I put today’s highest-ranked meets in the image at the top, though I sort of just want to bop around and follow what looks the most interesting tonight. Which inevitably means I will become paralyzed by choice and just sit there like an object.
Now let’s play Virtius Addiction:
Georgia’s lineups are in, sans Lily Smith, with one change from last week: Jaydah Battle coming in on beam (!) and Kara Eaker currently in exhibition. Grace Anne Davis is back in Missouri’s beam 6 instead of Tanskanen.
No Parenti for Michigan. Sanger in on bars and floor. A couple changes for Clemson: Minner instead of Arnold on floor, Brown instead of Kuhl on bars, Jackson instead of Anastasi on vault.
For North Carolina, Fink is off beam and floor, with Aoki on beam and Stippich on floor. Minnesota is running out the same 24.
Gladieux is not on vault for Alabama. Greaves is not on beam for Auburn. Neal is in the AA for Auburn.
North Carolina won the who’s starting first contest. Prejean hits a yfull with a hop back, some pike. 9.775. Gerdes first on bars for Minnesota, solid first hs – toe on to maloney to bail, small leg separations, slight pike – shorter hs on high – FTDT, holds the stick.
Kevin Copp confirming that Lily Smith is out for the season with a broken foot.
Neve King second on vault for UNC, also a hop back on her yfull but then an additional step salute as the struggles to control the finish position.
Rotation 1 – Georgia v Missouri
Scott – VT – Georgia – lovely yfull as always, some chest down at the end to try to hold the stick. 9.875
Green – UB – Missouri – toe on to maloney, good amplitude into pak – pretty solid 1/2 turn on low – DLO, legs apart at the end, lunge back on landing
Bacskay – VT – Georgia – a little short on y1.5, slightly locked on landing with a step back. 9.775
Michigan got a better y1.5 from Guggino this week, hop forward but no short landing.
Macpherson – UB – Missouri – good first hs – tkatchev, OK, hit – toe on to bail, legs together – some slight hip pike in places here – good stick on FTDT. 9.875
Moll – VT – Georgia – hits her y1.5, medium hop forward. 9.825
Malewski sticks her double tuck bars dismount for Clemson.
Kelly – UB – Missouri – toe on to Church to overshoot, hit, slight pike – solid hs on high – toe on to stalder, little hesitant – into double tuck, good stick
Aquino – VT – Georgia – Tsuk 1/1, good, little hop back, slight pike at the end, good distance as always. 9.825
Terry – UB – Missouri – toe on, some elbows into a nice gienger to overshoot, clear amplitude – solid hs on high – FTDT, possible little rebound (we can’t tell) but good control overall. 9.925
Williams – VT – Georgia – Y1.5, medium step forward, good height. 9.900, so they only took the landing.
Trinity Brown back on bars for Clemson and goes 9.925, ties a team record.
Horton – UB – Missouri – hits shaposh to pak, great leg form, not the most amplitude on shaposh but good position – little ankle moment in her 1/2 turn on low – DLO very good, stuck. 9.950. We’re going quite high on bars.
Wahl – VT – Georgia – Y1.5, to her feet, looked a little flat off the vault, shorter landing with step back
Echolls – UB – Missouri – bail, hit, little pike – hits hs on high – blind to khorkina, took it flat and far and couldn’t catch, but they do have five hits already.
Minnesota had a very scary bars miss for Saltzmann in there where she took her DLO too close and almost clipped her face but ended up clipping her feet.
Kaya Forbes followed for UNC and got 9.925 for a non-stuck Yurchenko full with a lean forward, which was insane.
After 1
Missouri 49.425, Georgia 49.250
Clemson 49.300, Michigan 49.075
Minnesota 49.300, North Carolina 49.250
Oh, it’s all happening now. Georgia did not have awesome landings on vault, so will have work to do against Missouri, which had five hits on bars.
Most surprising margin so far goes to Clemson/Michigan. So let’s check in on that one for rotation 2.
