UCLA going with the same competitors as last week. Webster-Longin is listed for exhibition on three events. Michigan makes just the one change, swapping out Sanger on floor after her miss last week and putting in Peyton Davis.

We watch Jordan Chiles warm up a DTY and land short and Simone-crawl off the mat into a running limp. Everything’s fine.

Rotation 1

Sumanasekera – VT – UCLA – yfull, good dynamics and position in the air, small movement on landing, small pike at the end

Scores say 9.450 with a 9.900/9.000 split, which is wrong, and a fun start. Assume they meant to type 9.9 and typed 9.0 and will fix it later.

Jordan – UB – Michigan – good first hs – blind to jaeger, great feet and extension on catch – bail, legs together solidly – giant full, a bit past, into double tuck, holds landing. Solid.

Anyimi – VT – UCLA – yfull, good power but can’t control the landing with a big bounce back, tries to pike down at the end and control but doesn’t. 9.750

Clapper – UB – Michigan – blind to piked jaeger, hit – solid hs on high – bail, angle in the air, some elbows on catch – DLO, floaty but chest down, hop forward.

Rosen – VT – UCLA – y1.5 with a pretty strong landing – arm circle to hold onto the stick – tucks the position at the end. 9.875

Still waiting on any Michigan bars scores to come in. Feels like maybe we need less of a floor party and more of a technology party.

Diaz – UB – Michigan – good hs – toe on to maloney to bail, legs together, solid vertical position as well – short hs on high – DLO, not super high but gets to the solid landing with some pike in the air. 9.850

Jenkins – VT – UCLA – y1.5, hits but lands under-rotated with a step back, leg separation on block. 9.775

We have Ava Jordan’s bars score now at 9.875. And Sumanasekera’s vault has been fixed to 9.900. And now Jordan’s bars is 9.900. Clapper’s bars 9.775.

Another big delay. The thing about Los Angeles is that we don’t have the internet here, so one couldn’t possibly get these scores updated.

Lew – UB Michigan – toe 1/2 to piked jaeger looks solid – a bit fast on hs on high – pak, hit with leg separation – 1/2 turn on low is solid – hits hs on high – DLO, lower, piking in second salto, step back. 9.850

Sullivan – VT – UCLA – Y1.5, great height, medium lunge forward. 9.850

Bauman – UB – Michigan – toe 1/2 to jaeger, huge height and toooo huge in the overshoot, very high, grabs close and collapses onto the low bar – resumes with double front, multiple steps back. 9.175

Chiles – VT – DTY, bigger bounce back than we’ve seen so far this year, then a step salute without showing the finish position, so an extra deduction. 9.825

Parenti – UB – Michigan – hits hs – toe on to Ray, good height into overshoot, leg sep at the end – solid hs on high – DLO, nice stick. 9.950

Eichman exhibition vault, yfull with big bounce back. Sanger falls on piked Jaeger in exhibition for Michigan.

After 1
Michigan 49.325
UCLA 49.225

What I really love is how long it took and how many delays there were. Michigan pulls out a lead after 1 rotation. They do pretty well to avoid leg separation and handstand deductions on bars. Most of the stuff coming on dismount, but not deducted that harshly. UCLA with enough full-tenth landing deductions on vault to keep the scores pedestrian, as Sumanasekera’s full ends up winning the rotation.

Rotation 2

Davis – VT – Michigan – yfull, pretty solid, medium bounce back, light pike at the end. 9.775

Alipio – UB – UCLA – short first hs – toe on to maloney to bail, leg separation in the maloney – good hs on high – giant full, controls at vertical but some angle, to toe 1/2 dismount, finds the stick, chest a bit down. 9.850

Guggino – VT – Michigan – y1.5, just barely gets to her feet, deep landing and then a large lunge sideward off the mat, almost didn’t block at all. 9.475

Sumanasekera – UB – UCLA – stalder shap to pak, nice feet, smooth – rushes 1/2 turn on low, past vertical – hits hs on high – FTDT, small leg sep, good stick. 9.900

“Janelle McDonald has one speed, and it’s hip-hip-hooray” is going in the Evan hall of fame.

