Just three non-simultaneous meets on the docket today, and I’m not really sure I know how to handle that situation. So, like, during a rotation break…what does one…do?

I’ve pretty much been thinking of this as a “not Washington’s year…” situation with regard to regionals, but there’s still time (a little bit) if they can start 195ing.

Rotation 1

Horton – VT – AZ – large bounce back on her tucked Yfull and an additional step. 9.675

SKW – UB – UW – piked jaeger to overshoot, good form and amplitude – nice cast hs on high – front giant 1/2, small hesitation, into double tuck, stuck. Really nice work. 9.875

Herry – VT – AZ – medium bounce back on a layout yfull, solid. 9.725. Normal score for that, but compared to Horton…? She had a higher SV and better landing and and and

T. Brovedani – UB – UW – blind with small pause into piked jaeger, hit – bail, rushes a little on position, keeps legs together – short cast hs on high – giant full to double tuck, lunge back. I’m really enjoying this camera angle that cuts off all the handstands. So much.

Z. Brovedani – VT – AZ – I’m enjoying the Brovedani battle here with Zaza returning, but she had a bad one on vault, lands a full basically face first

Long wait on Talia’s bars score. 9.6 with a a 10.0 start from one judge, but a 9.800 from the other judge. 9.700

Wickman – UB – UW – short first hs – blind to piked jaeger to overshoot, hit, not quite as much amplitude as SKW but solid – a short cast – giant full to double tuck, holds the stick. Good work. 9.725

Nosek – VT – AZ – a hit Yfull, medium bounce back – pretty solid layout shape – the normal they needed. 9.750

Bowles – UB – UW – shortish first hs – deltchev to overshoot, strong – some short casts in here – better finish position on her giant full into double tuck, small step. I see 9.650 with a 9.9 start from one. Ends up 9.725. We can see the score from the harsher judge and the total always ends up higher. Large splits in this rotation.

Castles – VT – AZ – hits a full, smaller slide back though not as much distance as Nosek, a little more pike. 9.800

McNamara – UB – UW – blind into jaeger, good toes in the air, loses foot form on catch – great cast hs on high, held for hours – pak, leg apart deduction – casts look stronger – giant full into double tuck, stuck. 9.800

Hargrove – VT – AZ – best amplitude of the bunch on her full, small bounce back. 9.825

Thompson – UB – UW – blind to jaeger, hit, some feet in the air – solid cast – hits bail, slight angle in the air but gets up to vertical – some feet here and there – FTDT, holds the stick with an arm wave. 9.850

Washington will have the lead after 1.

After 1: Washington 48.975, Arizona 48.775

That was a lotttttt better from Washington. Like a lot. That was a real bars rotation. Arizona pretty iffy on those early fulls coming off the COVID break but better than last time.

SKW’s score bumped down from 9.875 to 9.850 and the bars total to 48.950. So Washington just got reverse Oklahoma-ed.

Rotation 1

Thomas – VT – UW – ylayout, with a little more control this time, small step back. 9.600

Ohhh, we had escaped a full rotation without commentary.

Linton – UB – AZ – small arch on first hs, pulls it back – tkatchev, hit but low – toe on to bail, legs apart there – shortish final cast hs – DLO, bounce up in place. 9.800

Weiss – VT – UW – Tsuk tuck 1/2 and struggles to control the landing more this week with a bounce forward and extra step. 9.525

Kane – UB – AZ – short first hs – blind is late into jaeger to overshoot, hit solid releases – better casst hs on high – late blind change again into double front, finds stick. 9.825

Smith – VT – UW – adds back the tucked Y1.5 for a 10.0 start – large bound forward but a hit. Important to have in there. 9.800

Hargrove – UB – AZ – giant full to tkatchev, hit, looked off rhythm on catch and can’t hold her next cast handstand to vertical, goes over and has to correct but doesn’t come off – bail is fine – FTDT, step back. 9.350

Cunningham – VT – UW – very clear and strong stick on her Yfull – just a little pike and needs to bring those heels together after sticking. Well done. 9.850

Raskin – UB – AZ – short first hs – blind to piked jaeger hit – initiates her blind 1/2 turns after handstand – bail is solid, small hip angle – better cast position there – blind to front 1.5 dismount. 9.700

Thompson – VT – UW – doesn’t get the stick on her full today with a small two-step shuffle back. 9.825

McCabe – UB – AZ – solid first hs – blind to piked jaeger, hit, some feet – short cast – giant full is late into bail, hits vertical, small leg break – DLO, gets the stick. 9.800

McNamara – VT – UW – full on back tuck vault – better direction today, just a little off line, chest up more as well, bounce back. Damn gets 9.875 for it.

Deets – UB – AZ – short first hs – giant full to tkatchev, a bit more ampltiude on hers – good cast hs – hits bail vertical position pretty well – stronger final cast hs – DLO, small step. Good. 9.775

48.950 for Washington on vault, another season high and huge improvement over previous weeks. Having the full difficulty from Smith helps a lot.

48.900 on bars for Arizona without counting any major mistakes. A solidly medium 9.8 of a rotation, better dismounts but a lot of late pirouettes which would have been some of the major deductions. Castles over on a handstand and falls in exhibition. Zaza Brovedani hits basically the best routine of the rotation in exhibition.

