It looked for a while like we wouldn’t have a live stream for Oklahoma, but TWU pulled through at the last minute.

Ragan Smith in the AA today. Trautman on everything but floor. Nichols on only bars. Karrie Thomas remains absent.

They’re just starting intros now at TWU, so this isn’t going to be one of those punctual starts.

Unfortunately, Sadie Bish is not competing today, which I would have enjoyed because she is one Saaaadie Bish. Also, I feel like there has been a Vincent on TWU team for 14 consecutive seasons.

Rotation 1

Johnson opens up vault for TWU with a full and a large bounce back. 9.700

Webb – UB – OU – good first cast hs – pak, high, legs together – van leeuwen, solid – short final cast hs – toe 1/2 to double front 1/2 out, small slide back. Solid. 9.900.

Lazarus – VT – TWU – a full of her own, good distance, a smaller bounce than Johnson’s, so the score should improve. 9.800

Trautman – UB – OU – good first hs – maloney, legs togehter into pak, smooth combination – rolls through hs on cast 1/2 on low – borderline final cast hs but OK – DLO, short landing, bounce forward. 9.850

Scores trending a bit high. I’ve had then at 9.850 and 9.800 so far.

Parkin’s full for TWU landed a bit shorter with a hop forward, so the score should be lower than Lazarus’s. 9.725

Deniz – UB – OU – toe on to maloney to bail, solid positions, a bit looser in legs than some others int he lineup – short cast – toe full to double tuck, stuck. Late in finishing position on toe full. 9.850

Bonzagni’s vault is a Y tucked full, good height, bounce back, tuck position looked solid, but we’re very far away from vault.

Degouveia – UB – OU – a tad close on piked jaeger catch but OK – toe on to a pretty pak – a bit late on cast 1/2 on low – FTDT, small hop. Another good one, not her very strongest. Still goes 9.900.

Northrop with the biggest vault so far for TWU, good distance and speed, large bounce back.

Smith – UB – OU -some loose back in first hs but fine – Ricna to pak is hit – also slides through the hs position on low bar cast 1/2 – good final cast hs – DLO, a bit short, small hop forward. 9.900

Woodring – VT – TWU – holds onto the stick on her full – obviously best landing of the group – a little piking and a bend to hold the stick

Nichols – UB – OU – Ray to Pak to toe on, no trouble – van leeuwen, solid – DLO, stuck with a bit of a stagger. Her usual, good one, and the cast positions looked strong today.

9.975. It wasn’t a 10 for me, but I would have probably gone 9.950, and every score in this rotation has been .05 higher than I would have gone (I had this rotation at 49.300, they went 49.525), so I wouldn’t have been surprised by 10.

(We have a fall in exhibition on bars for Oklahoma.)

After 1: Oklahoma 49.525, TWU 48.825

Good, solid bars rotation for Oklahoma. They’re basically honing the sticks and resolving a couple cast 1/2 low bar positions away from this being a postseason 49.5+ based on today’s showing. It’s close.

TWU will take a 48.825 there, a competitive rotation of fulls that would compare favorably against most of the teams in that 20-25 ranking zone. There’s not really a difference between, say, an Illinois vault rotation and what we just saw from TWU.

Rotation 2

Smith – VT – OU – lands short on her full, chest down, and a bit of a stagger forward on landing. Will want to drop that one. 9.700

Stuyniski – UB – TWU – hit tkatchev – bail, some legs apart, ends up pretty close to vertical – giant full (legs) into double tuck, can’t quite hold the stick and slides into salute. 9.725

Stern – VT – OU – good high 1.5 but has a little trouble controlling the landing with two small steps forward as she tried to tiptoe into salute. 9.875

Kunzman – UB – OU – well short on first hs – blind to piked jaeger, caught – bail, holds onto it with a little back arch – a couple full-tenth handstand issues here – giant full to double tuck, bounce forward. 9.700

Degouveia – VT – OU – one of her best landings of the season, a near stick, just comes up a little on her toes it looked like – a bit of knees – very strong.

9.975 is…enthusiastic. Though I will say we’re too far away from vault to feet categorical about the landing control.

