There’s actually a lot to follow on this fine Sunday. I’ll start with Kentucky’s visit to LSU—in LSU’s second meet of the weekend. LSU did not follow my instructions (big surprise) and pretty much went for it with the lineups on Friday, adding back Edney on vault and Desiderio on floor. We’ll see if it’s the same today.

LSU took a big step with Friday’s performance, the first of the whole season that I would classify as a “good meet” by LSU’s standards, but now does face the most challenging remaining competition on the team’s schedule until SECs, Kentucky.

“A rear Sunday.” John’s words…

Rotation 1

Rivers – VT – LSU – full, very strong start – good distance and open position, small step back and some direction. 9.850. Correct score.

Angeny – UB – Kentucky – short first hs – blind to jaeger to overshoot, solid, some feet in jaeger – short on these cast handstands – DLO, bounce back. 9.775

Rau – VT – LSU – Y1.5 – still doesn’t have the control on that landing but she didn’t run off the mat this time, a large bound forward and another lunge to meet it. 9.750 too high.

Worley – UB – Kentucky – clear hip to tkatchev, OK, a little ragged – pak, some leg separation – cast 1/2 on low, not bad – some back and body position on casts – FTDT, chest down, little step. OK. 9.775

Durante – VT – LSU – full – not as strong as her earlier attempts – large bounce back and some piking throughout. 9.775, also pretty high for that landing.

Nixon – UB – Kentucky – good first hs – maloney to bail, short on bail vertical but nice legs together throughout that series – cast, short – FTDT, good height, small step. Solid. 9.875

Harrold – VT – LSU – gooooood Y1.5 today – finds her stick, just the knees and flatter off the table than some. Oh, on replay you can see a little step, but a good one.

Bridget, that’s a .050 deduction and you know it.

One judge has given Harrold a 10 for that vault. What life. That should be 9.900

Luksik – UB – Kentucky – blind to piked jaeger – cast hs is good – short of vertical on her bail – clean legs throughout, did rush final cast – DLO, step back. Nice.

Johnson – VT – LSU – only does the full today, pretty of course, hop up in place. Good job.

Warren – UB – Kentucky – blind to jaeger, lovely toe point, rushing some of these verticals but the bail position was very strong, landed right in handstand – short final cast – DLO, flatter off the bars but great stick.

9.925 for Johnson, who got a perfect score from one judge for a non-stuck Yfull. Just…so we can note these things.

Also 9.925 for Warren. OK now.

Edney – VT – LSU – solid Y1.5, small hop forward, pretty much her usual. Good.

Korth – Ub – Kentcuky – blind to piked jaeger, close catch on replay, didn’t see that in real time – a bit short on bail, which has been a theme of the lineup – good cast hs on hgih position – DLO 1/1, nearly sticks with a hop up to absorb the landing.

OK so anyway nothing matters anymore.

The last two Kentucky bars routines go 9.925 to bring Kentucky to 49.350. LSU goes 49.400 on vault. A good vault rotation, also some really questionable numbers for Harrold and Johnson that helped the score lift up there.

Rotation 2

Warren – VT – Kentucky – hits a full – good layout position – chest pretty well up, step back. 9.775

Johnson – UB – LSU – small arch in first hs – good maloney to pak combination, legs right together – solid cast position on high – DLO, pretty much stuck? Good after that first hs arch. 9.875

Angeny – VT – Kentucky – some trouble controlling her full, a bounce back and an extra stagger – also has solid form in her full though. 9.725

Dean – UB – LSU – good first hs – Ray, flexed feet and a bit close – a hesitation in cast hs on high, struggles up to vertical but gets there – good bail – a bit short on cast hs on high – DLO, bounce back

9.875 for that is a tenth too high. That was equivalent to the early Kentucky routines that went 9.775.

Nixon – VT – Kentucky – similar to that last one in that she has nice layout position in the air on her full but a large lunge back and another step. 9.650 ooof.

Rivers – UB – LSU – good first hs – toe on to maloney, some legs into bail, holds the vertical well on bail – well short on cast on high – hits her tkatchev, good amplitude,a little ragged – DLO, bounce back. 9.825

I love that Bridget has no idea what any deductions are.

Patterson – VT – Kentucky – hs front pike 1/2 and also struggles to control the landing, large lunge back and an extra slide. 9.800 is high.

Durante – UB – LSU – rushes through blind a little bit – good jaeger – hits pak, slightly loose – cast 1/2 on low – good final cast hs – FTDT, stuck landing. Nice one. 9.925

Worley – VT – Y1.5 – oooofers, sits down her Y1.5 – landed way short.

Shchennikova – UB – LSU _ good first hs – maloney to tkatchev to pak, legs on the maloney – rolls through hs on cast 1/2 on low – a bit short on final cast – basically a pike-lay-pike dismount, whips it and is a little lower than she would like with a full-tenth bounce back.

They should teach her the pike-lay-pike like Ranzy used to do and dispense with the pretense of a DLO.

9.750 is more appropriate there.

Korth – VT – Kentucky – hits her Y1.5 – hop forward but not too large, a bit of legs. Solid. 9.875

Harrold – UB – LSU – zuchold with small arch – good hs on high – toe 1/2 to jaeger, good toes – late on grip change – double front, small step. Fine one. 9.925 again is quittttee high.

Kentucky really struggled on that vault rotation with very little landing control and the fall from Worley, going 48.825 and it could have been lower.

A fine bars rotation for LSU there, but a few more mistakes and non-sticks than they would have liked, and still went 49.425. Durante was the highlight routine there. And Harrold and Johnson did what they had to do.

After 2: LSU 98.825, Kentucky 98.175

Rotation 3

Desiderio – BB – LSU – bhs loso series, pretty, good feet position – full turn, slightly hesitant – switch to switch 1/2 to beat, secure – switch 1/2 a bit short of position – aerial with a break, larger leg-up check – obvious broken connection before sissone – adds in a cat leap into her gainer full, hop in place.