Rotation 2 – Clemson v Michigan
Clark – VT – Clemson – tsuk 1/1, medium bounce back. 9.750
Jordan – UB – Michigan – small arch in first hs – blind to jaeger, looked like she took it super far but catches – bail, legs together – giant full to double tuck, hop back
Minner – VT – Clemson – Y1.5 tucked, holds onto the stick, some flexed feet, solid one. 9.850
Clapper – UB – Michigan – blind to piked jaeger is solid – some leg separation form in bail – DLO, good height, holds stick. Nice. 9.900
Holman – VT – Clemson – handspring pike 1/2, powerful but a pretty large lunge back, leg separation in 1/2 turn. 9.775
Diaz – UB – Michigan – Maloney to bail, legs together – hits hs on high – DLO, bounce back, holds on after the bounce back for no further landing deduction. 9.800
Cesario – VT – Clemson – yfull is solid, holds onto the stick with a little lean forward adjustment. 9.825
Griffin didn’t get much block on her leadoff vault for Missouri, lands short on yfull.
Lew – UB – Michigan – good first hs – toe 1/2 to piked jaeger, nice – a little tight on hs on high – pak – 1/2 turn on low, looked pretty solid on the finish position – DLO, locked legs on landing with a couple steps back. 9.775
Walsh – VT – Clemson – lands shorter on y15 today with a quick hop back, solid form in the air. Still goes 9.850, which is high for an under-rotation
Bauman – UB – Michigan – toe 1/2 to jaeger to overshoot, great – smooth hs on high – blind to double front, holds onto the stick with a stagger. Good one. 9.950
Anastasi replaces Jackson on vault, pretty large lunge back on yfull, 9.775.
Sanger – UB – Michigan – good first hs – higgins, slightly hesitant into piked jaeger, hit – short hs on high – hits pak, high, leg separation – not quite there on cast hs positions – DLO, hop back. 9.825 still.
Clemson and Michigan tied on 98.375 after 2 events.
Over to the second half of rotation2 for Georgia and Missouri.
Woolford – UB – Georgia – huge struggle on Pak, high but tucks it and burches her legs on the mat trying to swing through
Horton – VT – Missouri – Y1.5 with very large bounce forward today, good form but lots on landing
Bars delay as the judges try to understand Woolford’s routine.
Reingold – UB – Georgia – blind to piked jaeger, good extended arms on catch – pak, legs together well – solid 1/2 turn on low – hits hs on high, good feet – DLO, small leg separation and hop. Good one. 9.875
Echols – VT – Missouri – yfull, small hop, usual, strong
Scott – UB – Georgia – Ray to pak, solid, good leg position on pak – van leeuwen, small leg break to start – DLO, holds onto stuck landing. Some occasional foot moments but otherwise strong. 9.900
After 2
Missouri 98.550
Georgia 98.475
Georgia picks up a little bit of ground but can’t full take advantage of rotation 2 with some mistakes of their own. Missouri many of the same landing issues on vault as Georgia had. Most found it difficult to control.
Michigan 98.375, Clemson 98.375
North Carolina 98.400, Minnesota 98.325
Michigan and Clemson underway in rotation 3
Walters – BB – Michigan – up 2nd after 9.750 for Davis – hits straddle and full turn – kickover to bhs is nicely connected, good one – split lea, a little slow into switch 1/2 but done, connects to beat jump – punch front 1/1 dmt, stuck. Very good. 9.900
Minner – FX – Clemson – rudi to loso is under control – a little off kilter on dance combination – front 2/1, very slightly underrotated but controls the step
Alabama started their vault rotation with a handspring front tuck to butt drop from Marshall and finished with a 9.975 for Ra-Akbar. So normal stuff.
Bauman – BB – Michigan – full turn, nicely done – bhs loso, hit – split jump to straddle 1/2, little lean at the end – side somi, hit, slides foot a bit at the end – switch 1/2, we have a high camera angle, so either that leap hit about 14 degrees or we can’t see anything – gainer pike, small movement
Lippeatt – FX – Clemson – front lay to rudi, hit, a bit of scraggly leg form in the air – switch to switch side 1/2, pulls it around – 1.5 to layout, good layout form, a little hesitant about whether she was going to stick or step on landing
Rotation 3 – Georgia v Missouri
Snyder – BB – Georgia – bhs loso loso is right off, final loso goes to the mat. it begins.