Lazarus clips her heel on the high bar on a tkatchev but works through it. 9.525

Webb – VT – OU – came up short trying to find the landing this week, a step back and then another step to control herself. 9.775

Goyco, TWU’s fourth up on bars hits a pretty solid gienger, the most impressive point of a routine in this rotation so far, good control on double tuck landing. 9.750

Trautman – VT – OU – pretty much the normal 1.5 we’d expect from her, doesn’t have the control yet with a hop forward and then another step into salute. Otherwise it’s 2019 again. 9.875

Griffith – UB – TWU – catches way close on a jaeger but works out of it, kind of rushing through the rest with some legs and handstands – hits the FTDT with a lunge back

Schoepfer – VT – OU – stuck landing on her tucked Y1.5 – good control, solidly done. 9.950

Northrop – UB – TWU – good toe position – catches close on gienger with some legs but works trhough into overshoot – fine final cast hs – DLO, pikes down with a lunge forward.

OU goes 49.450 on vault, which they’ll take for a rotation where really only 2.5 of them hit very strong vaults, with Degouveia and Schoepfer the highlights.

It’s 48.575 for TWU on bars, where they’re just not going to have the crisp form to get into the 9.8s. Some very disparate-quality routines all bunched together in the 9.7s there too.

Oklahoma at 98.975 after 2, just short of 198 pace, and they’ll basically be like, “Wait, you know we can be a lot better than this, right?” about that pace. This is like an 80% performance versus what we’ll expect to see in April.

Rotation 3

Woodring – BB – TWU – nice loso series – switch and switch combo, pretty close to 180, lovely – kickover front, deep landing and a major lean to the side – 1.5, just does hold the stick for long enough. 9.750

Draper – FX – OU – double pike, nice form, bounce back – front full to front full, good control, a bit of knees – Really don’t need this lady talking through the routine though – MUTE TIME – good control on final pass. Solid opener. 9.875

Stuyniski – BB – TWU – side aerail to split jump, lovely split jump achieved with knee brace – bhs to back lay-pike, a wobble and a bouncy landing but saves it – switch side, good front leg, a bit crooked with the back leg – gainer full, deep with a bounc eback. 9.725

Smith – FX – OU – double pike, comfortable chest up landing, keeps her controlled lunge in bounds – 1.5 to front lay with a dance out, I’d like to see a little more clarity in showing the landing control – double pike, nearly stuck it, ended up with a little shuffle bounce. 9.875

Bonzagni – BB – TWU – cat leap to switch side, pretty solid horizontal there – bhs loso series, check, some knee position – switch to back tuck, secure, minorly short back leg on switch – side aerial, solid – round off tuck 1.5, small hop. 9.825

Deniz – FX – OU – whip to 2.5, just a tad short on the landing, which leg to a shuffle back – this routine is mostly just rolling around, but we’re too far away on the feed for it to translate – rudi to split jump, good control up into the split jump – 9.850

Michigan/Ohio State is about to get started but we’re still in chatter time.

Kunzman – BB – TWU – bhs loso loso series, very secure, knee form to take – side aerial, small adjustment – pretty solid position on switch – 1.5, hop forward.

TWU has the potential to be VERY competitive on beam.

LaPinta – FX – OU – 2.5 and got hung up in the landing, possible overdone, with a large bounce into the next state and OOB – short on landing layout in combo on second pass with a shuffle to save it –

Michigan/Ohio State has started

Mariani opens with a normal Yfull with a step. 9.750

Hinterberger – UB – Ohio St – blind to jaeger, hit – bail, short of vertical on hs – casts are OK – some feet and leg separations here and there – giant full to double tuck, step back

Koulos – VT – Michigan – good control on her full landing, minor step back – some pike position. 9.775

Degouveia – FX – OU – punch lay to front 2/1, still struggling with that landing, short and a crossover lunge – fine on the front full second pass – back 1.5 to front full was solid, well controlled. 9.825

Brenner – VT – Michigan – very strong landing on her Y1.5, goes up onto her toes to hold the landing – reminiscent of Degouveia earlier – a little bit of pike, some knees at the very end. 9.900

Adamski – UB – Ohio St – tkatchev, hit – well short on next hs – clean bail – another issue on a cast but not as big – DLO, legs apart – sells the stick

Wojcik – VT – Michigan – large lunge forward on her Y1.5 today. 9.850

Webb – FX – OU – front 2/1, a little steppy on landing, mostly under control – back 1.5 to front full, a little bouncy there as well, keeps herself in bounds – rudi, keeps front foot down. Good.

