The last Friday of the regular season! Next time we do this on a Friday, it will be the regional semifinals. It’s not a usual Friday because of the absence of SEC meets, but I’ll be starting out with Michigan’s visit to Maryland, finishing with the ASU/BSU and Utah meets, and then sampling the buffet in between as the mood strikes.

Maryland currently sits in 28th place—the final spot that would avoid play-in meets—but also still has a 195.3 to get rid of today so could make this situation a lot nicer with some home finale 196.0.

Michigan will be eyeing the high goal of 197.775, the score required to move ahead of LSU in Monday’s rankings.

“Each player.”

Rotation 1

McClure – VT – Maryland – very clean position on her yfull, legs together, slide back. 9.900 for a non-stuck full. So get ready.

Heiskell – UB – Michigan – good first hs – blind to jaeger, good toe point – small arch in hs on high bar – high pak, good legs together – hitting her casts to vertical – giant full to double tuck. Her usual except for the arch after the jaeger. 9.875

Gilbert – VT – maryland – yhalf, a bit more control on that one today, medium pace forward, some pike and knees. 9.800

Morrison – UB – Michigan – good piked gienger, legs together – gets to handstand well on her bail – smlightly loose back in final cast hs – FTDT with a lean to the side to try to hold the stick. 9.850

Glauber – VT – Maryland – hits a full, not the most distance, some flexed feet, hop to the side. 9.775

Wilson – UB – Michigan – blind to piked jaeger, hit, some foot flexing – another small arch in cast on high – bail, small pike in the air, gets to vertical – good final cast hs – DLO, smooth, step back. 9.800

Burgess – VT – Maryland – good amplitude and distance on her full, medium step back – 9.825

Koulos – UB – Michigan – short first hs – blind to jaeger, good feet – better second bs – clean bail, has the vertical – pretty short final cast hs – DLO, slide back. 9.875

Barber – VT – Maryland – good full, not as much distance as Burgess but solid height – hop back – strong layout position. 9.875

Brooks – UB – Michigan – blind to piked jaeger and falls – I blame that closeup of the bar they cut to so we couldn’t see anything – finishes with a stuck DLO 1/1 of course

“Do you think that fall is going to…hurt her score at all?”

Rubio – VT – Maryland – good dynamic full but a larger bounce back. 9.850

Wojcik – UB – Michigan – toe on to deltchev, again terrible closeups of her hands during these skills – looked a little short on her bail position – great final cast – DLO, high, keeps the stick, just a hair deep in body position.

Morris stuck a Y1/2 in exhibition, holds it with a swim. Some knees and pike.

Bauman in exhibition – “she went to the same high school as former ARTISTIC gymnast Shawn Johnson” – hits her set, double front dismount, small step.

Wojcik’s 9.950 gives Michigan 49.350 to Maryland’s 49.250.

Michigan withstood the Brooks fall and got some fine 9.8s in there, but didn’t quite put the handstands and sticking together the way they can. A solid vault rotation for Maryland, also quite high scores.

Tsiknias with a torn ACL.

Rotation 2

Michigan has put Guggino in the vault anchor spot.

Heiskell – VT – Michigan – adds her Y1.5 and it’s quite good – comes in just the tiniest bit short and has to take a small slide back after a sec as she tries to hold the stick – typical good form. 9.975 is sure something.

LeBlanc – Ub – Maryland – gienger, catches a bit close, leg break – hit bail, some angle – short cast hs on high – giant full into double tuck, holds the stick with a lean. 9.650

Wojcik VT – Michigan – lands short on her Y1.5 with a crossover step back – medium size. 9.900

Weir – UB – Maryland – angle in first hs – gienger out of giant full, straddle on catch – bail…I guess…quite short on some handstands – giant full to double tuck, stuck. 9.750

Wilson – VT – Michigan – a small hop forward on her Y1.5 – good height – her usual. 9.925

Osterhout – UB – Maryland – short first hs – blind to jaeger, good height, connects to overshoot – final cast hs looked better – double front dismount, pace back. 9.750

Morrison – VT – Michigan – stuck y1.5! Very strong landing, just a bit of knees in the air. So, Heiskell got 9.975 and Morrison actually stuck hers, so…9.975

Glauber – UB – Maryland – quite short on first hs – hits tkatchev, close catch – good bail – will get docked for these cast hs – DLO, really nice shape in the air, stuck

Brooks – VT – Michigan – nearrrrly another stick on her Y1.5 – just a little slide together of the heels, which is fine, but the slide took her a little bit back. Third 9.975 of the rotation! COOL!

Barber – UB – Maryland – clear hip to hindorff to overshoot, nice amplitude, just a bit short on final cast hs – DLO, nearly holds the stick, step salute out of it. 9.900

Guggino – VT – Michigan – and she adds a Y1.5 as well – and nearly sticks it – small step forward – not quite the amplitude of the last couple but a very excellent rotation of six Y1.5s, even without Brenner. Awesome.