After 2: Washington 97.900, Arizona 97.675

Rotation 3

Stauffacher – BB – AZ – bhs loso series, secure, some flexed feet – beat to split jump 3/4, same, secure, feet flexed – aerial, leg-up check, breaks connection into split jump, will hurt SV – small hesitation on full turn – gainer full, hop to the side. 9.475.

Smith – FX – UW – music delay – double tuck, overdoes it with a bounce back – rudi to double stag, hit, leg crossing there – wolf jump full to tuck jump 1.5, pulls around – 1.5 to layout, has to tuck around the layout to some extent. 9.750

Hargrove – BB – AZ – hit loso series – cat leap to side aerial, fall – switch to switch and another large break – good stick on 1.5 dismount, but a problem set. 8.975

McNamara – FX – UW – switch ring 1/2, not bad – rudi to straddle jump, under control, some leg crossing – switch ring to switch 1/2 – 1.5 to layout, under control, a bit soft in layout – 9.800

Deets – BB – AZ – bhs loso series, solid landing, good extension – smooth full turn – hitch kick to switch side, comfortable – cat leap to kickover, super deep and falls. This is quickly turning into a YIKES rotation for Arizona. 9.175

Wickman – FX – UW – punch front 2/1, again its under, not enough to lose credit for the skill but a definite deduction – solid straddle positions – 1.5 to layout, pretty low pass, some tucking in layout – only does a punch tuck 1/2 as her final pass. That’s usually a rudi, which will destroy the score by not doing it.

Barile – BB – AZ – aerial to loso combo, leg up break but keeps it on – overturns her y spin, extra 1/2 turn and a lean correction – cat leap to switch 1/2, good position but another huge break, bend at the hips – side aerial to full, short with a step forward. No fall but will be another low score. 9.550

Long wait to figure out what to do with Wickman’s routine. 9.7 start for her and a 9.30 from one judge.

Thompson – FX – UW – double tuck, high, slide back – front lay and sheee also has trouble, only does a front tuck full out of the front lay and falls on it – it started well for Washington today but the score will be lose on floor – hits a rudi, short with a step forward. Will be another low SV plus the fall. 9.000

Castles – BB – AZ – bhs loso series, pretty work – switch to split leap, great positions – aerial, keeps arms moving to sissone – wolf double was a little tentative and wonky in the first turn but pulled it together – 1.5, nearly sells a stick. So that was a lot better. 9.825

Cunningham – FX – UW – front tuck through to double tuck, chest up, good control – switch 1/2 was a little short but the wolves out of it were solid – double pike, bounce back, looks like she just stayed in. 9.850

Linton – BB – AZ – attempts a double wolf turn and falls, free leg can’t get out the beam on the second turn. Yeouch. bhs bhs loso, hit with a leg-up check – switch to split is solid – side aerial to full, small slide back. 9.225

Looks like Washington still doesn’t have six people on floor so will have to deal with both those low scores for a 47.700. Arizona, meanwhile, will have to deal with a three-fall rotation (and two other score apocalypses) for a 47.250. SO IT WASN’T AWESOME.

After 3: Washington 145.600, Arizona 144.925

Washington’s season high is still just a 194.050, though, so beating that number is still quite doable, though it looks like a 195 is going to be out of the picture at this point. Arizona is already guaranteed a season low here and a score that will not be used for NQS.

Rotation 4

T Brovedani – BB – UW – aerial to bhs, deliberate but kept moving – switch with a hestiation into switch and split , some short back leg positions as well – side aerial, pulls it back – beat to side aerial to tuck full, stuck. Solid finish. 9.675

Horton – FX – AZ – back 1.5 to front full attempt, no chance on the front full, no punch, falls – CSI: This Floor – front full to front pike is hit – switch to switch ring 1/2, shows some head closure on the ring 1/2 – rudi, slide back. 9.025

Eksteen – BB – UW – aerial to bhs bhs, hits it – solid full turn – sissone – beat jump to sheep, some foot and hip position in sheep jump, check – 1.5, shorter, step back. 9.725

Nosek – FX – AZ – double pike, hit, small slide back – front lay to front full, good lay position, solid work – split leap full to popa, feet – double tuck, solid. 9.825

Thompson – BB – UW – hits candle – switch to a split 3/4 that she tried for 15 years to try to keep on the beam but couldn’t in the end, fall – bhs loso is solid – 1.5, deep landing, step back. 8.900

Orman – FX – AZ – layout to rudi, good control – switch sdie to popa, good height, somewhat crooked in position – double pike, chest forward, a bit of a stagger back on landing. Is the final sound of her floor music a duck being stepped on? 9.850

Thomas – BB – UW – kickover with kinddd of a pause into bhs – beat – switch to straddle 1/4, a bit short on straddle – 1.5 dismount and two swims to hold onto the stick. 9.700

Deets – FX – AZ – sticks double tuck landing – split leap full and popa and split jump full, somewhat steppy on landing – double pike, chest down but hit – front lay to front full, slide forward. 9.825

McNamara – BB – UW – full turn – bhs loso series, solid landing, some feet – cat leap to switch 1/2, slightly off line but keeps arms moving into split – side aerial, large break, bend at the hips – side aerial to tuck full, step back. 9.550

Castles – FX – AZ – 2.5 to front tuck is solidly done – 1.5 through to 2/1, keeps front foot down well – switch ring to switch 1/2, pretty solid – good work. 9.725 seems low for a 10.0 SV for that one. UTL for not having two D elements in the routine?