Gets 9.850

Monfredi – FX – Kentucky – front tuck through to double tuck, secure landing – switch side to popa to wolf jump full, good distinct landing positions – double pike, stuck landing. Really strong one. Best she has done. 9.875

Dean – BB – LSU – side aerial to bhs, very small hesitation, knees on bhs – switch to split jump 1/4, that one is getting better, it was rough in the preseason – aerial to split jump, hesitant on split jump and some short position – side aerial to full, hop back. 9.825

Albores – FX – Kentucky – double tuck with a huge bounce back, steps OOB – front lay to front full was clean, good layout position and pretty well controlled on landing – nice lift on straddle elements – double pike, just some flexed feet and some chest position, but a controlled landing these as well.9.650

Durante – BB – LSU – full turn with a check – bhs loso series, securely done, some better extension – aerial and keeps her arms moving into split jump, but a little off line – switch to straddle 1/4, arm wave – side aerial to full, hop in place. 9.850

Poland – FX – Kentucky – front tuck through to rudi, a little low to the floor, controlled – BUT IS HER LIPSTICK BLUE?!?!? – front 2/1, good landing, some legs – very high straddle elements – Bridget’s like, “I don’t want them to think about being perfect, but…just like…a little more perfect than this.”

Edney – BB – LSU – aerial to sissone, short leg on sissone – bhs loso series with a little check cover arm – switch to straddle 1/4, her usual, gets to 180 but with a hip angle in the straddle – kickover, nailed – 1.5 with an uncharacteristic full-tenth lunge

Telling that the broadcast tried to do the split cam on her sissone because you can’t tell it’s a sissone because of the back leg…

Still gets 9.850

Warren – FX – Kentucky – gorgeous 2/1 as usual, just a little bit too large on that lunge – straddle elements strong – rudi to loso, very smooth – back 1.5 to front lay, hop forward. 9.875

Johnson – BB – LSU – full turn – bhs loso series with a small check – switch to switch 1/2, good lift and position – aerial with a leg-up check – 2/1, nice stick. A few checks this time, but pretty much nothing built-in to take. 9.875. But there was minimum .150 on checks, so…

Worley – FX – Kentucky – full-in, good stick with a stagger position – switch ring to switch sidefront full to layout – she’s caught in btween trying to stick and taking a controlled step, but it means she’s kind fo leaning like a balance check when she lands – double pike, step back, can’t keep front foot down, but a good one. 9.900

Campbell – BB – LSU – bhs loso series, off line with a leg-up check. LSU getting through these beam routines but most of htem are checking – aerial to split – switch to switch 1/2, great positions as always and good speed in combination, so many people make a meal of that. 2/1, bounce back. 9.800

No falls but a hesitant beam rotation to keep LSU stuck int he 49.2s.

Korth – FX – Kentucky – her usual full in, very solid landing but chest down if you want to take it – split leap full to popa – rudi to loso, lovely – double pike, lunge back, looks like she held the front foot

Kentucky gains a tenth and a half on LSU after five pretty solid floor routines compared to a fine-but-shaky beam rotation for LSU.

After 3: LSU 148.075, Kentucky 147.550

Meanwhile, Denver is depleted because Sundstrom is currently out. But it’s working out OK. They went 49.150 on vault while showing five, and 49.575 on bars with the first five hitting.

And that’s a program bars record. Before the 6th person even goes.

Rotation 4

Warren – BB – Kentucky – side aerial to bhs, very smooth – switch to straddle 1/4, bend forward lean correction landing that, almost too high on straddle – 1.5, deep landing with a bounce back. Gets away with that one for 9.775

Harrold – FX – LSU – front 2/1 with an uncontrolled step out, right to the edge but stays in – double pike, very secure landing – switch ring to switch 1/2, very nice – back 1.5 to front lay, holds the landing well, a bit of knees. 9.875

Haigis – BB – Kentucky – she does routines? – bhs loso series, pretty position int he air but a large break – leg-up wobble and a lean – switch to shushunova – good style on full turn – cat leap to aerial, lean correction – 1.5 dismount, crossover lunge.

A shaky routine but the form is more than there for her to be in this lineup for real. 9.675

Desiderio – FX – LSU – remember when everyone was obsessed that her name ends in RIO because of 2016 Olympics? – DLO, solid control – 1.5 to layout, a bit of knees, dances out – switch ring to split leap full, rushed the split leap full a little this time because she doesn’t notmally have trouble hitting those splits – double tuck, flexed feet, only a small bounce. Good. 9.875

Poland – BB – Kentucky – bhs bhs loso, small lean – one arm fhs, holds it – switch to straddle 1/4, strong position in straddle 1/4 – gainer tuck full, stuck landing. Good one. 9.875

Dean – FX – LSU – controls the landing on her double pike – 1.5 to layout, some floppy form in the 1.5 and a step on the layout, keeps it in bounds – deductions on those leap positions – double tuck, bounce back. Fine. Not her strongest. Still 9.800, not enough separation.

Korth – BB – Kentucky – one-arm bhs to loso and falls, off line, no chance to save – resumes with check to loso to beat, small adjustment landing beat – 2/1 dismount is strong. 9.150

Campbell – FX – LSU – 2.5 first pass, a little steppy, some knees – double pike landing is solid – switch 1/2 and popa are great – 1.5 to layout, pretty strong, whips around layout a little.

Worley – BB – Kentucky – cat leap to switch side, tight position on switch side, short of 180 – aerial through to bhs loso series, confident elements, some leg position issues to take – 1.5, holds the stick with a lean

Edney – FX – LSU – pretty strong double arabian today, just a small slide back – back 1.5 to layout, clean layout position – split leap full to split jump full, some short split position – double tuck, bounces back and has to put her hand down. Very strange and awkward mistake.

Bridget: “THERE IS NO DEDUCTION IN THIS ROUTINE I DON’T KNOW WHERE THEY’RE GOING TO…OH.”

Angeny – BB – Kentucky – bhs loso loso, very smooth combination, a touch of form there – aerial, pulls it out well, not the highest but you wouldn’t have known – switch to beat, arm wave correction – side aerial to tuck full, small movement, Good one.

Gets them to 49.075 on beam.

DD is just chatting with the judges about their scores NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS HERE.

9.200 and 9.700 split for Edney LOLOLOLOLOL

Thank you John and Bridget for calling out a 9.700 for that Edney fall.

Edney 9.600 for a fall. This has happened. 9.600 and she put her hands down on a pass.