Guggino gets 9.950. Michigan goes 49.800 on vault, which is weirdly not a program record because of this one time in 1997 when they apparently got 49.825, but it’s huge.

Rubio – UB – Maryland – half turn is late – gienger, catches quite close with a leg break – bail, a little short of vertical – giant full to double tuck, step back

So, Michigan, 49.800 on vault. Very reminiscent of the Cal bars record there, in that it was a phenomenal rotation that also benefited from some massive overscoring for the team before, so there was nowhere else to go but…nearly 10s for everyone. Was probably a real life 49.550-49.600.

After 2: Michigan 99.150, Maryland 98.125

Michigan back over 198 pace. Maryland over 196 pace. It’s going to be a day.

Wojcik out of the floor lineup for Michigan. They’re like, “We just got a 49.800 on vault so rest your pretty little head.”

Rotation 3

Burgess – BB – Maryland – kickover, small pause into bhs but connected enough, some knees on bhs – split jump to straddle 1/4, secure, somewhat short of position on split jump – side somi, hit – gainer front lay full, step forward. 9.750

Koulos – FX – Michigan – switch full, pretty solidly around – 2.5, controls her step forward – double pike, also solid – that cool part of the routine where we freeze on a shot of her starting to run – front lay to front full, very solid tumbling. 9.850

LeBlanc – BB – Maryland – bhs loso and falls – she was well short on her loso and had to tuck it a lot, off line – finishes with a gainer full with a step salute. 9.250

Bauman – FX – Michigan – double pike, chest up, controls the step – switch 1/2 to wolf full to wolf full, positions started well but she lost it on the final wolf, a bit short with a hoppy landing – double tuck, solid work – 1.5 to layout, hit, just a bit soft in legs. 9.825

Weir – BB – Maryland – bhs loso, good height, small adjustment – beat to standing loso, solid, some knees – a bit tight on straddle 1/4 position – cat leap to switch side, again a tighter straddle position – bhs 1.5, crossover step. 9.725

Morrison – FX – Michigan – good height on double pike, slide back – double tuck, more control there – switch 1/2 to wolf full to popa, great height and positions in the air, just a little slidey on landing – front lay to front full with a step. 9.850

Rouse – BB – Maryland – standing loso with a little check before beat jump – bhs loso, hit – split jump to straddle 3/4, check – 1.5 with a bounce forward. 9.650

Brooks – FX – Michigan – full in, very strong landing, solid leg positions as well – front tuck through to double tuck, larger bounce back there – hits solid split positions – double pike, hit well. 9.900

McClure – BB – Maryland – aerial and falls – did not expect that in her routine, taking Maryland off the needed scoring pace now – switch to straddle 1/4, nice – kickover to bhs, hit – gainer rudi dismount, hop back. 9.125

Wilson – FX – Michigan – giant open full in, lands just a tad short – front lay to front full, shows actual height and control – huge straddle elements and more than hits the positions – “HER TEAMMATES ARE MIMICKING HER MOVES LIKE THEY KNOW IT,” credit to Kirsten for being like, dude…. – double tuck, solid. 9.925

Barber – BB – Maryland – aerial, hit, step dances out of it – bhs loso, solid – kickover to beat – switch to split, hit, a little short on split position – 2/1, stuck landing. Good one.

Guggino – FX – Michigan – double pike, pretty large slide back – switch full attempt, rushed through that – front lay to front full, slide forward, some knees – lay to rudi, come control there, just some knees

Barber’s 9.875 brings Maryland to 48.250 on beam.

Guggino’s 9.750 will be dropped, so Michigan with another 49.350 on floor.

After 3: Michigan 148.500, Maryland 146.375

So Maryland’s dreams of a 196 are probably gone, but still very capable of eclipsing that 195.3 score they’re aiming to drop with a good floor.

Michigan still with a shot at another 198 with a big beam result. It will take just 49.275 now to pass LSU in Monday’s rankings.

(This is also the kind of information I wish more of the broadcasts that have researchers and stats people working for them would give us, especially when the result is over before the last rotation, as it is here. Give the people something to watch or root for.)

Rotation 4

Bauman – BB – Michigan – bhs loso series, solid work, good toe point – swithc 1/2 to split jump, also hit securely – piked side somi – side aerial to full, stuck, very nice routine. 9.925

With that score, perhaps Michigan is inching closer to another 198 or program record than they are that score needed to pass LSU.

LeBlanc – FX – Maryland – double pike, takes it way far with a large lunge back and OOB – switch 1/2 to wolf jump 1.5, nice dance elements, clearly completed – front full to front tuck is verrrry low, barely pulls it around in a deep squat. 9.375

Wilson – BB – Michigan – bhs loso series, secure – cat leap to switch side, nice and high, she has become more comfortable with those straddle elements on beam as well – double tuck, stuck landing. Excellent. 9.975 OK NOW.

