It’s a big one today—in terms of the profile of the teams competing against each other, the exposure (big-girl ABC!), and also the test of “are you just going to give everyone a 10 for coughing?” Should be fun. And by fun I mean terrifying.
Live scores prospectively have Kiya Johnson in the AA for LSU today after she was subbed out on floor in their first meet.
Rosen in on vault today for UCLA. Campbell and Alipio out on beam after their misses in the first meet, replaced by Andres and Moors.
Using the preseason rankings to show the teams rather than the current week 1 rankings. It’s four of the top five!!!!!
No McClain in the beam lineup for LSU today. But Beard in instead.
Rotation 1
Davis – VT – OU – hits her Y1.5, small step back, leg separation on the block. 9.850
Smith – UB – Utah – a bit low on her van leeuwen with a leg break – nice stick on her pike 1/2 dismount. 9.750
Jeffrey – BB – LSU – nice wolf turn – cat leap to switch side, hit – bhs loso, smooth – standing front tuck, deep landing, pretty large step back – 1.5 dismount, holds onto stick with a little lean. 9.775
Malabuyo – FX – UCLA – double tuck, good stick – back 1.5 to front lay dance out – switch ring to switch 1/2 is excellent – double pike, slide back, out of control landing. 9.750
Scheible – VT – OU – handspring pike 1/2, good height, small hop back. 9.925
Sabado – UB – Utah – blind to jaeger, solid amplitude – DLO, some leg separation in the air, slide back. 9.750
And Beard falls on her loso series in the second spot for LSU – switch to staddle 1/2, hit – side aerial, good extension – cat leap to gainer full, holds the landing. 9.225
Lee – FX – UCLA – double tuck, slide back – front lay to front full, gets formy at the end of the front full, tucking with a step – double pike, just a bit of feet, secure landing
Levasseur – VT – OU – y1.5, lovely in the air, one tenth step forward. And that’s what they took, 9.900
Ballard – BB – LSU – bhs loso, hits – switch to switch 1/2, a bit abbreviated but secure – kickover, solid – 1.5 dismount, step. Solid. 9.775
Oh they are juddging today and I am here for it?3
Zirbes – Ub – utah – Ray, hit – good cast hs on high – pak, legs together – and falls on her dismount, taking it to her knees –
Kind of wish this were happening at Utah so we didn’t have about 8000 empty seats behind beam, but it’s NoT pOdIuM.
Moors – FX – UCLA – front 2/1 to front tuck, lovely, little shy with a step back – loso side pass is perfect – switch to switch 1/2 to wolf full, good – rudi, chest down, shuffle to cover. 9.900
Bowers – VT – OU – didn’t get her block, came off at an angle and under rotated the vault, saved it with a lunge back. 9.725
Bryant – BB – LSU – aerial to bhs, nice extension – switch to straddle 1/4, hit, some hip angle – full turn, good – hits front tuck – rudi dismount is stuck. Excellent. 9.900
Morgan – UB – Utah – maloney into bhardwaj, hit, small leg separations – stalder tuck 1/2 dismount, thought she was going to stick it, step back though
Wells – VT – OU – good height and direction on her Y1.5, medium step forward.
Kiya Johnson – BB – LSU – full turn – bhs loso, wonderful save to avoid LSU counting a fall, but a large arm wave – also wobble after her switch leap so she doesn’t have a dance combination – kickover, front tuck – redoes her switch to switch combination to get a dance series- 2/1 dismount solid. 9.375 has to count.
McCallum -= Ub – Utah – maloney to pak, hit, leg separation on maloney, hits her van leeuwen – FTDT, can’t hold the finish position with a small step back.
Moors score originally came up as 9.700, which seemed low, but then it became 9.900 which seems a little high for thaat last pass
S Harris – UCLA – FX – DLO, step forward but didn’t really need to since she had the landing and her chest was up – great elevation on leap combination – double tuck, short landing, step forward again – 1.5 to 1/2 to stag jump good. 9.825
We missed Faith Torrez on vault but she went 9.900
Finnegan – BB – LSU – bhs loso loso, solid – switch to split jump, a little tight on her split jump today, arm wave correction – aerial, hit – gainer full, stuck. Good one. 9.925
O’Keefe – Ub – Utah – good first hs – maloney to pak, good leg together position – short cast hs on high – double arabian dismount, small hop. 9.875
Reed – FX – UCLA – DLO, some rebound back – split leap full to wolf full, gets it around – front lay to rudi, lovely form, controls her step. Good. 9.900
Did she just call her “BJ Boss?” Is that a thing now?
Bart LOVVVESSS BJ’s pants and we should get him a pair.
Campbell – FX – UCLA – FTDT, chest forward with a full tenth step ahead – split leap full to popa, good elevation – front lay to front full, controls her step forward – double tuck, good height, also controls her step. Nice after the first pass. 9.825
I’m going to say something shocking: I think this meet is being judged really well so far. 9.7s are actually being used to separate the regular from the no-deductions. We’ll see if it holds up.
After 1:
Oklahoma 49.450
UCLA 49.200
Utah 49.050
LSU 48.750
