Double-duty on the Pac-12 meets this afternoon.

Score goals at Utah/Washington: Utah is looking for 197.450 to move back ahead of Michigan and LSU and retain the #4 ranking for another week. Washington is looking for 196.875 to move ahead of Kentucky for 12th place.

Score goals at Arizona/Cal: Arizona is currently sitting in 26th and could move up as high as 23rd with a season high (currently 196.150). Cal’s home scores are already solid so the team will be at 9th on Monday regardless of what happens here, but a huge number would help lift the possible NQS ceiling for next weekend’s visit to UCLA.

No Kyana George in lineups today for Cal. Quinn replaces her on VT/BB. Jones replaces her on UB. Schank replaces her on FX and replaces Jones on BB.

Why is the Pac-12 Net showing this highlight reel of basketball instead of the start of the Washington meet?

These Cal children talking about how they grew up watching McKayla Maroney…

Evan reports to us that Kyana should be back next week and that Talitha Jones with a possible injury working a Y1.5 on vault.

Rotation 1

Hoffa – VT – Washington – lunge back on Yfull this week

O’Keefe – UB – Utah – toe on maloney to pak, only a very small bit of legs at the end, pretty solid 1/2 turn position on low, good handstand on high – hop forward on double arabian. 9.825

Schank – VT – Cal – strong full, small slide back – good chest up landing

Copiak – VT – UW – small hop back on her full, some feet

Kane – UB – AZ – jaeger to overshoot, nice toes, not the highest but fine – good cast – late 1/2 turn into double front, major cowboy and a hop.

Quinn – VT – Cal – bounce back on her full,

LeBlanc – UB – Utah – late blind into a jaeger to overshoot, nice height on jaeger – good handstand on high – DLO, pace back

Swanson – UB – AZ – hip angle in first hs – giant full to tkatchev, hit, somewhat low – leg bend and separation on pak – DLO, whippy and pikes but holds the landing securely

Bordas – VT – Cal – yfull – small hop back – good open position, some better control than we’ve seen, nice

Isa – UB – Utah – Ray, hit – bail holds the handstand – toe full to immediately DLO, tries to hold the stick semi-hilariously as she nearly bends all the way over and touches her forehead to the mat as she tries to hold it.

Roberson – VT – UW – beautiful full in the air but a bigger bounce back than her usual this week.

Brovedani – UB – AZ – back in the lineups today – clean piked jaeger – toe on with a large arch, pulls it back but a major form break – pretty pak – good hs on high – DLO clean, large lunge back

Paulson – UB – Utah – maloney to pak, small leg break – rushes cast hs on high – giant full, a bit late into double tuck, hit

Mastrangelo – VT – Cal – ooooh a stick on the Y1.5 for her – some leg things and a lean to hold the stick but definitely the best she has ever done. Whoa. 9.950 is higher than I would have gone.

Thompson – VT – Yfull, leans to hold the stick on that one, legs very far apart but nice vault

Hendrickson – UB – AZ – nice toe point on jaeger to overshoot, good toes – has a back arch on final cast hs – pulls it back well

DeSouza – VT – Cal – nails her Y1.5 as well, also the best I’ve seen her do. I would say that was stronger than Mastrangelo’s form-wise. 9.900. That’s odd to me. She does have that leg break on the table though, so if they see those flash apart. Also when was the last time an NCAA judge took for legs on the block…?

REALLY nice stick on the FTDT from Reinstadtler on bars for Utah.

Leydin – UB – AZ – pak with some straddle position – short on a cast on high – 1/2 into khorkina, nicely done – this camera angle was insane?

Tessen – UB _ Utah – good first hs – blind to piked jaeger, strong – bail, good legs together – FTDT, small step back. Good.

Clausi – VT – Cal – WOW – a third stuck 1.5 in a row – another excellent vault rotation for Cal this week. This was the best of the three in the form department. And she goes 9.950 as well.

49.475 on vault for Cal matches the score from last week, which was a team record. The 1.5s were stronger this week, though they didn’t have George’s full, so the fulls weren’t quite as good. Three big sticks on those 1.5s. Couldn’t have done those any better.