Rubio – FX – Maryland – double pike, secure, chest just a bit forward – 1.5 to layout is also a struggle for her, very flat and fully runs forward out of it – switch side to popa, short of popa position – double tuck, slide back. 9.650 that will count.

Farley – BB – Michigan – bhs loso loso, hit securely, just some feet – split jump to split jump 1/2, a bit low but again solid – 1.5 turn, great – side aerial, way short and falls – gainer pike, holds the pike with a lean.

McClure – FX – Maryland – double tuck, hit, chest a bit forward – front lay to rudi, nice control – split leap full to popa, good extension – front lay to front full, stuck landing. Nice one. 9.850

Brooks – BB – Michigan – apparently we missed her series, but she hit it, cool – switch to switch, nice positions – kickover, chest up, solid – double pike, and she nearly holds the stick on hers, step salute forward. 9.900

Rouse – FX – Maryland – double pike, large bounce back, OOB – another one who struggles on her 1.5 to layout, very flat layout, just gets it to ger feet – a little bouncy on her dance combination – double tuck, chest a bit down, step. 9.525 also counting.

Wojcik – BB – Michigan – switch to split, pretty – bhs bhs loso, smooth, very secure – 1.5 dismount, bounce forward

Burgess – FX – Maryland – 3/1, pulls it around, short landing, lunge forward – switch 1/2 was a little short but the wolf 1.5 after it was nice and high – front lay front full with a slide forward. 9.750

Wojcik 9.900. New program record in contetion with a hit from Heiskell. Needs just a 9.850

Heiskell – BB – Michigan – cat leap to side aerial, solid – split to switch side, hit, we think, cut to her feet – bhs loso series, comfortable – slightly tentative on full turn – 1.5 dismount, hop forward.

It will certainly earn the score they need to pass LSU. We’ll wait and see about the new record.

Barber – FX – Maryland – full in, solid, chest just a bit forward – 1.5 to front pike, slide forward – switch – popa and popa, step back – double tuck, a bit deep, pulls it out.

9.900 for Heiskell. New program record 198.100 for Michigan, and a new program-record 49.600 on beam .

FINAL: Michigan 198.100, Maryland 195.050

On the flip side, that will not be a counting score for Maryland, which will put them in danger of being dumped into the play-in meets with one competition remaining.

Michigan’s NQS goes to 197.788, which will put them ahead of LSU for next week and should be good enough to clinch #3 in Monday’s rankings. Utah or Cal would need like 198.5 or something.

Elsewhere, Kent State just put up a 196.050 road score, which will move them to 27th in the in-progress rankings and already bump Maryland down into 29th.

GW had to pull out of Towson’s Pride meet at the last minute because of COVIDy things. But Temple is really celebrating Pride with a 49.225 on bars. Looks like a 49.075 on vault for them as well. Temple has hit 196 only once ever before, in 2018.

West Virginia and Pitt are about to start. West Virginia very much on score-watch, sitting in 36th place right now. The teams through #34 are starting to create some distance, so WVU would like to bridge that gap to #34 Ball State to take some of the pressure off, which (for now, Ball State hasn’t gone yet) would require 195.875. Last time WVU went 195.900, so it is possible.

Pitt is sitting well down into the 40s, so would basically need to start getting 196s like right now.

West Virginia is already over 49 on bars with an athlete still to go, while the previous season high on bars was 48.750. So I’m going to say they’re on track for the score they need.

Pitt showed a lineup of four Yfulls and two ytucked fulls for 48.650, which is not really what they were looking for there as they’ve gone 48.8 and 48.9s previously this season.

It’s a 49.075 bars rotation for West Virginia. Beam and floor have typically been their better numbers, so if they can get through vault still over 196 pace, that would be very encouraging.

Pretty sure the Towson/Temple live scores have suffered a minor nervous breakdown.

Iowa State is also about to get started shortly. Iowa State is sort of in that ranking purgatory right now at #23, where a seeded spot in the top 16 looks unlikely unless today is some high 196, but they also look pretty solid for staying in the top 28 and avoiding the play-ins now that the 193 that was ruining their ranking is gone and all their NQS scores are 196s.

Is it just the angle, or are West Virginia’s vaults all realllly close to the table?

Pitt had a long delay to get Kline a SV-induced 9.375 on bars, which will have to count because it’s a lineup of five. The story of their season.

A 48.800 on vault will put WVU just below 196 pace after two events, but still in contention for it.

Pitt gets through the five-person bars with 48.700, one of their best bars scores of the season despite counting that 9.375.

ISU and Northern Illinois has begun – ISU has an opening yfull from Turner and then goes to the 1.5s, starting with Hong, a gigantic bounce forward on hers

Al-Ashari hits bars in the second spot for NIU following a fall in the first position.

