In other developments so far today, Michigan just won a close one at Ohio State thanks to an undeniable beam rotation to finish things out for 49.600.
UCLA has a tenth lead on Minnesota after two events, even though Chiles’ first two scores have been 9.900 and 9.875, which I think is a zero.
Speaking of UCLA, Paige Anastasi is in the counting vault lineup for Clemson for the first time, replacing Eve Jackson, who has been struggling with that Y1.5 and is only on bars today.
Sydney was quoting Liz and said, “You can’t make a memory without being present” but it really sounded like she said, “You can’t make a memory without being pregnant.” So there’s that.
Rotation 1
Clark – VT – Clemson – Tsuk full, hop back, some pike throughout. 9.825
Aderinto – UB – Cal – good first hs – Ray to overshoot, legs together – solid hs on high – toe 1/2 to double front, legs apart and flexed feet, step back. 9.775
Minner – VT – Clemson – Y1.5 tucked is hit, one tenth step forward. 9.825
Wiley – UB – Cal – toe on to pak, smooth – van leeuwen, leg separation – hits hs on high – DLO, chest forward with a small hop. 9.875
Holman – VT – Clemson – handspring pike 1/2, lunge back, small leg separation at the end, flexed feet. 9.825
Newman-Achee – UB – Cal – toe on to maloney to pak, solid form – a little angle in 1/2 turn on low – hits hs on high – FTDT, step back. 9.825
Cesario – VT – Clemson – Yfull, no control on the landing, huge bounce back and then another hop. 9.700
Melkonian – UB – Cal – jaeger to overshoot, hit – a bit tight on hs on high – DLO, some leg separation, good stick. 9.925
Walsh – VT – Clemson – Y1.5, small slide back and then an arm circle to try to control the landing – near stick but then two landing deductions. 9.900
The 9.9s are flowing out so far.
Meanwhile it’s a 10 on floor Chiles.
Brown – UB – Cal – short first hs – pak, lovely – hits hs on low – van leeuwen is excellent, legs together – toe on to toe pike 1/2, loses a bit of ankle form but strong stick. 9.850
Anastasi – VT – Clemson – yfull, OK, some pike at the end and a step back. 9.800
Paulsson – UB =- Cal – pak, nice – van leeuwen, slightest leg sep in there – toe full is pretty late this time, into double tuck, good stick. 9.925
After 1
Cal 49.400
Clemson 49.175
Cal got the lead they needed after bars, what should be the biggest advantage rotation for them. No sticks for Clemson, so they’ll take the season high score for that.
Rotation 2
Brown – VT – Cal – yfull, nice stick, good for in the air, not the most distance, but strong. 9.850
Lippeatt – UB – Clemson – Ray to overshoot, good dynamics, some foot flexing on Ray, good hs on high – giant full is past, into double tuck, holds the stick with an arm adjustment. 9.850
Paulsson – VT – Casl – yfull, little bounce back, more piking in the air than Brown. 9.825
H Clark – UB – Clemson – hitws first hs – blind to piked jaeger to overshoot, foot form break in jaeger – small arch in hs on high, pulls it back – DLO, another small leg break, good stick. 9.900
Newman-Achee – VT – Cal – yfull, solid amplitude, hop back. 9.850
Malewski – UB – Clemson – maloney, good leg position, connects to pak, pretty – 1/2 turn on low – shorter cast hs on high – toe full is past, into double tuck, good stick
Wiley – VT – Cal – yfull, more significant pike for her, full tenth bounce back. 9.750
Conference on Malewski. We see one judge had 10 SV and one judge had 9.9. Wonder if she wrote it as a giant full instead of a toe full or something. 9.875 in the end.
Jackson – UB – Clemson – blind to high jaeger to overshoot, good amplitude – FTDT is ragged, legs apart and bounce back, great until then. 9.775
Silvers – VT – Cal – lands her Y1.5, pretty large straddle on the block and then a step forward. 9.800
Cesario – UB – Clemson – blind, small pause before jaeger to overshoot, good height – hits hs on high – DLO, small hop back. 9.875
Mayhew – VT – Cal – oof way short on y1.5 and sits it down, got no block
Kuhl – UB – Clemson – good first hs – Ray to overshoot, solid dynamics, a little pike – hits hs on high – DLO, legs apart, good stick. 9.850
After 2
Clemson 98.525
Cal 98.475
Clemson takes over the lead after two, keeping it almost identical with Cal’s bars score, which will have been a goal. Clemson put up four 10.0 starts and vault and Cal put up two, with one fall. Which is basically the difference maker so far.
197.550 is the final for UCLA as they win a pretty close one at Minnesota. Alipio seals it with 9.925 beam. Minnesota done on 197.275.
Rotation 3
Walsh – BB – Clemson – bhs loso, hit – kickover, connects quickly to beat, slight control – beat to split ring jump, would like to see a little more height and ring – 1.5 dmt, some knees, strong stick. 9.800
Brown – FX – Cal – fhs rudi is fun, good control on landing – switch ring to tour jete 1/2 ring, lands a little under rotated – back 1.5 to 1/2 to split, not the highest but under control. 9.825
B Clark – BB – Clemson – standing front tuck to beat is excellent – bhs loso, check on landing, some foot position – full turn kind of out of control – straddle positions are strong in straddle to straddle 1/4 – rudi dmt, hop back. 9.875
Newman-Achee – FX – Cal – wolf double is precise – rudi to double stag, hit, leg crossing in twist – switch ring to switch 1/2, good ring – back 1.5 to front lay, clean lay, good landing, leg sep in twisting again. 9.875
Lippeatt – BB – Clemson – full turn, solid – aerial, a little slow into side aerial, secure landing – switch to split jump, solidly done – 1.5 dmt, step forward. 9.825
Silvers – FX – Cal – double tuck, little rebound, shins apart in the air – switch into wolf, a little imprecise in landing position but good position – 1.5 to layout, kind of awkward on landing with crossover step. 9.750
We’re still doing the phone and the beam width?
