We’ve got a big one today as Florida, the team with the best on-paper roster this season, takes on Oklahoma, the team that’s actually doing the best this season.

Now that NQS is in play and the high and low are dropped, we can see Oklahoma’s advantage through the head-to-head counting scores for each team, where Oklahoma has four of the five highest counters.

OklahomaFlorida
198.200
198.175
197.725
197.550
197.500
197.425
197.100
Drop: 198.425,
197.425
Drop: 198.050, 196.500

In honor of the occasion, Kayla DiCello is slated to make her season AA debut today. She joins Frazier, Harris, and Fatta as the AAers. Pawlak is in the anchor spot on floor for Oklahoma, which could signal an upgrade.

Every time John calls Aly a gold medalist and Sam a silver medalist, I feel like Sam mentally throws a tray of ice cubes at a wall.

Pink wedgies for breast cancer awareness. Out of respect.

Rotation 1

DiCello – VT – Florida – Y1.5, very short landing, multiple steps back. Need to drop that score. 9.625

Pederson – UB – Oklahoma – good first hs – Ray, hit – hits hs on high – toe on to pak, good height – a little slow/late on 1/2 turn on low – hits hs on high – DLO, great stick. 9.850

G Disidore – VT – Florida – Y1.5, it’s hit, pretty large lunge forward and knees in the air

“If this gets a 9.8 I’ll be surprised.” Famous last words from John.

9.800.

Of course.

I don’t think the 9.850 is that weird for Pederson, but I agree we’ve seen that exact routine go 9.950 before.

Murphy – UB – Oklahoma – good first hs – toe on to maloney to pak, smooth combo – 1/2 turn, a little closer to vertical – hits hs on high – giant full, a bit late, into a double tuck, stuck. 9.875

Draser – VT – Florida – Y1.5, hop forward, medium one tenth size, soft knees in the air. 9.850, also friendly

Scheible – UB – Oklahoma – blind to jaeger, good feet – solid hs – bail, legs together well – hits hs on high – FTDT, great feet, stuck landing. 9.900

Frazier – VT – Florida – DTY, hits i, chest up and complete, but a little leg separation in the air, and hop back and another small hop, and off direction. 9.800

Fatta – UB – Oklahoma – Church, a little close, doesn’t connect – toe on to pak nice – 1/2 turn, good vertical finish from her – DLO, a little piking, nice stick. 9.900 for the biggest error in the lineup so far. But added a toe-on before the Pak so she still had a 10.0 start.

Ferris – VT – Florida – Y1.5, their first good hit of the lineup (despite what the scores might say), little leg separation, hop forward. 9.900

Estep – UB – Oklahoma – good hs – tkatchev, hit, can deduct for amplitude – bail, legs together well – short final hs – giant ful to FTDT, stuck. 9.925

Harris-Miranda – VT – Florida – Y1.5, very flat off the table, no amplitude or distance, under-rotated lunge back, just gets it to her feet kind of magically, should be even lower than DiCello. 9.600. Just barely.

Torrez – UB – Oklahoma – Ray, good height, nice – toe on to pak, very high but does have a clear leg separation – 1/2 turn on low – a bit rushed on final hs – DLO, leg sep, step back. 9.850

After 1
Oklahoma 49.450
Florida 48.975

Not a good vault rotation from Florida, and with two near falls and some other large landing errors, the half point deficit could have been a lot worse. Oklahoma with a strong bars, stuck five of six, which is a big deal. I do feel like we scored the rotation order there too much, and the first half of the lineup was stronger than the second half.

Florida is entering full Capital P Problem territory.

Rotation 2

Blessey – VT – Oklahoma – handspring pike 1/2, chest up pretty well, solid direction, medium hop back. 9.825

That’s not a 2-tenth-sized hop. It SHOULD be. But it’s not, by the rules. That’s going to be one tenth.

Frazier – UB – Florida – toe on to maloney to pak, leg separation – 1/2 turn, pretty good finish – hits hs on high – DLO, nice stick. 9.875

Wells – VT – Oklahoma – Y1.5, clean twisting shape in the air, pretty large lunge. 9.850.

Pilgrim – UB – Florida – maloney to tkatchev, hit today, low maloney but her usual amplitude – pak is nice – pretty solid 1/2 turn from her as well – hits 1/2 turn on high – FTDT, holds stick with smallest lean.