Just a yfull from Boychuk today, but a huge one, too huge with an uncontrolled bounce back.

Interested to see if Kofmehl gets bail handstand credit there on bars, could be critical in a necessary score. Looks like she got it, 9.625.

Really nice Y1.5 from Steinmeyer, small rise onto her toes into a step-salute. She goes 9.925.

Maxwell follows Steinmeyer and nearly stick her own Y1.5, she had the landing for a second but was just a little deep, and instead of a step-salute, she sort of did a scream-fist-pump-salute, which I appreciated. Screaming distracts the judges from hops. That’s just science. Also 9.925 for her.

De Jesus finishes vault for Iowa State with a small hop forward on her Y1.5. Another good one, just some knees. She also goes 9.925. I would have had this one a tad lower than the previous two.

Hamp and Sears went through cleanly (pretty DLO from Hamp) on bars to semi-save the rotation score for NIU, but it’s still going to be a mid 48 and one of their lowest of the season. 48.625.

49.300 for Iowa State on vault thanks to three strong Y1.5s.

Looks like Temple is done with 195.925, the second-highest score in Temple history.

Iowa State has a jaeger fall in the second position on bars from Maxwell.

Vella-Wright up 5th on bars to ISU – beautiful maloney to pak but is very short on her cast hs on low – van leeuwen is lovely, hop to the side on FTDT. Shame about that low bar handstand because the releases were a treat as always.

De Jesus goes through successfully in the final spot so ISU avoids counting a bars fall. Caught a little close on her tkatchev, otherwise strong.

48.750 on vault for NIU, 49.225 on bars for Iowa State. Iowa State keeping that dream of a 197 in this meet alive.

Pitt is able to drop a beam grab to go 48.775 on beam and 146.150 total so far. West Virginia goes 49.150 on floor to get back over 196 pace heading to beam.

In exhibition beam, Kylie Robatin just did an improvised scale out of her kickover.

Another score thing to watch – While Iowa State has gone 197 plenty of times in its history, its highest post-KJ score is 196.800, which could go today.

Just saw a double L turn attempt from Macy on floor for Pitt. We very rarely see that one in NCAA because if you’re relying on it for a 10.0 SV and don’t get double turn credit…well you might as well have fallen.

De Jesus falls on beam. Iowa State has three hits before her, but they are all in the 9.7s.

Semple follows De Jesus with a fall on a switch 1/2, so forget what I said about that score stuff.

Also on fall watch, West Virginia has a fall from Asper in the 4th spot on beam, so they’ll need two more hits to get toward that 196 goal.

Uh oh. Horowitz in the 6th spot for Iowa State just sat a kickover front downnnn onnnnto the beam because she was so low on it. Third miss in a row in that rotation.

Uh oh part 2. Abarca just fell for WVU on beam so they’ll be counting a fall there and won’t get the score they want in their quest to get to compete at their home regional.

Horowitz gets away with 9.675 for falling onto the beam (hi…) but it’s still a sub-48 beam score for Iowa State. NIU’s 48.800 on floor puts them just three tenths back.

Dear dear. Uh oh part 3. Handono for WVU was nowhere close on her bhs loso series on beam, third fall in a row.

West Virginia is done with just a 194.675. That will not count.

Pitt will win the meet with a 195.100, which will definitely count for them but won’t do a ton for any last-ditch run to regionals.

Iowa State is now at 146.575, so would need to go 49.500 on floor just for this meet to count. Northern Illinois is looking for a mid 195 here, which is also basically off the table, but this could be a counting score still with a hit beam. Fall in the first spot, though.

Getting set for the final two of the day, Arizona State/Boise State and Utah State/Utah.

Utah would need a 198.300 to move up at all in the rankings, so probably not. This meet will be about getting a score that Cal can’t catch with a good one on Sunday. Utah State is in prime shape in the rankings right now at #20 and couldn’t really ask for more, so basically just take it.

Arizona State still has a 196.650 road score that they’d very much like to get rid of, though there’s enough of a gap between the higher teams and ASU that ASU’s score would need to be 197.275 to move ahead of Arkansas and Denver. Tough but doable. That’s what they’re looking for today. Boise State would love a 197.075, which would put them ahead of #16 Georgia in Monday’s rankings. The top 16 being so important for postseason purposes.

So that’s kind of the deal with these meets.

Rotation 1

Masiado – VT – Boise St – solid control on yfull, small slide back, some pike

Isa – VT – Utah – hits a yfull, only small movement back, not her biggest one, not a lot of distance, but fine

Barbanente hits bars for ASU, small hop back on DLO

Varnadore – Ub – Utah – St – maloney to bail, leg break on maloney, hit – nice cast hs on high – gets caught a little working into her front giant 1/2 but works through it – double tuck, large bound forward

Hall – VT – Utah – falls on her Y1.5 – also got NOTHING on that vault. No height, no chance to pull it around.