LSU trailing after the Beard fall and the two large breaks from Kiya Johnson having to count, which was the development of the first rotation. Utah was able to drop its fall on bars but had to count two 9.7s. UCLA was able to drop one 9.7 but had to count the other. Oklahoma dropped Bowers’ weird one, everyone else it well but a lot of full tenth steps.
Now time for the “so about Tom Farden” section.
Rotation 2
Lee – VT – UCLA – yfull, nice one, one of her best, good stick and distance. 9.900
Sievers – UB – OU – maloney, small leg break into a pak, good form – 1/2 turn on low, hit well – FTDT, small step back. 9.875
Morgan – BB – Utah – bhs bhs loso, some knee form, secure landing – switch to split, solid – front gainer full dismount off the side, shorter landing with a step back. 9.825
Ballard – FX – LSU – secure DLO landing, chest a bit forward – back 1.5 to front lay, looks like she just does control that back foot – switch ring to switch 1/2, gets low on the switch 1/2 – double pike, nearly stuck it then kind of stepped. 9.825
Anastasi – VT – UCLA – yfull, good distance, lunge back. 9.800
Levasseur – UB – OU – good first hs position – toe on to tkatchev, hit – hits hs – bail, nice toe point – giant full to double tuck, step back. 9.850
M Smith – BB – Utah – candle mount – hit – hitch kick to aerial;, little adjustment before split jump and a check – bhs loso is secure – hit switch leap – round off gainer full, not the highest, good stick. 9.875
Dunne – FX – LSU – front tuck through to double tuck, slide back – switch to switch 1/2 ring – y spin, drops and starts kind of early there – double pike, secure landing, some feet. 9.850
Rosen – VT – UCLA – y1.5, good distance, lands a little stiff but not too much – hop – 9.850
Torrez – UB – OU – toe on to pak, nice – looked a bit shy on final cast hs – DLO, stuck landing. 9.850
Gilstrap – BB – Utah – wolf turn, hit – bhs lay pike, fights to save it with a lean and and arm wave – switch to split ring jump, holds it – gainer full, nice stick. 9.700
KJ Johnson – FX – LSU – excellent FTDT to start – 1.5 to front lay – double tuck, good height, ends up with a step forward though
Campbell – VT – UCLA – yfull – great amplitude, slide back. 9.900
R Smith – UB – OU – hits her Ray to pak, little leg separation on pak – DLO, some piking, hop forward. 9.900
McCallum – BB – Utah – hits candle mount – wolf triple is smooth – side aerial to loso series, wobble, leg up and a lean to the side – cat leap to switch leap, some feet – sissone – gainer tuck full is stuck.
Finnegan – FX – LSU – double arabian to stag, good one – switch ring to split leap full is nice – 2.5 to front tuck, nice – And it’s 9.975.
Harris – VT – UCLA – y1.5 and sticks it, does well to hold onto that landing because she was leaning back a little. 9.950
Davis – UB – OU – higgins to piked jaeger, super high – good hs on high – pak, clean – 1/2 turn, good finish position – hits cast hs on high -higgins to double front 1/2 out, sticks it today. 9.975, so one judge decided to take for the leg separation in dismount and one didn’t we can assume.
Paulson – BB – Utah – side aerial to loso, hit – switch to split, hit with a little adjustment – gainer full, leaning back a little and holds it.
Bryant – FX – LSU – double front, a ltitle short with a step back – switch to switch full – rudi, very strong, under control. 9.900
Reed – VT – UCLA – y1.5 with a massive lunge forward right to the end of the mat. 9.775
Bowers – UB – OU – blind to piked jaeger, hit – nice hs on high – pak. clean – 1/2 turn on low – a bit shy on final cast hs – FTDT, step forward. 9.850
O’Keefe – BB – Utah – switch to split leap, nice – side aerial to loso and falls, not a typical thing to see – means they’ll count the 9.7 for Gilstrap
Kiya Johnson – FX – LSU – FTDT, bounce back – back 1.5 to front lay, one of the few who looks completely correct on that front lay in combination – switch 1/2 to popa, clear finish position – double pike, hit, small movement. 9.875
Definitely some softening of the judging in that rotation but not completing killing me yet. It’s early. We have so many stab wounds that could still be inflicted.
After 2:
Oklahoma 98.900
UCLA 98.600
LSU 98.275
Utah 98.175
Utah also has some trouble on beam to fall back behind LSU after two events. LSU with a big 49.525 on floor, the highest rotation score thus far. Still do feel like Drayton should be in that lineup though.
Rotation 3
KJ Johnson – VT – LSU – yfull, fab, stuck. 9.925
Campbell – UB – UCLA – maloney to bail, small leg breaks – a bit shy on hs on high – blind to double front, cowboy, good stick today. 9.900
Davis – BB – OU – bhs loso, secure – aerial, good – beat to Yang Bo ish,, but also lovely – 2/1 dismount, holds the stick with a small lean. 9.875
M Smith – FX – Utah – front 2/1, bounce out – split leap leap to cat leap and wolf hop, some soft leg positions – rudi to back lay to stretch jump – rudi to stag. 9.900.
Drayton – VT – LSU – high y1.5, good distance, lunge forward with a bit of crossover. 9.825
Updating us on Sara Ulias knee injury in warmups. Burn it down.

