Things Are Happening

The big news out of the Red Flag Factory this week is Iowa State up and canceling the entire remainder of the season. Mimicking the language from last week’s single-meet cancellation, the department again stated, “we do not have enough student-athletes available to safely compete,” leaving us all waiting to learn what the actual reason is.

Because if the issue were merely that you only have four intact people who can go on bars, then you show up to the meets anyway and compete those four people and try to qualify individuals to regionals. You don’t cancel the season for everyone.

Now, we just have to (naively?) hope this is the tear-down that comes before a rebuild, rather than being a compelling excuse to eliminate the program entirely.

Also, the new NQS starts on Monday! Until now, teams have been ranked using season average, but starting with week 7, we’ll switch over to NQS 2026, the new ranking system.

The large majority of teams (those with five or fewer home meets on the calendar) will now simply remove one high and one low score from their records and average their remaining scores to get their new NQSs. For example:

Oklahoma drops the 198.425 from meet 3 (high score) and the 197.425 from meet 2 (low score) and averages the remaining meets to get an NQS of 197.85625. Hope you like decimal places!

Teams that have more than 5 home meets, however, will also have to start dropping an additional high home score once they compete in their 6th home meet. For example, Missouri’s current NQS will be calculated the same way as Oklahoma’s, but once they compete in week 9, they’ll have 6 home meet scores and will have to drop their highest home score in addition to the 1 high and 1 low score everyone has to drop.