Not an awesome floor rotation for OU, also not near the intended postseason lineup. But like last season, the most things to resolve so far this year are on floor.

Webb still goes 9.925 and Oklahoma 49.350 on floor.

Aepli falls on a Maloney for Ohio St.

Brooks – VT – Michigan – nailed the landing on her Y1.5 today, very strong. A bittttt of knees in the air, a little lean to hold the stick, but no question on the stick for this one.

9.975 for Brooks. I’m with the 9.950 judge. The little bit of knees, the little lean, combined to take away the 10 for me.

Meanwhile cut to Wojcik like, “Excuse me, how many times did I have to stick and the judges were like ‘9.100’ and then you stick for the first time and they’re willing to go 10?”

Miller on UB with a pretty toe to maloney to bail – DLO, nearly found the landing, chest down with a slide-salute.

Wilson – VT – Michigan – one of her better-controlled vaults, a small step to the side – good position today – not as much distance as Brooks. 9.850.

Now, see that would I would have been fine with 9.900. The judges were like, “Oh right, we’re at Michigan…”

Swartzentruber – UB – OSU – Maloney to a high pak – VL, smallest leg break – short final cast hs – a bit whippy in DLO, chest down and a small step

49.350 for Michigan on what was a really strong vault rotation with nearly ideal vaults from Brenner, Brooks, and Wilson.

Ohio State gets through the fall on bars and ends up with 49.075, so they’re right in this.

Rotation 4 starting at OU/TWU with Trautman on beam. Good loso series, quite secure – cat leap to switch side, crooked position on switch side but hit – kickover front, nice and high, secure landing – 1.5, small slide back. Nice.

9.900 for Trautman.

Dunn – BB – OU – bhs bhs loso series, excellent extended position – split jump to split jump 1/2 very solidly done – gainer full with a step back into salute. The best I’ve seen from her on the beam. 9.875

Rotation two at Michigan – Rowland starts with a bascially stuck yfull for Ohio State, some piking and chest position

Heiskell – UB – blind to a high jaeger, nice height on pak as well – one short final cast – giant full to double tuck, stuck landing. Couple verticals, but a very clean routine. 9.850

Lowe – VT – Ohio St – a bounce back on her full but not too bad – not the height of the Michigan vaults but fine. 9.700

Mariani – UB – Michigan – clear hip to high tkatchev, hit – bail, solid vertical – DLO, bounce back. 9.825

Woodard hits beam – literally perfect switch and split leap combo – a bit of lack of control working from kickover front into beat but no problem – side aerial to full, stuck landing, a bit deep. 9.950

Swartzentruber – VT – Ohio State – lands short on her full, chest down with a bounce forward

Brenner – UB – Michigan – jaeger to overshoot, high, solid, some foot position – DLO, pikes it down a little at the end to find the stick.

Schoepfer – BB – OU – bhs loso series, secure, softer knees in the bhs than others in the lineup – side aerial through to…a little check? – switch to split leap, fine – cat leap to aerial, pulls it out pretty smoothly. 9.875

Brooks – Ub – Michigan – blind to piked jaeger, hit, was a bit crooked on the blind – hits vertical on bail, but has a loose back moment – DLO 1/1, great stick, the usual little pike in the air, not too bad. 9.925

Aepli – VT – Ohio St – very strong full, quite minor slide back, good control and direction – small slide, not the highest, but excellent

Wilson – Ub – Michigan – blind to piked jaeger, hits her foot on the bar on piked jaeger but keeps going

Smith – BB – OU – bhs loso series, no trouble, good flight – aerial to straddle, solid – beat to straddle 1/2 to korbut, smooth – bhs, gainer full, good landing. strong routine, watch out because that was stronger than Woodard’s for me.

9.975 for Smith.

Wojcik – UB – Michigan – toe on to her enormous deltchev – bail, a bit floppy in the air getting to vertical – strong final cast hs – DLO, sticks it. Nice. 9.925

Webb – BB – OU – love the way she walks along the beam at the beginning – bhs loso series, good extension, secure – aerial, small arm wave working into split jump – switch to split leap – side aerial to full, a bit off line. Good. A couple things.

Northrop – FX – TWU – double tuck, lunge back – gainer back tuck to chest, which was a delight – back 1/2 to front full, better control there – round off double pike, hit landing, chest down

Oklahoma nearly got back up to 198 with that very strong final beam rotation, ending up with 197.900

FINAL: Oklahoma 197.900, TWU 195.225

After 2: Michigan 98.725, Ohio State 97.875

UCLA/Arizona will begin soon, but the third rotation from Michigan will get started first.

