24 become 16 today as we wrap up the semifinals and set the regional finals lineups for the weekend.

And your assignment is to bring some excitement, some close meets, some down-to-the-last-score business. None of this advancing by more than a point garbage. We’re over that.

I thought I said we were done with teams winning by more than a point. Cal will be pleased about beating Alabama looking forward to Sunday, but will be kind of concerned about the way that last floor rotation was scored, as Alabama also looks like they’ll have Olympic order on Sunday.

Turner – BB – Georgia – full turn, good – bhs loso loso is secure – switch to split, comfortable – 1.5 dismount, good stick. 9.900

Kelly – UB – Missouri – hits church, also a bit close but solid connection into overshoot, sticks double tuck. 9.925

Gregoire – VT – ASU – y1.5, solid position in the air, lunge forward. 9.800

Smith – BB – Georgia – aerial, good extension but a lean correction foot adjustment shoulder drop into back tuck, that’s a broken connection for me – switch to split to beat, lovely – kickover very solid – gainer full, holds stick. Watching the replay, she’s losing connection there for the foot movement between the two acro elements.

Martin finishes up on floor with bounce back on double tuck. 9.825

Mangahas – VT – ASU – tries to show the open position on her yfull, ends up chest forward with a step. 9.700

Celestine – UB – Missouri – toe on to maloney to pak, lower amplitude on pak – toe on to van leeuwen, legs togeter – solid hs on high – stadler pike 1/2 dismount, step back. 9.825

Strom – FX – Arizona – punch rudi to loso, little slide back but solid height – switch to switch ring, good lift there as well – back 1.5 to front full, pulls it around, a bit low. 9/900

John reports 9.500 to 9.850 split on beam for Smith. John doesn’t know where 9.5 would come from, but if you say it’s a broken connection she loses 0.2 for no acro series plus the lost bonus tenths, so 9.5 would still be high for that.

Titarsolej – UB – Missouri – maloney to pak, nice, legs together – solid hs on high – giant full to double tuck, shuffle back. Would have been a 10 with a stick given how high these scores have been. 9.925

And it’s 9.500 for Smith with three 9.6 SVs.

Eaker – BB – Georgia – the switch split mount strikes again and a fall for Eaker – it’s all falling apart for Georgia – side aerial to loso is solid – switch to split leap, lovely – low gainer full, finds the stick. 9.300 that will need to count.

Mueller finishes floor with secure double tuck, chest down.

Scott – BB – Georgia – full turn, check – fhs to bhs loso, hit well – aerial to split to bhs, lovely combination – switch to split, good – fhs front full, stuck, good finish. 9.900

Nice front tuck through to double pike from Jaye Mack.

After 3: Missouri 148.075, Arizona 147.275, Arizona State 146.925, Georgia 146.775

Wildly, Georgia remains in this finishing on floor if the scores go big, but if Arizona does an averagey-normaly vault, or Arizona State a pretty solid bars, they can shut the door on that.

Rotation 4

Larusso – VT – Arizona – yfull, solid, bounce back, doesn’t show finish position. 9.750

Lee – UB – ASU – blind, small leg break into piked jaeger to overshoot, good releases – muscles up a handstand – two lunges back on double tuck dismount. 9.700

Mueller – VT – Arizona – yfull, solid, little rebound in place and some leg separation in the air. 9.775

Gregoire – UB – ASU – giant 1/2 to giengerl caught, legs together – short hs on high – bail, a bit quick moving out of that with loose back – short hs on high – DLO, bounce back. 9.725

Celestine – BB – Missouri – wolf turn, hit – bhs, no connection out of it – redoes the bhs and moves into side aerial, little lean – front tuck holds it – finishes solid gainer full

Fitzgerald – FX – Georgia – rudi to loso is hit – front tuck through to double tuck, under control, chest down. 9.875

Martin VT – yfull – better lift on her yfull, chest forward with a lean to the side. 9.775

Smith – UB – ASU – blind to jaeger, good feet positions – bail, legs together, some hip angle – solid hs on high – DLO, little shuffle. 9.850

Jackson – BB – Missouri – aerial to bhs, smooth – clean leap combination – just a step back on gainer pike

Snyder – FX – Georgia – rudi to back lay to double stag, hit – switch 1/2 to wolf full wolf full – double pike, secure landing. And it’s a 9.925. It begins.