Johnson – FX – LSU – good full-in – back 1.5 to layout, gorgeous, stuck landing – great height on her dance elements as always – double pike, slide back on landing.

And Kiya goes 9.975 with an obvious bounce back on her final pass.

Judging has been disqualified.

Anyway…LSU 197.500, Kentucky 196.625

Gonna need to cool down for a second about that one…we’ve got some time until Cal/Stanford.

9.6 with a fall. LORD. Arguments being made that it was a hand brush and not load bearing, but that was a hand down to stop herself from pitching forward, which is a fall.

Meanwhile Vasquez just got a 10.000 on beam, her second of the season, as Denver is about to get a 16 million if floor comes through.

And odd day for Denver as Lynnzee Brown falls on floor (BUT WAS IT A FALL?!?!?!) and the vault and floor scores end up being kind of medium, but the bars and beam scores are so high that it’s still a 197.425 final.

GRFFFFFF. Sounds like an injury for Brown. Do not accept. Do not recognize.

Also that would be truly devastating for Denver’s lineups.

Now it’s Cal v. Stanford

Alright let’s pretend nothing else has ever happened and watch this meet

Cole – VT – Stanford – holds the landing on her full, chest down and has to lean to keep the landing, also a distance deduction in there. 9.800 a high start.

De Souza – UB – Cal – blind to a nice high piked jaeger to overshoot, good toe point through – FTDT is high but deeeeeep on landing with a hop forward. Also some short casts in there. 9.750

“Sticks the landing, little hop.” Janay…

Bryant – VT – Stanford – a bounce back on her full, good direction, form and power – a bit of legs at the end. 9.800

George – UB – Cal – good counter on her tkatchev – bail, holds it to avoid an arch – little hesitation – awesome FTDT, stuck landing. Some handstands as well for her not quite as clean as usual but good finish. 9.825

Navarro – VT – Stanford – a bounce on her full, a lot more piking than the first two and not the distance, so the score should be lower, but a hit. 9.775 too high comparatively.

Green – UB – Cal – good first hs – clear hip to huge gienger, keeps legs together throughout – a little hip angle on bail but the cast hs are really nice – FTDT, lean to hold the stick. Good. 9.800, a little tight for me there.

Widner – VT – Stanford – deep landing in her full with a larger bounce back, good lift and position in the air. 9.775

Schank – UB Cal – small arch in first hs, pulls it back – piked jaeger to overshoot, nice toes – strong final cast hs on high – DLO, deep landing with a bounce forward. A few people giving away scores with dismounts so far. 9.750

Brunette – VT – Stanford – bounce back on her full as well, some piking, better dynamics.

“We’ll tell you just how sick she was after this robust routine.” No. None of this.

Watterson – UB – Cal – good first hs – pak, small leg break – toe on to van leeuwen, perfect, nice cast – toe full is perfect into stuck double tuck. Excellent. 9.925

Brunette got 9.800 as well and Stanford goes 48.950 because there’s no separation on vault scores at all. Lucky escape.

Bordas – UB – Cal – good first hs – blind to huge jaeger to overshoot, the hghest you’ll see but the position can get away from her in that, only a little bit – giant full, good, into double tuck, small slide back, basically college saluted herself out of a stick. And still goes 9.925, which is a bit high there. Balancing out the Green number?

After 1: Cal 49.225, Stanford 48.950

Stanford happy to get through close to 49 with a bunch of bouncy fulls. Cal gave away some tenths on dismounts from Schank and DeSouza but the end of the lineup saved it for a fine opening score.

Rotation 2

Schank – VT – Cal – the best full I’ve seen from her – good straight form and a stuck landing, just some distance to take. Pretty vault. 9.850.

Lawson – UB – Stanford – maloney with some legs into bail, short of vertical there – good cast on high – a hesitation on giant full into a stuck double tuck. Some solid moments there. 9.750

Bordas – VT – Cal – full, a small bounce back but good shape, a small bit of piking and not the farthest, another clean showing. 9.775

Waguespack – UB – Stanford – toe on to maloney to pak, only small legs apart there – a bit late on cast 1/2 on low – also slightly short on a cast – whips down the DLO, hop back. Good. 9.775. Not enough reward in deifference from Lawson

George – VT – Cal – finds the stick on her full, very nice vault again from her – a little deep in the knees on the stick this time, but also has more dynamics than Bordas who went 9.850. 9.875

Brunette – UB – Stanford – short first hs – giant 1/2 to deltvhev to overshoot, all hit, some foot form and legs – DLO, small bounce back. 9.750

Mastrangelo – VT – Cal – one of her stronger Y1.5s – lands a bit short with a step back but only a small step – some knees at the end. 9.875. I’d like to see George’s full score higher than Mastrangelo’s 1.5 because the difficulty difference is only .050 after all.

Micco – UB – Stanford – jaeger is good – two quite short casts early in the routine – like the bail – back layout 1.5, chest down to hold the landing. Some pretty moments on the bars, but the cast handstands will take down the total. 9.750

DeSouza – VT – Cal – solid Y1.5, a medium hop forward and some knees in the air, good one. 9.850

Bryant – UB – Stanford – good first hs – toe on to tkatchev, low but fine – pak, lovely efficient element – great cast hs positions – DLO, overcooks it with a lunge back, but def the best in the lineup. 9.750? Why are all of Stanford’s scores the same regardless of routine quality?

Clausi – VT – Cal – a larger bounce forward on her Y1.5 – softens in the knees at the end, but again fine. Three solid 1.5s to end a good vault rotation. 9.825

Garcia – Ub – Stanford – short hs – blind to jaeger to overshoot, good toes on jaeger – strong hs on high – back layout 1.5, stuck the landing, deep but good. Her best bars we’ve seen. 9.900? OK?

It’s 49.275 for Cal on vault for a strong rotation. Two pretty fulls and three hit 1.5s, so they’ll take that. Scores not sailing today, but that’s competitive with the 49.400 vault rotations we saw on Friday.

Stanford 48.925 on bars, which one again they’ll definitely take because Stanford and bars.

After 2: Cal 98.500, Stanford 97.875

Maya Bordas: I’m really honored to receive this award I’ve never heard of and don’t understand. SAME.