Jackson – FX – Missouri – double pike, good height, controls the step – switch ring to switch 1/2 to wolf full, second two elements very nice, initial ring isn’t really to ring – front tuck to double tuck, opens out well, controls step
Tomlin – BB – Georgia – candle mount, hit – switch to straddle jump, good switch, straddle looked a little hesitant – bhs bhs loso, hit, small adjustment on landing – full turn – high 1.5 dismount, controls the stick. Good. 9.875
Jahzara Ranger just stuck her double tuck beam dismount. 9.950
Tisler – FX – Missouri – front lay to rudi, strong landing – switch 1/1 to straddle 1/2, landing positions looked good there – back 15 to front lay, under control – solid. 9.900
Woolford – BB – Georgia – wolf double is good – bhs loso very strong amplitude, controls it – switch to split, pretty positions – 2/1 dmt, smallest rebound. Excellent. And it’s a 9.975. So the judges thought so too. But also…that wasn’t a stick right.
Boozer is anchoring Michigan’s beam after a Ranger 9.950 – switch to split, nice – aerial, arm wave into beat, good leg position on aerial – full turn – bhs loso, hit – gainer full, holds onto the stick. A couple tiny wavers, but a good one. 9.900.
Clark anchoring floor for Clemson – DLO, controls the front foot – front lay to front full to front tuck, stuck – tour jete 1/2 to popa to straight jump, good. 9.925. One of her lower scores for the best floor I’ve seen her do this year. Why college gym keeps you sane.
Battle – BB – Georgia – full turn, hit – split jump 1/4, secure – switch to split, solid split positions – kickover little waver into beat – bhs loso, solid. some foot position – gainer full, nice height, stuck. 9.900
Tanskanen – FX – Missouri – FTDT, very good control – back 1.5 to lay, hit, not the highest but around, slightly soft knees – 9.900
C Williams – BB – Georgia – bhs lay is secure today, some pike in the hips but more laid out than most – side somi, solid – beat to straddle 3/4, nice clear straddle position – full turn – gainer pike, stuck. And another 9.975. The layout position isn’t quite a 10 for me, even if it is worlds better than those lay-pikes that pretend to be layouts.
Horton – FX – Missouri – DLO, high, leg sep, some pike down today to hold it – hop wolf full to straddle 3/4 – front through to double back, very well controlled, good open out of it. 9.950
Scott – BB – Georgia – full turn, hit – bhs loso, secure, good height – aerial, arm wave before split jump to back handspring, broken connection – switch to split, gorgeous – fhs rudi, hop back.
Scott goes 9.725 as one judge decided to watch her combination.
Griffin – FX – Missouri – high double pike, controls the step, yes – front tuck through to double tuck, very slight landing adjustment – tour jete 1/2 to popa to popa is around well. 9.925
Valahovic anchors beam for North Carolina, full turn is nice – bhs loso, pretty back foot, secure landing – switch, short back leg, switch 1/2 position is better, connects to beat jump – 1.5 dmt, little lean to hold the stick. 9.950. A lovely routine, but I fear for North Carolina when that same routine goes 9.850 at regionals at they’re like whaaaaaa? But I’ve hit my limit on comments about their scoring because, yes yes I understand, gestures at what’s happening in Georgia.
Kara Eaker goes in exhibition for Georgia today, hits her side aerial to loso – switch 1/2 is hit – switch to split leap, smooth – gainer full is low but landed. Works for me.
Georgia putting up a beam rotation with a fall, a broken connection, and two 9.975s is beautiful nonsense worthy of Val-era UCLA.
Looks like Alabama has two misses to start their beam rotation.
We’ve got some meets going around here. Missouri leads Georgia by .125 heading to the last rotation. Going to keep it with these meets and then start watching Oklahoma/Arkansas when that’s done.
Clemson and Michigan rotation 4 has started. Lippeatt opens Clemson’s beam with 9.825.
B Clark – BB – Clemson – standing front tuck, works into beat jump – bhs loso, high, secure landing, some knee – holds the full turn – straddle jump to straddle 1/4, comfortable – rudi smt, small hop back. 9.875
Sanger – FX – Michigan – following a 9.875 leadoff for Davis – double pike, chest kind of down, mostly controls the step back – switch 1/2 to wolf full wolf full, I like the switch 1/2 position and footwork into it – back 1.5 to a struggle, has to tuck her front lay, just gets to her feet – solid double wolf after it. 9.650
Meanwhile, one judge gave JaFree back a tenth on SV so her beam is now 9.775 and Georgia trails by .125 going to the last.