Boozer – VT – Michigan – yfull, hits, step back, leg separation on block and again at the end. 9.725

Matthews – UB – UCLA – pak, smooth – good hs on low – van leeuwen, leg sep – short on a couple handstands in here – DLO, small pike at the end to stick well. 9.925

We’re still going pretttttty high on bars today and it’s getting more extreme. Chiles is like, “so I just have to stick right?”

Jordan – VT – Michigan – yfull, good pop, medium bounce back. 9.775

Barros – UB – UCLA – very short first hs – hits pak – some angle in hs on low – toe on to good van leeuwen – better hs on high – DLO, little quiver of movement. 9.850

Diaz – VT – Michigan – clean y1.5 in the air, good distance, but another big bounce forward. 9.800

Sullivan – UB – UCLA – good hs – toe on to tkatchev, nice amplitude into pak, a bit of flexed feet at the end on tkatchev -1 /2 on low, slightly past – hits hs on high – DLO, stuck. 9.900

Ranger – VT – Michigan – Y1.5, best of the rotation, one tenth step forward. 9.850

Chiles – UB – UCLA – tkatchev piked to pak, good – 1/2 turn on low is a little crooked and past – good hs on high – DLO, stuck landing. 9.925. Glad the judges didn’t lose their minds because she did have a clear deduction on cast 1/2 on low.

After 2
UCLA 98.725
Michigan 98.250

UCLA puts up a big 49.500 on bars thanks to a crap-ton of sticks. Very strong rotation, got away with some handstands and leg separations, but hit well. Michigan not great on vault. It was fine, but if you’re doing yfulls at this point, they need to be pristine and controlled, otherwise it’s an auto-9.7.

Webster-Longin hits a very nice bars in exhibition. That’s ready to come back into the lineup.

Rotation 3

Pre-beam convo. Lacey is demonstrating to Katelyn Rosen how to make a peanut butter sandwich and then fly out the window of a church while cackling.

Rosen – BB – UCLA – switch to split, good – beat to onodi, small waver on landing, deeeeep in the beat in order to keep the combo going – bhs loso, covers with arm choreo – full turn, check – 1.5, holds stick with another small torso adjustment. 9.850

Davis – FX – Michigan – front lay to rudi, hit, small rebound – switch 1/2 to wolf fulls, good height, somewhat indistinct on landing position – double pike, fine, under control. 9.850

Barros – BB – UCLA – switch, small adjustment before straddle 1/4, hit elements but did adjust feet in between so they should deny combo – side aerial to bhs is secure – full turn – gainer full, good stick. 9.900. So…uh…they definitely gave the combo.

Walters – FX – Michigan – front 2/1, seemed really strong but then just a tad under-rotated today with a step back – switch 1/2 to popa to straddle, pretty positions – back 1.5 to front full, good control – 9.875

Eichman – BB – UCLA – bhs loso, secure – cat leap to side somi, holds under control – a little slow with beat into switch 1/2 but connected, looked a bit under on switch 1/2 position but a bad angle – full turn – punch front full dismount, a little short with slide adjustment. 9.825.

Parenti – FX – Michigan – double pike, controls step, chest down – I really like her switch position and feet, but landed sort of 3/4 around – back 1.5 to front full, kind of an I-stepped-on-a-bee step out of it but under control. 9.875

Sumanasekera – BB – UCLA – switch to split, good positions – bhs loso, solid amplitude and feet, hit – aerial to split jump hit – full turn, small check – bhs tuck 1.5, stiff legged landing with a crossover step forward. 9.775

Diaz – FX – Michigan – front 2/1, slightly under rotated, crossover step but not large into dance out – wolf single – rudi to loso, leg crossing, good control – switch 1/2 to wolf full, good. 9.925 we’re going today.

Chiles – BB – UCLA – bhs loso, smooth landing – cat leap to switch side, holds it – full turn, good control – side aerial, comfortable – 2/1, can’t hold the stick with a step back. 9.875

“Unfortunately she did not absorption.”

Bauman – FX – Michigan – front 2/1, quick dance out – switch 1/2 to wolf full to wolf full – also REALLY noticing that Maile has brought the Oklahoma-Dance-Out to Michigan twisting passes – back 1.5 to nice layout, good rise and position – 9.925

Alipio – BB – UCLA – full turn – bhs bhs loso, good leg positions throughout, secure landing – side aerial, hit, a little around the side – split leap to switch to beat, nice feet, smooth combo – gainer tuck full, holds onto the stick despite landing a little stiff. 9.900

They started really loose on beam and then tightened up so in the end all the routines were the same.