Gilstrap – FX – Utah – front lay to great lift into her rudi – back 1.5 to front lay, good lay shape, controls ehr step forward – split leap full to knee, very pretty – switch to switch ring 1/2, hit – front lay to front full. 9.850
Schoenherr – VT – LSU – just a yfull and that seems like a mistake rather than the intent, lots of piking and a large bounce back. 9.700
Lee – UB – UCLA – maloney to pak, leg spearations on both, close on pak but muscles out of it – van leeuwen, fingertips – FLO, chest down, hop, will be a low number. 9.675
Torrez – BB – OU – side aerial to loso is right on – switch to straddle, good – gainer full, a bit of lean on that landing but holds onto the stick. 9.925
Rucker – FX – Utah – FTDT, a bit short and some leg separation, hop forward – switch full, a little short on landing, connects to shushunova – back 1.5 to front lay, keeps step in bounds. 9.850

Harris – Ub – UCLA – good Ray – hits bail, legs together, solid vertical – giant full to DLO, stuck. very good. 9.925
McCallum – FX – FTDT, little bounce back – split leap full to popa, good – front lay to rudi gets a bit ragged in form with a bounce back
Bryant – VT – LSU – a feel like that was even bigger? – bounce back 9.900
R Smith – BB – OU – bhs loso and falls – Ragan and Maile were just like, TODAY IS MY NO – sticks gainer full dismount
Frazier – UB – UCLA – good first hs – maloney to pak, has to improvise a hip circle out of her pak because she was so close – good cover but a major error – DLO, hop forward. 9.750
O’Keefe – FX – Utah – big trouble on double pike, super short landing, two large lunges forward – front lay to front full is also lower than her normal, a little awkward on landing – leaps still lovely – 1.5 to front lay is hit. 9.575
After 3:
Oklahoma 148.400
UCLA 147.850
Utah 147.575
LSU 147.500
Oklahoma extending its lead with a 49.500 on beam even with dropping Smith’s fall. Showing their separation from the other teams with superior dance element execution.
UCLA with three sub-9.8s on bars but hanging on to 2nd because that’s how it has been going. LSU 49.225 on vault, Utah picks up a little ground with a 49.350 on floor.