Malewski – BB – Clemson – wolf double with lean leany arming around – side aerial to bhs, leans to the side to hold it, foot a little off center – switch to split, another little squeeze to fake it – gainer pike, holds stick. A journey but a hit. She’s like, “I’m German, don’t pretend that was good.” The judges are like, “We will, thanks.” 9.800.
Diaz – FX – Michigan – front 2/1, quick dance out, just slight under rotated – wolf double – rudi to loso, right to the edge but keeps it in – solid completion on dance combo. 9.925
Railey Jackson has a medium wobble on her bhs on beam to lead off for Missouri, bend at the hips, turn to the side. 9.850 sure sure.
Cesario – BB – Clemson – full turn, small adjustment – bhs loso, solid – switch 1/2, very large wobble, bend at the hips and arm wave – redoes the switch 1/2 and leans into the combination this time – 1/5 dmt hop.
Bauman – FX – Michigan – front 2/1, pretty much controls the step out – switch 1/2 to wolf full, wolf full, good clear completion – back 1.5 to layout, good rise into layout position. 9.950 wheeeeeee.
Tanskanen now back into the Missouri beam lineup. Wier out.
Kuhl – BB – Clemson – bhs bhs loso is secure – sissone, under split – beat to split ring jump, check – full turn. check – 1.5 dmt, little hop. 9.825
Walters – FX – Michigan – front 2/1, good, a little lack of control crossover slide on landing – switch 1/2 to popa to straddle is good – back 1.5 to front full, good height, controls the step. 9.900
Walsh – BB – Clemson – holds full turn well – bhs loso, small check lean on landing – kickover, works into beat quickly – beat to split ring jump, another small waver, giving away little bits but nothing more than .05s each time – stuck dmt.
Ranger – FX – Michigan – DLO, steps back OOB – switch 1/2 to popa is good – front loso to double tuck, chest a little forward, holds onto it with a lean. 9.750.
FINAL: Michigan 197.225, Clemson 196.975
Michigan pulls out the win. Would have wanted a little bit higher total given the assumed score for Ranger on floor, but not a problem result. Clemson will definitely take that score, even in the loss. Second highest of the season.
Now to the conclusion of Missouri and Georgia.
Davis finishing up beam in the fourth spot for Missouri, secure on the sheep jump landing, step back on gainer full. 9.775
Wahl – FX – Georgia – FTDT, solid position, little bounce back – front tuck through to double tuck, legs a little apart, controls the step – tour jete 1/2 to wolf full gets kind of out of control on the tour jete, pulls it around. 9.900
Kelly – BB – Missouri – Georgia has a quarter tenth lead right now – aerial to bhs, smooth – switch, a little slow into split, good positions – side aerial, hit – wolf double, solid – 1.5 dmt, little step back.
Anyway, Michigan State finished vault with two 9.975s for Zsarmani and Kellerman.
Aquino – FX – Georgia – DLO, jusssst looks like she keeps that front foot down – front tuck through to double tuck, some foot position, keeps front foot down again – switch 1/2, not quite there, good rise in wolf full, nice position, 9.925
Delay on the beam score for Kelly. Another start value separation.
Lawrence – BB – Missouri – side aerial to bhs, very good – split jump, into split 3/4, small adjustment on landing – 1.5 dmt, step forward. 9.850
One judge went 9.7 start on Kelly’s routine, the other 10.0. I get it, but also if you gave Scott’s combo but not Kelly’s…?
C Williams – FX – Georgia – DLO, excellent, controls the front foot – switch side to popa is around well – front tuck through to double tuck, also controls the step, chest a little forward? Very good.
Cat tells us she hasn’t seen any deductions. Yeah, but also you’ve never seen a deduction in a Georgia routine ever.
9.975 for Williams, her second in a row.
FINAL: Georgia 197.600, Missouri 197.275
FINAL: North Carolina 197.200, Minnesota 196.925
On to Oklahoma against Arkansas.