Farley – BB – Michigan – bhs loso loso, very secure, some knees – split to split jump 1/2, tentative on that today with a sizable adjustment, leg up and a lean, at least a full-tenth level adjustment – side aerial to split jump nicely done – gainer pike, stuck. 9.725

Rowland – FX – Ohio State – front lay to rudi attempt, under-rotated on the rudi, possible downgrade, the judge we can see is writing down a lot – double pike, mostly controlled – switch side to popa, excellent amplitude on those elements – front lay to front full, pulls out the landing, rather low on the pass though. 9.800

Mariani – BB – Michigan – side aerial to split to straddle 1/4, a little slow into split but OK, very secure, some flexed feet – switch side looks nice – bhs loso, minimizes any issue with the smallest torso quiver – 1.5, hop forward. 9.850

Adamski – FX – Ohio St – double pike, pretty solid, some chest position, switch side to popa, 1.5 to layout, hits it, also fairly low to the floor despite pulling it around, so possible amplitude deductions – double tuck, lunge back

O’Hara – BB – Michigan – full turn, nearly checked changing direction but didn’t – side aerial to bhs, secure – split jump to stag ring, also smoothly landed – oooof side aerial dismount combo and landed the side aerial wayyyy to the side of the beam – can’t do anything off of it except for a back tuck off the mat – redoes the elemetn – side aerial to 1.5, step. That’s interesting because even though it wasn’t her intended dismount, a side aerial to back tuck is a dismount that exists. And she didn’t fall on it. So…that’s your dismount?

She goes 9.225.

Broadcast starting for UCLA/Arizona.

Jim and Amanda talking about why UCLA lost to Washington last week.

Brooks – BB – Michigan – bhs loso loso series, excellent and secure, so high – switch to switch, not the highest split positions – full turn with a check – kickover front, arm wave correction – just moving a little rightly – double tuck dismount, short with a large lunge forward. 9.675 which will count.

Hankins – FX – Ohio St – hits her full in, a bit short with a lunge forward – front lay to 1/2 to split jump, a bit of control – sits down a double tuck.

Waller with this Pride pocket square. John Court with his ribbon. Awww.

Excellent beam routine from Funk to get Michigan back on track there. Great high leaps, actually around and difficult.

Rotation 1 – UCLA/Arizona

Dennis – VT – UCLA – huge and powerful full as always though not her ideal landing control with a bounce back – good open – a bit of knees. 9.850

Leydin – UB – AZ – toe to pak, straddled position – good cast on high – blind to khorkina, nice height on that today, good a little more amplitude than she does sometimes – giant full, late – to double tuck, bounce back. 9.750

Kramer – VT – UCLA – hits her Y1.5 today, one of her better landings with a medium step to the side, just a little short coming into landing – soft knees throughout – Jim thinks it should be better than 9.750. I think 9.750 is about right, though it will be higher. 9.825.

Linton – UB – AZ – tkatchev, hit but close – toe on to bail, hip angle in the air going to position – giant full to double tuck, step back

Andres – VT – UCLA – hits a full, bounce back – some more piking and soft knees than those who will make the final lineup. 9.750

Meanwhile, Michigan finishes beam with a hit from Wojcik, a check on her series, otherwise great.

And they went 9.950 for her with a balance check.

Hendrickson – Ub – AZ – hit jaeger to overshoot, not the highest but efficiently done and fine form – good cast on high – DLO 1/1, step back. Solid. 9.825

Poston – VT – UCLA – handspring pike 1/2, bounce back, one of her better chest position days

Kane – Ub – AZ – hits jaeger to overshoot, clean in the air but she had to bend her legs and brush them on the mat swinging through, rolls through some of these blind positions – stuck double front, major cowboy but good landing – draped in a Stick Pride Flag. 9.550

Hano – VT – UCLA – Y1.5, great height and power – bounce forward, some knees.

9.900 with a full tenth bounce. High.

Brovedani – UB – AZ – blind (good) into piked jaeger, solidly done – toe on to pak, great legs together there – not too bad on cast 1/2 on low – wide arms on final cast, gets it to vertical – DLO, short with a lunge forward – strong until then.