SKW – BB – UW – bhs loso series, hit – kickover, high landing, into beat jump, hops it forward a little – switch to sissone – side aerial to 1.5, hop forward. Best of the rotation. 9.825

Hargrove – FX – AZ – full in with a bounce back, looked to me like she went OOB but who knows anymore – 1/2 to front full, good layout position, very crisp, just a little low – struggles on what I believe was going to be a switch to split full, can’t really do much at all on the split full – high double tuck. 9.825. Surprised she got away with a score like that with that dance combination trip.

The 9.825 beam anchor from Killough-Wilhelm does give Washington a season high (barely) of 194.075, but still not the score they were looking for in order to have a postseason. A win, though.

FINAL: Washington 194.125, Arizona 193.975

Meet back here in an hour for Minnesota.

You’re losing by four, and there are 0.9 seconds left. You lost. Just stop basketballing.

About to get started with MN and Rutgers.

Rotation 1

Grotenhuis – VT – MN – large lunge back on her yfull, some pike. 9.725

Druass – UB – Rutgers – blind to jaeger, good height, catches slightly close – hits pak, just a bit of feet – short cast hs on high – giant full to double tuck, releases a little late, hop back. 9.775

Albertin – VT – MN – a pretty solid yfull – bounce back pretty far and then adjusts back to hop forward, not bad form, small pike. 9.700

Doherty-Herwitz – Ub – Rutgers – shortish first hs – blindwith some legs into a hit jaeger to overshoot – short cast hs on high – giant full, late, into double tuck, hop forward.9.650

Hooten – VT – MN – great height and position on her Y1.5, still a pretty large lunge forward though

Newman – UB – Rutgers – shorter first hs – hits hindorff, just some feet – clear hip to bail, nice vertical position – small foot miss trying to step up to the high bar, has to correct and change direction on the high bar – hits double tuck. 9.725

Ramler – VT – MN – excellllent Y1.5 – great landing, maybe just slight movement. Has some looser knees, but great landing

9.975 for Ramler. On this routine I’m fine with 9.950 because of the looser knees.

Balser – UB – Rutgers – blind to jaeger, some feet feet and ampliotude – short cast hs on high – hits pak – really nice 1/2 turn position on low – just short on her casts – DLO, chest down some, step forward. 9.750

Loper – VT – MN – another strong Y1.5 – small hop to the side, great extension. 9.950

Karolewski – UB – Rutgers – good first hs – clear hip to Ray, tight hip position in that tkatchev – lone overshoot – short cast hs on high – DLO, pretty, nearly sticks, has to hop back. 9.775

Qualres – VT – MN – another hit 1.5, just a little short on hers with a shuffle back, not large

Joyner – UB – Rutgers – good first hs – blind to jaeger, low, catches somewhat close, works through it – bail, a leg break – shorter cast hs on high – FTDT with a bounce back. 9.800. Some lineup order scoring there.

Where was Huang?

Fun lack of live scores. Love it.

That will easily be a season-high bars score for Rutgers. Some handstands, some leg separations, a lot of flexed feet, but a secure performance.

Very strong vaulting from Loper and Ramler today, should be a huge vault score despite a counting 9.7

After 1: Minnesota 49.450, Rutgers 48.825

Rotation 2

Ferguson – VT – Rutgers – leg sleeve, I hope its covering an insane tattoo instead of as injury support – opens with a strong yfull, small slide back, some piking. 9.775

Montgomery – UB – MN – shorter first hs – blind, gets her grip over in the end, to jaeger to overshoot, some piking in overshoot – good cast hs on high – blind to double front, lunge forward. 9.750

Balser – VT – Rutgers – larger bounce back on her yfull and some direction, pikes down at the end with some soft position late. 9.700

Hooten – UB – MN – short first hs – blind to huge piked jaeger to overshoot, great amplitude, also some overshoot piking – strong cast hs on high – blind to double front sticks it. Really strong. 9.850

Lease – VT – Rutgers – also a hit yfull from her, very similar to Balser but off line the other direction, lunge back. 9.700

Willmarth – UB – MN – good first hs – Ray, catches slightly close with some elbows – very nice bail, good vertical and extension – giant full to double tuck, some legs on full, stuck double tuck. Someone told John this was her debut. It is not. 9.900

Newman – VT – Rutgers – one smaller step back on her yfull – some piking and chest forward but should be a step up. 9.800

Loper – UB – MN – good first hs on low – pretty maloney to pak – has to recast on low and is short – gets the 1/2 turn on second attempt – giant full to double tuck, shorter, hop forward. 9.775

Huang – VT – Rutgers – nearllly showed a stick on her yfull, steps back too quickly into her salute. Good one. 9.875

Sales – UB – MN – solid first hs – bail, very clean – good hs – blind to khorkina, solid height – DLO, small slide back. Good. 9.875

Joyner – VT – Rutgers – another near stick on her full, only a small step – very strong work. Rutgers really impressing so far. 9.900

Ramler – UB – MN – poerfect first hs – maloney to pak, great – another pefect cast hs – van leeuwen great – hits cast hs – toe on, pretty solid finish position – FTDT and small slide back. Could have had a 10 going before that.