SO.
FINAL:
Oklahoma 197.900
LSU 197.150
UCLA 197.100
Utah 196.975
Oklahoma said eat my farts to everyone, pretty much as expected. The other three teams had fairly similar competitions to each other, a little ragged, some shaky times, some good moments, fine for January but not fine for March.
This is also how the new quad meet format is supposed to run, and I thought it went well. Got to see pretty much all the routines but didn’t feel like the slog that a one-at-a-time meet does, at least on TV. May have felt like more of a slog in person.
Came out of this one with two more injuries also, Sara Ulias and Danae Fletcher.
Meet back here for the second session?
Kathy bringing out “the gymternet” to start the broadcast.
Rotation 1
Schulte – UB – MSU – maloney, leg break and struggled on catch and has to take an extra swing and hop off – redoes the shap to bail, hits hs on high bar – DLo, leg separation, bounce back. 9.200

Zsarmani – Ub – MSU – lovely pak – maloney to gienger, nice – DLO, bounce back. Good. 9.850

Mayhew – VT – Cal – into the lineup – and she sticks a Y1.5. Just a bit of knees. So that’s a helpful addition. And it’s a 9.950.
Actual TV broadcast starts so Bart is recapping the falls and also Mayhew’s stick for 9.950.
Frazier – VT – Cal – DTY, good height, just a bit of knees, step back. Solid. 9.900
Zultevicz – NC St – split leap full to wolf full, around, just a bit of feet position – finishes double tuck, chest forward with a step ahead.

Kellerman – UB – MSU – blind to jaeger, good toe point – bail, just a bit of hip angle but solid – DLO, stuck
Lauzon – VT – Cal – And she also sticks her y1.5, nailed the landing, and with a bit better leg form than Mayhew who already went 9.950, so we’ll see what they do with it. And it’s 9.975 for Lauzon.
Knight – FX – NC St – punch front 2/1, good height, slide forward – a bit short on landing her front pike in combination with a step back – rusi to loso, secure with a bent leg deduction on the loso

N Smith – UB – MSU – toe on to maloney, good leg position, connects to pak – 1/2 turn on low, a bit of arch and correction there – finishes with a good stuck DLO. 9.925

After 1:
Cal 49.525
Michigan State 49.325
BYU 49.075
NC State 49.000
So kind of a big number for Cal on vault. Sticking two Y1.5s will help. Michigan State is able to come back from the fall from Schulte and go 49.325, and both NC State and BYU get up to 49s in their first rotation.
Kind of a messy start for several of the teams but they all survived it. Feels like the judges took their happy pills in between the afternoon session and the evening.
Rotation 2
Adler – VT – NC St – good height on her yfull, hop centrally – a bit of direction
Li – UB – Cal – blind to jaeger, super high – good hs on high – pak, legs together well – giant full to double tuck, holds onto the landing with an arm circle swim and a lean. 9.825

Zultevicz – VT – NC St – chest forward on yfull, step forward.
Tucker – BB – MSU – aerial to bhs, hit – beat to split jump 3/4, large break, big lean forward and leg up – side aerial, nice – full turn – bhs gainer full, some legs apart but solid

Frazier – UB – Cal – maloney to pak, leg separation on the pak – 1/2 turn on low, a little crooked from this angle – DLO, shows strong control there. 9.925
Negrete – VT – NC St – good yfull – has the distance and direction, controls the landing. 9.900
49.175 vault for NC State.
Stephen – BB – MSU – aerial to 2 feet is secure – full turn, hit – bhs loso, wobble, turns to the side with a bend but saves it – beat to split jump 1/2, some back leg – 2/1 is excellent, stuck. 9.775

After 2:
Cal 99.025
NC State 98.175
BYU 98.150
MSU 98.125
Michigan State drops to last there after two large breaks on beam which meant they had to count a 9.600. A tentative rotation overall. Cal goes 49.5 again to stay over 198 pace through the first two events.
49.175 on vault for NC State ties their season high from last year there.