Torrez – VT – Oklahoma – Y1.5, nice one, near stick, small movement with feet, not a lot of distance compared to some of the others so that should be part of it. But probably won’t be. 9.925.

Blakely – UB – Florida – Downie to pak, very nice – excellent finish position on 1/2 turn on low – good hs – higgins to front giant to double front 1/2, little cowboy, little hop. 9.925

Aly is going full Maroney’s TF vault on this one. She’s basically yelling THAT SHOULD BE 16.500.

Estep – VT – Oklahoma – Y1.5, good in the air but also lands short with a crossover backward step. 9.825.

DiCello – UB – Florida – good hs – Church to pak good connection, slight elbows on church – van leeuwen, good legs together – hits hs on high – FTDT, stuck. Nice. 9.950

Mueller – VT – Oklahoma – Y1.5, solidly clean, one tenth step forward, loses the form at the very end. 9.825

Harris – UB – Florida – good hs – Ray, solid – hits hs on high – toe on to bail, legs together – strong hs on high – DLO, pikes first salto, small slide back. 9.900

Fatta – VT – Oklahoma – Y1.5, very good stick, solid, the better vaults today haven’t had the same distance as the others, but good landing, slight foot form in the end, not super super far. And it’s 10.000. Not a 10 for me. Not shocking because vault scoring has been loose.

McCusker – UB – Florida – Stalder shap to pak is nice – van leeuwen, legs together cleanly – hits hs – stalder to double tuck, nice stick, not the highest dismount amplitude. 9.975.

Oklahoma’s strong anchor vault getting 10 and Florida’s even stronger anchor bars getting 9.975 is some Florida fan’s villain origin story. Like, when they aim a laser at the moon in 15 years, it will be because of this.

After 2
Oklahoma 98.875
Florida 98.625

Florida picks up ground in rotation 2 because bars was a birthday party and Oklahoma was sort of meh on vault until Fatta. Not the landing problems of Florida, but not an ideal rotation. On bars, I thought they went too high for Pilgrim but Blakely and DiCello’s scores I don’t have that much of an argument with. Very strong routines.

Rotation 3

Draser – BB – Florida – bhs loso is secure – switch, a little slow, into switch 1/2, well under split position – full turn – 1.5 dmt, stuck. 9.875

We got a replay like they were going to do the split line on Draser’s switch 1/2, to show that it was well short of 180, but then they didn’t?

Pederson – FX – Oklahoma – front 2/1, very slightly under-rotated, controls the distance of step out – back 1.5 through to 2/1, great landing, chest up, under control – switch 1/2, over turns, into popa and wolf full, gets lower in the position on wolf full. 9.875

Arana – BB – Florida – bhs loso, good landing – aerial, smooth – switch to switch 1/2, a little closer to split, great on the first switch, small lean check on landing – full turn – gainer full. 9.900

Murphy – FX – Oklahoma – front tuck through to double tuck, controls step back, chest up on landing – switch 1/2 to wolf full is comfortable – back 1.5 to front lay, whips it over a little, could see more rise – switch full, around. 9.875

Blakely – BB – Florida – shoulder roll mount – wolf triple, pulls it around with arms all over the place – no other wolf turn, yesssss – aerial to bhs, aly questions whether she’ll get the connection, but she definitely will – switch 1/2, much stronger split position, into beat jump – wolf jump, nice height – gainer full, good height, little hop. 9.900

Estep – FX – Oklahoma – front lay to front 2/1, under control – switch 1/2 to wolf full to double stag looked solid – back 2.5, a bit of leg separation, just holds onto landing control there, avoiding the slide forward – 9.900

Frazier – BB – Florida – full turn – aerial, continues moving into loso connection – split to split ring, lovely positions – 1.5 dismount, step forward. 9.850

Mueller – FX – Oklahoma – front tuck through to double tuck, chest up, controls step, some feet – front lay to rudi, that’s the best she’s done that one this season, fully rotated, chest up more, step is close to OOB but in? – tour jete 1/2 to popa, around – 9.925

Harris – BB – Florida – bhs loso bhs, right on – switch to straddle 1/4, good height in straddle – full turn, smooth – 1.5 dmt, stuck. Nice one. 9.950

Sam’s comment about how Florida has a very sweet team and then also Selena is very funny.