Ross – VT – UCLA – short landing on her Y1.5 today, with a hop back, not the largest hop but was about a millimeter away from that being one of her sticks. Or as Sam says, “one smidge.” 9.900

Berg – UB – AZ – blind to piked jaeger to overshoot, smoothly done, best hs of the lineup – FTDT, hop forward. Good one.

Kyla and Hano both got their 9.900s despite neither really being at her best landing-wise. UCLA goes 49.325 on vault.

Berg’s score gets Arizona to 48.900 as they drop the one from Kane.

Kind of annoying that P12N hasn’t mentioned the meet theme at all yet. But when it’s any other theme, broadcasts talk about it ad nauseum.

After 1: UCLA 49.325, Arizona 48.900

UCLA gets away with one there for 49.325 as no one stuck and no one in the lineup will be like, “I AM REACHING MY POTENTIAL” with today’s performance.

For Arizona, Brovedani had a really good one going until the dismount, which turned her score into a 9.700 which had to count, and that’s why they ended up sub 49.

Rotation 2

Nosek – VT – AZ – full, bounce back, not as much distance as we saw from the UCLA vaults – some piking. 9.675

Hano – UB – UCLA – Ray to overshoot – hit, nice counter rotation on Ray – good final cast hs – giant full with some foot form – double tuck, holds the stick with a lean and bend at the hips. 9.825

Bellows – VT – AZ – still having that huge bounce back on her full – solid position in the air, has the power. 9.675

Kooyman – UB – UCLA – short first hs – maloney with some legs into pak – cast 1/2 on low, late hs – gooood final cast hs – DLO, short landing with a bound forward. 9.800 rather high.

Leung – VT – AZ – hilarious vault run that I appreciate – bounce back on her full, has the dynamics – a pike throughout. 9.800

Steele – UB – UCLA – maloney to pak, some better legs there – very late position on cast 1/2 on low bar – smoother final cast hs – DLO, stuck landing. Struggled on the cast 1/2 but otherwise her strongest bars routine. 9.850

Davis – VT – AZ – a smaller bounce back on her full – a little less piking – not the most distance

Kocian – UB – UCLA – good first hs – stalder shap to pak, a little loose int he pak position this week – goes after the cast 1/2 on low, ends up with a little arch – good final cast – FTDT, stuck landing.

Good floor from Wojcik for Michigan. 9.900, just landed a little short on her front pike in combo on second pass.

“I know her body is getting to the end here.” I mean, she’s not dying…

9.925.

No, Jim and Sam, that score was not too low.

Hargrove – VT – struggles to control the full with a bounce back and another step on an uncontrolled salute, but best dynamics and layout position so far.

Frazier – UB – UCLA – good first hs – maloney to pak, very strong – good cast position on low – van leeuwen, strong – DLO, small hop. Everything great until the dismount.

No Frazier on floor in the Pride meet? Then what’s even the point?

9.900

Leydin – VT – AZ – one of her very best 1.5s, small hop forward, some leg separation at the end. But if the UCLA 1.5s went 9.900, this one needs to as well.

Ross – UB – UCLA – maloney to bail, solidly done, toe shoot, amplitude on that the best part of her routine as always – good cast hs on high – DLO, perfect landing. Maybe a question on the first handstand, but otherwise excellent.

9.975. OK with it. There was that little arch when catching the bail also. She’s been just a little cleaner. Great routine of course.

After 2: UCLA 98.800, Arizona 97.700

Norah Flatley out with a migraine.

Sierra Brooks on floor for Michigan – strong full-in, finishes with double pike, slide back.

We have a detour where UCLA tries to pretend that everything is great on beam and Jim’s like, “Uh, you fall many times.” Like, we understand that UCLA is really talented on beam and is going to be fine in postseason, but you can also acknowledge that you haven’t hit the way you’re supposed to so far this year.

Gabby Wilson just hit an excellent full-in to start floor for Michigan.

G Glenn – BB – UCLA – bhs loso series, gorgeous – aerial to split jump, secure, small hesitation landing aerial? – switch to split, excellent positions – full turn, quick, comfortable – bhs gainer full, holds the stick with a lean forward.

9.950.

