  1. Thanks for this (and pacific times). You’re the only good thing that has happened today.

  2. guys Norah Flatley posted full routines on instagram with the caption “comeback just in time” I hope we see her this weekend!!

    1. A news reporter recently tweeted: ‘Bars only’ for Norah Flatley at Pac12 Championships.
Her 2020 Bars NQS was 9.885. In 2021 NCAA scoring terms, that would be 10.1 now.

  3. I can’t wait for this weekend! First weekend of March Madness and gymnastics conference championships?!?! I will be using all devices to watch all the things. Suck it, covid! NCAA is back-ish now.

  4. Georgia is out of SECs due to covid-related issues. I feel bad for them, but thankfully there is a break before regionals. Hopefully, they’ll be healthy for regionals (although they’ll likely drop in the rankings now).

  5. I heard it was a coach. So, why would entire team need to quarantine. CDC policy is they have to be 6ft for 15 consecutive minutes. Unless they were so careless to have a meeting in small rooms where they would not meet these guidelines. Now they have a good chance of not being a seeded team for regionals. Seems like you would want to ensure all
Precautions as you head into post season, so this would not happen. Does this mean they will not be in a gym for 10 days?

    1. They won’t be seeded for regionals. They’re in a tie for 16th and lose the tiebreak. NQS can’t go down this year so they’ll be unseeded.

    2. Maybe it’s more than just the coach? We really don’t know the whole story.

    3. They likely have to follow UGA’s and the SEC’s policy. I know some conferences and schools have stricter requirements than the CDC. I know some football programs shut down just because people had maintained relatively close contact and that then wiped out entire position groups, even though only one person tested positive.

Also, can we stop with blaming and shaming programs who have had covid issues? Nearly every school in the country has dealt with it. Someone posted a list of all the March madness teams that have had at least one covid related shutdown. Out of 68 teams, there were about seven that haven’t reported an issue.

      1. You would think, though, that teams and personnel would be extra careful before SECs and post-season.

      2. yo, BITCH? Can we stop with the laughable cliches like ‘blaming and shaming’ applied to RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR DURING A FUCKING PANDEMIC?
        God, you’re a moron.

      3. ‘Responsible behavior during a pandemic’ would likely mean axing non-essential activities like athletics which require close interaction such as use of athletic trainers or spotting and out of state travel every two weeks. And as responsible as people are it all comes down to the weakest link associated with your weakest link. And they made it 5 or 6 months without any other blips so they obviously were reasonably careful.

      4. @Anonymous at 6:57 AM: When screwups happen, extensive questioning about exactly what protocols were/were NOT followed is normal. That is the case with things far less lethal than pandemics. To call this process ‘blaming and shaming’ is worthy of Faux Noise MAGAtrash deluxe. The assumption behind ‘they made it 5 or 6 months without any other blips so they obviously were reasonably careful’ is equally laughable–if catastrophic COVID-spreader behavior from Rand fucking Paul, Marjorie GANGreene, endless Karens in endless public settings etc ad INFINITUM goes utterly unpunished (and indeed applauded by Rapeublicunts!) how stupid are you to think NCAA athletics is incapable of similar responses?

      5. Good lord, you are a twat. I work at a public university and trust me-too aside from going remote, you are not completely stopping this. There are simply too many situations where ideal procedures are not/cannot bevfollowed or people let their guard down. And you cannot contril the ones who simply do not care. I’ve seen entire departments either quarantine or hit 80% positive even being diligent. Anything short of full lock down is like wearing a condom-fully reasonable but only 95% effective. But feel free to rant on- you obviously have a need to spew crap totally unrelated to the subject at hand.

    4. People who are careful and cautious still get covid. Nothing is 100% unless you have years of supplies & live in a bunker.
They didn’t get covid on purpose.

And we don’t ACTUALLY know what happened. If it is a coach, yeah the whole team probably was exposed, especially if it’s a coach that spots. Maybe they were all wearing masks & it wasn’t passed on, but we don’t know. And even if it was passed on, they didn’t pass it on purposefully.

Maybe their covid regulations could be better. But that doesn’t mean they want ppl to get covid. It more likely means, they just don’t understand still. Shaming & blaming won’t get them there.

      1. Ooooo, it’s the cliche-ridden MORON who loves vulgar imbecilic neologisms like ‘shaming and blaming’ again! News flash, ASS WIPE: most people who are careful and cautious DON’T get COVID; most people who double mask, have groceries delivered or shop at off hours with almost no one in the store, do not ‘go out’ anywhere now, and have completely limited their excursions FOR THE PAST GODDAMN YEAR DO NOT GET COVID. People like YOU who eat out in restaurants regularly, attend superspreader events, and do not give a shit–not so much! I speak from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, you fucking cretinous amoebic slime mold.

      2. @Anonymous at 10:43 and the 8:37 person further up —

Maybe I should have been more clear in my blaming/shaming comment. I’m a cardiac ICU nurse. Over the last year, I’ve sat with people as they die because family wasn’t allowed in. I’ve called people and told them their loved one wasn’t going to make it. I’ve held phones to patients ears so their family can talk to them one last time. I’ve heard people question whether their husband’s/wife’s/grandmother’s/son’s/etc. death was their fault because they went into work one time or went grocery shopping in person. I’ve had patients who have followed every rule get sick. I’ve also watched patients walk out the door saying “that wasn’t as bad as the media says” after they were literally on oxygen in the ICU.

The reality is that most people feel slight shame or guilt upon a covid diagnosis because we ask where have you been, were you wearing a mask, etc. Blaming them won’t heal them. Using hatred or calling people ignorant won’t lead to positive changes in behaviors. When you hear someone is diagnosed with cancer, do you ask if they are overweight, do they regularly exercise, eat nutritious food, smoke, drink, etc? I hope not. Support them and encourage them. Let the health care professionals and their families attempt to encourage healthy lifestyle attitudes.