Boyer – Ub – ASU – 2nd up, clean maloney to pak, good line – clear 1/2 turn position on low bar, finished right on top – one shortish cast hs – FTDT, small step forward. Pretty. 9.875

Gutierrez – Ub – Utah St – maloney to overshoot, not to handstand if that’s what she was going for – DLO, secure landing

Bruden – VT – Boise St – good amplitude on full, medium slide back

O’Keefe – VT – Utah – medium sized pace-bounce back on her yfull so not her strongest, but fine, chest up yfull, a little pike. 9.825

White hits bars 3rd up for Arizona State, step back on DLO. Good toe point positions.

Lopez – VT – Boise St – very similar to Bruden’s Yfull, good amplitude, slide back

Scharf – UB – ASU – short first hs – maloney to pak, som e legs on maloney, great height on pak – hits her 1/2 turn on low bar well – FTDT, hop back

Stanhope – VT – Utah – solid Y1.5 performances, small hop forward, a bit of knees.

Jackson – Ub – Utah State – hits a jaeger to overshoot, good amplitude, some feet deductions throughout – FTDT, small hop in place.

Clark – Ub – ASU – strong form on piked jaeger – pak, nicely done – she’s later on her 1/2 turn position on low bar – YIKKKERRS – got her timing all wrong, only did a double tuck dismount and hit her legs on the high bar, she seems fine but once again YIKES.

Rucker on vault for Utah with a lock-legged landing on her Y1.5 but survived it with a medium step back.

Blackson – VT – Boise State – nice Y1.5, some knees, small hop forward. Good.

Leonard-Baker – UB – ASU – maloney to bail to piked shoot to high bar – good work – one shrot hs – FTDT, stuck landing. Good work.

Burch – VT – Utah – holds onto the stick on her Y1.5, some knees, what is becoming her usual. 9.900 is reasonable score. We’ve seen meets where she gets 9.975 for doing the exact same thing.

Brooks – UB – Utah St – following a miss from Fishwick so needs a hit – short first hs – Ray to overshoot, better amplitude there – solid cast hs on high – DLO, legs apart, holds the stick

Utah 49.325 on vault – a solid score, though the progression was impeded by the Hall fall, and Rucker didn’t have her best with that lock-legged landing.

Utah State 49.000 on bars – that score was pretty high, especially for some of those missed vertical positions during the routines.

Arizona State 49.250 on bars – a couple really pretty routines in there like from Boyer, but they did have that scary fall from Clark. Nice performance overall. Earned every tenth.

Boise State 48.950 on vault – had a solid Y1.5 from Blackson for 9.850, the score I would have given but we’ve seen that vault go 9.925 for famous teams. A solid collection of fulls in there. This BSU meet is being responsibly evaluated so far.

Rotation 2

Mangahas – VT – ASU – not her strongest yfull, a little chest forward with a step forward

Cavinta – UB – BSU – good first hs – clear hip to tkatchev, hit, a little flat but fine – bail, hits vertical, slightly loose back – good toe point on hs – DLO, full tenth bounce back. 9.825

White – VT – ASU – solid Yfull, good chest up position – medium bounce back

Blackson – UB – BSU – good first hs – bail, gets to vertical well, a little pike in the air – blind to huge and excellent khorkina – DLO, a little deep, bounce back

Paulson – UB – Utah – maloney to pak, nice – good cast hs on high – giant full is kind of crooked into double tuck, lunge back. Sort of lost it toward the end there. 9.775

Deharde – VT – Utah St – late twist on yfull, gets it around, large bounce back –

Nilson – UB – Boise St – clear hip to tkatchev, hit, a bit higher – bail, just a tad short of vertical – DLO, pretty and stuck.

Sabado – Ub – Utah – blind to jaeger, solid – small hesitation in next hs – toe on to bail, a bit short of vertical – better final cast hs – DLO, lunge back

Lopez – UB – Boise St – blind to piked jaeger, solid – hits next cast hs – bail, again a bit short of vertical there – pretty solid cast hs – DLO, good

Le Varnadore with a hit y1/2, small hop

Leonard- Baker – VT – ASU – really solid yfull landing – holds the stick long enough, just a little flat off the table but nice

Rucker is in the bars lineup for Utah – does well to pull back her bail and avoid going over the wrong way – tkatchev is fine – double front with a stagger and a couple steps –

Muhlenhaupt – Ub – Boise state – jaeger to overshoot, lovely toes and amplitude – borderline final cast hs – DLO, stuck. beautiful.

ASU got a nice stick from Anaya Smith on her Y1.5. Strong work.

9.950 for Muhlenhaupt.

LeBlanc – Ub – Utah – hits high jaeger to overshoot, some flexed feet in jaeger, nice cast hs on high – DLO, stuck landing. Pretty work.