Rotation 3

Joe Table just described beam as “treasurut” so there’s that.

Stephenson – BB – Stanford – aerial to beat, smoothly done – bhs loso series, good amplitude, hit comfortably – split to sheep, large break on sheep with a chest down lean to the side, but the sheep jump was better than most in the hip angle department, I appreciate that – gainer full, stuck. 9.775

DeSouza – FX – Cal – double pike, a little steppy on landing – switch side to popa – back 1.5 to front full with a dance out, nice position in the air on those elements, not as loose in the legs as a lot of people who have added this pass this year – rudi, bounce back. 9.850 is a high start.

Widner – BB – Stanford – switch to switch, really nice attention to the back leg there – bhs loso series, smooth, toes pointed well – aerial to split jump, had to do the split jump blind because her hair was in her face – whhhhhatttt just happened, she was doing some split leg choreopgrahy and fell against the beam and had to muscle herself up from sideways – hop on dismount.

9.600. I would have thought they’d take “supplemental support” for 0.300 on the choregraphy beam muscle issue.

George – FX – Cal – front through to rudi, lovely, controlled landing – switch ring to split leap full, good positions, well hit splits – front 2/1, comfortable landing there as well – very strong, little to take. 9.900

Tai – BB – Stanford – bhs bhs loso, small lean correction but good toes. Stanford has some of the best beam toes you’ll see – beat to straddle 3/4, secure – 1.5, an issue there with a lunge forward, but one of her better ones on the beam . 9.775

Bordas – FX – Cal – full in was quite short this week, chest down and a major lunge forward – switch 1/2 to wolf jump full – rudi, lower but kept the front foot down – back 1.5 to layout with a dance out – fine after the first pass. 9.750.

Good thing she didn’t put her hand down, otherwise she might have scored a 9.600……….

Lawson – BB – Stanford – arabian is super strong as always – cat leap to switch 1/2, not bad getting up the switch 1/2 – minor hesitation on full turn – bhs loso series, comfortable – gainer pike, stuck. Really good. 9.875

Quinn – FX – Cal – front lay to rudi with a slide back – front lay to front full, good height and secure landing – switch side to popa, a little hoppy but good positions, a resolved leap pass compared to last time – good control on final pass. 9.825

Navarro – BB – Stanford – jump to split mount – bhs bhs loso series, lovely and very secure – check on full turn – switch to split to straddle jump 1/4 – the straddle jump 1/4 was short, the split elements were great – 1.5, not a lot on the dismount there, lands short with a hop back. 9.725.

Clausi – FX – Cal – just a double pike to start today, bounce back – switch side to popa, hits her straddle positions – back 1.5 to front full, also really strong positions on that pass, pretty twisting – double tuck is deeep with a slide back, stayed in bounds. 9.850

Bryant – BB – Stanford – huge loso series, leg-up check, minimizes it to keep the leg low, but still came away from the body – beat to switch split jump, excellent – punch front, another leg-up check, this one the leg up more – bhs bhs double tuck and stuck it. Great finish, shame about the two leg-up checks. 9.775

Mastrangelo – FX – Cal – 3/1, pretty much around, slight bounce, she completes this comfortably, I like it much better as an option – back 1.5 to front layout, strong landing – switch side to popa is the trouble spot, short of split on that popa – 2.5, a little mushy with a crossover step, but will improve on the 9.750 drop score. 9.850

Same story: Cal goes 49.275 on floor, Stanford 48.925 on beam.

After 3: Cal 147.775, Stanford 146.800

While getting through vault and bars close to 49 was good for Stanford, they’ll be a little disappointed by the same score on beam because that could have been a stronger one to help them toward 196. Cal needs 49.225 on beam to get to that 197 mark for the fourth time this year.

Rotation 4

Jones – BB – Cal – single wolf, good – aerial through to bhs loso, pretty smooth, small lean out of the loso – beat to stag ring, tentative in between the elements in that combination side aerial to full, slide back. 9.800

Cole – FX – Stanford – 2.5 to front tuck, pulls it out with a small step hop on the tuck after coming in a little short, but the 2.5 was pretty – good ring positions – rudi to a split jump, kind of uncontrolled but handles it. 9.875 is…hello…

DeSouza – BB – Cal – straddle jump to sheep with arm wave correction – aerial, lovely – bhs loso series, confident, avoids a check with a squeeze – 1.5 dismount, small hop forward. 9.900

Lawson – FX – Stanford – back 1.5 through to double tuck, good stick on landing, just a bit deep – split leap 1.5 to split jump 1/2 – lone front tuck and bounces up choreographically – double pike, step to the side was strange but not large or uncontrolled. Really good BB/FX day for her. 9.875

Clausi – BB – Cal – kickover is a little deep into beat jump, fine connection – bhs loso series, hit – cat leap to switch side, a little tight with a lean correction – side aerial to full, hop back. 9.825

Widner – FX – Stanford – good DLO control, nice power, just some chest position on landing – front lay to front full, pretty solid – switch ring and switch 1/2, good positions – double pike, secure – her best floor I’ve seen from her. 9.900

George – BB – Cal – aerial to back tuck, smoothly done – double wolf, confident – switch to split to beat, a bit of back leg on split – gainer full, stuck. Excellent. She has become so much stronger on beam this year. 9.925

Brunette – FX – Stanford – front lay to rudi, a bit out of control with a slide back but keeps it in wolf hop to split leap full, wolf hop a little indistinct – double tuck, bounce back stagger, also stays in there. 9.775

Bordas – BB – Cal – aerial, hesitation before split jump so some connection question there – bhs loso series, another lean adjustment – switch to split, some feet – side aerial is nicely done – gainer full, slide back. Let’s see what happens with the SV. It was a little wobbly there as well. 9.600

Bryant – FX – Stanford – gigantic full-in, strong form, does very well to keep the front foot down – front tuck through to double pike, allllmost brings that foot up – doesn’t shirk her difficulty expectations – switch side to popa, a bit crooked – open double tuck, strong. Great job. 9.950 and I’m fine with it.