Scheible – VT – Oklahoma – handspring front pike 1/2, good height, little hop back
Smith – UB – Arkansas – maloney to bail, solid, small leg separations – DLO, a ltitle deep in the knees, pulls it out and gets 9.900
Estep – VT – Oklahoma – Y1.5, little step forward, bit of direction, solid. 9.900
King – UB – Arkansas – hits hs – tkatchev, solid distance, into pak, leg separation – 1/2 turn on low – hs on high looked solid – DLO, leg spearation, step back and a little adjustment to try to hold. 9.850
Mueller – VT – Oklahoma – Y1.5, not her strongest, lunge forward and more knee tucking than usual. 9.875 wayyyyyy crazy high
Campbell – UB – Arkansas – hits hs on high – tkatchev, nice feet throughout here – toe on to pak, small leg separation – 1/2 turn on low is rushed past vertical – hits hs – stalder, small hesitation, into double tuck, good stick. 9.800
Fatta – VT – Oklahoma – y1.5 is very strong, up onto her toes to try to control and then a chest lean forward. 9.925
M Price – UB – Arkansas – good hs on low – toe on to maloney to to bail, hit, small leg sep in maloney – good hs on high – FTDT, excellent foot position, stuck. 9.975. It’s the leg separation on the maloney.
After 2
Oklahoma 99.050
Arkansas 98.625
Have not yet recovered from the 9.875 for Mueller’s vault. I liked hearing, “One judge gave that a 9.9?????” in the background on the broadcast. Same.
Alabama goes 197.200 with a counting fall on beam, defeating Kentucky’s 196.675.
Rotation 3
Park – BB – Arkansas – candle mount, good – full turn, little waver – bhs loso, secure landing – switch to switch, connects and controls, tightish in the back leg – side aerial to 1.5, some legs in twist, good stick. 9.850
Murphy – FX – Oklahoma – front tuck through to double tuck, chest up, shows control – switch 1/2 to wolf full – back 1.5 to layout, good rise, controls the dance out – switch 1/1, around. 9.875
The background voices are ON ONE today. They’re just like, she’s OOB!!!! when she’s in the middle of the floor. Never stop.
Klein – BB – Arkansas – standing loso loso, solid landing, foot and knee form, but secure – switch to straddle 1/4, wobble, arm control correction – full turn, not a wobble but a little panic attack at the end – 1.5 dmt, lean forward to hold stick. 9.800
Fatta – FX – Oklahoma – front full through to 2.5, controls the rebound – tour jete 1/2 to popa – front 2/1, looked a tad under-rotated, shows control in the step. 9.850
Weaver – BB – Arkansas – bhs loso, lean to the side wobble – side aerial, holds it under control despite being off to the side a bit – straddel to double stag, good – full turn, little correction – 1.5 dmt, good stick
Wells – FX – Oklahoma – front tuck through to double tuck, bigger bounce back out of control – switch 1/2ish to wolf fullish, kind of in between landing completion there – 1.5 to layout, good rise in layout, solid shape. 9.850
Cucci – BB – Arkansas – full turn is smooth – bhs loso, right on, confident – aerial, hit – switch to split 1/2, hit – 1.5 dmt, stuck, good twisting form. That was excellent. Fab routine. 9.900. I guess she should try being more famous.
Estep – FX – Oklahoma – front lay to front 2/1, good control, around – switch 1/2 to wolf full, around – 2.5, bounce out dance out, but should be a control deduction. 9.900
Price – BB – Arkansas – full turn, good – bhs loso, holds it, doesn’t give away much of a lean – cat to front aerial, wobble lean – switch to split, solid – 2/1 dmt, good twist and stick. 9.825
Mueller – FX – Oklahoma – front tuck through to double tuck, good control, some leg separation – front lay to rudi, slightly under-rotated on rudi – tour jete 1/2 to popa, very nice, good positions. 9.900
Roberson – BB – Arkansas – beat jump to pike jump, high, good – straddle 1/2 to back tuck, chest down wobble there, foot adjustment in between – full turn, very comfortable, good – side aerial to loso, hit, arm wave correction – 1.5 dmt, hop forward. 9.775
What I like about Sydney’s commentary is that she will own being an Arkansas homer but is also willing to point things out like the foot shift in combination there.