Berg – UB – AZ – blind to piked jaeger, super high into overshoot, strong – short cast hs on high – FTDT, holds the stick with a lean.

After 1:
Cal 49.475, Arizona 48.775
Utah 49.300, Washington 49.050

Utah hit bars just fine (except for that weird Isa dismount), a few more steps and form errors and of course they weren’t competing inside a crack factory this time, which also affected the ultimate event total.

We’ll see if Cal can keep up the pace from that huge vault score this week. Things sort of petered out after that big vault score last time around.

Washington a little iffy on vault today with fewer sticks than we expect so will be pleased to get out of it with a 49. Arizona would have wanted higher on bars, but we saw some unexpected things like handstand arch giveaways.

Rotation 2

Soloski – VT – Utah – short chest on her full today, step forward, also piked down a little more than her normal. 9.750

Nelson – UB – UW – blind to a hit jaeger to overshoot with some legs, a close catch with elbows – solid cast handstands – giant full to double tuck – stuck landing, great second 1/2. 9.850

Reinstadtler – VT – Utah – starting to control the bounce back on that full but still a fairly sizeable one – great height and form. 9.800

Davis – VT – AZ – good full, slight piking, minor hop back. Good.

Desouza – UB – Cal – piked jaeger to overshoot, clean, nice position – FTDT with a shuffle back. 9.775

Hall – VT – Utah – pretty big lunge forward on her Y1.5 today, a leg break in the air. 9.850 pretty high.

Swanson – VT – AZ – bounce back on her full, also some pike shape throughout

Green – UB – Cal – good first hs – clear hip to gienger and can’t catch the gienger – fall

Brooks finishes UB for Washington with a good cast on high – giant full to a stuck double tuck.

Isa – VT – Utah – hit full, clean body position until some feet at the end, small hop. 9.775. Some distance scoring here.

Hargrove – VT – AZ – like her layout shape on her full, hop back – Evan, I disagree. She was more laid out than Swanson.

Thompson – UB – UW – blind to jaeger, a bit tight position but solid catch – small arch on high bar, clean bail – FTDT, stuck. 9.900. Scores really rising for Washington on bars…

Schank – Ub – Cal – very pretty piked jaeger to overshoot – clean legs throughout – stuck DLO. Nice routine, should be a big score. 9.900

Burch – VT – Utah – pretty solid control on her Y1.5, small hop to the side and a bit of a leg break in the air.

Watterson – UB – Cal – good handstand to pak – strong cast on low – toe on arich a small arch – van leeuwen is good but she falls on her toe full so Cal will be counting a fall on bars. Never mind that keeping things going after vault.

Tessen – VT – Utah – holds the stick well on her Y1.5 – some deductions to take for dynamics, 9.925.

Leydin – VT – AZ – also a really strong stick on her Y1.5, the best I’ve seen her do. 9.975. Interesting that they were willing to go higher there than for the Cal stuck 1.5s, all were sticks with a bit of legs. Pretty equivalent.

Copiak – UB – UW – piked jaeger to overshoot, good extended position – small arch on high bar handstand – DLO, shuffle back. 9.900. These UW bars scores are quite high.

Utah 49.225 on vault to stay around 197 pace.

Cal got an important hit out of Maya Bordas in the fifth spot with a stuck dismount, very clean. Now they need one out of Grace Quinn to avoid a disaster rotation – toe on to tkatchev, hit – short cast hs on high – straddle in pak, a bit late on cast 1/2 on low – handstands will take away the score, but she sticks her FTDT to give them a hit.

After 2:
Utah 98.525, Washington 98.475
Cal 98.125, Arizona 97.975

Cal gets out of counting a fall on bars and stays above 196 pace, but this is not going to be the meet score they were looking for. Arizona got a really important 49.200 out of vault to get back on 196 pace, so this could very well be the meet they were looking for depending on how the next two go.

Utah/Washington is clooosssse after 2.

