THE 2020 STORY
The 2020 season doesn’t count as a championship because there wasn’t one, but as the team holding the #1 ranking when everything shut down, Oklahoma gets to claim the closest thing the 2020 season had to a title. At least, 2020 can count as the fourth season out of the last five in which Oklahoma has been the #1 team.

THE 2020 STORY
Cal will be ultimately quite comfortable with a 2020 final ranking that tied for the 3rd-best result in program history. The team managed to gain tenths even after the departure of the Toni-Ann Williams class and, after a slow start in those first couple meets, went on to rack up five 197s and position itself as a solid spoiler to get to nationals—if not one of the main picks—contending with the likes of Alabama and Denver.

THE 2020 STORY
LSU won’t have been particularly pleased with how 2020 was going. Some critical graduations coupled with a rash of key injuries left holes in lineups that had to be filled with [gasp] 9.7s—a shape of number that LSU wouldn’t typically be forced to look at. Things began to improve after a slow start, but even late February saw a streak of low 197s that left LSU looking like a juicy upset prospect in a regional final.

THE 2020 STORY
The 2020 season (as it were) may have seen a drop for Denver in the rankings compared to 2019’s finish, but that was pretty much always going to happen. A very specific confluence of events allowed Denver to finish 4th in 2019, and being able to retain a spot in the top 8 during the 2020 season with competitive scores throughout the year—even when Lynnzee Brown was missing with injury, on top of not having Sundstrom—proved that 2019 wasn’t a fluke and that 2020 should be chalked up as a victory.