9.950. It was her 10 bars day if she had stuck.

Vault scores went higggggh today, but also an important vault rotation for Rutgers to get over 49 and show a series of very competitive Yfulls with controlled landings. There are some top 15 teams that look clearly worse on vault than Rutgers looked today.

After 2: Minnesota 98.800, Rutgers 97.875

Minnesota on very strong pace after the non-scary rotations.

Rutgers close to 196 pace after two, season high to this point is a 194.0.

John’s lineup strategy is really speaking to me.

Rotation 3

Montgomery – BB – MN – bhs loso, hits series, mushy knees – beat is nice and high, into straddle 1/2 and tuck, secure – front tuck, can’t save her large break, opening fall – 1.5, short, lunge back. 9.125

Balser – FX – RU – double tuck, just a tad short, hop forward – switch ring to swithc 1/2 to popa, short position on switch 1/2 – 1.5 to layout, a lunge, some knees – rudi, bounce back. 9.725

Sonier – BB – MN – bhs loso series, good extension, small check – beat to split jump 3/4, gets it around, somewhat short of split, anotehr correction – beat to loso, lean – bhs one-arm bhs 1.5, lunge back. A tight one for her with lots of .05s but a hit. 9.800 is pretty high.

Zannella – FX – RU – double tuck was high but landed short, lunge forward – whip 2/1, bounce back – switch ring 1/2 to split jump full, cuts off the ring split some – front lay to front full, knees, step forward, stays in bounds. 9.700

Loper – BB – MN – bhs loso series, nice and clean – kickover, great height into beat jump, pretty work – switch to straddle 1/4, solid 180s, just some feet – 1.5, can’t show the stick with a step-salute. 9.900. One judge went 9.950 with a non-stick.

Wood – FX – RU – rudi to loso, hits it, loso got a bit too horizontal – split leap full and jump full are short of split position – front 2/1, crossover step out of it. 9.825

Nylin – BB – MN – bhs bhs loso, hit, takes it right to the end as usual, tight hip positions in all elements – hitch kick to switch side, crooked it hitting 180 – 1.5, hop forward. 9.850

Newman – FX – RU – double pike, chest down but brings it around – double tuck, larger bounce back – not bad on straddles and splits – 1.5 to front lay, low but pulls it out. 9.725

Korlin-Downs – BB – MN – bhs loso, pretty, very solid – beat to split jump to stag ring, nailed – side aerial to full, small step. Excellent.

9.975 for Korlin Downs. We’re clear that she didn’t stick though, right? OK.

Joyner – FX – Rutgers – double pike, lands slightly forward, step – split leap 1.5, pulls the turn around pretty well, nice split position – 1.5 to layout, really has to whip around that layout. 1.5 to front pike is solid. 9.825

Ramler – BB – MN – bhs loso, strong – aerial with a wobble, can’t connect it into beat jump – beat to split ring jump, strong – cat leap to side aerial to full, slide back. 9.875. I don’t believe she needed the aerial combo to get to a 10.0 start because Ramler, but that’s still pretty high for the wobble and the non-stick.

We’ve had two: “Everything is set up for Ramler to get a 10” moments already.

Huang – FX – RU – front 2/1, solid, controlled step – rudi to a back tuck stepout, which was weird – very strong final rudi. 9.800

Minnesota a 49.400 on beam, Rutgers a 48.900 on floor. Both teams staying exactly on the track they want. Scoring hasn’t been subtle today, but they’re doing well.

After 3: Minnesota 148.200, Rutgers 146.775

So Minnesota is in contention for a program record, needing 49.525 on floor to do it. They need just a 49.225 to set a top-5 all-time Minnesota score. Rutgers can also set a top-5 program score by going 49.075 on beam.

Rotation 4

Ferguson – BB – Rutgers – bhs loso series, secure landing – switch to switch 1/2, bend at the hips – one-arm bhs to 1.5, step. A hit. 9.700

Koch – FX – MN – front 2/1 to front tuck, just a little lunge – split full to wolf full, solid height – rudi, a little ragged but controlled. 9.850

Newman – BB – Rutgers – kickover, secure, a little pause before beat jump – two-foot bhs to loso series which looked terrifying, she hit it, large lean correction – split jump to split jump 3/4, short of position – gaienr full with a hop back salute. 9.675

Nylin – FX – MN – double pike, a bit back – whip to 1.5 front tuck, hit – switch side to popa a little inexact in landing positions – double tuck is well short, hands down. 9.050

Doherty-Herwitz – BB – RU – aerial to side aerial combination, keeps it going pretty well for this type of series – beat to split jump 3/4, short of split, solid – nice lift on split jump – gainer full, hop back. 9.825

Leneave – FX – MN – double pike, very clean, control on landing – switch 1/2 to wolf full to bounce choreography to knee – 1.5 to layout, does well to keep her layout straight, a little steppy on landing – double tuck, control, chest forward. 9.825

Zannella – BB – Rutgers – bhs loso, small lean correction – split ring jump to split jump, some softer knees there compared to Ramler – beat to side aerial to full, hop back. Good.