Brooks – BB – UW – kickover to bhs, hit – switch to split, hit, a bit tight on position – aerial to beat jump with what I would call a pause in between – gainer full, stuck with some chest position – 9.875. Rissssinng…..

Desouza – BB – Cal – hits sheep jump, angle – secure bhs loso series – hit full turn – 1.5 with a lean-salute-ish. Good. 9.800

Paulson – FX – Utah – secure landing on double pike – front lay to front full to stag, pretty flat on those elements – switch to switch 1/1, good split positions – back 1.5 to layout, solid. 9.850

Washington – BB – UW – bhs loso, secure landing – side aerial, mostly solid, bit of an arm wave – hits her straddle elements – stuck dismount, good. 9.925

Very smooth beam routine for Clausi for Cal. Right on with all her acro landings – switch was crooked and a hop back on full dismount. 9.850

Hoffman – FX – Utah – DLO is well short with a hand down fall – good rise into straddle position – back 1.5 to a clean extended layout.

Bordas – BB – Cal – aerial to split jump, good height – extended and secure bhs loso series – switch to split jump, good switch – side aerial and falls, was going very securely before that

Nelson – BB – UW – bhs loso series, small lean, some bent knees – split leap to split jump 3/4, short of split on that 3/4 – 1.5, stuck. 9.900 is not doing enough to evaluate short split positions.

Randall – FX – Utah – double tuck, very secure landing – switch side to popa to wolf jump full, good finishing positions and clean elements – double pike, just a tad deep in the knees in landing – back 1.5 to layout, short landing with a little slide shuffle correction. 9.875

Important for Watterson to get through a hit beam routine following a fall.

Copiak – BB – UW – lean to the side on her loso series – side aerial to full is stuck. 9.925.

O’Keefe – FX – Utah – double pike, good toes, small slide – front lay to front full, fine with a small crossover step – switch to split leap 1.5, a little steppy to just pull that around, exceptional split position – back 1.5 to layout,

Grace Quinn rather checky on beam but got through.

Berg – FX – AZ – front 2/1, comes up a hair under rotation but covers well with a smaller step, good switch, just a bit short on her split jump full – 1.5 to front tuck, hit – rudi to split jump, a bit out of control on the jump

Vandenkolk a little shakier on beam for Washington but it will probably still be 9.900 given how this rotation has been evaluated. Yep, I was right. Several checks in that routine.

Schank very solid on her bhs lay-pike, really nice – sheep jump, just needs a bit more closure of feet to head there. Not a high score for Cal on beam by any means, no counting fall.

Soloski – FX – Utah – DLO, secure – front lay to front full, a bit bouncy – back 1.5 to layout, very crisply done.

This is already a program-record beam score for Washington before Roberson goes.

Roberson – BB – UW – switch to switch split jump to split jump, nice rise – standing loso loso, under control – gainer full, high and stuck. Great job. Considering what the scores have been…

Bionic Victoria Salem just hit a really nice beam routine in exhibition for Cal. Something to think on.

Another 10 for Roberson. You knew it would be after that rotation scoring.

Reinstadtler – FX – Utah – back 1.5 to layout is clean – switch to split leap 1.5, gets it around – double pike, secure – minimal content but lovely presentation.

9.975?!?! Lineup order scoring. a Pretty routine that would have gone 9.850 if she were up second.

After 3:
Arizona 147.100, Cal 147.025

At this point, this is just a drop meet for Cal. Arizona still alive for a really important road score.

Washington 148.125, Utah 148.075

It’s worth pointing out that the high scoring of that Washington beam rotation was about the equivalent of the scoring of the Utah beam rotation at UCLA last week. It won’t get as much attention because everyone wants underheralded teams like Washington to get big scores, but it was definitely crazy. With the insanity of how that floor rotation scoring ended as well, this final rotation is going to be something…

Rotation 4

Hendrickson – BB – AZ – beat to split 3/4, a tad short of split, not too bad – – bhs loso series with a lean check, some bent knees – side aerial, strong – switch to korbut with a pause in between the two elements – gainer full, hit.

