So if last night is any indication, it’s time to get ready for our world bronze medalist South Korean team.
Today, we have Japan entering as the major favorite after their unique non-disaster of a qualification performance that outpaced everyone else by 8 points. The big mystery is China. China had a deeply terrible qualification performance to place 4th, and while we would typically expect that to be reversed in the team final for a gold/silver-level performance, Sun Wei is a major question mark after his qualification injury. He’s slated for four events today, including floor and vault, but if he is not able to hit, there’s no way China can make up 10 points on their qualification performance the way one might otherwise think they could.
As for Great Britain and the US, neither had a strong performance in qualification, with GB ending up a half point ahead of the US, so it’s really going to come down to who flops fewer times today.
Intros starting now. Pretty sure “Stephen Ned-erotic” was just introduced. Brazil is going for a HOODIES milieu for their intro. A TRY.
On to the warmups for the first rotation.
Rotation 1
Tanigawa K – FX – front front pike 1/2 out, bounce back – front 2/1 to layout, stuck – double double tuck, stuck – 2.5 to front full, side pass, hit – double arabian 1/2 out, stuck landing. Amazing start for Japan.
Asher Hong through a hit pommel horse, and Nory hits a clean Kas 1.5, small hop.
14.566 for Nory. 13.566 for Hong.
Sun Wei is off on pommel horse. The first break of the day belongs to China. Again.
Still waiting on Tanigawa’s score. Just give him a 50. Alright 14.400
Abbadini SR – 13.033
Hall – FX – GBR – double double tuck, bounce back – double arabian 1/2 out, bounce back – front 2/1 to front full, small hop – 1.5 to layout, hop – randi, chest forward, little hop – 3/1, step.
Sun Wei 13.633
Brody Malone technically dismounted but mostly just heaved himself sideways off the horse, so he’ll need to get up and do it again.
14.500 for Caio Souza’s Dragulescu with two steps.
14.200 for Hall on FX.
Hashimoto – FX – Japan – triple double is quite short, bound forward – double double, also a little short with a hop – front full to randi, good, small hop – 2/1, stuck – 2.5 to layout, super clean, little shuffle back – 3/1, bounce back. Fine, not his strongest.
Guimaraes hits a doubel front on vault, though it was very deep, bounces up quickly.
Malone just 11.733 on horse. SO there’s that.
Zhang Boheng puts up a hit for China on horse. 13.966
Near fall for Kin Hansol on vault, very deep
Regini Moran – FX -OOB step on triple double – double double, small step forward – 2.5 to front lay to 1.5, small hop – 2/1, bounce back – doubel front pike 1/2 out, stuck, well done – randi, short landing, lunge – 3/1, little hop forward.
Ned-Erotic had a large leg break on a Russian so not as strong as qualification, but a good hit overall.
Malone D score inquiry is rejected.
Regini Moran 14.166.
Doi – FX – double double tucked, bounce back – back 1.5 to front 2/1, hop forward – back 2.5 to front 1.5, somewaht low, good control – 3.5, small hop – 3/1 bounce back. Good.
WOAH Nedoroscik got 12.966. So I must have missed something. Also just a 5.1 D score.
13.433 for Yang Jiaxing to finish horse for China.
Doi 14.366 on floor.
Jarman – FX – triple double layout, hit, hop forward – triple double tucked, bounce – back 2.5 to front 1/2 to 1/2, stuck, some piking – 3/1 side pass, hop – front full to randi, bounce back – 3.5 dismount, hop. Hit, lots of hops.
They have submitted an inquiry for Nedoroscik’s horse D score of 5.1.
So that does it for the first rotation. The big loser there was the US with a Nedoroscik score in the 12s to drop them nearly 4 points from their qualification total on horse. Pretty much everyone else will be OK with their prospects after the first event.
Rotation 2
James Hall is off PH on a Tong Fei to make the US feel better.
Zou’s v sit on rings gets a big roar – double double tuck dismount, near stuck, small step.
Levantesi hits a double front on vault with a step
12.200 on horse for Hall.
14.866 on rings for Zou. As China’s leadoff.
Hashimoto definitely through a hit on horse this time – Malone is taking some time to secure handstands on rings before his dismount, small step.
Casali vaults a Kas 2/1 with leg form, step to the side, for Italy.
14.433 for Hashimoto, 13.766 for Malone.
Zapata crashes a double front on vault, does not attempt the posted Dragulescu. Jarman stays on horse for 12.566.
You Hao has a large lunge back on his rings dismount.
Doi is off horse for Japan. It looked like he whacked his leg on the horse at the very beginning and then fell not that far into his routine.
Bartolini large bound forward on Kas 1.5
Caio Souza with a lovely front straddle on PBars – tippelt, good height and handstand – double front 1/2, small hop.
Asher Hong bounce back on rings dismount.
13.033 for Doi.
14.033 for Hong on rings.
Joe Fraser just had the most ridiculous horse routine, with a couple early form breaks and then a full Nedoroscik-at-trials where it was miraculous that he stayed on – but then he came off shortly after – and then another large break when he resumed. Oh dear.
Joe Fraser goes full Tang Xijing with a 10.466.
Tanigawa K just stepped down from one pommel. Falls later in his routine. And then sort of flopped apart on his dismount after that.
Whittenburg sticks double double layout on rings.
Well Japan and GB just joined the US in the YUCK YUCK POMMELS club, definitely starting to open the door for someone to have a Canada moment.