Watterson – BB – Cal – wolf turn double is strong – aerial, holds it into beat jump with a little pause – bhs loso series with a step back – switch through to split jump – side aerial to full, small hop. She’s still fighting it but that was more confident than last week. Well now 9.900 is high given the rhythm and hesitations but evidence of what she can actually do

Navarro – FX – Stanford – back 1.5 and really struggles to get the layout connected around, quite a deep squat, so this wil be the drop score already – switch 1/2 is super nice – double tuck, chest down, stagger forward –

So Cal ends up at 197.125, which they will definitely take as a road score, and Stanford gets into the 196s after floor with 196.175, so they’ll take that one as well.

Colombo – UB Nebraska – up second – hits high piked jaeger, but a bit close – pak, small leg break – L grip giant work – double tuck hop forward

Also BTN just died on me if you’re wondering why I did one bars routine and then disappeared. Working on it.

Alright fine here we go.

Quarles – VT – MN – finishing up for Minnesota on vault – huge amplitude and good direction her 1.5 – a hop forward and then another little bouncy salute.

Apparently Houchin fell for 9.400 on bars (What not 9.600?)

Piringer – UB – Nebraska – toe on to maloney to bail with some legs throughout – a bit short on bail position – better final cast – gaint full, late to a double tuck, hop back. Wont’ be a huge score but an improvement for her.

Nebraska is able to put up Roby in exhibition on bars today, which could be significant moving forward. Has a lovely jaeger into overshoot but arches a handstand and has to come off. Still, even with that fall, they want this routine in the lineup as soon as possible.

Nebraska has to count two 9.6s and goes 48.725 on bars. Minnesota 49.150 after the 1.5s all go 9.850+

Rotation 2

Has this touch warmup been 15 minutes long? I think it has been 15 minutes long. MEET PACING.

Piringer – VT – Neb – a hop back on her full, some chest position, pretty normal. 9.700

Quaglia – UB – MN – good first hs – blind to piked jaeger to overshoot, solid, just some feet in piked jaeger – giant full to double tuck, stuck. Very strong. She has continued to improve. That was lovely. 9.875.

Verceles Carr – VT – Neb – hops forward on her Y1.5 – some knees, but not a huge bounce this week – 9.800

Willmarth – UB – MN – good first hs – Ray, good height just a little close at the end – good bail toe point – stalder hesitates on that with a large elbow break – double tuck with a hop back. First half was great. 9.850 is pretty high for the second half though. And now it’s a 9.600 which I feel like has gone too far the other way? Possible she didn’t get the dismount combo.

De Jesus – VT – Neb – can’t control the landing on the Y1.5 today with a larger bounce forward. Still fine.

Judge with earplugs in?

Loper – UB – MN – maloney to pak, lovely legs together position – cast 1/2 on low bar is smooth – solid final cast hs, losts of hand placements – giant full to double tuck, small hop –

Houchin – VT – Neb – GLORIOUS Y1.5 – nailed it today – rises up on her toes to control the landing, but everything else was ideal. 9.950 and I’m fine with that one today.

Sales – UB – MN – bail, really crisp position – good hs – blind to khorkina, very strong – hitting her casts quite well – DLO, stuck with chest a little forward. Quite good.

Hassel – VT- Neb – lands wellll short on her full with a knee down – was pretty in the air but a fall.

Lu – UB – MN – good frist hs – maloney to pak, great form – cast 1.2 on low, good try and attention to the cast 1/2 position but ended up a little late – hitting her casts so well – DLO, bounce back

Roby – VT – Neb – Hits a full when needed – a bounce back – but fine – nice shape in the air

Ramler UB – MN – great hs – maloney to pak, perfect – strong hs on low – van leeuwen, right together – handstands look good today – toe on to FTDT, stuck landing, legs just a little staggered in the stick but she brought those heels together.

9.975 for Ramler. It was close. I don’t hate the score, but it’s obvious she would have six 10s on bars in a different conference.

Ramler’s 9.975 gets Minnesota to 49.400 there for a really pretty rotation. Minnesota should be in the top…2…1…bars teams in the country.

Houchin’s 9.950 gets Nebraska over the 49 hurdle on vault with a 49.050.

After 2: Minnesota 98.650, Nebraska 97.775

Willmarth got raised back up to 9.800. Sales got raised from 9.800 to 9.900. Who knows what’s even happening?

Rotation 3

Sonier – BB – MN – bhs loso series, very solid, a wisp of knee form – bea tto split jump 3/4, not quite there on the split position, secure landing – standing loso, hit – bhs to one-arm bhs to 1.5, hop. 9.850

Curtis – FX – Neb – double pike, keeps front foot down – front full to layout, just a bit soft in the layout – switch ring to switch 1/2, well short of position on switch 1/2 – double tuck, chest down, step forward. 9.800

Unique choice by the BTN to not even bother trying to tell you what the running team total is. Because who would want to know who’s winning?

Lu – BB – MN – bhs loso series, holds it with only a shiver – good toes – cat to switch 1/2 to beat, keeps working through the combination with a lean – smooth full turn – side somi, holds it – gainer full, stuck. Did very well to avoid actual checks there. 9.925 a bit high for me.

De Jesus – FX – Neb – double tuck, good position in the air, slide back – back 1.5 to front loso dance out run – switch side to popa – double pike, pretty nice but another small slide back like on the first pass. 9.825

Loper – BB – MN – bhs loso series, solid – some knees – kickover to beat, very confident – switch to straddle 1/4, tighter on those positions than others in the lineup – back 1.5, small hop. 9.875.

Houchin – FX – Neb – high 2.5, pretty position, crossover step – switch ring to split leap full, position on split leap full was quite strong – 1.5 to front full, good amplitude going on there – double pike is a problem, deep landing and lunges back OOB, and then the second foot goes OOB as well. 9.550

Korlin-Downs – BB – MN – has to muscle her candle mount, holds it short of handstand – bhs loso and tries to style her check out with a little new leg-up choreo what you didn’t see anything – beat to split to stag ring, good elevation on stag ring and real head release – side aerial to full, stuck. Strong second half. 9.750 with a 9.850/9.650 split.