Or maybe you are right? Maybe I’m a bitch and a moron because I care, respect people, and want people to be healthy.

  6. You would think, though, that teams and personnel would be extra careful before SECs and post-season.

    1. Keep in mind they have themselves, roommate’s, team support staff, and the like they already interact with. Those coaches also have twelve kids combined and at least three spouses so I’m sure someone requires child care. ThTs spreading a wide net in terms of exposure. It’s too bad because they were finally getting back all the routines they needed minus about three and had finally seen the light on pulling some elements that were never getting hit. Are they allowed to practice right now?

      1. The coaches should have been vaccinated .Unless they don’t believe in science. Well this is Georgia so…

      2. The coaches should be vaccinated when it’s their turn and given that they are all relatively young and healthy, I’m guessing they should still be waiting.

      3. I’m not sure any of the coaches are eligible yet. I’m in a neighboring state and availability is still limited. I think their oldest coach is only in his forties. They expanded it to teachers in my state but not colleges. And don’t blame all of us for the knuckle daggers that make the majority of our voters. The educated areas are actually the lowest availability because that is where people actuallt sign up so Athens might be in a similar spot.

      4. Even if they were vaccinated the protocol might still apply, since there isn’t yet conclusive evidence that the vaccine prevents transmission.

      5. Why should the coaches be vaccinated already? In the vast majority of states they wouldn’t be eligible yet. Are you wanting coaches to cut the line?

    2. It’s so easy to make one mistake, have one hole in your routine or network that you don’t know about until the virus makes it through.

All in all, gymnastics seems to have done a middling job with masking but a good job with actual control. It’s definitely good that UGA is actually not going to SECs. Someone had to have backbone and use it to protect people in a postseason situation that does actually matter. That’s practically unprecedented in this sport.

There are so many things in addition to masks that we don’t see, like the testing and contact tracing programs, that are working well. We saw a few interruptions, but no disastrous outbreaks on teams. All in all, I still wish I had seen better masking from most programs but this could have been a whole hell of a lot worse.

  7. Do conference championships count toward NQS? I’m always confused about that.

    1. Yes, but for conference championships held in a particular team’s home venue (like Pitt for the EAGL meet), it has to count as a home score. If it’s at a neutral venue (like SECs), it’s an away meet for everyone.

      1. Clarification: it has to count as a home score for the home team. So EAGLs are a home meet for Pitt and an away meet for everyone else. SECs are an away meet for all teams.

  8. A little concerned with Alabama. When the storms hit, students sheltered in close quarters. Maybe no athletes but this could be a covid concern.

Regarding the boot… I’ve seen several gymnasts in boots this year and they consistently compete so probably just a precaution.

  9. I don’t think anyone is shaming them. Gymnastics is considered a low transmission risk sport, so if they are keeping distancing and monitoring athletes activities when not in gym then the chances of infection are going to be less. I think many are just pointing out that they have made it this far, so extra precautions should be maintained so that the team or athletes do not get in this position. I feel for the athletes, especially seniors that have lost so much opportunity. No one can say for sure if this was avoidable, but I hope teams are over precautious just so this does not happen. I hope Georgia can get it together because I do not want to hear this be an excuse for why their season was not great. They are going to be unseeded into regionals for a reason, not because of this situation with Covid. They have been inconsistent all year.

    1. Yes, that was my point exactly. You’d thing SEC would be so important to them, that they’d be extra careful. But things happen.

      1. As a teacher who was forced into a small classroom with 21 students and unable to properly socially distance all the time, I was EXTRA EXTRA careful. Face mask and face shield always on, constantly sanitizing my hands, constantly washing them in the classroom sink.
Keeping to 6 feet as much as possible away from students (which is nearly impossible when working with 2nd graders), didn’t touch desks or computers without putting gloves on and wiping them with sanitizing sheets, sprayed my room with Lysol when the kids were at lunch. Despite ALL of these precautions and doing my absolute BEST to be extra careful, I still got Covid from one of my students (who ended up giving it to three other classmates as well).
It is a bit disrespectful and presumptuous to assume that they WEREN’T being extra careful. You can still get Covid despite trying your best not to. Trust me from my own experience. I was completely pissed off, especially since it occurred December 22 and I had to spend Christmas home alone and sick in bed. Someone had the nerve to tell me that I was lax and not careful enough! There is nothing that could have prevented me from getting it. Thank god my auto-immune deficient wife went to go live with her parents and stayed in quarantine with them once they made us go back to school end of August. I would never have been able to live with myself if I passed it to her and she got extremely sick or died.

      1. Man – that has got to be a long meet – and talk about doing a cold routine if you do one event and it’s the last rotation.

    1. That is how conference meets always were 20 plus years ago. Big Ten had only 7 teams (Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota) until Nebraska joined from Big 12 and Rutgers and Maryland joined from EAGL. Pac 10 was 7 teams until it became Pac 12 and Utah joined. SEC was also 7 teams until Arkansas started a team in 2001.

      1. SEC was only seven teams until 2012 when Missouri switched conferences somehow. I was fortunate enough to attend SECs in 2010, and those seven rotations actually went by pretty fast! It’s got to be rough for the athletes, thoug.

  10. Some of these comments are ridiculous. Can we please start treating each other with respect? This site used to be awesome and now the comments are getting atrocious. I know it’s easy to troll when you can stay anonymous, but come on people. The world is crazy enough, we don’t need hate to spread to a freaking gymnastics blog.
