In the rankings department today, UCLA now knows it will take just 197.375 today to pass Michigan in the rankings—also a 197.925 to pass Alabama, though we’ll see if things get into that vicinity as we go.

Michigan State is also in the same fight and in action right now, knowing that 197.550 puts them ahead of Michigan. With a 49.450 on vault in the first rotation, MSU is on pace to beat that mark.

No Selena Harris in lineups today for UCLA, which will pose, um, a challenge.

MSU 49.475 on bars with a 9.950 for Harkness, so still on pace for a high 197.

Jim tells us Harris is out today just for resting. I guess UCLA is playing the long game rather than the “we need a road score otherwise our regional draw is going to be a butthead” game.

Rotation 1

Mangahas – VT – Arizona St – yfull, good open, little rebound in place, some direction. 9.850

Campbell – UB – UCLA – good first hs – maloney to bail, very small leg separations – hits cast hs on high – blind to double front, cowboy, full tenth hop back. 9.775

Gregoire – VT – Arizona St – y1.5, hits, medium step forward and some soft knee, good. 9.800

Irvine – UB – UCLA – blind to piked jaeger to overshoot, hit – a bit shy on final cast hs – FTDT, stuck. Big improvement. And gets 9.900

Reeves – VT – Arizona St – y tucked 1.5, another medium hop forward, some foot form and direction. 9.775

Lee – UB – UCLA – some back position in first cast hs – maloney to pak, hit maloney, leg break in pak – toe on to van leeuwen, hit – way way short on final cast hs – DLO, some piking throughout, holds onto landing with lean forward. 9.775 very forgiving there. How was that the same as Campbell?

Scharf – VT – Arizona St – yfull, nice stick there, solid open and direction, just a little chest position. 9.850

Rosen – UB – UCLA – maloney to pak, good form – hits 1/2 turn on low – just a bit tight on final hs – DLO, a taddd shy with a hop forward. 9.850

Theodorou – VT – Arizona St – ro 1/2 on tuck 1/2, lands short, chest down, with a step forward. 9.700

Frazier – UB – UCLA – maloney to pak, nice – good finish position on 1/2 turn on low – tighter final hs – DLO, good position in the air but also comes in a little short with a hop forward. 9.850

A Smith – VT – Arizoan St – y1.5, nearly finds the stick, little step forward and some direction. Nice. 9.875

Esparza – UB – UCLA – hits first hs, hand adjustment – maloney to pak is hit – van leeuwen, legs together solidly – DLO, legs apart, bounce back and then can’t hold on after the bounce with another step back. 9.725, the multiple steps on landing really got her there.

So it’s 49.150 on vault for Arizona State. They’ve been 49.3+ 3 times this season so won’t be over the moon about 49.150, but a mostly solid showing there. Normal hit 1.5s with steps.

UCLA matches with 49.150 on bars, their second-lowest bars score of the season, but through the apparatus? Irvine really the hero of the day on bars. If she hadn’t gotten through that, this meet would be falling out of their hands. Will still need to up the pace to get a useful road number.

Rotation 2

Anastasi – VT – UCLA – yfull, good landing, solid direction and open, not the most distance/amplitude, but nailed the landing. 9.850, fair and you know that would have been like 9.900/9.925 at home

Reeves – UB – Arizona St – blind to jaeger to overshoot, solid height -shorter final cast hs – DLO, legs apart, step back. 9.800

Irvine – VT – UCLA – ro full on back pike, hit, medium bounce back – pretty solid overall. 9.850

Barbanente – UB – Arizona St – blind to piked jaeger,a little low but hit, connects to solid overshoot – some elbows in giants – DLO, bounce back. 9.750

Lee – VT – UCLA – yfull, nice position throughout, small bounce back, improves on the layout position and dynamics from Anastasi so can still go up. 9.875

Scharf – UB – Arizona St – maloney, leg separation, into pak, solid – a bit past on 1/2 turn on low – short cast hs on high – giant full to double tuck, step back. 9.725

Rosen – VT – UCLA – y1.5, pretty solid, hop to the side and some knee position throughout. 9.900

Mangahas – UB – Arizona St – blind to piked jaeger, solid height, into overshoot, hit, closer to the bar there – FTDT, some feet, small hop back. 9.825

Campbell – VT – UCLA – yfull, small hop back, and she’s been having some direction issues lately and is somewhat off line today again. 9.875

Michigan State goes 49.600 on beam to get over 198 pace with floor still to come.