Orman – FX – AZ – front lay to rudi, bounce back – double pike, another bounce – switch side to popa, just a slight but under on the popa. 9.700

Sakti – BB – UCLA – she’s back – standing loso to loso, great amplitude, very solid, just a bit of feet – switch 1/2, check with a leg up, breaks connection into beat jump – full turn, another check – switch to split, quite tentative and another lean – side aerial to full, step back.

Important to get her back but that was a nervy routine. 9.750

Davis – FX – AZ – front 2/1 first pass, good control, some leg crossing – rudi to double stag, nice amplitude in double stag, controlled pass – split leap full to popa – back 1.5 to layout, some legs, fine hit. 9.800

Michigan finishes 197.350 to Ohio Sts’s 195.900

Flatley – BB – UCLA – oh she’s back. One of those bars-specific migraines? I feel that – aerial to back pike, hits it with a small lean – side aerial, strong – L turn, significant lean to hold it but she does keep her leg at horizontal throughout, because class – swithc to split – bhs 1.5, hop forward. 9.750

Hargrove – FX – AZ – double pike, nice position in the air – bounce back – lay 1/2 to front full, controls the landing, some knees at the end – short on her switch ring position – double tuck, solid, chest down. 9.725

Poston – BB – UCLA – beat to straddle 3/4, hit – bhs bhs loso, good job to hit that securely because she was listing on the second bhs and it could have gone very wrong – full turn – 1.5, stuck landing. One of her strong ones.

9.900 with a 9.950/9.850 split. I was fine with 9.850.

Cowles – FX – AZ – double tuck, good chest up landing, under control – front lay to front full, hit, controlled, a little loose in body position – nice dance element positions as always – rudi, chest down and stagger back, but a pretty nice one. 9.775

Hano – BB – UCLA – bhs lay-pike, bounces back again but a smaller bounce – switch 1/2 to beat, short of position on the switch 1/2 – split jump 1/2 from side position, nicely done, good position – 1.5, small hop forward. Hit. 9.800

Berg – FX – AZ – front 2/1, a little stagger but twisting so quickly I thought it was a full – short of position on a split element – 1.5 to front pike, small hop – rudi to split jump , best part. 9.700

Ross – BB – UCLA – bhs loso series, very smooth – switch ring with a small check into beat jump, will probably get credit but should get deducted for the check – aerial to beat, smooth, good – side aerial to full, stuck. Nice job.

The jacket Comforte is wearing today should become her signature look.

9.975 for Ross with an arm wave correction . Cool cool.

Leydin – FX – AZ – front tuck through to double tuck, nice tight tuck position – switch side to split jump full, nice elevation and position – split leap full to popa, works into it nicely to give herself the amplitude there – double pike, bounce back. 9.825

UCLA goes 49.375 on beam, which is better. This week, it was three excellent routines and three tentative routines, which is a major improvement over three excellent routines and three falls.

After 3: UCLA 148.175, Arizona 146.525

Arizona just enough issues to take away the chance for a 196 here, but it can still be a usable road score with a solid beam.

UCLA looking to go 49.425 on floor to make this a season high, and given UCLA home floor scoring, that would be a low number.

UCLA would also be looking for 49.600 from this rotation to move back ahead of Utah for #3 in the rankings on Monday.

This woman in the Pac-12 commercial says “best virgin of themselves” instead of “best version of themselves.” That was the take you used?

Jim thinks that the judges are…mad at Kyla so they didn’t give her a 10 on beam?…instead of telling the audience that she had a hesitation on her switch ring landing which takes away the 10.

Rotation 4

Hendrickson – BB – AZ – split jump 3/4, secure – bhs loso series, keeps it on the beam with a step back – cat leap to side aerial, bend at the hips to save it – huge gainer full, nearly finds the stick, little bouncy landing. 9.725

Lashbrooke – FX – UCLA – good double tuck, nice chest up landing, solid and comfortable – back 1.5 to layout, a little low on layout but good straight position – split leap full to popa, a little out of control, has potential with those positions through – controls the front foot on double pike. Her best so far. 9.850

Hargrove – BB – AZ – bhs loso series, small adjustment – pretty form and height – side aerial, strong – split jump to sheep, not quite enough closure on sheep but secure – 1.5 dismount, short with lunge back. 9.725

Andres – FX – UCLA – and we’re seeing a closeup of beam for some reason – back 2.5 to front tuck, nice job, a hair short on landing but controlled it – switch side to popa, good position, just a little under on landing position – double tuck, a foot placement adjustment – rudi, some legs, also controlled.