Little – UB – BSU – maloney to pak, hit, leoses her feet at the end – late 1/2 turn on low bar – DLO is lovely, small hop in place

Smith got 9.875 on vault for her stuck Y1.5 for a 49.050 total for ASU. Boise State 49.350 on bars thanks to Muhlenhaupt and handstands.

O’Keefe – UB – Utah – goos frist hs – maloney to pak, great amplitude – slightly loose on 1/2 turn on low – good cast hs on high – double arabian, high and stuck. Very nice.

Very clean yfull from Meyer on vault for Utah St – stuck landing, only a little pike. Good. 9.875

Isa – UB – Utah – Ray, solid – bail, maybe a tad short? – giant full to DLO, step back. 9.875

After 2: Boise State 98.300, Arizona State 98.300

Both teams doing well. Vault was not going to take the drugs for them (and we love vault for it), so scores a little supressed.

After 2: Utah 98.575, Utah State 98.175

I thought Utah was going to get a higher number out of bars based on what we saw Utah State get, but the first half of the rotation didn’t go great. Pretty work from LeBlanc and O’Keefe I thought. Utah State staying over that 49 average they want.

Rotation 3

Lopez – BB – Boise St – bhs loso series, secure, some soft knee positions – full turn – switch to one-arm bhs, good 180 on switch – split jump to straddle 1/4, her split positions are strong overall – kickover front, a bit deep, a check correction – punch front layout full, hop forward. 9.675.

Gutierrez – FX – ASU – 2.5, large lunge forward and OOB –

Burch – BB – Utah – bhs loso series, secure landing – split jump to stag ring, also solid – can’t really see much else from this angle other than whether it was secure or not – aerial with a larger check, bend at the hips to bring it back – gainer full, nearly holds the stick – step-salute. 9.725

Masiado – BB – Boise St – bhs loso series, solid – switch to switch 1/2, well short on switch 1/2 position – side aerial to tuck full, small hop in place. 9.775

Clark – FX – ASU – double pike, secure landing, just a tad mushy at the end but held it – double tuck, strong, chest up – switch to switch ring 1/2, which is short of split position and a little ragged – 1.5 to layout, stuck.

Stanhope – BB – Utah – bhs 1/1 to bhs, hit – switch to split jump, good elevation, right on – 1.5, holds the stick…kind of long enough? Hops around in salute. 9.875

Cavinta – BB – Boise St – bhs loso series, good extension – switch to split 1/4, short of position on switch – cat leap to aerial, works into her beat jump to avoid a check, some lack of sureness – gainer pike, small hop. 9.700

Boyer – FX – ASU – front lay to rudi, lovely layout position – double pike, large bounce back, possible OOB, looked to me like she kept her heel up – split leap full a bit shor tof 180. 9.850

Looks like floor scoring is loosening up at this one, but beam has been tighter. Like vault was.

Isa – BB – Utah – bhs loso loso, very small adjustment on landing – split to straddle 1/4, hit – bhs gainer full, small slide back. 9.900

Varnadore – FX – Utah St – double pike, some chest down, small slide back – 1.5 to layout, good layout position, slide forward – switch side to popa, nice popa position, lovely – double tuck, under control, chest down.

Paulson – BB – Utah – side aerial to loso is secure today – switch to split, good – cat leap to side aerial to full, leans to hold the stick. 9.900

Nice bhs bhs two-foot layout for Popp on beam for Boise St.

Wells – FX – utah St – double pike, bounce back – 1.5 through to to 2/1, better control there – good popa positions – rudi, a litle underrotated, hops it around

Scharf – FX – ASU – front tuck through to double tuck, solid landing – 1.5 to front fuck, slide forward – double pike, slightly deep but controls the landing

Randall – BB – Utah – bhs loso, smoothly done – sheep jump, very small correction – Rulfova, on – step forward on 1.5 dismount. 9.825

Muhlenhaupt – BB – Boise St – nice loso series, good extension – beat to sheep to split, mostly nice leg form, needs aslightly more closure on sheep – side aerial, little arm wave – 1.5 bounce forward

Leonard-Bkaer – FX – ASU – 1.5 to front full, comfortable – split leap full to wolf 1.5, a little short on split positions, nice height on leap – double pike, a little forward, step.

it’s 48.975 for Boise State on beam.

O’Keefe – BB – Utah – side aerial to loso, hit well – switch to split leap, lovely – full turn, small hesitation pulling the last 1/8 of a turn around – cat leap to side aerial to full, stuck. Not her very strongest but great. Still goes 9.950.

Gutierrez – FX – Utah State – front tcuk through to double tuck, solid, chest down – double pike, similar landing, under control but chest somewhat down

Arizona State goes 49.300 on floor to Boise State’s 48.975 on beam to take the lead, but that one is still open given how beam and floor scoring went there.