White – UB – Arizona st – hits van leeuwen, a bit shy on hs – giant 1/2 – bail – toe on toe up to high bar – good feet positions throughout, lovely DLO in the air. 9.875

Reed – VT – UCLA – another big lunge forward on her y1.5. 9.750

Clark – UB – Arizona St – short first hs – blind to jaeger, good feet, some elbows on catch – pak, small leg break – 1/2 turn on low bar, solid finish position – DLO, good form, stuck. 9.900

UCLA gets up closer to the pace they need with that 49.350 vault score, establishing a lead on Arizona State’s 49.150 on bars. Looks like a lot of landing scoring on bars today, so the scores didn’t come until those last couple.

After 2
UCLA 98.500
Arizona State 98.300

Both teams going to need to have a FLOOR today to get these scores up into the realm of useful, but both should still be able to turn this into a counting number.

Rotation 3

Lee – BB – Arizona St – split leap, through to full turn – bhs bhs loso, secure – beat to sheep jump, good amplitude on beat jump, slight hip angle on sheep but solid – 1.5 dismount, a little low, hop. Nice. 9.825

Lee – FX – UCLA – double tuck, good position, controls step back – front lay to front full, a little under with a step to the side – switch ring to switch 1/2 is nice – double pike, lower chest position, hit. 9.850

Reeves – BB – Arizona St – bhs bhs loso, solid – switch, really struggles, back leg very low and a wobble before split jump, also back leg low – aerial, hit – 1.5 tuck dismounts, step. 9.750

Andres – FX – UCLA – back 2.5 to front tuck, goes out horizontally on front tuck with a step – double tuck, entire shot of teammate’s back so no idea on that one – switch side, overturns some into popa, good split positions – switch. 9.750

Mangahas – BB – Arizona St – full turn, good – aerial, wobble, leg up, no combination – redoes the aerial and connects to bhs smoothly this time – switch, little pause before switch 1/2, and falls – actually went for that switch 1/2 in terms of real amplitude and position and was rewarded with a fall – kickover is solid – gainer pike, stuck. 9.050

Lashbrooke – FX – UCLA – double tuck, bounce back – back 1.5, mistimes and struggles on the front lay attempt, has to tuck it and barely makes it to her feet but does – split full is under, to popa, higher position, a little out of control on landing – double pike, can’t get it and falls. 8.700

Clark – BB – Arizona St – full turn – bhs bhs loso, hit, little waver on landing, some leg position – split jump to stag ring, check – aerial, good front leg position and solid landing – gainer front full, stuck. 9.850

Schulte finishes MSU’s meet with a 9.975 on floor to take them to a season high 198.150. That puts them ahead of Michigan and just behind Alabama.

Rosen – FX – UCLA – DLO, under control, a bit of chest position on landing – double pike, same, clear and comfortable landings – switch ring to switch 1/2 – back 1.5 to lay to front tuck, hit. 9.900

Scharf – BB – Arizona St – wolf double, smooth – bhs loso, holds on solidly to avoid a check – side somi, secure – swtich, wobble, leg up, no combo – redoes switch to split jump, lower back leg on split jump – 1.5 dismount, step back. 9.675

Moors – FX – UCLA – front 2/1 to front tuck, holds the landing for quite a while before that little slidy-backy present so probably won’t get dinged for short – loso from side – switch to switch 1/2 to wolf full, excellent – rudi, little adjustment to the side. 9.925

White – BB – Arizona St – bhs loso, nice – full turn – aerial to beat, really good extended position in aerial – split jump to stag ring, secure – 1.5 dismount, good form, holds stick with a little lean. Excellent. 9.925

Reed – FX – UCLA – DLO, good control, chest a bit down – split leap full to wolf full, some arm to control the wolf full but some of her best completion this season on those leaps – front lay to rudi, maybe just controls the front foot? And 9.950 to drastically help UCLA’s total.