Hassel – FX- Neb – front 2/1, very well controlled – back 1.5 to layout, good leg position on lay – switch 1/2 to wolf jump full, great crisp finish and hits the positions – rudi to straddle jump, some travel back. 9.875

Sales – BB – MN – bhs bhs loso series, lovely, excellent toe point – switch to switch side, a little slow in putting the elements together but good individual skills – slight hesitation on full turn – gainer pike, stuck. 9.875

Piringer – FX – Neb – DLO, hits it, a little steppy and some chest position, but it’s around – back 1.5 to layout, very strong pass, good layout shape – switch side to popa, overturns the switch side, good splits – double pike, secure, chest down. 9.800

Ramler – BB – MN – full turn, smooth – bhs loso series, good toes, holds the landing well – aerial to wolf jump, strong – beat to split ring, excellent – side aerial to full, stuck. Nailed it.

LOL another 9.975

Johnston – FX – Neb – double tuck, slide back – double pike, wayyyy short on landing and just melts onto her knees – back 1/2 to front full is hit.

That means Nebraska will have to count the Houchin 9.550. It’s going to be a challenge to get a 196 out of this one now.

Minnesota with another 49.500 on beam. In line for a mid 197 with even just a normal floor.

After 3: Minnesota 148.150, Nebraska 146.625

Korlin-Downs got bumped up from 9.750 to 9.800, though it doesn’t affect the team total.

Rotation 4

De Jesus – BB – Neb – bhs loso series, strong, good toe point – follows with a check on choreo – straddle jump to sheep, some legs apart on sheep – wolf hop to side aerial, secure landing – 2/1 dismount, small slide. Good. 9.750

Sonier – FX – MN – split jump 1.5, gets it around well, hits her 180 – “Jennifer Aniston says they’re approving every week…?” Oh Jennifer Hansen. Got it. Nailed it. Double pike with a bounce back – front full to layout, mushy form in the layout there, a borderline tuck – does 1 .5 to layout as her final pass, which was fine. 9.725

Curtis – BB – Neb – wolf to front tuck, leg-up check – bhs loso series, good, has the amplitude, good toes from her as well – switch to split – 1.5, a little deep with a slide back. 9.750

Sales – FX – MN – double pike, controlled, chest down – switch ring to switch side to popa, hits her straddle positions – wolf jump 1.5 a little out of control on landing – 1/2 to front full, hit. 9.800

Verceles Carr – BB – Neb – side aerial with a check bend to the side – full turn – bhs loso series, secure landing, knee form – split jump to split jump 3/4, leg up check on the second one and playing with fire on the combination – 1.2, stuck landing, some knees. 9.700

Remlinger – FX – MN – double pike, mostly controlled, some chest position – switch side to popa, pretty nice lift – 1.5 to front layout, nice shape in 1.5 – double pike, similar to the first, good control, just some chest down. 9.850

Roby – BB – Neb – small hesitation in press handstand mount, but mostly good – aerial to split, nice quick work and pretty form in aerial – bhs loso series, strong – a bit hesitant on full turn but no check – switch to split, good – side aerial to full, sutck, chest forward. Very good. 9.850

Ramler – FX – MN – split ring jump full, bouncy landing, great positions – front 2/1, a little under-rotated with a crossover step dance – switch ring and switch 1/2, loverly – rudi, solid, just a bit forward on landing – 1.5 through to 2/1 was excellent. 9.825 is surprisingly low.

Houchin – BB – Neb – bhs loso series, hits it, a little squeeze to avoid a check – aerial is smoothly done – full turn – switch to split, slightly hesitant in combination, some leans here and there in the routine but moving through them today – side aerial, lovely – hop in place on dismount. Good hit. 9.850

Loper – FX – MN – front lay to rudi, great amplitude and element completion – switch ring to split full, would like to see more ring in the switch ring but has the split work – 2.5, nailed it – back 1.5 to layout with a dance out. Good.

Why are we seeing a replay of a Y spin?

Hassel – BB – Neb – bhs loso series, crisp and pretty, good form – aerial, no trouble – split jump to stag ring, right on – 1.5, stuck landing. Excellent routine. 9.875. Wouldn’t have minded that going into the 9.9s. It was really strong.

Williams – FX – MN – front 2/1, has the power and the form, a bit out of control on lunge – switch side and popa, huge elements – 1.5 to layout, strong straight shape on the layout – rudi with a slide back.

Nebraska finishes with 195.700, which does not help. Nebraska has two high scores so far this year and four meets left, so it all has to be strong from here on out.

Minnesota goes 197.400, which they will definitely take. Bars was a dream today.

  1. Dear Baby Spray Tan Jesus,

Please help LSU find landings and not completely lose their minds in a home meet.

    Amen.

  2. “LSU did not follow my instructions” LOL spencer please steal DD’s place and save LSU from coaches trying to fill every routine with the most amount of difficulty they possibly can

  3. i’m also a little worried about lsu overworking their lineups given the injury status of this team, but i think they had to use desiderio on floor because olivia gunter is injured now

    1. What position did they have her compete in? She really should be the anchor so she can rest if they get 5 good scores…

      1. she competed second i believe. i know that their goal was to get desiderio in on floor this weekend to rest kiya if they could, so maybe they’ll use that strategy for kiya and rest her if they can?

    1. Wow, rude! Spencer is correct. Sorry your precious LSU team isn’t living up to expectations this year (except Kiya) but yes, they’re incredibly overscored and are still managing to miss a high team total. If you don’t like Spencer’s analysis, leave his blog.

      1. GIRRLLLLLLLL HUSH. How do you know this is specific to LSU because Spencer is throwing shade towards Kentucky scores as well? I thoroughly love this blog, but it seems as every meet there is shade towards scoring (for everyone except for Florida). It has become constant, just enjoy the gymnastics. Goodness gracious.

    2. He’s not being a snob as much as calling BS when he sees it. All teams and fans calling out their own team’s overscoring would help equalize this situation.

  4. “I love that Bridget has no idea what any deductions are.”

I mean, she did go to Florida…

(don’t @ me, yes all the top teams get overscored but that era she was there was particularly insane)

  5. Let’s be honest. The last post is a perfect example of people hating on LSU because they’re not a “blue blood” of women’s gymnastics but they still have the best facilities and trainers in the NCAA. Take a breath, if you don’t like the scoring write a letter to the NCAA.

    1. It’s not just LSU, it’s the whole D1 NCAA and worst for the top three teams. But this happens to be a blog about a meet featuring LSU. So it’s about LSU being overscored.