Ramler – FX – MN – split ring jump full, great position – double pike, smallll slide back – switch ring, perfection – switch 1/2 looks good – 1.5 through to 2/1, under control. 1.5 to layout, good, whips it over a little. Strong work. 9.900

39.700 AA final for Ramler.

Joyner – BB – Rutgers – bhs loso, strong landing – switch to switch 1/2, actual solid switch 1/2 position – side aerial to full, stuck. 9.925

Hooten – FX – MN – music delay o’clock – full in, very strong, chest up, under control – switch side to popa, high, overturns switch side – just a bit steppy on front pike landing but another high pass – double tuck, strong landing. 9.925

Huang – BB – Rutgers – side aerial through to aerial, pretty smoothly done – full turn, good – split 3/4 with a small lean adjustment – 2/1, stuck. great day for Rutgers. 9.875

Loper – FX – MN – front lay to rudi, high and clean and controlled – switch ring to split leap full – 2.5, controls her step again – 1.5 to front lay, pulls it around, a little short with a step to the side.

Rutgers 195.925, nearly two points better than the previous season high.

I don’t know who did the research here but Minnesota’s program record is a 197.700 from 2004 against Arizona State.

9.925 from Loper gives Minnesota a 197.625, which ties for Minnesota’s second-best score of all-time. Minnesota also went 197.625 last season.

195.925 is the #4 highest-ever score for Rutgers.

Short break again before Iowa/Nebraska.

I’m pretty interested in the judging for Nebraska/Iowa, especially coming off the Sugar Plum Fairy Wand that we just watched, because each event at Nebraska today is pairing a southeast judge with a Pacific northwest judge.

I do like the promptness here because we’re already in intros, and the meet is still 8 minutes from its scheduled start time. That is correct timing.

The PA announcer is putting on fake regional accents to introduce each athlete’s city, and it’s something.

Nebraska really needs to start doing better than the low 195s with this meet, because we’re seeing so many teams (like Rutgers above) putting up scores that are going to make low 195s look a little pitiful when it comes to regional selection.

Rotation 1

Higgins – VT – Nebraska – yfull – medium sized bounce back and some piking. 9.800

Henderson – UB – Iowa – good first hs – oooof toe on and can’t get up to handstand and has to hop off – restarts the troutine – toe oon to maloney to bail, short of vertical on bail – good cast hs on high – strong FTDT, small hop. 9.300

Piringer – VT – Nebraska – long wait as judges figure out what things are – pretty solid control on her yfull – bounces up and sort of leans forward to try to contain the bounce – good amplitude. 9.775

Greenwald – UB – Iowa – good first hs – Ray, some tight hip angle but works through it – pak, hit – 1/2 turn on low, pretty solid – DLO, lands short, hop forward. 9.650

Press – VT – Nebraska – can’t live up to the y1/2 from last week, doesn’t get her front layout around and falls. The way she does it is MUCH harder than your typical y1/2. 9.275

Steffensmeier – UB – Iowa – good first hs – blind to piked jaeger, good dynamics – arch in handstand on high – hit pak – 1/2 turn on low bar a bit late – short cast hs on high – giant full into double tuck, hop back. 9.725

Comin – VT – Nebraska – struggles to control her yfull with a large bounce back, but a hit vault. 9.700

The stream is having some troubbbllles.

Rogers – UB – Iowa – toe on to maloney to pak, small leg break on pak – shortish final cast – giant full to double tuck, takes it way out, lean forward pretty far to try to hold the stick. 9.750

The stream’s new “underwater” aesthetic is really working for me.

Dujakovich – VT – nebraska – they have her upgrading to the Y1.5 today – didn’t we hear on Monday that she wasn’t going to do it? – great stick on it, just like in wamrup – lands staggered and some bent knees in the air. 9.950

So, vault judging not tight so far. Bars judging kind of tight.

Kaji – Ub – Iowa – blind to jaeger, hit, nearly got caught in the blind but worked through it – solid pak – shortish cast hs on high – DLO, slide back. 9.825

Curtis – VT – Nebraska – hits a yfull, slide back, a little off line, good distance, some piking throughout. 9.725

Kenlin – UB – Iowa – good first hs – toe on to maloney to pak, eeesh catches too close on her pak and can’t get her hands over to change direction, comes off, which means Iowa will be counting a bars final – finishes double tuck with a hop. 9.225

So Nebraska 48.950 on vault for a weird rotation because it was kind of bad and then Dujakovich was fantastic. Season high there by a quarter tenth.

Carina Tolan hit a good bars exhibition for Iowa.

Iowa goes 48.250 on bars with the counting fall and only one score into the 9.8s. It was a missed rotation and a tightly evaluated one. So basically because Iowa has been so consistent this season until now, we know this one isn’t going to count.