Beaufait – FX – MSU – punch front 2/1, good height, controls her step – switch ring to switch 1/2, hit – nice rudi to finish. 9.900
Li – BB – Cal – aerial, keeps moving into loso, some leaning and arm wave to fight for it, a bit of a deduction – swtich to split to beat, again small adjustments through the elements – gainer tuck full dismount, small step – tight and fighting it but minimized the problems. 9.825
Dudley – VT – BYU – yfull, good direction, pretty big rebound back
Childs – UB – NC St – hits her jaeger to overshoot – double tuck dismount, solid landing

Nyah Smith – FX – MSU – FTDT, gets it around, chest down on landing – switch to straddle 1/4 to popa – front tuck through to double tuck, excellent
Earl – VT – BYU – y1/2 – bound forward
Cesario – BB – Cal – bhs loso, large wobble, turn to the side and an arm wave – switch to switch 1/2, a little under, holds it securely – 1.5 dismount, step forward. 9.725 that will have to count.
Hall – UB – NC St – maloney to bail, hit, some leg break – giant full to double tuck, absorbs the landing and holds onto it
Excellent save by Tucker for MSU to keep that loso in bounds on floor, just don’t put your foot down, that simple. Nice front 2/1 final pass.
Eaquinto – VT – BYU – hits yfull, but another fairly lage bounce back
Frazier – BB – Cal – full turn, smooth – aerial to loso series, good connection, small lean – split jump to splint ring jump, excellent front leg positions – 1.5 dismount, stuck. Cal needed that one.
Annnnnnnnnd we have a beam 10.000. I had a check landing that loso.
Harper – UB – NC St – super high gienger but a close catch – bail, a little loose in arms – DLO, lunge forward –
harkness – FX – MSU – FTDT, lands a little deep with a slide back – switch to split leap full to wolf full, good completion – doubel tuck, lands chest down but holds onto the landing

Lauzon – BB – Cal – hits wolf turn – bhs bhs loso, secure – switch to split, shows good split positions – 2/1 dismount, super high, stuck.
Well now. I think that was stronger than Frazier’s routine. 9.925. Sure whatever.