Fatta – FX – Oklahoma – front full to 2.5 is awkward on landing, under with a sideward-backward lunge – tour jete 1/2 to popa, around – front 2/1, also deep on landing, crossover step with some knees at the end – is there a deduction for blowing a kiss after the music ends? Got away with a 9.775 there, but should be the drop anyway.

DiCello – BB – Florida – candle mount, hit – wolf double big wobble, nearrrrlly grabs the beam, doesn’t but a large error, big bend forward, arm wave – switch to split, comfortable – bhs loso, very slight arm correction on landing – aerial, another small squeeze check – gainer full, stuck. 9.875 is insane. That wolf turn was perfect, what are you saying about?

Pawlak – FX – Oklahoma – just does the double pike, it’s clean, controls the step, good form – switch 1/2 to wolf full, good positions – back 1.5 to front full is hit, but gets lower amplitude on front full with some knees – switch 1/1, cheats it around, fairly under split and a little under rotated. 9.925 is a lot as well.

After 3
Oklahoma 148.375
Florida 148.125

What more wildness do you hold?

Rotation 4

Fatta – BB – Oklahoma – bhs loso, secure landing, maybe some chest position – side aerial, hit as well – hit to switch side, better in the rise to straddle position – holds full turn – switch, a little rushed in that position, into solid split jump – bhs gainer full, legs slightly apart, good stick. 9.900

A Disidore – FX – Florida – DLO, little bounce rebound – switch side, slight overturn, into popa, hit – back 1.5 to front full, controls step forward. 9.875

Wells – BB – Oklahoma – the worm – cat leap to switch side aerial, very strong – full turn, tight but fine – switch to split, back leg on switch – bhs loso, nice – 1.5, stuck. 9.950, we’re off to the races

Ferris – FX – Florida – DLO, bigger slide back, stays in but not a controlled landing – switch side to popa – so, elite for Morocco is happening? – back 1.5 to front full, also under control, some knee position – 9.900 to make sure it stays exciting

Murphy – BB – Oklahoma – candle mount, hit – bhs loso, very nice position – aerial, good – full turn, good – beat to split ring jump, holds it, maybe a very slight lean on landing – bhs gainer full, comfortable stick. chest up. 9.975, not even that mad honestly

Frazier – FX – Florida – DLO, good height and control – switch ring to switch 1/2 to straddle is excellent – front through to double tuck is weirdness, surprised herself with that bounce back and size and then a big chest down correction on the bounce. 9.725

Pederson – BB – Oklahoma – bhs loso, solid – side somi, holds it securely – hitch to switch side, under split and some angle in the straddle position – 1.5 dmt, holds onto stick with lean forward. 9.900. Had more room to deduct on that one, could have created more separation.

Blakely – FX – Florida – double front to stag jump, very good control, cowboy – tour jete 1/2 to popa is around – back 1.5 to front full, does the best job of maintaining an extended twist position in the front full we’ve seen on that pass today. 9.950

Mueller – BB – Oklahoma – candle mount – full turn, slight hesitation – bhs loso, hit – Aly getting 10 gym nerd points for pointing out bent elbows on bhs, which is a deduction, but one they always ignore – side aerial, small check – switch to straddle 1/4, another check correction – 1.5 dmt, stuck. 9.925 with like 3 small checks. It’s cool, nothing matters.

Harris – FX – Florida – FTDT, controls the step back, chest up, small leg separation – tour jete 1/2 to popa to shushunova very good – back 1.5 to front full, nice control, a tad lower but not bad. 9.975

Torrez – BB – Oklahoma – wolf jump – side aerial to loso, very secure – full turn, hit, a little tight but fine – switch to straddle jump, good – bhs gainer full, a bit back on her heels, holds onto it. 9.950

A very nice beam rotation for Oklahoma. 49.700 is…enthusiastic, but a very nice rotation.

DiCello – FX – Florida – FTDT, controls the step, leg sep looked better than Harris’s 9.975 – switch ring to switch 1/2, fine, got a little slow going into switch 1/2, good ring position – back 1.5 to barani is a struggle, not all the way there yet, chest well down with lunge forward. 9.750

We’re still repeating that DiCello was definitely going to make the Olympic team in 2024. Was she though?

FINAL
Oklahoma 198.075
Florida 197.575

Florida had about half of a good meet, but that seemingly competitive-looking 197.575 doesn’t tell the story of continued struggles and not performing up to potential. Oklahoma had more like 6/8 of a good meet. Most of the vault landings were not ideal, but some really nice moments on bars and beam and another 198.
