  1. Some commentators have done a good job recently of not talking during floor routines (I’m looking at you, Alisa Mowe) while others never seem to shut up (looking at you Kelly Garrison). It is so refreshing when commentators don’t fill every second of silence with talking.

Let’s normalize NOT talking during routines, especially floor, and letting us enjoy routines as they happen and getting commentary between routines!

    1. I’d say commentary during other events is totally fine, but during floor it is a crime, we want to hear the music! And I agree, Alisa Mowe is amazing, I don’t know why I never heard of her before. She actually talks about the routine not some random stories she just heard about gymnastics. She even talks about how many tenths will a gymnast lose if she misses that connection which I was never able to understand!

      1. Yes! I don’t think it’s too much to ask for commentators to at least know some basics of scoring and calculating D. Watching the Winter Cup reminded of how funny it is that when someone misses a connection and Nastia/Tim go “she will lose……..some tenths” and stumble over themselves. I feel like a combo like pak+VL is a common enough of a connection at this point for them to know the gymnast will lose .2 if they miss it.

      2. However what we have learned with judging is that it is subjective and the judges don’t often take the deductions they should. How many times have we heard “step out of bounds, one tenth off” and then the judges don’t do it. How many times has there been a delay due to judging discrepancies.
Saying “she will lose…some tenths” makes sense since they aren’t the judges and are not making those decisions.

ESPECIALLY in the NCAA where the judging is out of whack and needs revision. Gymnasts are receiving split scores that are insane. 9.850/10 split is ridiculous.

      3. I definitely agree with you about that, but I was talking more about connection value than deductions. Obviously deductions are subjective and we can’t know for certain how much a judge will take.

  2. Is Stanford actually competing this year? They scored a 133 last week and competed only 3 on bars, beam, and floor. Will they even be able to field a full team this weekend or moving forward? It seems odd to even have a season at this point.

    1. Yup still going. They were unfortunate enough to be in CA where they had to deal with multiple restrictions due to Covid. They aren’t the only ones. Some athletes lost months of training time.
Why do you care? If the athletes want to compete, let them compete.

      1. Yikes. Clearly I’m asking because I care about the Stanford program. I care as a longtime NCAA fan. Stanford was one of my favorites to watch, especially during the Liz Tricase and Carly Janiga years.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask if Stanford is planning to actually compete. They have 4/5 meets left on their schedule, including PACs. They haven’t shown the ability to field a full team, so there are obvious questions as to whether they will in the coming weeks. Stanford has been awful at fan support and providing news or updates. Unfortunately, none of the college gym sites have provided info either.

I live in California and am well aware of the restrictions. I’m also aware of the several opt outs of athletes and an odd first meet. I want more for Kyla Bryant and hope she’ll at least get the chance to compete in the post season.

    2. Stanford is located in the world’s epicenter of shelter in place rules. People have lost 6-9 months of training or have had severely reduced time in the gym. It is so bad, that local elite gymnasts (including members of the national team) have had to relocate to open states in order to pursue their gymnastics dreams.

If the Stanford team can compete safely – I support that, even if that means just three on an apparatus. What they have had to endure training/schooling wise, they deserve the chance to get out there and perform. Besides, I want to see Kyla Bryant one last time!

You can tell which teams are from open states – SEC, Utah, Arizona State are way ahead of UCLA, Cal, Oregon State.

      1. Kyla Bryant can compete next year. All gymnasts were given a “free year” as this year does not count toward 4 year eligibility, years to compete eligibility, or scholarship. Scholarship caps are waived for next year.

Unless she is ready to graduate and move on from gymnastics, she can take a 5th year with no issues.

I imagine some gymnasts will take up the offer as they would still need credits to graduate. I also anticipate some athletes will retire because they will be graduating and it won’t be worth it to take classes for an additional year just to do one more season of NCAA gymnastics.

      2. All PAC12 schools had the same restrictions. The only difference is, certain counties in California had additional restrictions, Santa Clara being the tightest – which is where Stanford is located.

I say mad props to Cal and UCLA – as well as Utah and ASU – as they had a lot less time to prepare than other conferences. People make a big deal about Cal and UCLA but there were restrictions across the conference.

      3. How does the extra year impact scholarship limits? Teams like Florida and UCLA could have an issue if scholarship limits are kept the same even though athletes can take an extra year.