Schulte – FX – MSU – big FTDT, bounce back though, fairly out control – switch 1/2 to popa to straddle jump, good extension – front tuck to double tuck, excellent –
After 3:
Cal 148.325
MSU 147.575
BYU 147.175
NC State 146.925
MSU gains a little ground on Cal there after a 49.450 on floor. Cal chose chaos in that beam rotation with a wide variety of performances, but big ones from Frazier and Lauzon bring it up to 49.300, which is a big improvement from last week.
Cal would need 49.575 on floor to match Oklahoma’s total, which would seem a little much but we’ll see. Good shot to move up to 2nd in the rankings with a normal floor hit though.
Rotation 4
Nyah Smith – VT – MSU – good direction on yfull, bounce back. 9.775
Mason – UB – BYU – a bit shy on first hs – toe on to maloney to pak, leg separation – 1/2 turn on low – a bit tight on a couple hs – good DLO, bounce
Adler – BB – NC St – bhs loso, secure – full turn, smooth – swithc to straddle 1/4, good – side aerial, chest down, holds it – cat leap to switch side, lean – gainer full, holds onto landing despite being a little forward. 9.725
Kane – FX – Cal – front full to rudi, loses leg form toward the end, bounce back – back 1.5 to front lay, nice position but kind of a strange hesitation before split jump. 9.875
Tucker – VT – MSU – Y1.5, hits it, lands a little deep with a step forward. 9.825
Alvarado The Younger – UB – BYU – toe on to maloney, leg separation, bail, small leg break – step up on low bar, balance check and has to improvise a toe circle, DLO, hop
Jennings – BB – NC St – bhs bhs loso, solid – switch, pauses before tuck jump 3/4, i’d say broke the connection there – side aerial, solid – gainer full, small hop forward. 9.750
Williams – FX – Cal – front lay to rudi, good form, slide back of front foot – – wolf double, pulls it around – switch 1/2 to split jump, lovely – back 1.5 to layout, a little low, slightly soft in the layout. 9.850
Stephen – VT – MSU – Y1.5, a lot of potential in that, great form, but a large lunge forward. 9.775
Eaquinto – UB – BYU – maloney to pak, good legs together work on that combination – some elbows in giants, DLO, a little low, step forward. 9.775
Zultevicz – BB – NC St – bhs loso, some knee softness, check – switch to split, low back leg – side aerial, keeps arms moving into sissone – deep in dismount with a step back
Cesario – FX – Cal – back 1.5 to front full, quick dance out – switch 1/2 to wolf jump full, pulls it around – double tuck, bounce back. 9.850
Zsarmani – VT – MSU – under on her y1.5 with a couple big lunges back to avoid the fall. 9.575
Ortega – BB – NC St – L turn, starts a little under horizontal – bhs onodi, and a big step forward but keeps it on the beam – switch to split, tentative on switch – 9.650
Hunter – UB – BYU – tkatchev, good flight – clear hip to bail, collapses in her position onto the bars but doesn’t come off
Mayhew – FX – Cal – punch front 2/1, off on attempted punch to front tuck and couldn’t possibly, sits it down –
Kellerman – VT – MSU – handspring pike 1/2, nearly finds the stick again, small movement. 9.925
Shepard – BB – NC St – L turn, hit – lovely leap combo switch into straddle 1/4 – bhs loso, right on – side aerial – side aerial to 1.5, hop forward, good work.
Alvarado The Older – UB – BYU – a bit rushed on that toe on – hits maloney to pak well – DLO 1/1, only a little rebound
Lauzon – FX – Cal – front 2/1 to front tuck, bit of a slide forward – switch ring to switch 1/2, well done – back 1.5 to front full, controls her step out, thought she was going to be under but pulled it out.
And it’s another 9.975 for Lauzon as she goes 39.750 in the AA. But Frazier could beat it
Nikki Smith – VT – MSU – y1.5, very nice, small hop. 9.850
Negrete – BB – NC St – full turn, good – aerial to bhs, hit – cat leap to switch 1/2, a little tight but fine, connects to beam jump – split jump, hit – 2/1 dismount, small hop
Bramblett – UB – BYU – Ray to overshoot, good – DLO, lovely height and position, small hop. 9.825
Frazier – FX – Cal – DLO, good control – switch ring to switch 1/2 to split 1/2, gorgeous – split ring jump – front tuck to doubel tuck, squeezes to try to avoid front foot movement. Good one. Going to be a huge team total as they drop the fall. 9.950
FINAL:
Cal 197.825
Michigan State 196.725
BYU 196.100
NC State 195.675
Big day for Cal as they set a program vault record and MJ Frazier sets the team AA record at 39.775 with a 10 on beam. Lauzon now tied for 2nd with Frazier in the all-time AA. That total will move them up to 2nd in the in-progress rankings.
Wish we had seen Cal up against the afternoon session teams that the same time. I think they probably would have ranked the same (behind Oklahoma, ahead of UCLA, LSU, Utah) but what would the same-time difference in scores have been?
Michigan State improves on the first meet but will also feel like it was still a ragged performance, especially on vault and beam, and will know that anything close to a normal hit should expect to go into the 197s. BYu goes over 196, improving a couple tenths on last week, and NC State improves on last week’s score by almost a point and a half.
And now Williams’ floor score just went up from 9.850 to 9.900, so Cal is on 197.875, a quarter tenth shy of Oklahoma’s afternoon score.