I’m sorry, it’s the width of a VHS tape and we all know it.

Cesario – BB – Clemson – bhs loso wobble arm wave – switch 1/2, under split on front leg, into split jump – 1.5 dmt is high, holds onto stick with little lean. 9.800
Keuneke – FX – Cal – rudi to loso, nice rise in loso, some knee position in twisting – switch 1/2, over turns some, into wolf full, good wolf – back 1.5 to 1/2 to straddle jump, solid control – wolf double, comfortable. 9.875
Kuhl – BB – Clemson – bhs bhs loso, hit, lean after landing – sissone – beat to split ring, also not such high on the ring – full turn – 1.5 dmt, some knee, nice stick. 9.800
Mayhew – FX – Cal – front 2/1 to front pike, good control, also some leg twisting form – switch ring to switch 1/2 – back 1.5 to lay, whips around the lay a little, mostly controls the step. 9.875
Malewski – BB – Clemson – wolf double, arm wave balance – side aerial to bhs is hit – switch, leannnns through it to split to try to get the combo – 1.5 dmt, hop forward. 9.800
Paulsson – FX – Cal – front tuck through to double tuck, nice control on landing – switch 1/2, overturns into wolf 1.5, but nice positions, some lack of control on landing – double pike, great feet, short landing with hop forward. 9.700
After 3
Cal 147.675
Clemson 147.625
Cal takes back the lead after the third rotation, but it’s slim heading to the end. Clemson squeezes through a beam lineup without major error but everyone had something. Some nice things for Cal on floor, but this is where I feel like you miss Frazier and Lauzon the most. They’re lacking the big wow at the end of the lineup to get those 9.9s and drive up the rotation score.
Rotation 4
Melkonian – BB – Cal – bhs loso, secure landing – switch ring, check on landing, looked a bit closer in the ring position, at least from this angle – beat to split 3/4, holds it – full turn, check – 1.5, some direction, step to the side. 9.750
Lippeatt – FX – Clemson – double tuck, mostly controls the step back, maybe a little slide, solid legs together position in tuck, some foot flexing – switch side 1/2 to straddle, good – sissone into back 1.5 to front full, under control, good twist shape. 9.825
Paulsson – BB – Cal – full turn is smooth – aerial to bhs, nice, great foot position in bhs – side aerial, small correction – switch to switch 1/2 is hit – wobbles on side choreo – gainer full, nice stick. 9.875
Holman – FX – Clemson – front 2/1, crossover dance out, covers it but not totally under control – switch side to wolf full, rather short on wolf position – rudi to loso is solid, not quite on line so almost went OOB but didn’t. 9.825
Lee – BB – Cal – aerial to split jump – bhs loso, secure landing, good – full turn – switch to beat, leans through, gets the combo, small adjustment – gainer full, holds the stick. Good. 9.900
Walsh – FX – Clemson – front full to front full, controls the step – loso down the side, good foot position – switch to switch ring 1/2, solid ring position achieved there – rudi, lands, chest down, lower but controls the step. 9.875
Scanlon – BB – Cal – wolf double, slightly high in the position but controlled – bhs loso, secure, good foot position – switch 1/2 is high, into split jump – 1.5, holds the stick with some stagger. Nice one. 9.900
Cesario – FX – Clemson – FTDT, good control, some leg separation in the air, chest up – switch to switch ring 1/2, lower front leg – back 1.5 to layout, doesn’t really rise in the layout, but comfortable landing. 9.825
Aderinto – BB – Cal – kickover to beat, very nice – bhs loso, landed, some foot position in the air – full turn, small correction – hitch kick to switch 1/2, secure, not the highest switch 1/2 – gainer full, step back. 9.850
Clark – FX – Clemson – DLO, good height, bounce back – front lay to front full to front tuck is excellent – tour jete 1/2 to popa, very clearly around. Good. 9.900
Newman-Achee – BB – Cal – wolf double, good – bhs los off line and falls, so they will count the 9.750 for Melkonian.
Minner – FX – Clemson – needs 9.900 to tie, 9.925 to win. Doesn’t usually score that high. front 2/1 to loso hit, little adjustment on landing – switch 1/2 to popa, a little under on the position and rotation – front 2/1 is under rotated with a crossover step around
Let’s have a judges conference about the last score! We see one judge with a 9.900, the other with 9.750, so out of range.
Geralen’s like, “Pardon me, but TF?”
Let’s talk about it longer!
9.850 for Minner, so Clemson will come up half a tenth short. Yeah, I really don’t think you can give that last routine a 9.900
FINAL
Cal 196.950
Clemson 196.875
Ooooh, a close one. The middle of Cal’s beam lineup sold me on them today. That was the best stretch of routines we saw in the meet. Beam can be a strength for Cal this season, even with the departures, and we saw the first shades of that.
Back to judges talking! Clemson inquiry? They’re telling us it’s over for real now.
