A couple big ones on the schedule to round out the weekend. We have the Michigan/Michigan State clash, which is the most real it has ever been in gymnastics this year given the rise of Michigan State, and then in a staggered start we have the regular season’s lone meet on Big ESPN between Utah and Oklahoma. Michigan, Oklahoma, and Utah are all in contention for the #1 ranking today with Michigan and Oklahoma currently tied at the top after Florida’s lower score on Friday.

Garcia – VT – MSU – nearly finds the stick on her Yfull, started out with good layout, pikes down to try to find it and ends up with a step back and chest down. 9.775

Heiskell – UB – Mich – good first hs – blind, slightly crooked when arriving in hs – jaeger nice – pak, high, legs together – good cast hs on high – giant full, solid finish position, double tuck, good. 9.875

Schulte – VT – MSU – nice stick on her yfull, clean in the air, just a bit forward coming in. 9.900. We’re flying early.

Koulos – UB – Mich – short first hs – blind to jaeger, nice – better second hs – bail, pikes a little in the air but comes in to a good vertical – short on final cast hs – DLO, hit, legs apart, small movement. 9.800

Zsarmani – VT – MSU – hits her yfull but has a shuffle back, two distinct small steps. 9.825 is high.

Morrison – UB – Michigan – instead of Bauman in the lineup today – good frist hs – gienger, nice height, loses her legs a bit at the end – clear hip – bail, some hip angle in catch there – finishes DLO, nice form but shorter landing, hop forward. 9.825

Kellerman – VT – MSU – handspring pike 1/2, comes in with a strong stick. Will have some deductions for being really close to the table and somewhat deep. 9.850

Wilson – UB – Michigan – solid first hs – blind to piked jaeger, secure – a bit of angle in hs on high – legs together on bail, some angle in most of her verticals here – DLO, hop forward. 9.775

Nikki Smith – VT – MSU – sticks her y1.5 – very good, just a bit of knees and direction. Nice. 9.950

Brooks – UB – Michigan – nice hs – blind to piked jaeger, solid form – good hs on high – toe on to bail, perfection in toes and vertical position – borderline final cast – DLO 1/1, a little short, small hop forward. 9.825

Stephen – VT – MSU – yfull, nearly finds the stick, arm swing to try to hold onto it and then ends up taking a step salute anyway – great height and open position, challenging Chae Campbell in the air. 9.875

Wojcik – UB – Michigan – toe on to deltchev to overshoot, great – good final cast hs – DLO, short landing, step forward. They’re not sticking these dismounts and getting hit for steps and body position. 9.800

Nyah Smith in exhibition as well as Kaylen Morgan for Michigan – maloney to pak is nicely done, double front dismount, small movement. Yeah, she’s close to being ready for lineup and would have outscored a couple of the routines today.

Big lead for Michigan State after 1: 49.400 to 49.125

Good landing control for Michigan State today on vault to help beef up the score, several sticks, a couple doing pretty much their best vaults, but the judges also going high there early in this one with Michigan’s vaulting rotation still to come. We’ll see if they have judged themselves into a corner. Michgan mostly lost it on the dismount landings there. Almost all of them incurring .150 just on position and steps on dismount. They were semi-conservative on Heiskell’s 9.875 in the leadoff spot, but then no one was better than her.

Mulligan – VT – Mich – No Guggino today – good amplitude on yfull, pretty solid chest up position, medium step back – a bit of legs on block. 9.825

Schulte – UB – MSU – good first hs – shaposh with leg form to bail, short of vertical there – arches over handstand on high bar and comes off. Resumes with her dismount DLO, pretty. Stuck. 9.325

Wojcik – VT – Mich – Y1.5 – lands deep today but pulls it out – deduction for short landing and the bounce back. 9.850 is very high for that vault.

Stephen – UB – MSU – good first hs on low – toe on to maloney, some position on catch but nice in the air, good height – clear hip to bail, clean body position – quite short cast hs on high – FTDT, nearly holds the stick, step back into salute. 9.800

Heiskell – VT – Mich – beautiful Y1.5, overcooks it with a bounce forward and then an additional step-salute. She had come up under in the final warmup vault. 9.775

Jackard – UB – MSU – good first hs – blind to jaeger, clean – a bit short on hs – bail, legs together – solid cast hs on high – giant full a little past into double tuck, stuck. 9.850

Morrison – VT – Mich – Y1.5, also with a pretty large bounce forward but more control than Heiskell. Good position in the air. 9.875

Brooks – VT – Mich – Y1.5 – lands just a tad under, small movement back. Can probably get away with .05 on the movement, but was still short. And gets 9.900. Michigan getting the same benefit as MSU in these vault scores.

Nikki Smith – UB – MSU – toe on is short – maloney to pak, some feet but good leg position – cast 1/2 on  low, good finish position – hits final cast hs – DLO, stuck landing, nice. 9.850

Wilson – VT – Mich – Y1.5 – nearly sticks, their best one so far, but a little hop forward and some direction. 9.925

Harkness – UB _ MSU _ toe on is clean to gienger, nice legs together – bail, hit – some borderline cast hs verticals – FTDT, small slide back and lands a bit staggered. 9.875

Kaylen Morgan is exhibition again for Michigan.

Another rotation in which Michigan underperformed expectations with mostly uncontrolled landings, but here they got away with a reasonable score on 49.375. MSU goes 49.250 on bars primarily thanks to better landing control than Michigan showed for their 49.125, pretty much throughout the lineup.

Brooks – FX – Mich – FTDT, good chest up, small slide back with front foot – split leap full to split jump full, great positions – front tuck through to double tuck, nailed the landing. Good. 9.950

Oklahoma/Utah starting now. Rotation 1.