Strom – VT – Arizona – yfull, solid amplitude, bounce back. 9.750. It’s falling away from Arizona with these 9.7s.

Mangahas – UB – Arizona St – blind to piked jaeger to overshoot, good combination – hits hs on high – FTDT, step back. 9.850

Wahl – FX – Georgia – FTDT, huge bounce back, just keeps it in bounds – 1.5 turn – split leap full to wolf full, gets it around – front tuck trough to double tuck, under control, some leg separation. 9.800

Fears – VT – Arizona – yfull, clean in the air, slide back. 9.850

White – UB – ASU – van leeuwen, nice – giant 1/2 to bail, legs together, bit of angle – hits hs on high – DLO, bounce back. 9.850

Meanwhile Missouri cruising through beam.

Aquino – FX – Georgia – front through to double tuck, little bounce back – double pike, chest forward with a step forward, could be critical. 9.875 is high.

Janicke – VT – Arizona – yfull, solid distance, some pike, bounce back – 9.825

Arizona is done on 196.250.

Clark – UB – ASU – blimnd to jaeger, hit – pak, leg separation – 1/2 turn on low, a little past? – hits hs on high – DLO, two small steps back. 9.850

Hu anchoring beam for Missouri, aerial to aerial is smooth – split to split 3/4 is perfect – gainer pike, lovely stick

Amnd we have a 10 for Hu.

Smith – FX – Georgia – she’d need a 10 to tie Arizona – front 2/1, under control, just a little under flipped on landing but shows control – back 1.5 to layout, solid – switch side to wolf full, around – rudi to straddle jump, good control. Should be a very high score, not a 10 though.

It’s 9.925 for Smith, Georgia will come up .075 short.

Oooooh wow. Now this is the kind of drama I was talking about. Thank you regionals. Arizona is living the dream here because it was not an awesome meet but they got the benefit of Georgia’s beam meltdown.

A wild miss from Laster on floor to finish it out is fitting for this semifinal. Glad she looks uninjured because her legs also both fell off during that tumbling pass.

Georgia has a case here, between the score for Derr’s bars error and the denial of Lily Smith’s series (a decision I think was correct, but we’ve certainly seen it given) but ultimately, I don’t think a Georgia beam rotation with that many errors should ever be advancing out of the semifinal, when Arizona and Arizona State had iffy meets but did not count falls.

The lineup absences hurt Georgia, although their replacements did not end up getting the problem scores.

FINAL: Missouri 197.650, Arizona 196.250, Georgia 196.175, Arizona State 196.050

And we’re back. I hope you used the break to watch Lily Smith’s acro series 15 times in a row.

Now we’re back to Alabama. Use the last semifinal as a role model please. We had a close finish and controversial SV credit decisions, everything I could hope for.

After 1: Florida 49.575, Clemson 49.325, Oregon State 48.975, NC State 48.850

Oregon State would have expected vault to be their low score, so they won’t be panicking yet, but that’s not a small deficit compared to Clemson. If Clemson extends the lead in rotation 2, then we’ll need to talk. I know it’s tired to talk about where this team would be without Jade, but where would this team be without Jade.

Alvarado-Reid – CMU – good secure loso series – switch to switch 1/2 to beat, under control, short on switch 1/2 position – beat to side aerial, solid – full turn – gainer pike, step back

After 2: Florida 99.075, Clemson 98.400, Oregon State 98.150, NC State 98.050

Clemson retains the 2nd spot but loses a little bit of ground to Oregon State, which they couldn’t really afford here. They and NC State would need Oregon State not to hit to potential on beam next.

News of the first rotation is a bit of a surprise in Nebraska being ahead of Auburn. Auburn’s edge is in the final two rotations though, somewhat like Oregon State a bit ago.

Moneymaker – BB – UC Davis – kickover teeters into bhs, has a Lily Smith moment in combo, didn’t have quite the same foot movement though, maybe a little bit onto the ball – full turn to beat – split to stag ring, shows ring shape well, secure – gainer full, good stick.

Expected judges conference. No combo credit for Moneymaker, so we’ve got some consistency here.
