That’s Our History
Minnesota, Iowa @ Utah
The 2026 season opens with Minnesota and Iowa heading to the Huntsman Center to take on Utah. Utah owns a combined 40-1 record against Minnesota and Iowa, dating all the way back to the olden times and the 1976 AIAW national championship at Appalachian State, when Utah finished 10th and Minnesota 24th.
Undefeated all time against Iowa (6-0), Utah suffered its lone loss to Minnesota at a quad meet at Arizona State in February 2000. Greg Marsden called that performance “a coach’s nightmare”1 after Utah fell three times on beam in the first rotation and went on to finish last behind Arizona State, Alabama, and Minnesota.
It was a historically weak meet for Utah, and to this day, the 194.675 final score still ranks as Utah’s worst regular-season total of the 21st century. Marsden attributed the poor performance to an emotional letdown from the drama four days prior, when Utah won a contentious dual meet against soon-to-be national champions UCLA that featured (gasp!) accusations of corrupt scoring at a Utah home meet. We’re all shocked. We’ve never heard of such a thing.
“Scorewise, we were home-towned,”2 Miss Val had said afterward. “Our performances are already watered down, but I guess we have to water them down some more now, don’t we?” she said of her team of late 90s elites who were performing more bonus than necessary, snarking Utah for winning with “inferior routines.” Which went over great, you guys. So so great. Utah’s student paper accused Miss Val of blaming “everyone but herself” and compared her to a student who thinks they should be valedictorian without studying.3
And Marsden’s response? “She says they watered things down…and they missed six routines.”
Eat your heart out, Sarah and Suzanne.