Utah went 49.450 on beam to Utah State’s 49.175 on floor. Utah is currently at 148.025, so will need more than 49.350 on floor to get a counting score today, which should be doable. But it may not increase their NQS all that much.

After 3:
Arizona State 147.600, Boise State 147.275
Utah 148.025, Utah State 147.350

Doesn’t look like Arizona State or Boise State are going to get those goal scores I noted at the beginning, so all the other teams will be very happy about how that meet has been evaluated.

Rotation 4

Thompson – BB – ASU – bhs bhs loso, hit – switch to straddle 1/4, somewhat tight on those dance element positions – side aerial to full, stuck. Good. 9.850

Masiado – FX – Boise St – double pike, hit, chest forward – switch to wolf 1.5, flexed feet there – front lay to front full, solid – rudi, keeps front foot down. 9.875

Gutierrez – BB – ASU – bhs loso, hit – rulfova, nicely done – beat to switch side, somewhat crooked position – 1.5, lunge forward

Wells leading off beam for Utah State with an actually real split jump 3/4 with a non-bad position.

Smith – FX – Boise St – large bounce back on double pike, just stayed in – 1.5 to layout, has to tuck the layout some to get it around – double tuck, somewhat forward with a step.

Randall – FX – Utah – double tuck, overdoes it, a couple lunges back – nice elevation on dance elements – double pike, holds the landing despite being a little forward – 1.5 to layout, struggles some, low, a little tucking. Will need to drop that. 9.650

Varnadore – BB – Utah St – bhs los, secure, knee bending – aerial, check, breaks connection into beat jump – switch to split, hit – gainer tuck 1.5, small step.

Isa – FX – Utah – double tuck, secure landing, chest up – double pike welll short, hands down. Now that 9.650 will count.

White – BB – ASU – bhs loso series, very strong, good layout position – aerial to beat jump, lovely as well – split jump to stag ring, verrry small hesitation on landing, almost nothing – side aerial to layout full, hop back

ASU hitting but the difference between beam and floor scoring becoming very apparent in this rotation.

Popp – FX – Boise St – front tuck through to double pike, solid landing, chest down – switch 1/2 to popa to popa, good straddles positions, somewhat bouncy on landing – double tuck, slide back. 9.925.

These floor scores are SAILING now. This meet was being so respectifully scored for a while, and now…

Paulson – FX – Utah – front lay to front full to stag, solid – 2.5, controls the step, just some leg crossing – switch to switch full, good positions – 1.5 to layout with a little slide out. Much better.

Clark for ASU falls on her loso series in the 5th spot.

Blackson – FX – Boise St – front 2/1, very confident landing, completes it actually before landing, good – 1/2 to front layout, soft knees in that one – rudi, a little steppy on landing. 9.900

Stanhope – FX – Utah – huge full in, step back, controls it from being a problem but a little out of control – double tuck, very solid landing – 1.5 to layout comfortable. 9.900

Scharf – BB – ASU – wolf turn, hit – loso series is comfortable, smallest adjustment – side somi “really unique” check on it – swithc to split, good positions – 1.5, step. Good.

Nilson – FX – Boise St – front lay to rudi, just a tad front foot movement there – a little tight on her straddle position – double pike is an issue, short landing with a bounce forward

Scharf 9.850 and ASU will finish on 196.700. Boise State will just sneak out the victory with 196.750.

Rucker – FX – Utah – excellent full in – switch and split elements have great extension and height, just a little steppy on landing – front lay to front full, a little slide forward. 9.900

Bayles – BB – Utah St – aerial, keeps herself moving into bhs bhs to avoid a check – switch to tuck jump 3/4, very solid – 1.5, stuck. Nice finish.

Soloski – FX – Utah – DLO, very strong landing, under control – switch 1/2 to split jump full, good positions – front lay to front full, keeps back foot down, just some knees – 1.5 to layout, very clean in the air, a little soft finding the landing

Utah State is done with a 196.450.

Soloski’s 9.950 will bring Utah to 197.275, which means it will not be a counting score for them.

Utah State, Boise State, and Arizona State will all improve their NQSs marginally with these scores, but not enough to do anything real to the rankings.

Utah now vulnerable to being passed by Cal for the top seed in the Pac-12 should Cal get a 197.200 on Sunday. So that should be interesting.

  1. Where do they find these guys who don’t know a thing about gymnastics? Or is “Do you think that fall is going to hurt his score?” his idea of a smooth segue to talking about scoring?

  2. I assume the correction will be made to Heiskell’s score. They can’t keep that 9.975 on a 9.95 vault.

    1. this was the debut of her 1.5! Michigan has 7 on the roster including Brenner now

      1. Thank you. I didn’t see the vault so assumed she did her full. I am slapping my own hand.

    2. I love how Jane felt the need to complain about this twice in a Facebook group and here. Must really be bothering her!!