Rotation 2

Tolan – VT – Iowa – comes a little high on the table but fine – medium bounce back, good direction full, 9.750

Piringer – UB – Nebraska – hits first hs – toe on to maloney to bail, pretty short of vertical on that attempt – short cast hs on high – giant full with some legs apart into double tuck, step back. 9.700

Greenwald – VT – Iowa – smaller bounce back on her yfull, solid work, good layout position. 9.800

Lorange – UB – Nebraska – maloney to pak, smoothly done, nice – arch in 1/2 turn on low but holds the vertical pretty well – giant full to double tuck, stuck. Better. 9.825

Kenlin – VT – Iowa – a larger bounce back on her yfull and a little bend to minimize it, but better amplitude – good shape. 9.750

Thaler – Ub – Nebraska – toe on to maloney to pak, good toe point – rather late 1/1 turn on low – giant full, late into double tuck, lunge back. Some pirouette finishes will get her there. 9.775

Guerin – VT – Iowa – very strong amplitude on her yfull, small hop back, pretty solid open position, some feet, best so far. 9.875

Colombo – UB – Nebraska – short first hs – higgins to piked jaeger, good – missing her casts though – pretty pak, some better 1/2 turn position on low – a strange cast on high, hip angle pause getting up there – higgins to front giant 1/2 to double tuck, small shuffle back. 9.825

Killian – VT – Iowa – nice Yfull – small hop in place a bit more piking than Guerin. 9.850

Davis – UB – Nebraska – good first hs – maloney to clear hip to hindorff, very strong – short cast hs – a little short in her bail position as well – adding more deductions now after a very clean start – DLO, lunge forward. 9.825

Henderson – VT – Iowa – excellent yfull in the air, great height, minor hop back. 9.850

Roby – Ub – Nebraska – hecht mount – good cast hs – blind to jaeger, solid, just some feet – pak, smoothly done – 1/2 turn on low is later – DLO, took it a little too close to the bar but works it out, holds landing with a lean. 9.850

Anyone else feel like the Nebraska bars rotation was evaluated quite a bit looser than the Iowa bars rotation? Though much improved on bars for Nebraska than the previous times I’ve seen them this season.

Nebraska 49.100 on bars, Iowa 49.125 on vault.

After 2: Nebraska 98.050, Iowa 97.375

Rotation 3

Lorange – BB – Nebraska – bhs loso series, hit – switch to split, solid split positions – hitch kick to side aerial, under control – split jump 1/2 from side, short of split and an arm wave – 1.5, small hop. 9.850

Killian – FX – Iowa – 3/1, gets it around, medium leg crossing, under control – oops, front full to I think a front layout attempt, short and had to tuck it and falls. That’s been a theme today. Finishes double tuck, solid

Curtis – BB – Nebraska – wolf hop to front tuck continues to be a problem, fall. Might be time to scrap it? It’s one of those things where the “oh look what she’s doing” of it all might get in the way of the fact that even when she hits it there are deductions for wolf position and deep landing. Bhs loso, hit, small correction – switch to split, nice – nice dismount landing. 9.050

Lots to deal with in the Killian score because she will have lost CV by tucking the element on her middle pass. 9.000 for her.

Castle – FX – Iowa – double pike, hit, a little short, step forward – a short straddle position in dance combo – rudi, under control, just some leg crossing – 1.5 to layout, hit. 9.725

Colombo – BB – Nebraska – scores have already given her a 9.050 for this routine but that’s an error, a repeated score from the previous gymnast – switch to split, good 180s – bhs loso series, hit, soft back leg there – side aerial, squeeze-leans to keep it going into split jump and mostly did, back leg on split – overturns a full turn some – 2/1 dismount, hop back.9.550

Greenwald – FX – Iowa – full in, solid, chest just a bit down – switch side to popa looks fine – 2.5 to front tuck, hit, some leg crossing. 9.825

Uh oh did someone break the beam scoring?

Higgins – BB – Nebraska – hits candle mount – beat to sheep jump, solid sheep position, just tiny adjustment afterward – bhs bhs loso, secure, slightly loose knees – gainer pike, a little short with a step-salute. 9.850

Kaji – FX – Iowa – 1.5 through to double tuck, very strong, secure landing, chest up – double pike, a bit of a slide back, flexed feet – switch 1/2 to split jump full – nice. 9.925

Thaler – BB – Nebraska – aerial through to bhs bhs is secure – switch to beat jump, small hesitation in between but basically nothing – kickover is very deep, large leg-up break but keeps it on the beam – 1.5 a bit short, step back. 9.675

Guerin – FX – Iowa – full in, excellent and capable landing – switch side to popa to straddle jump, high, overturns that switch side so that the popa doesn’ t have to be an all the way full turn – front tuck through to double tuck, maybe just kept that front foot down. Strong. 9.900

Roby – BB – Nebraska – aerial, small check – bhs loso series, confident hit – split jump to stag ring, another small adjustment but covers – side aerial to full, stuck. Good. 9.825. Huh. I would have had that as the best score in the rotation.

