tto sheep jump, also solid – sissone with a check – rulfova was slightly off line but nothing major – 1.5, stuck landing. Good. 9.950 rather high.

Clausi – FX – Cal – full-in, nailed the landing like Bordas with some chest down – switch side to popa, hits her positons and gets it around – 1.5 to front full, dance out, good comfort on that pass, which a lot of people are trying to do now and stretching it to get there, it works for her – double tuck, out of control and lunges back OOB. 9.725

Paulson – BB – Utah – side aerial to loso, solid, a bit more foot form than O’Keefe – but the switch to split combo has good feet, hit positions well – a tad tentative on full turn – side aerial to full, stuck landing. Another strong one. 9.950

A bunch of 9.950s gives Utah 49.625 and 197.550 final score.

Mastrangelo – FX – Cal – Jim worried about declaring anything, saying that Mastrangelo has to be perfect – no, Utah already won – she has a 3/1 now? Good landing, has the height as well – it works for her – back 1.5 to layout, a little flat on layout, under control – switch side and popa are both short of split position – 2.5 twist, a crossover step, keeps front foot down. Expect that to allow them to drop a 9.725 and get higher into the 197s.

FINAL: Utah 197.550, Cal 197.225

Both teams will be quite pleased by the scores. Utah with a season high and continuing to show that beam is the highlight event for them (work to do on the other pieces to replicate this kind of score in April, but fine). Cal has a third 197 score of the season so far, which will be nice for ranking and NQS purposes, especially as we’re continuing to see teams like Georgia and LSU get these 196s. They’ll move ahead of Georgia and Kentucky with that one, and Utah will move back ahead of Denver.

Cal goes up to 197.325 as Quinn’s floor score was raised to 9.850, which I really don’t understand.