She’s going to be Gracie Kramer in 13 months. 9.875

Leung – BB – AZ – bhs loso series, very small adjustment – nice toes – switch to switch, a bit short – switch 1/2, another slight hesitation to beat, and not quite there on split 180 – cast to side aerial to full, off line but stuck. 9.725

Dennis – FX – UCLA – front loso through to double tuck, solid landing, chest up, strong – split leap full to split jump full to straight full, has the positions, some deduction for landing control – front full to layout, rises into layout, small hop on landing – looool rudi to an insane split jump that traveled 100 miles backward. 9.875

Brovedani – BB – AZ – beat to sissone – aerial to back tuck, off line and falls – resumes with a switch 1/2 into split, nice lift on split, check – 1.5, bounce forward. 9.250

Kramer – FX – UCLA – front 2/1 to front pike, a little bounce – back 1.5 to layout to shush, super high on the 1.5, that pass was better than last week – switch side to popa, overturns the switch side, ends up in the right place – rudi to stretch jump, strong again.

9.950. Appropriate given that first pass.

Cowles – BB – AZ – cat leap to aerial, bends to work into split jump – bhs loso series, lean correction – swtich to split jump, hits the positions, fast enough in combination – front gainer full, short with a step back. 9.750

“I don’t think these judges are going to give up a 10 today.” They’ve literally given 2 to Kyla.

Hano – FX – UCLA _ DLO, controlled landing, some chest down – front full to front 1/2 to jump that exists when you’re Fish – split leap full to wolf jump full, travels but really strong positions – double pike, small slide, a little jarred on landing. 9.950 for her.

So they were going 10 before the last pass. I was OK with 9.900 there.

Davis – BB – AZ – bhs bhs loso series, secure – beat to split jump 3/4, pretty solid extension – kicover to beat, a touch deep in kickover landing but works out of it – 1.5, small hop, some crossed legs. 9.825

Ross – FX – UCLA – whip to double tuck, good chest position, front foot stays down – back 1.5 to layout, a little bounce – lovely positions on her leap combo – double pike, short landing with a lunge.

At least I’ll give them props for still having a three pass routine for her. She could go down to two passes and get more 10s.

9.850 for Ross.

UCLA finishes 197.675, Arizona 195.375

So that’s a season high for UCLA, which they’ll take because none of the events were wows today. Some were depleted, some had small issues. They were all just sort of fine.

Arizona’s 195.375 isn’t the score they will have been looking for because they’ve been edging 196s in most meets so far.

Not even a mention of Nia Dennis’s shade fan. Which I need a documentary about.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some Penne Zellweger and Al Cap-Pacino Cake to deal with.

      1. It’s not on the big Pac-12 Network though, only on Pac-12 LA, per UCLA’s Twitter. Replay on P12 Network at 10:30 p.m. Pacific time though, so my plan is to go to sleep before the meet starts and then watch the replay unspoiled tomorrow morning my time…

  1. Thanks, TWU!
YMCA as the universal gymnastics meet song always amuses me. it’s catchy, the kids in the audience have fun, & I’m probably not the only one who did gymnastics at the local Y early on, but still. Who started it? Greg Marsden, maybe?

    1. I wonder what percentage of the MiniVan Majority that dances to that song at their kids’ gymnastics meets knows what that song is really about.

  2. It’s not a gymnastics meet until Whitney Houston wants to dance with somebody

  3. I never realized how many NCAA bar routines don’t have a single bar release until this weekend. Has it always been this way or has Ross made it more popular?

    1. It was a thing before, but a bigger thing now, for sure. I think part of it is that Shaps are so much more common in the elite and L10 scenes, too.

I think gymnasts are trying to minimize casts than specifically avoiding releases, personally.

      1. In elite, it’s also a result of the code in the last few quads. The fact that high-to-low and low-to-high transitions are required coupled with the fact that shap+pak or shap+bail can be worth either 0.1 or 0.2 in connection value depending upon the specific skills, those combinations (especially shap+pak) have become far more popular in elite than they used to be.

    2. They should do what they did with the Yurchenko-full. If no same-bar release, routine can max out at 9.95.

      1. I’d be fine with that if additional requirements were also added for routines that include a same-bar release. If not, though, I wouldn’t support it. To me, it wouldn’t make sense for the routine Trinity Thomas competes to start from 9.95 while a routine that is straddle Tkachev+bail, stoop and jump to high bar, dismount starts from 10.