DeSouza – FX – Cal – double pike, solid landing, chest a bit down – switch side to popa, around – back 1.5 to front full, out of control on landing with a lunge, keeps it in bounds – rudi, hit. 9.775

Hargrove – BB – AZ – bhs loso, nice amplitude in that series – cat to side aerial, secure – full turn, check adjustment – split jump to sheep, some back leg on switch

LeBlanc – BB – Utah – switch to split 1/4, a bit short of split on the 1/4, secure loso series – aerial, small check before split jump – 1.5, lunge forward. 9.825

Brooks – FX – Washington – hits her double front, short with a step – nice rise on her layout in the middle pass – switch ring to wolf jump full, some feet but not bad – front lay to front full, secure, a bit of knees. 9.850

Burch – BB – Utah – good full turn – bhs loso series, solid landing, a bit of feet – split jump to stag ring, small shuffle forward – cat leap to aerial, solid – gainer full. 9.850

Ruttan – FX – Washington – 2.5, bit of a slide – some leg position – back 1.5 to half to double stag, a tad piked in that half – split leap 1.5, pulls around the rotation, doesn’t show the full 180 – double pike, little rebound. Good. 9.825

O’Keefe – BB – Utah – side aerial to loso, secure – switch to split jump, good back leg – cat to side aerial to full with a lean forward to hold the stick. 9.900 for a much better routine than she got a 9.900 for last week.

Cunningham – FX – Washington – front tuck through to double tuck, chest up, good control – switch 1/2 to wolves, good rise – double pike is a bit steppy, but another solid one.

Grace Quinn with easily her best landing control of the year on floor for Cal.

Isa – BB – Utah – good candle mount – kickover front, a little too deep but secure into beat jump – bhs loso, nicely done – balance check on choreography – straddle to staddle jump 1/4, nice amplitude – gainer full, stuck. Pretty work. 9.950

Washington – FX – Washington – nice tight tuck position, just a little slide back – front lay to front full, good extended position – double pike, chest up, nice control there. 9.925

Schank anchoring floor for Cal, just landed exceptionally well on a double pike.

Randall – BB – Utah – bhs loso series, smoothly done – rulfova right on today, good – 1.5, stuck landing. Pretty. 9.950

“I’ve seen so many routines just this weekend that I would consider perfect.” – Amanda. Hard disagree.

Roberson – FX – Washington – front 2/1 to front tuck, strong, just a bit of a bounce – switch ring to wolf hop full – rudi to a super high and lovely loso – 9.875

Paulson – BB – Utah – side aerial to loso series, also secure – switch to split jump, back leg on split jump – beat to side aerial to full, stuck.

9.950 for Paulson witha 10.000/9.900 split. That was a weaker routine than from either Isa or Randall, soo…..

To answer Amanda’s question, split positions. It’s always split positions. Also flexed feet is an option.

Hoffa – FX – UW – good full in – chest a little forward, presented to cover – front lay to front full – split leap full to wolf jump full, solidly around – double tuck, good controlled landing.

She would need a 10 to tie.

This meet was a bit of a two-face in that the first half was kind of normal and then deductions stopped being a thing in the second half…

Utah goes 197.675, which will help the NQS project.

Hoffa’s 9.925 places Washington at 197.600, a casual 2nd-best-score-ever for Washington.

Normal normal stuff.

Cal got a good floor score to beat Arizona, going 196.400 to Arizona’s 196.275, a throwaway score for Cal but a huge development for Arizona.

  1. Kyana is in a boot, Alma had surgery, and it appears Talitha got injured in vault warmups. This is going to be a tough meet.

  2. Lol same about them growing up watching McKayla, I feel old and I’m only 24

  3. Anyone know who’s commentating for the AZ @ Cal meet? The vibe is like… a gymfan watching a meet with some friends/family and trying to get them into it? It’s different from more “official” commentary, and while I reserve the right to change my mind as the meet goes on, I think I like it?

