About
The Cheng. Because of its sheer difficulty, the Cheng remains the domain of only the most proficient vaulters in the world—and one or two misguided stragglers who will attempt it once internationally and then quit everything to go live in a shoe—and it has increasingly become the first vault of choice for those hoping to win a vault medal at a world championship or Olympics. Five of the eight athletes in the Tokyo Olympic vault final went for a Cheng.
Why has it become the vault of choice? In the 2017 code update, the Cheng was given a lovely present. It was suddenly worth two tenths more than the Amanar, just enough so that top vaulting gymnasts with both an Amanar and a Cheng started to realize they might be best-served using the Cheng as their team-counting/AA-counting vault in qualification rather than the Amanar. The Cheng has basically Eve Harrington-ed the Amanar, is what I’m trying to tell you.