  3. So, this vault rotation for Michigan (49.800) is the second highest scored rotation this season on all events after Cal’s 49.825 on bars last week, not quite their program record though. Interesting..

  4. Is 49.8 a NCAA record for vault? Definitely over scored but still a fantastic vault rotation, easily 49.6 or maybe a little higher with more realistic scoring.

    1. According to Spencer’s stats it’s third behind Georgia’s 49.925 and LSU & Michigan itself with 49.825.

  5. Bauman 9.925, Wilson 9.975, this is off to a great start. The vault rotation repeating itself?

  6. Michigan with a new program record a week after setting the last one, going 198+ for the second time ever (both in this season and consecutive) going 198.100

  7. Michigan will have 10 Y1.5s next year: Brenner, Heiskell, Wojcik, Brooks, Wilson, Morrison, Guggino + Vore, Lane, and Vides. Is this the deepest lineup ever?

side note I wish UCLA was able to upgrade their vaults at half the speed that Michigan and OU do.

    1. I don’t think UCLA has found any but the very best 1.5s to be a net win. Chae and Nia are awesome vaulters and 1.5able, but you don’t want to turn a 9.925 into a 9.9 by upgrading.

  8. Don’t look at Rucker’s vault in slow-mo. She’s definitely injured.

  9. UGH, Carol skoring everywhere and Maile O’Keefe *under*scored on a gorgeous bar routine with a stuck double Arabian dismount. 🤮

    1. That 1/2 pirouette on low bar was rushed and short, but I wouldn’t have taken .1 for it.
Utah will slay in post-season, they have been consistently been scored tighter than… everybody?

      1. I’d love it. And, they have been super consistent scoring-wise. But, can’t say I’m a believer as far as nationals goes. I’m just hoping they get there…

And how does Adrian Randall always go 9.825? I get that she doesn’t stick the landing and her sheep jump is a little rough but that score just seems too damn low compared to what else is out there.

    2. Yes. The 1/2 on low was an extremely minor problem. 9.95 would have been perfectly reasonable.

    1. Many of us do not share that same wish. This is the first year in many years that I am enjoying the beauty of their gymnastics.

  10. Is there an artistry deduction in NCAA? Cause some of these Aggie floor routines, they look so bored i can’t even watch the “dance.” Plus a big lunge/slide back on a tumbling pass, and scores in the 9.8+ range?

  11. The floor music of the exhibition routine from Utah State sounds familiar. Any idea who also used that music?

  12. Utah being scored pretty tight compared to others tonight (Georgia and Michigan). Burch and Stanhope vaults would have been 9.95 and okeefe on bars. And Randall on beam would all have been higher at the other meets

  13. I am saying this not even half through their floor, but I feel that Utah hasn’t hit their full potential in any meet this season. They’ve always had at least one fluke rotation. Still they were able to remain in 5th because they always managed to score in a consistent range. But I really hope they get it together for post-season because they really are good. Today they seemed off on every single rotation (and now Isa fell), so ughh

    1. I do really hope Utah can pull it all together. They will likely drop in the rankings again and be the #2 seed in the PAC12’s. Cal only needs a 197.2 to pass them and they are home and it’s senior night. That last Cal home meet had completely crack scoring. Cal was on for all events, just over scored. I guess we’ll see.

  14. They just need to drop Clark’s triple series. Hasn’t she fallen on it three times in a row now?

    1. Nope that was only the second. Last week she technically fell on the beam but had a good run going prior to that.

  15. Utah’s quality of gymnastics has been pretty good this season but I agree with the other comments above about Utah being underscored. Other teams are getting 10s and 9.975s with obviously errors in routines. Utah is getting half a tenth lower on lots of routines compared to other teams. Tonight Utah didn’t look hot but a lot of routines are getting tighter scores than other teams. Score tight or score loose but just be consistent with the two teams. Utah hasn’t had that all season but hopefully that will be good for their mental toughness at nationals when they don’t get a 9.95 just for being there.

    1. When comments are made regarding over scores this is where it hurts teams. Utah scores this season have been realistic an occasional bump but nothing insane. They have actually been under scored more often than over scored. This meet is a prime example. O’keefe, LeBlanc lower than other teams on bars. Burch and Stanhope lower on vault; Randall on beam and floor (I know that she had a big error but comparatively not that big) and at UCLA reucker would have gone 9.95 and Paulson a9.9. You add that up and the meet was way under scored by .2 to .25. Doesn’t seem huge but in this case it definitely affects placement. These mini lower scores have been in the Utah box all season and while I’d agree that they have yet to have their perfect meet compared with the other teams consistently over scored they are hanging on despite the inequity. If they end up placed behind Cal (who have done well this year but over scored a fair amount) at PAC-12 where 3 of their events are definitely better then that is the victim of the over scores