      I don’t even know what you mean with „blue blood NCAA“ …. like… ??

    2. How is LSU not a blue blood? They’ve been on SEC and NCAA podiums the last 7 years? If that’s not enough we’ll have to decide OU an up and come as well.

And they are every bit as over scored as UF, UGA, and UCLA get called out as. He consistantly calls out the poor scoring regardless of team so there is no bias in play. And I say this as someone that’s generally considered LSU one of my three favorite teams of the last decade.

      1. I was gonna be real snarky, but yeah. The only reason you might call LSU “not a blue blood” is because they’ve never delivered to win a national title … notwithstanding all their “trainers and facilities.”

  6. Example comment:

“I love that Bridget has no idea what any deductions are.”

Like come on Spencer. Just unnecessary comments like this is why people are saying things in the comments.

    1. She literally said “I don’t know where the deductions are” when it was so obvious and she should know better

  7. Bridget cannot overcome the Ella Warren’s perfect double full comment. Every week man. At least say “I always say (…)”

    1. SHADDDDUPPP. It is a sports blog. If you don’t want criticism. don’t make the comments.

We all appreciate the scores and focus on college gym. However the constant complaints are unnecessary. Look at all of the blogs this season, just constant whining.

I love UCLA. They get overscored and that is something to accept with a subjective sport like this. The need to complain at every turn is just silly regardless.

      1. If our position is “overscoring is just something you need to accept,” then we have absolutely no right to want people to take gymnastics seriously as a sport

      2. Overscoring in an uncontrollable. It’s like officiating in Football, umpiring in baseball or softball. Your team and your athletes can not control it. Gymnastics has had a LOT of attention recently and it has been taken serious, so stop using overscored as a “reason” it is not taken seriously.

Judging will not change unless you go to four judges like post season and there are not enough in order to do that. So get judges off the floor and put them in a room or something, I don’t know. However, these judges are human and they make mistakes. It is just wild to sit here and watch complaint after complaint for something so trivial.

      3. And it’s gotten attention as a viral entertainment oddity, not as a sport. We frequently have difficulty getting information on scores. The commentators pretend they don’t know what deductions are. This is not a sport that is taken seriously as an athletic competition. In many ways its treated like a competition reality show. Really, it’s only the school fans who treat it like a normal sport with their unwavering team loyalty, and they often get crap from the gymternet for it (Utah and the newspapers, LSU’s fans booing Edney’s score, etc.).

The real solution is to remove the coaches’ role in selecting/evaluating judges and putting tighter rules on their interactions with the judges during the meet.

    2. No one finds anything offensive, Karen. It’s a sports blog. Spencer can say whatever he wants and we can respond to his statements. Take off the cape and relax.

  8. Since everyone is in a mood this Sunday, how about this theme for the billionth meeting of the season for Cal and Stanford…

Progressive Elizabeth Warren Bears vs. Republican rich Trumpian Cardinal.

Politics is less controversial then gymnastics scoring right?

    🙂

  9. I just find it funny it’s some random Sunday meet in 2020 where people (or is it all just one person?) decide that Spencer should all of a sudden change the way he’s been writing about out of control scoring for the entire existence of this site. And not just writing about- there’s an entire segment most weeks on the Gymcastic podcast devoted to crack scoring. Why should he change what’s been working for him?

    1. Just because he has done it this way, does not mean that someone cannot critique it.

      1. No one’s saying you can’t critique. It’s just odd that someone who doesn’t enjoy his style is hanging out here at all. And then writing as if he/she were speaking an obvious truth when the rest of us totally appreciate the calling out of absurd judging every week.

    1. CORRECT.
I’m actually glad they gave a score that is literally impossible. Maybe this will incite a crackdown on NCAA scoring. If a judge won’t deduct 0.5 for a fall, it shows blatant disregard for the code. That person should lose their judging credentials, LSU should get a deduction for DD’s interference (note her wide smile interacting with the judges while they discussed Edney’s score).

      1. How do you know DD didn’t interfere and wonder what crack the 9.7 score was? Ever think of that?

      2. Coaches NEVER call for their gymnasts to get a lower score. Besides, it was the low judge whose score went higher.

      3. It’ll need to happen at Nationals (and change the outcome) for anyone in a position of power to care.

I’m going to say it: NCAA women’s gymnastics, until it gets its shit together, is not a sport and we should not reward it with our money or television viewership.

  10. what in the ever loving minds were that one judge thinking giving Kenndi a 9.7 with her hands touching?????? and she still got a 9.6!!!! what!!!

  11. Where is the poster from yesterday saying home judging is just fine in the SEC? LOL.

That was a disaster and LSU fans should be embarrassed.

    1. Why would LSU fans be embarrassed about the judging error? As bad as judging has been, this ridiculous outcry is just as unnecessary.

      1. Maybe because you could hear the LSU fans in the audience booing her score because they thought 9.6 was too low…

      2. Because maybe they did not see her hand hit. It’s fans at a home meet. The overdramatic outcry on this board is so silly.

  12. Kiya is a great gymnast, but I just don’t liked her floor routine. Seems too…. I don’t even know

  13. While everyone debates what a fall is…

    Denver:
Alexis Vasquez just got another 10 on beam
Maddie Karr also received a 9.975 on bars

  14. Lynnzee Brown has to be carried off of the floor after landing her last floor pass short. An ankle injury, if I had to guess and she looked to be in an extreme amount of pain.
Such a sad end to a great meet 🙁

  15. I love LSU but I can recognize when shit gets crazy and today was just not acceptable. I even feel like it does a disservice to the significance of truly near-perfect routines for the gymnasts and the program, obviously they’re not complaining about the gifted tenths but I think it cheapens the exciting moment of really great routines when subpar ones go 9.9+ anyway.

That being said, this level of crack scoring definitely did not start today. It’s been a problem. What someone else said about NCAA blue bloods is 100% true. When it’s UCLA or UF everyone is just like LOL HAHA CRACK SCORES CLASSIC JUDGING SHENANIGANS LOL CAROL. The tone is typically quite different when LSU is the recipient of that kind of judging.