    1. It’s Evan Heiter – he’s a former Michigan gymnast and definitely a gymternet member.

  4. Huh, this Washington home cookin is going to turn me into one of those annoying Utah fans (and Utah’s not even one of my top 5 teams)

    1. Agree second bar routine for Washington was a 9.8 at bed. 2 small breaks and a hop. 9.9 is crazy

    2. Agree second bar routine for Washington was a 9.8 at bed. 2 small breaks and a hop. 9.9 is crazy

      1. The beam scores are totally bat-crap crazy. Worse than the UCLA fiasco. Leans and slight bends are deductible. This is a joke. Washington is the new UCLA. Granted the routines were were good but this is insane

      2. Did they ship the judges from the UCLA/Utah meet for this one maybe?

      3. Do you think they shipped the judges from last week’s UCLA meet?

    3. Go ahead and cheer for Utah. Washington showed up and showed out and if you can’t see that, then you need your eyes checked honey.

      1. No one said they didn’t just that beam was a crack job in the scoring

      2. LoL!!

I mean, they’re good – but like average good. Scoring across the board was CRAZY. That was like a 196.4 performance.

I CAN’T WAIT until next weekend when they get a taste of Oregon State’s judges who have shown to be some of the tightest this year.

    1. Reinstadler is technically perfect and gorgeous. What was your issue with the routine?

      1. The issue is that the start value was only 9.9. The judges missed it completely.

  5. So after that beam rotation, does that mean Utah is automatically going to get all 10s?

  6. In her time at Florida, Rachel Gowey has probably had about a dozen beam routines that were easily superior to that 10 just given to Roberson.

    1. Roberson had a gorgeous routine. Maybe Gowey would get a 10 if she were last in Florida’s lineup 🤷🏽‍♀️ doesn’t she go 2nd or 3rd?

      1. The 9.9 scores of Washington not as good as O’Keefe. Compared with the Washington 3 O’K was a 9.95 The judges are deciding the meet. Too bad. Could have been a good one

  7. *front foot takes a step*
commentator: “that was a good strong landing”

    ALL THE PRESENTS FOR WASHINGTON!

    1. You apparently missed the impossible score for Reinstadtler, 9.975 on a 9.9 SV routine.

      1. Reinstadtler’s routine: 1 1/2 to front layout +0.2; Gogean D, +0.1; double pike, +0;1 plus 0.1 last past bonus. Total bonus: 0.5, 9.4+0.5 = 9.9

      2. If you’re going to say “wrong” after someone’s calculated the D score for you, you need to explain how they are wrong and show the math 🙄

      3. you’re missing the switch ring into gogean which is an extra tenth. Her routine starts from a 10.

    2. Uh, look at the routine, it’s described above. It’s a 9.9 incorrectly awarded a 10.0 SV

  8. Washington always has bias judges. Actually surprised Utah pulled it out just for that reason.

  9. WTF did i just watch.

No way Washington should have gotten that score. I hope they don’t think they are worthy of it and continue to work.

    1. Wtf did I just read? You hope they don’t think they are worthy and don’t continue to work hard ?

      1. LOL, no. Like, I hope they don’t think that score was deserved because they still have a lot of room to grow and should it be at their best by post seaon

    1. Next time, look at her piked down dismount and the arm wave and bend over at the waist.

  10. Completely disagree, Spencer.

Washington’s beam was nowhere near as clean as Utah’s at UCLA. I’m not a fan of either team, but I think the comparison is a bit off. While you may take issue with leap or foot positions w/ Utah, Washington had clear balance checks to go along with their leap and foot positions.

I find it hard to take your opinion serious on certain teams because you demonstrate a clear bias for teams such as UCLA, Florida and LSU.

    1. And every Washington beam dismount has feet 3 feet apart, hips bent at the waist and squatting. In no world should that be scoring over a 9.9. Compare that with Utah dismounts with legs together and chest up high. Different category of presentation altogether.

      1. Agree completely.

Up until last year, Utah was the master of the Squatty Potty landing and now Washington has it.

I wonder if Baely brought it over.

  11. Doesn’t Reinstadtler’s routine: have a split leap connected to the Gogean, to give her another tenth so starting at a 10?

  12. no the master of the squatty potty landing is Maggie Nichols. Everything else is so gorgeous no one comments.