Henderson – FX – Iowa – another huge full in, but less control on hers with a slide back – switch side to popa to straddle – front tuck through to double tuck, nailed – 9.925

48.750 on beam for Nebraska, which is not great but keeps them in it for a 196 if floor goes well.

Iowa 49.300 on floor, which is a good score of course, though not what Iowa has been scoring, in a meet that is already a drop score anyway.

After 3: Nebraska 146.800, Iowa 146.675

Rotation 4

Henderson – BB – Iowa – bhs loso series, solid landing – cat leap to switch side, crooked position – double tuck dismount, lands somewhat short, hop forward. 9.800

Curtis – FX – Nebraska – double pike, bounce back – front full to layout is solidly done – switch ring to switch 1/2 – double tuck, keeps front foot down well. 9.850

Looks like Nebraska has pulled Press and is going with five on floor? At least per the graphic.

Castle – BB – Iowa – bhs loso, lean, some soft knees – front tuck, deep, works out of it into beat jump – cat hop to switch side, hit – 1.5, holds the stick. 9.750

Dujakovich – FX – Nebraska – double pike, way over cooks it and a huge fly back OOB and falls – GIF note to self – so let’s hope Nebraska can come up with a sixth member of this lineup? Because otherwise Plan 196 is off – rudi, stagger shuffle but hit – 1.5 to front full final pass is nice. 9.100

Nick – BB – Iowa – bhs loso series, leg-up check – cat leap to aerial to beat, smoothly done – swich, small hesitation before split jump – 1.5, tries to sell a hop-slide-salute. 9.800

Higgins – FX – Nebraska – front 2/1, a little steppy but keeps it in the corner – switch side to popa – rudi, small slide back, but fine – 1.5 to layout, hit well. 9.875

Killian – BB – Iowa – bhs loso series, a leg-up check and a little lean – front tuck, solid – switch to swtich attempt but very short on second switch, back leg didn’t get up much at all, a little check hesitation befroe it – 2/1, small slide. 9.700

Piringer – FX – Nebraska – double tuck, large bounce back, keeps it in bounds – back 1.5 to layout, lunge forward – switch side to popa, looks solid – double pike, small step – 9.875 pretty high.

Kaji – BB – Iowa – bhs loso, small body wave correction – cat leap to side aerial, well extended, secure – split jump to split jump 3/4, solid landing, good 180s – gainer full, stuck. Nice one. 9.875 with a 9.800/9.950 split. I’m more on team 9.950 there, honestly

Lorange – FX – Nebraska – yeah, looks like just 5 and the Dujakovich score will count – double pike, hit – front lay to front full and takes it OOB, may have landed the whole thing OOB – 1.5 to layout, a little soft. 9.650.

Kenlin – BB – Iowa – bhs loso series, nicely hit, good extension – swtich to split, good 180s – aerial to beat, smoothly done – bhs bhs 1.5, holds the stick. Confident work.

Nebraska finishes on 195.100, which is exactly the kind of low 195 town they were trying to get out of. Four meets left to do it.

Both judges go 9.950 for Kenlin so Iowa finishes on 195.850. Would have been a useful score with a bars hit, but alas it will be dropped instead.

  1. Thanks to TBBS for the live blog!

Arizona is going with the no commentary stream. Which do you prefer: Stream with commentary, or Stream with no commentary?

It has been funny this season to see the Az cardboard fan cutouts located immediately next to the uneven bars. They are leaning forward so much, that it seems distracting! lol

    1. Spoke too soon. In the second rotation, Az has started the audio commentary (or perhaps turned on the microphone?). I prefer streams with commentary, since you can always mute the audio if you really want to.

    1. >how many teams go to regionals?

ncaa.com says 36 teams with a selection show currently scheduled for the last weekend of March 2021.

    2. Normally 36 teams but I have heard a rumor that this year the number will be lower. Like a lot lower.

      1. Right. Normally it is the top 36 teams with teams 29-36 in a play in dual meet. The winners of the play in go to preliminaries where there are two sessions of 4 teams each. The top two from each session move on to the finals where the 4 teams compete with first and second making it to the top 8 at Nationals.

This year has not been finalized yet. But I am hearing that they might only take top 24 teams, have one regional final of 6 teams (with byes) top 2 from each regional make it to Nationals.

This is how it used to be done previously. There were 6 teams at each regional, one regional meet, top 2 made it to Nationals. However, there were 6 regional sites, not 4. So top 36 teams made it. With having only 4 regional sites, you would need to eliminate 12 teams.

In a pandemic year this makes sense.
No unranked seeds out of the top 18 teams have ever made it out of regionals since the 18 seeds started in 2003. I don’t think any of the 4th, 5th, or 6th ranked teams in each regional ever made it out ever ,IIRC. The closest an unranked team made it to Nationals was in 2003 when Central Michigan tied Auburn for 2nd at the Central regional but lost due to the tie break.

So lobbing off 1/4 of the teams that normally compete at regionals makes sense to decrease the number of athletes in one location and competing during Covid.

      2. Uh, they’re halfway through the season and they’re open to changing the postseason format but like, only rumored? IS THIS EVEN A FUCKING NCAA DIVISION 1 SPORT??????