      4. I think it would be tough for Bryant to make the post-season because she would have to make it as an event specialist. And that’s assuming she can even get enough scores to have an NQS to qualify for regionals as an event specialist. And that’s assuming we are even having event specialists at regionals and nationals this year the same as a normal year.

I hope she can have a fifth year.

      5. In her post, Sally specifically stated that scholarship caps are waived for 2021-2022. It had to be to accommodate the senior athletes, because it would impact teams with in coming freshman on scholarship.

No limit to scholarship athletes 2021-2022

      6. Did the NCAA change the scholarship issue? Originally, seniors could return and not count against scholarship limits. Underclassmen could still get the extra year, but would count against scholarship numbers.

Also, it has been a topic in other sports but I haven’t heard it in gym yet, but can schools not allow the athlete to return on scholarship? I remember when spring sports last year were allowed to return this year, some schools said they likely wouldn’t be able to honor all requests to return due to financial issues.

      7. Pretty sure they can always not renew a scholarship, for whatever reason. Certainly under these conditions they’d have authority to do so because there are plenty of schools whose budget won’t allow for a bunch of extra one-year scholarships and they can’t be forced to find money that isn’t there.

      8. “World’s epicenter” is a little extreme. A lot of countries were much stricter than Northern California. People had to have a written form to go to the grocery store in some places. Let’s not get carried away and act like Stanford, and Stanford alone, had issues with shelter in place procedures.

      9. Although restrictions definitely limited many CA teams I would actually say that Cal and UCLA have been performing about as expected. Cal has been doing really well, even if Perea and Li didn’t become the automatic stars of the team that some were hoping for and UCLA was never going to have the best season with the loss of a mega decorated senior class and the almost universal deferral of the freshman elites. All of their lineups have at least 2 athletes that wouldn’t see regular competition time in a normal season and they’ve done as well as they were going to do without the depth they’re used to having.

  3. Cal already has the best 2 road score combo for teams from #4 (Utah) down through the rest of the top 10. They’re trying to replace a weak 196.075 4th score. With a well hit meet at home this weekend, Cal could jump all the way to #5 and even #4 if Utah doesn’t get a replacement road score.

  4. wondering why there are zero meets being televised on p12 network this weekend, especially with it being close to post season 😒

    1. The Pac-12 Network is running thin having let many employees go. Also, the Pac-12 Network is covering the 2021 Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament which is taking place March 3 through March 7.

      1. The PAC12 has been a disaster when it comes to leadership and the network. Hopefully, the “resignation” of Larry Scott will bring about much needed change.

    2. Looks like the women’s basketball tournament is this weekend, so that pre-empts regular season gymnastics. I’d imagine that’s why the SEC meets are on SEC+ as well. It also means next week’s meets will probably be streaming only because of the men’s tournament.

      1. This is the last weekend of the regular season for SEC. All teams have a bye next week.

      2. In a normal season, SEC gymnastics teams usually have non-conference meets the weekend of the women’s basketball tournament and they wouldn’t be on TV anyway for that reason. The annual ritual of peasant programs traveling south to enjoy some crack. Since SEC is conference-only this year, the lack of televised meets this weekend seems weirder than it is.

    3. Most of the pac 12 schools are showing their meets for free at least. So at least we can still see them.

    4. It’s also basketball postseason. Women’s tourney this weekend, men’s tourney next weekend, and then March madness. I’m glad ESPN doesn’t have the rights to March Madness because, if they did, gym might not get nearly as much coverage in the postseason.

I think volleyball also starts their postseason relatively soon. They are typically a fall sport with their tourney in December, but pushed it back due to covid. It’s a busy spring in NCAA!

  5. For all of the people who are interested in the potential scholarship issues, here is a decent article.

    https://www.ncsasports.org/coronavirus-sports/ncaa-eligibility-coronavirus

Unfortunately no one really knows yet which schools will allow seniors to come back on scholarship or if any underclassmen will be able to take advantage of the policy. I did find it interesting that not even half of the spring sport athletes from last year considered returning. I couldn’t find numbers on the actual amount of athletes who are competing again. When the policy was announced last spring for spring sports, Wisconsin’s AD said the school wouldn’t support the scholarships, but athletes could return as walk-ons. Ohio State’s AD commented that they would try to allow anyone who wants to return to return (granted Ohio St is one of the wealthiest (and one of the largest) athletic programs in the country).

I would think there are probably quite a few seniors who are ready to move on to the next stage of their life.

  6. I’m glad most of the weekends big meets are happening at 8/8:30 Eastern tonight.