Doi – VT – Japan – gorgeous yurchenko 2.5, stuck landing. 14.700
You does have a larger hop forward on his doubel front 1/2 out dismount, but will be a huge improvement on his 12 from qualification as Japan has to start being nervous now.
Jarman – VT – Falls on his Kas 2.5 attempt, large lunge forward and off the mat and all kinds of hands down. 13.733
Important 14.366 from Guimaraes on floor for Brazil.
14.666 for You gains almost 2 points on qualification by himself.
Hong – PB – good bhavsar – tippelt, solid height – makuts, hit – finishes with a very deep double front 1/2, but lands it with hop forward.
Wataru vault – excellent handspring double front pike, hop forward. 14.766

13.966 for Malone.
Zou’s PBars double front 1/2 out is what dreams are made of. Can the Chinese men’s team go to the Chinese women’s team and do a clinic on turning it around from qualification?
Macchini with a very nice hit for Italy on high bar, which keeps hitting routines in its quest to be a Canada but also still has to do horse.
15.766 for Zou. LOLOLOLOL.
Walker – PB – front toss – makuts, hit – peach – long swing diam – bhavsar, solid height – tippelt, good height – healy – stutz, double front, small hop forward. Some formies but a good one.
So China is way out in front now, Brazil hanging onto 2nd but still with horse to do, Japan moves back up to 3rd, and USA is in 4th. Italy in 5th.

And Souza is off horse to complete the triple fall for Brazil.
14.300 for Kakeru on PBars.
Fraser on Pbars to anchor, sticks his dismount to keep GB in this as well going to the final rotation.
Fraser went 15.000 on Pbars to put GB back in the race for bronze. It looks like China, then Japan, and then a race between Italy, GB, and the US for bronze. “Italy” he began to whisper over and over again.
Rotation 6
Sun – FX – double double, stuck – front 2/1 to front lay, a little slidely – 2/1, holds stick with a lean – 2.5 to front full, small hop – 3/1, step back. So I guess he was mostly OK today?

Kamoto – Hb – lay tkatchev, hit – Cassina, hit – Kolman, also solid – tkatchev – inbar – stalder – DLO 2/1, step back.
Nooooooo Abbadini’s hand slips off on his pommel horse dismount and he clatters front first to the ground.
So basically GB has the bronze is their hands now if Jarman stars on HB in any kind of manner.

With Whittenburg’s 13.466, the US will finish behind Italy, who will take 4th.