    1. i couldn’t agree more. so many teams are getting wildly overscored here and there and while that’s not acceptable, it seems like certain teams seem to get more flack for that than others and i definitely think lsu is one of them when their overscoring is not outrageously worse than ucla or oklahoma etc, yet the backlash for them seems to be much worse.

      1. Personally I complain more about SEC scoring because the SEC network is nationwide and I can actually see the meets, whereas PAC-12 and…whatever Oklahoma uses…don’t come with my cable package. I bet I’m in good company. I have no doubt it’s just as bad at those meets, but I’ll have to take other people’s word for it.

    2. I thought the complaining about the scoring seemed pretty par for the course until there was a routine that went over 9.5 with a fall

      1. apparently judges can take only 0.3 for a hand touch if they feel there wasn’t that much pressure which at least sort of explains it. still doesn’t justify a 9.6 with the additional deductions in the routine, but it does make it a little (not a lot) more understandable.

      2. Except it was a 9.5/9.7 split which means one judge thought it was a hand brush AND the routine was otherwise a 10, which…no.

  16. Before everyone says ” BUT UCLA AND OKLAHOMA”, they’re not competing today so I’m not talking about them. Today I am talking about LSU. We all know reputation scoring is a thing and UCLA and Oklahoma get their fair share, but really the brownie points LSU gets seems insane to me.

When I saw the scores only, I thought “wow, Kiya did AMAZING.” But after looking at the actual routines, I was baffled. Reading through Spencer’s comments here too, I couldn’t help but feel sad that LSU is pushing Kiya to be the next big thing.

She is a phenomenal gymnast, especially for being a freshman, but those scores are just no.

WEEK AFTER WEEK she gets 9.975 when there is a VISIBLE lack of control on her floor passes. Her foot literally slides and judges go TEN. 9.975 means one judge gave her a ten, and should be chastised just as much as a flawed 10.000 routine because one judge still went there. Her tumbling is dynamic, but a deduction is a deduction. TAKE THE FREAKING DEDUCTION WHEN HER FOOT SLIDES.

On Vault? She hopped on her landing and a judge still gave her a 9.950 (perfect for a yurchenko full). ???????????????????????????????????????????

Don’t even get me started on Bars or Beam too. We complain about UCLA’s crack floor scores, but look at these “subtle” gifts to Kiya and LSU. It’s laughable at this point. It’s not one gift on one event … she’s getting bumps on every event.

Ruby Harrold’s bars are exciting, but the one she showed today was by far not her best. Step on the dismount, sketchy handstands. We are already ignoring some of her form issues, so at least take these VISIBLE mistakes.

    1. I also feel that way about Kiya. She is very talented but it’s like they aren’t even bothering to judge her actual routines – they just give her the score she *could* get if she hit everything perfectly.

And in no world do people complain more about LSU‘s overscoring than UCLA‘s. I think OU‘s could use a bit more attention personally.

  17. Vault way high. Burch and Hall at Utah. Better vaults and they go under 9.9. No more comments about Utah over scores

      1. Check out this entire season. Utah scores with very few exceptions have been (per live blogs here and college gym news)critiqued as reasonable and appropriate. Often stated to be underscored. Both of the vaults mentioned above were 10 vaults and stuck. Minor form issues thus the under 9.9 scoring. As stated “in the SEC those would have gone 10”. Compare Skinner in past years to kyia. In 3 years she only got 2 10’s. Utah gets an occasional bump but usually at a meet that is already “cracky” so both sides are benefiting Nothing compared to this crack fest or the Georgia fiasco. Adding in UCLA Florida and Oklahoma. That was evidenced this week vs Oregon St. real deductions were taken

      2. @JP ( who is probably not going to come back and read this ):
I agree with you that Utah gets fewer dramatic overscores than other top teams. I can think of a lot of reasons that judges don’t go 10 for Utah which are good reasons, but then don’t get applied to other schools.

I DON’T agree that “don’t complain about Utah getting overscored ever again” is a fair takeaway.

  18. Nobody talks about the cool stuff gymnasts are doing. They just bitch about scores. If you look at the rankings they’re about right so scoring must be pretty much ranking things. Even if you think they aren’t.

  19. In the scoring debate one things is clear –

Minnesota is good and earns their scores. If they were in the SEC or Pac 12 (or Oklahoma) they would be getting 198s. The Golden Gophers may be the best overall bars/beam team in the NCAA in 2020.

If they can ever stop getting underscored on floor the Gophers can definitely be a favourite to be one of the final four teams at nationals. I can’t figure out why the Gophers are underscored on floor having watched the routines they are perfectly acceptable.

Minnesota, Alabama, LSU, Kentucky and Denver might be battling for one spot (assuming OU, UCLA and UF perform as expected).

  20. There was a completely incompetent judge today at Minnesota who kept giving 9.9 and 9.8 start values to routines that are exactly the same as routines in other weeks that get 10 start values (and from watching the routines, it wasn’t a situation of missed connections). That is why there were three routines with scores that were raised. Jenny put in inquiries on four routines and had multiple conversations with earplugs judge (aka the head judge) and the only one that did not get raised was the Sales beam score where the start value was not at issue. A judge they cannot figure out the start value on three different routines should not be judging.

(Also, as an aside, I totally support why the judge was wearing earplugs as it is way too loud in there. I may bring some myself next time.)

  21. So yesterday…. (sorry not sorry), 2 Utah gymnasts fell on floor and both went 9.15 or something. I didn’t see the fall today that went 9.6. If a fall is supposed to be a .5 deduction… as we know from the UW/UCLA meet, math is hard.
Anyway, enjoy these exceptional athletes. Maybe scoring will make sense once the regular season is over. One can only hope.

    1. It did not look like she was ok and we were like 30 feet from her in the stands. It was so sad. She crashed a double pike which she NEVER does so maybe an Achilles that snapped on take off. Devastating to see her in such pain. Lit a candle for her tonight.

      1. We must have been sitting close to each other and I also thought Achilles or ankle and that her season is probably over. Such a shame!

  22. LSU scoring…. that’s all. Also, I was the DU meet yesterday, the atmosphere was really great and it was really fun until brown’s fall. I’ve never heard a sporting event grow that silent ever, it was an experience. Unfortunately left a bad taste, but still an amazing meet for Denver