Ranger – FX – Michigan – DLO, step back, looked like she just kept it in bounds – switch 1/2 to popa – front lay through to double tuck, good control on the stick, chest just somewhat down. 9.875

After 3
UCLA 148.075
Michigan 147.725

Michigan closes the gap slightly with a hit floor rotation, only some small landing errors, lots of big numbers. I expect we’ll be popping off there shortly. UCLA was fine on beam, just a little tight, a little checky overall. The scoring was…just weird? Defied clear categorization?

Rotation 4

Parenti – BB – Michigan – full turn, arm wave correction – bhs loso, held well, no check, landed a little off line but fine – switch to split, good – aerial, pulls into a split jump, pretty leg positions on both – 1.5 dmt, a little low, good stick. 9.875

Rosen – FX – UCLA – double tuck, chest up, shows good control – double pike, solid as well, same control – switch ring to switch 1/2 wolf full, just gets a little out of control on landing – 1.5 to layout, not a rise into the layout but enough height to be solid. 9.900

Walters – BB – Michigan – straddle jump, great – full turn, another with an arm wave check – kickover front, deep bend wobble and no connection – has to redo into bhs to get the acro series – split leap to switch 1/2 to beat, hit – punch front full, hop forward. 9.650 is kind of too close to the hit scores

Alipio – FX – UCLA – double pike, very good landing – feel like her foot got caught in the sting mat for an odd step moment in choreo – switch ring to switch full and wolf full, excellent positions – wolf double, nice – back 1.5 to front full, also controls it, just a little low. And we have a 9.950 with one judge going 10. It’s going to be something.

Jordan – BB – Michigan – side aerial to loso, very smooth, good – beat, a little slow, into straddle jump 1/2, lean correction – full turn, ginger but not a check – kickover, same wobble as Walters but didn’t need an acro connection – gainer pike, good stick. 9.700

Barros – FX – UCLA – back 1.5 to layout, looked a little broad on the step out slide – switch full looks around – front tuck through to double tuck, controls the step back in bounds, chest up well – switch 1/2, over turns into wolf full, so like a wolf 3/4. 9.900

Bauman – BB – Michigan – full turn – bhs loso, secure – split jump to straddle 1/2 to sissone, looked under on those positions, which is not usual for her, tight – piked side somi is good – gainer pike, hop back. 9.850

Sumanasekera – FX – UCLA – DLO, hit, little slide adjustment on landing, small pike down – switch ring to switch 1/2 wolf full, strong – back 1.5 to lay, shows stronger rise into the layout second element – 9.900

Ranger – BB – Michigan – full turn, good – bhs loso loso, good landing – switch to pike jump, comfortable – kickover, right on, chest up, very good – double tuck, holldddssss onto the landing, so it’s a stick, but also kind of back on her feels and then didn’t ever show full control. 9.925

Sullivan – FX – UCLA – DLO, high, slide back out of control – tour jete 1/2 to popa, good completion, comfortable rotation – front tuck through to double tuck, shows more control on step back. 9.875

Boozer – BB – Michigan – switch to split to straddle, excellent positions – aerial, right on – holds full turn – bhs loso, good foot positions, strong – gainer full, little slide back. 9.900

Chiles – FX – UCLA – DLO, controls the step back, keeps layout position – tour jete 1/2 to wolf full, comfortable – front tuck through to double tuck, controls the step back as well – piked shushunova full, hit. And we have another floor 10. Fourth in a row on floor.

FINAL
UCLA 197.725
Michigan 196.975

UCLA brings the score up into a strong territory with floor, though not high enough to get ahead of Alabama and Florida in the rankings. Michigan ends up with two semi-iffy rotations to go under 197, not a bad score but not super usable and below their current NQS.

Webster-Longin almost falls in floor exhibition on front 2/1, so not quite ready to get back into this lineup. A miss from Sanger in exhibition. Matthews exhibition on floor, great to watch, but enough deductions that it won’t outscore the counters from this week.