Sievers – VT – OU – Y1.5, nailed the landing to start. So this will be a good test of the scoring here. Some knees, we’ll see bigger vaults, great landing. 9.950

Morgan – UB – Utah – good first hs – maloney, som legs into bhardwaj, hit, just a tad of foot position at the very end – 1/2 turh on low – toe on to toe pike 1/2 dismount, finds the landing, but ends up shuffling forward out of it. 9.825

Torrez – VT – OU – nearly finds the landing on her Y1.5 – a little short with a small shuffle back, some direction, more distance than Sievers. 9.775. They actually took for short vault, which is nice to see.

Michigan State got 9.850 from Garcia to finish beam on 49.275. Wilson came up a little short on her final double tuck with a rebound. Still goes 9.875 for a 49.550 floor total for Michigan and the lead.

Brenner – UB – Utah – shortish first hs – blind to jaeger, caught into overshoot – some vertical positions here but OK – DLO, not the highest, small slide back. 9.850

Stern – VT – OU – she also finds the stick on her Y1.5 – more distance than Sievers, I’d say still a little bit of stagger and lean on landing, but it was also better than the Sievers 9.950 so we’ll see what happens.

Thompson – UB – Utah – hits first hs – pak, very clean – maloney to gienger, some leg break in swing – can’t get up to handstand, way way short, basically horizontal – DLO dismount, swim and a lean to hold onto the landing. 9.675

Bowers – VT – OU – Y1.5 is also excellent, a bigger vault than Sievers and Stern but also a little bit of a step on landing and some direction. 9.950.

O’Keefe – UB – Utah – good first hs – maloney to pak, legs together well – 1/2 turn on low – short final cast hs on high – double arabian, small amount of legs, drops into a good stick. 9.850

Levasseur – VT – OU – beautiful Y1.5 in the air – I would say the best combination of form and distance so far, but also not a completely secure landing with that little lean onto toes and salute. 9.925

Isa – UB – Utah – Ray, hit – bail, good vertical, toes pointed – giant full is right on top, connected to DLO, holds the stick with some chest position. 9.875

Davis – VT – OU – Y1.5, dropping the level some there – a larger bounce forward and a big leg break on her block. 9.850

McCallum – UB – Utah – maloney to pak, legs together – solid hs on high – van leeuwen, clips her legs on the low bar – FTDT, small rebound. 9.750. Hitting the apparatus is .200 so that’s high for me with the dismount and the form that happened after the leg hit.

It’s a 49.650 on vault for Oklahoma, four really excellent vaults there that also highlighted the problem NCAA judging has when multiple routines are great because they have to be high into the 9.9s since normal with errors is scoring 9.850, but then they all get the same scores for not the same execution, height, and distance.

Like, I want to say Levasseur’s was the best one?

Exceptional rotation from Oklahoma, while Utah was fine on bars but had the big handstand error from Thompson and the bars hit from McCallum, so the McCallum score had to count, exacerbating the disparity between the two thus far.

Michigan took over the lead on MSU after 3 events, but MSU gets to finish on floor, so still right in this. Michigan starts beam with 9.825 from Bauman, MSU starts floor with 9.875 from Nyah Smith.

Rotation 2

Hoffman – VT – Utah – hits a solif yfull, medium bounce back, not as much height as the later Oklahoma vaults. 9.825

Sievers – UB – Oklahoma – small arch in first hs – maloney to pak, lovely, legs together – 1/2 turn on low – FTDT, good stick, doesn’t rise super high, but enough. 9.875

Brenner – VT – Utah – really good landing on her Y1.5 – small hop to the side, some knees and direction. 9.875

Torrez – UB – Oklahoma – good first hs – maloney to psk, some form on maloney, good on pak – 1/2 turn on low is well done – a bit short on final cast hs – DLO, good landing.

Stanhope – VT – Utah – great distance on Y1.5 but comes up under, also step back, actually a second step as well. 9.800

R Smith – UB – OU – good first hs – Ray, some position – another good cast – toe on to pak, clean – 1/2 turn on low was good but she overkips on the low bar and can’t start to cast and adds an empty swing – finishes DLO with a small hop. 9.700

Rucker – VT – Utah – great stick on her Y1.5 as well – good height, some knees – same stick and knee form as Stern but more height, so we’ll see. And it’s 9.975 for her as well.

Sierra Brooks splits the beam for Michigan, so they’ll need to drop that.

Bowers – UB – OU – good first hs – blind to jaeger, lovely and high in the air, elbows on catch? – hits cast hs – pak, perfect – 1/2 turn on low is solid – hitting all handstands – FTDT, nearly finds the stick, ever so slightly forward and kind of slides into her salute. 9.900

Michigan will now have to count a 9.550 from Heiskell, which is big news for MSU.

Utah goes 49.525 on vault to nearly go where Oklahoma went. Oklahoma loses a little ground with its 49.425 on bars, a good rotation but one that didn’t really live up to where the scores were trending with those final three routines.

Neither team will be super thrilled with that third rotation as they both ended up counting a 9.725, but Oklahoma’s 49.350 will expand the lead on Utah’s 49.200. Strong ending to the rotation for Oklahoma, for Utah, no one really nailed their routines, and they had a couple errors.

Bowers – FX – OU – double pike, perfect position – switch, very good – front 2/1 to front tuck, does very well to pull out the landing on the front tuck because it got low – switch 1/2 to wolf full, very nice –

Utah ends up with a 49.400 on beam and a 197.275 total, equaling their first meet result. Some good moments, some raggedies.

Oklahoma goes 49.500 on floor, their second-best rotation of the day, to score their second-best 197.9 of the young season, by far the strongest score of the weekend.