    3. Alex McMurtry of Florida didn’t have a single bar release as a freshman – she scored a 10 at a home meet and there was a huge fuss all week about how her routine was constructed (made more controversial because in JO bars was always her week event).

Props to Alex for adding a single bar release as a sophomore and beyond.

  4. God bless @pasekascheng for live streaming the PAC12 LA stream. Now onto juicy things, who knows more about the gossip on Gym Scoop that NS and MP were ringleaders of a coke scandal at UCLA in 2017/2018? It reads like total garbage, but I love a good story.

  5. Oh yeah Chris, UCLA has a great beam coach. Ask the 7 gymnasts this year who have either fallen or have had no acro series. Great coaching.

  6. The number of times a judge gives Kyla a 10 with a clear deduction in the routine is an embarrassment to the sport.

  7. The number of times a judge gives Kyla a 10 on a routine where she has a clear deduction is an embarrassment to the sport.

  8. Curious…

In men’s gymnastics it’s common for them to come out as gay, but why is it so uncommon for women gymnasts to be “out”? With the number of college teams it’s conceivable close to every team has at least one lesbian on their team each year, yet you never here about it. Why is that?

I can see why an SEC gymnast might want to hide her sexuality (save a UF gymnast where it’s slightly more open/free to individuality – talking about the school not team dynamics), but what about Pac 12, B1G, Big 12 and the others?

    1. It’s possible some teams legitimately don’t have any. I ran cross country in college at a very liberal school where being any form of queer was welcomed and my team didn’t have any lesbians in any of the four years I competed. Also, just in personal experience as a former gymnast and current coach, I’ve known a lot more gay male gymnasts and coaches (at least a dozen) than female (two, and one is bisexual). I don’t know why that is, but that’s just been my experience.

      1. If a sport can have more than “its share” of LGBT athletes (Women’s college/pro basketball comes to mind), it follows that the opposite can be possible as well.

      2. There was rumours several years ago about two UGA gymnasts floating around online, but I’m not sure either of them are truly lesbians. It may have been youthful experiementation.

Not outing any gymnast here. If you want to know who I am referring to do a search of gymternet blogs from the past and you’ll find out.

    2. Because maybe, just maybe, it has zero to do with anything in 2020. Let the gymnastics and the hard work be the focus instead of diverting attention to trivialities.

      1. In 2020 there is still a huge amount of discrimination against gay and trans people. Just because it isn’t important to you personally doesn’t mean it isn’t important to others.

    3. Maybe they aren’t ready yet. Also I don’t think any gymnastics teams have a particularly encouraging environment for it – even the open ones are very heteronormative and as an out lesbian you would stand out.

To the commenter who refers to people’s orientations as „trivialities“ – this isn’t trivial. Representation does matter.

  9. Jenny Leung – VT – AZ – hilarious vault run that I appreciate – Say that again. I had to rewatch it a few times, It was glorious! lol

  10. “Like, we understand that UCLA is really talented on beam and is going to be fine in postseason, but you can also acknowledge that you haven’t hit the way you’re supposed to so far this year.”

Are they “really talented” though? They’re putting up gymnasts with built-in form deductions. Par for the course for most schools and the UCLA walk-ons are doing great, but if you want to beat Oklahoma or Florida you can’t put up bent knee LOSOs on BB (unless maybe you’re Skinner or someone similar who is both excellent in another area AND famous).

They need Flatley and Sakti to step it up.

    1. Yes, a beam line up of Glenn, Sakti, 2 of Kocian/Marz/Nia, Flatley, and Ross is easily top 3 in the country.

      1. Cool, but that’s not a beam lineup they currently have. They have Poston and Hano.

(And Flatley, Frazier, Dennis and Sakti have yet to prove their consistency, but that’s a different issue than talent.)

    1. You are thinking of Sekai Wright. Sakti has been in the lineup earlier this season and was out for awhile with some kind of injury.

  11. Is UCLA finally trimming its roster to just people who are likely to compete? With the recent performances of freshmen Emma Andres and Chloe Lashbrooke, it looks like there are only a couple of underclassmen who have yet to compete. (Mercedez Sanchez is the only upperclassman who hasn’t in four years and probably won’t, but they’re probably just letting her phase out naturally.) But it looks like the roster is tighter overall?