After 3
UCLA 147.875
Arizona State 147.325

So Arizona State needs at minimum 49.325 on floor to make this a counting meet score, while UCLA would need 49.250 on beam to do the same. Though to have a chance to move ahead of anyone in the rankings, UCLA would need 49.5 on beam.

Jim making fun of Amanda’s pageboy haircut as her goodbye to Pac-12 broadcasting makes me forget anything that has ever happened before. Oh you two. The Big 12 broadcasts next year should pick up Amanda.

Rotation 4

Lee – BB – UCLA – aerial to split jump, nice – bhs loso, high, keeps tight to avoid a check – switch to straddle jump, well done – gainer full good stick. 9.875

Lee – FX – Arizona St – front 2/1, a little under, steps it around, under control on the step – back 1.5 to front lay, under control, a little low on the layout – switch ring to switch 1/2 – rudi, a little adjustment on landing, some knee position. 9.775

Rosen – BB – UCLA – switch to split, little pause before stag ring, good elements – aerial, secure – bhs loso, good foot position, solid landing – full turn – 1.5 dismount, good distance, hop. 9.800

Gregoire – FX – Arizona St – wolf hop full, a bit under 180 on the extended leg – FTDT, small hop to the side – switch side, overturns by a 1/4, into straddle 3/4 – rudi to loso goes farrr, keeps it in but hops it to the side to do so. 9.875 seems high for the leaps

Andres – BB – UCLA – beat to switch 1/2 to beat, controls it – kickover, smoothly connected into korbut – full turn – 2/1, stuck. Nice. 9.900

K Smith – FX – Arizona St – double pike, chest down landing with a lunge forward – front full to front lay, under control – split leap full to popa – double tuck, step forward. 9.850

Campbell – BB – UCLA – wolf single, hit – bhs loso, short but saves it, leg up wobble but doesn’t come off – split leap, arm correction into switch 1/2, another check before beat jump, so we’ll see about combo credit – split to straddle 1/4, a little under – gainer full, holds stick with lean forward. 9.675, so seems like she got credit for everything

White – FX – Arizona St – front 2/1, controls step – back 1.5 to front full is low, just pulls it around but short with a big lunge to the side – switch ring to switch 1/2 is nice – 9.825

Esparza – BB – UCLA – full turn, hit – aerial, leans and tries to connect it to bhs and nearly the most amazing save but ends up coming off – resumes with a hit switch 1/2 – split leap to switch to split to beat, pretty switch and split in the middle there, clear 180s -holds onto gainer full landing. 9.200

Mangahas – FX – Arizona St – FTDT, under control, chest down and some feet – front tuck to double tuck, can’t control the landing with two lunges back and a possible OOB – switch 1/2 to wolf full to wolf full, gets a little low on the final wolf full. 9.675

McNamara – BB – UCLA – hi would you like to come in for the first time, don’t worry you just have to save the entire meet – full turn, hit – side aerial to bhs, nearly saved it with a step back but ends up falling – split leap to switch to straddle 1/4, nice 180s on switch and straddle there – tuck 1.5 dismount, stuck. 9.175

Scharf – FX – Arizona St – front through to double tuck – front full to front tuck, also solid, just some knee position here and there – switch 1/2 to wolf full – double pike, little rebound. 9.925

FINAL:
Arizona State 196.575
UCLA 196.325

Arizona State will enjoy the winning of it all, but this will not be a counting score for either team. UCLA is now guaranteed to count 197.425 and 197.175 road scores for their NQS.
