Opening the season with a heads up that this fun game called neuropathy after chemotherapy has currently left me with no feeling in my fingers. I can still type like a 6-year-old, but it means that live blogs might be less skill comprehensive for the time being, especially on a quick event like bars. We’ll see how it goes.
No live streams is a tomorrow problem as our three opening meets today all do have broadcasts. Missouri’s quad meet got the season started with Missouri vaulting a 48.975, led by a 9.850 y1.5 from Moore but also counting big bounces for sub-9.8 from Celestine and Tanskanen. The scoring was…realistic? No, Spencer, don’t do this, don’t make sweeping hopeful assumptions based on one rotation at the beginning of the season.
For LSU/Iowa State, preliminary lineups tell us KJ Johnson is alive and well and vaulting after being mysteriously absent from competition at Gym 101. Finnegan and Chio are in the AA and Bryant is, as reported, out of today’s meet.
Depth remains the crowing glory for LSU because it is remarkable that half the roster can have one foot in the grave and they’re still putting out lineups of this quality.
Rotation 1
kj johnson – vt – yfull, great amplitude, little hop back, where she left off. 9.825
wills – isu – ub – arches a handstand after pak and comes off the bar – clean dlo in the air, short, hop forward. 8.850
brock – vt – lsu – in for zeiss – clean full, not her 1.5, hop back. 9.825
loyim – ub – isu – high piked jaeger but falls – iowa state counting an early fall – resumes with a straddled pak – dlo is excellent. 8.800
finnegan – vt – lsu – y1.5 today, strong stick, just some knee form at the end, slight direction. 9.950
bergstrom – ub – isu – hits a high jaeger, some feet – short on all hs positions – giant full to dbl tuck with step back. 9.625
lincoln – vt – lsu – y1.5 – solid dynamics, bound forward, some legs. 9.825
bochow – ub – isu – pretty jaeger – short handstands – dlo, hop forward, good one. 9.775
drayton – vt – lsu – y1.5, solid, near stuck landing, little shuffle, slight feet and direction. 9.925
thomas – ub – isu – hit jaeger, good feet, pak is close but muscles out of it ok – dlo, little hop and extra step. 9.700
chio – vt – lsu – y1.5 – nearly sticks, little hop forward, a little more form and direction than the 9.9s. 9.825
sgarbossa – ub -isu =-clean on her pak, best hs of the bunch, good stick on dlo. 9.800
LSU gives us 49.350 on vault. Jay will tell us he’s disappointed in the landings because they were tight. Fine for the first meet, some strong landings already from a couple.
After 1: LSU 49.350, Iowa State 47.750
DD is shaking her head and downing the popcorn. Retirement seems nice.
Rotation 2
Wills – isu -vt – yfull, shorter with hop forward, pike in the air. 9.675
zeiss – lsu – ub – maloney to pak with legs togtether – ftdt, a little deep with small step forward. but solid.
wilke – isu – vt – yfull is hit, chest a little higher up – pike and a bounce back. 9.700
judges meeting on zeiss, ends up on 9.800.
cowan – ub -lsu – small arch on first hs – hits tkatchev to overshoot – dlo, bounce back. 9.850
bergstrom – vt – isu – yfull, good stick and direction, some knees and feet9.850
jeffrey -ub – lsu – maloney to bail, legs together – high ftdt, squats in landing with hop forward. 9.825
adams – vt – isu – yfull, solid in the air, pretty large bounce back 9.850
chio – ub – lsu – bit of legs in maloney – khorkina and hit – ftdt, stuck. 9.900
hardin – isu – vaults ro 1/2 on front tuck with lunge, did not intend the tuck
finnegan – ub – deltchev, good – bail hits vertical – ftdt, step back. 9.900 with a one tenth step.
looks like they gave hardin a 10 start? Which is wrong? RO 1/2 on front tuck starts at 9.950.
mcclain – ub – lsu – church to pak is strong, good hs on high, ftdt, deep with a bound forward. 9.800
49.275 on bars for lsu thanks to landings. Majority of the lineup had more than a tenth on dismount. Iowa State will take that 5-person 48.825 on vault.
