Before we get to today’s major action—the Big Five meets and Arizona’s regional-urgent visit to LSU—there’s a meet with quite significant postseason implications in Pitt v. UNC. These two are currently 38th and 39th in the in-progress RQS standings, and with all the other bubble teams suddenly getting big 196s this week (OH LOOK HOW THAT WORKED OUT NO PROBLEMS HERE), Pitt and UNC must keep pace to have a chance at getting back into the hunt. The main events won’t begin until a little later today, but there are some stakes built into the early action, particularly for 35th-ranked Kent State, which is currently on the regionals bubble.

The RQS standards have been updated after Thursday’s action, but to distill things, Kent State is looking for a 195.575 today at minimum. That score would ensure Kent State is in the top 36 on Monday heading into conference championships, the final chance to get a score before regionals are decided. Marquee Meets

[20] Georgia @ [4] Utah
Oh, the old rivalry—renewed with an extra dash of Yoculan. Makes everything spicier. Now we’re going to need Greg Marsden to run out onto the floor (and get a yellow card) just for nostalgia’s sake. Please.

A sense of it all: Both teams have technically won 10 college gymnastics national championships, but Georgia uses the endpoint of the NCAA recognizing women’s sports so that it can say Georgia has 10 NCAA championships and Utah has 9, since one of Utah’s titles came in the AIAW years. Utah, meanwhile, uses both the NCAA and AIAW years so that it can say Utah and Georgia each have 10 college gymnastics national championships. So it’s a whole ordeal. The “number of championships” controversy is one of my favorite things about this rivalry, and you have to pick a side. Continue reading NCAA Week 11 – Schedule and Links

Things Are Happening – March 15, 2018

A. BUT THEY HAD YOGURT

So here we go. Aly Gonna Getcha, Part 715.

In a Washington Post article, Aly Raisman expanded upon the issues she related in her book about the conditions at that Victorian Slum House known as the ranch. It was dirty, gross, poorly maintained, the food was bad, there was no nutritional assistance or even the smallest hint of appropriate medical facilities, and gymnasts were afraid to question any of it, all of which is corroborated by Melanie Seaman, an athletic trainer with the program during some critical years—and someone from whom I’d like to hear a lot more.

To anyone who read Aly’s book, this is mostly review (like studying for the final—and it will be on the test), but it does serve to reinforce the picture of a wildly antiquated environment with no safety/ behavioral standards or oversight and a training facility woefully inadequate for the medical and nutritional needs of a modern high-level athlete heading toward the Olympics.