      3. Every sport this year is flying by the seat of their pants. There are sports that are six weeks away from having their world championships that don’t know if those championships are going to happen this year or not. Shit has to be different in a pandemic year. We all have to be flexible and adjust.

      4. “In a pandemic year this makes sense.

This is exactly right — the lower ranked teams never advance so they and their ambitions should fuck right off, amirite? Would be a real shame if Florida caught the ‘rona from Towson at regionals and they had to miss nationals. Towson better stay home.

The time to worry about COVID was when they were deciding whether to have a season. How many quad meets happened this weekend? Are the conferences with 8, 10 members still planning to hold the conference championship or will Mizzou be told to stay home to prevent SECs from becoming a superspreader event? Exactly. It’s disingenuous as hell to render the bubble teams’ season pointless because some administrator woke up in the middle of the season and was like “oh yeah, pandemic!”

      5. Well, I think some conference championships either will not happen or will happen in a modified format. SECs will go forward of course. But I’ll be surprised if all the rest do.

Now why this kind of stuff is still being worked out now and wasn’t worked out earlier…don’t ask me.

      6. If Covid protocols need to take place and reduced number of teams need to compete to do so then yeah Towson has to stay home. This wouldn’t be the first year teams have to stay home. #37 always just misses out.

It isn’t just about limiting the teams, it is also about reducing the rounds of competition. Just like they reduced the number of meets being held this year. SEC is only competing against SEC.
Instead of a play-in meet, two semi-finals, and a regional final. It would be reduced to one final.

It is mid-point in the season and there are still teams that haven’t even competed yet.

Not sure I understand your analogy of conference championships. Normally there are two sessions in the bigger conferences anyway. But there isn’t a conference final after.

        Think before you post.

      7. If COVID is bad enough in March/April that the NCAA believes that holding regionals with the requisite number of teams would be too big a risk, the answer is to cancel the postseason, not to tell 12 teams that earned their spots “GOTCHA!”

Conference championships is a totally appropriate analogy. Those teams are still traveling, doing podium training, sharing practice space, and staying in the same handful of hotels. Either COVID is present or it isn’t. It is every bit as risky as regionals.

Look, I think holding this season was stupid. But teams made the choice to compete the season or not based on the rules that NCAA laid out for them. Canceling the postseason is one thing, changing the rules midstream is another. If NCAA came out next week and said “never mind, we’re holding the basketball tournament with 32 teams this year,” programs would be screaming bloody murder, and rightly so. How many more gymnastics programs would have sat this season out if they knew they had to make top 24, not 36, to have a postseason? For many programs, making regionals IS the goal. Their ambitions are just as valid as those of the teams that hope to win a national championship.

        Think before you post.

    3. There are still a few meets yet and NQS has not kicked in yet. That said Washington needs some big meets coming up, they had a disaster start to the season so they need to eliminate some really low scores because at the moment they are ranked 44 and are 8 slots from the cut off #36. That is if they keep top 36 which is likely going to be cut to top 24, so if it is 24 they are currently 20 spots off.

  2. Washington just needs to average 48.1 on their last 2 events to get a new high for the year. It could happen. Or they could fuck it up.

  3. I love Geneva Thompson’s facial expressions while waiting for her floor performance!

  4. Yikes, what a rotation for Arizona… Love watching Castles though, pretty gymnastics and her ability to hit… an absolute find for Arizona!

    1. I agree! She’s fantastic – one of those rare gymnasts who can make sure that even when she’s a bit wonky she corrects herself in the air before she takes a balance check. You rarely see it in NCAA. She’s such a star!

      1. I absolutely love her floor! The 9.725 was surprising; I hope it’s not an UTL issue & she has to ditch some of the interesting choreo in favor of something more standard-issue.

  5. So the University of Maryland just announced a shelter-in-place for students living on campus…wonder if that extends to athletes.

  6. Does anyone know what Newman was supposed to do who can explain it to me? Everyone is saying the direction issue, but if she was doing a jump to high, there’s no direction change, and then she did a kip half just to do a giant half back to the same direction? I’m confused what the intended composition was supposed to be.

  7. Love being able to watch a team like Rutgers on ESPN. Glad they are finally showing some other teams this year!

  8. Current AA NQS:

    Thomas 39.681
    Webb 39.606
    Ramler 39.600
    Bryant 39.556
    Hambrick 39.525
    Brown 39.506
    Worley 39.500
    O’Keefe 39.494
    Loper 39.406

Ramler can pass Webb for the #2 spot if she scores a 9.8 or higher on floor

  9. BTN+ meets are the worst!! I really want to watch more Big Ten teams but it’s impossible getting access as an international viewer.

Minnesota vs Rutgers was a lot of fun though, Ramler is just divine!

  10. I agree with Spencer, bars scoring for Iowa seemed a bit harsher than for Nebraska.

  11. i cannot for the life of me figure out what UTL means? I’m sure ill think of it later and duh :/

  12. i feel for washington. idk about the coaching staff, but the pandemic has clearly affected the team and i hope that they can pull it together for a good meet. losing skylar killough-wilhem definitely didn’t help either :/