After 2: LSU 98.625, Iowa State 96.575
Rotation 3
ballard -bb – lsu – bhs loso and falls to start – comfortable kickover – sticks 2/1 dismount. 9.250
If this were old-time ucla, val would tell us she actually wanted ballard to fall to challenge the rest of the team.
manternach – fx – isu – sirens to start, it’s an emergency for iowa state – double tuck lunge back looks like just stayed in – front full to lay, a little low but solid landing. 9.675. 9.550/9.800 split.
drayton – bb – hits aerial, very small adjustment on loso – a bit tentative on switch switch – odd 2/1, chest well down with step forward. 9.675 will count.
bergstrom – fx – isu – front lay to rudi is a struggle, chest well down and a lunge forward – back 1.5 to lay is clean . 9.600
chio – bb – lsu – bhs mount is clean and solid – loso series solid – good switch to split – aerial to split, comfortable – 1.5, holds with a lean forward. she’s having a star-maker debut. 9.925
guinee – fx – isu – front 2/1 is hit, crossover step and some leg position – not bad finish position on leaps – front lay to front full, solid. 9.800
dunne – bb – lsu – lovely bhs loso – aerial, some knee, slight adjustment – switch to split to split ring – gainer pike, little lean. 9.825
wilke – fx – isu – nice landing on 1.5 to front full – she’s been given an “it’s ok you can spend most of it on the ground” routine – double pike, good height, small rebound. 9.875.
mcclain – bb – lsu – switch to switch 1/2 – aerial to bhs, smooth – side aerial, holds it with arms quickly down – gainer full slide back. 9.825
adams – fx – isu – front 2/1, bit of a big lunge – high front lay to rudi, good rise. 9.850
ok but we’re all agreed that every routine from every team being 2-pass is a problem right?
crowd boos the 9.825 from mcclain. why isn’t everything tennnnnnnn?
finnegan – bb -lsu – bhs loso loso is secure – good switch to split – aerial, solid – gainer full, stuck. good, comfortable. 9.925
49,175 beam for LSU. Shaky at the beginning but came back with some solid ones. Iowa State goes 48.800 on floor with some big numbers at the end that LSU will be particularly happy about heading there.
After 3: LSU 147.800, Iowa State 145.375
Rotation 4
loyim – bb – isu – switch switch, 2nd switch is very short – bhs loso, lean to the side, keeps it on – gainer full, hop back. 9.575
ballard – fx – lsu – dlo with solid control – back 1.5 to front lay, good – some short positions in leaps – double pike, chest a little forward, holds on. Breaks floor while pounding fist. 9.850
o’brochta -bb – isu – bhs loso loso is secure – hits side leaps – 1.5 big lunge. 9.700
brock – fx – lsu – open ftdt, gets it around but chest down and step – back 1.5 to very clean front lay – good straddles. 9.875 is very high for that first landing, shouldn’t be higher than ballard.
adams – bb – isu – hits series, aerial with a check – holds onto gainer full. 9.775
dunne – fx – lsu – front tuck to double tuck, slide back – double pike, hit – switch to switch ring 1/2 – she has great flexibility but i’m not sold on these ring elements yet. 9.875
wilke- bb – isu – leans through a kickover to back tuck, pause in between and a chest down wobble on landing – 1.5, bound
drayton – fx – lsu – dlo, high, little bounce – solid switch ring position for her – front tuck to double tuck, short with lunge forward. 9.875.
loose floor scoring to make you feel at home again in ncaa.
judges conference on wilke, probably over the series credit. 9.725 so they gave it.
thomas – bb – isu – kickover, small hesitation to bhs – holds onto 1.5 dismount with lean. 9.800
chio – fx – lsu – open ftdt, mostly controls the step, little bit of chest position but not nearly as much as brock – high 2.5 to front tuck finnegan stylie 9.925
bergstrom – bb – isu – cat leap to kickover bhs, solid – switch to switch, adjustment dancing out – front tuck full is stuck. 9.750
finnegan – fx – lsu – double arabian to stag is secure – switch ring to split full, basically aqll the way around – back 2.5 to front tuck, controls step-dance.
FINAL: LSU 197.300, Iowa State 194.100
Not going to be a counter for LSU when we get down to it but no problems evident from the first meet other than get bryant back.