Pawlak – FX – Oklahoma – double pike, chest up, slide back – switch 1/2 to wolf full, around – back 1.5 to front full, more of a struggle, loses some form in back 1.5 and a sideward step to control landing – switch 1/1, under turned. 9.800
After 3
Oklahoma 148.425
Arkansas 147.850
Oklahoma opening up a comfortable lead after three but will rue falling off the 198 pace with that floor rotation.
Also Michigan State just went 197.700 to beat Auburn’s 196.975.
Rotation 4
Very much thought KJ was going to headbutt Fatta at the end of her talk there.
Fatta – BB – Oklahoma – bhs loso, hit, little correction – side aerial, secure – hitch kick to switch side, angled on the split – full turn, comfortable – switch to split, good positions – bhs gainer full, some knee in bhs, good stick. And we have 9.950. So there’s that.
Klein – FX – Arkansas – front tuck through to double tuck, points for the tuck position, actual legs together, good landing – switch side 1/2 to straddle to shushunova, strong – front lay to front full, little leg separation, shows control. Nice. 9.900
Wells – BB – Oklahoma – cat leap to switch side aerial, lean wobble – full turn, checky quick step out – switch to split, hit – bhs loso, pretty foot position there stands out – check on choreography, immediate dungeon – 1.5 dmt, step forward. 9.825
Cucci – FX – Arkansas – DLO, hits under control, pikes down at the end – switch side to popa, overturns switch side some – front tuck through to double, tuck, shins apart, controls it mostly, little foot movement? And a counter-9.950 for Arkansas. With the pike down, and the over-turn, and the landing control.
Murphy – BB – Oklahoma – nice candle mount, good toe point – bhs loso, high, pretty position – aerial, smooth – full turn – beat to split ring jump, right on – gainer full, stuck. very good. It’s a night of 9.975s.
L Smith – FX – Arkansas – the theme of this routine is, “remember when old people use the telephone?” – front lay to double tuck, shows good landing control – switch side 1/2 to straddle, solid – double pike, under control, deep chest position.
We’re booing a 9.950. Arkansas has arrived. “If it was THIM, it woulda been a TIN!” Forget mic-ed up coaches, I’m here for mic-ed up drunk dads.
Estep – BB – Oklahoma – full turn, hit – bhs loso, secure landing – switch to straddle 1/4, wobble, a couple arm circles to control – cat leap to side aerial, hit – 1.5, good stick. 9.850.
F Price – FX – Arkansas – DLO, good height, bounce back – switch side to popa to popa, excellent – front full to a short creepy landing, locked leg on her already braced leg, but bounces up out of it OK. 9.775
Mueller – BB – Oklahoma – candle mount, good – full turn, check – bhs loso, hit, just a little forward – side aerial, slightly off again, check – switch to straddle 1/4, nice – 1.5 dmt, manspreads on landing, holds stick. Fought it a little through that one, so it’s a 9.900, which is a fall.
15,512 attendance. Dayum Arkansas.
L Williams – FX – Arkansas – FTDT, chest up, bounce back, some leg position – switch side to popa, good completion and foot position – back 1.5 to front full, step out, keeps it in bounds. 9.875
If you’re a nerd like me (which, if you’re still reading, you are), Arizona State went 49.000 on all four rotations today.
Torrez – BB – Oklahoma – wolf jump, good – side aerial to loso, very large break, bends over at the hips past horizontal – switch to split, another check – gainer full, strong as always, stuck.
Roberson – FX – Arkansas – DLO, chest up, controls the landing – switch side, over-turns by a bit into popa – her choreography is shushing the deduction for leap precision – front loso to double tuck, chest a little forward, keeps front foot down on step back. 9.975 to troll the crowd. A couple things to take in that one.
FINAL:
Oklahoma 197.925
Arkansas 197.500
Oklahoma right about on their NQS, so nothing much to report there. Arkansas with a huge total, improving their standing in their fight with Missouri.
Anyone else feel like these last few meets of the regular season have lost a little oomph with the new NQS? I’m pro making all the meets matter more, but in doing so, there’s not the same urgency in these last meets to get The Score to knock a lower number off the NQS picture. It’s just…throw it on the pile with the rest of them. Another meet happened.
