Beginning this Monday, teams will be ranked offically by RQS (What’s RQS?), so here’s a look at where the RQS picture currently sits, including where teams would be ranked if RQS were in place now and what RQS/ranking teams can reach based on scores from their next meets.
For reference, these are the RQSs required last season for a series of benchmarks if you’re feverishly watching what a certain team might need:
Advance to regionals – 195.420 RQS
Seeded #3 at regionals – 196.380 RQS
Seeded #2 at regionals – 196.845 RQS
Seeded #1 at regionals – 197.355 RQS
Scores in bold will be part of the six scores used for final RQS and can no longer be removed because the team in question has fewer than six meets remaining (or fewer than three road meets remaining).
1. Oklahoma – 197.535 |
|
Road Score 1: | 198.125 |
Road Score 2: | 198.050 |
Road Score 3: | 197.550 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 198.150 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.525 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.425 |
RQS: | 197.535 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.880
Oklahoma has that one low score hanging around after last week but also six opportunities left to drop it with the rest of the scores already looking solid. There is an outside chance that either LSU or UCLA could move up on OU’s #1 ranking this weekend, but Oklahoma can ensure retaining #1 on Monday by scoring just 197.100, which shouldn’t be much to ask.
2. LSU – 197.475 |
|
Road Score 1: | 198.075 |
Road Score 2: | 197.375 |
Road Score 3: | 197.250 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 198.175 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.450 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 197.225 |
RQS: | 197.475 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.665
LSU does have a chance to move as high as #1 after the weekend if the Tigers produce another big number and Oklahoma throws in another weak one, though it’s not the most likely outcome. LSU is already guaranteed to stay at least #3 but is quite close with UCLA, so it would take a 197.925 for LSU to ensure staying ahead of UCLA.
3. UCLA – 197.460 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.750 |
Road Score 2: | 197.625 |
Road Score 3: | 197.300 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.950 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.425 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 197.200 |
RQS: | 197.460 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.610
UCLA also has a very outside chance to move up #1 after this weekend, or a somewhat more realistic chance to move up to #2. Whether UCLA actually has a chance to move ahead of LSU with a strong result against Oregon State on Sunday will depend on the score LSU puts up against Georgia on Friday, so we’ll know more at that point.
The Bruins do have a solid buffer over Utah, meaning that it will take just a 197.250 for UCLA to ensure staying ahead of Utah.
4. Utah – 197.320 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.550 |
Road Score 2: | 197.550 |
Road Score 3: | 196.975 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.700 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.450 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 197.075 |
RQS: | 197.320 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.465
Utah has a few lower scores hanging around than do LSU and UCLA (that road score still in the 196s, that home score at 197.0), so the peak RQS is not going to be as high. There is an outside possibility that Utah can catch UCLA this weekend, but it would take a 197.675 for Utah to have a chance to tie, and that’s only if UCLA throws in a score of 197.200 or lower.
Utah is quite likely to be able to fend off Florida, and can guarantee staying top 4 with a 197.075 this weekend.
5. Florida – 197.130 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.400 |
Road Score 2: | 196.950 |
Road Score 3: | 196.325 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 198.150 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.850 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 197.125 |
RQS: | 197.130 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 197.335
Florida is at home this weekend and will therefore not have a chance to get rid of the 196 road scores, stunting the maximum RQS it can reach. The Gators do still have the slimmest of chances of catching Utah, but it would take a score in the 198s along with a low result from Utah.
Note the 197.400 in bold, which Florida is now guaranteed to keep around with just two road meets remaining. It’s not a bad score, but it’s not exactly the kind of score that’s going to catch the teams ranked above.
Florida is already guaranteed to stay at least #5 in the rankings, so the score this week is about improving the home totals and positioning to make a real move once one of the road scores can be dropped again.
6. Alabama – 196.570 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.075 |
Road Score 2: | 196.725 |
Road Score 3: | 195.675 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.000 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.925 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.525 |
RQS: | 196.570 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.850
RQS is temporarily friendly to Alabama by bumping the team up to #6, though Alabama can go no higher than 6th after this week. Since Michigan has the higher maximum RQS after the next meet, the Wolverines will decide how things play out for the time being.
In addition to Michigan, Alabama is potentially vulnerable to Oregon State if this week turns out to be a bad one (as well as Washington and Arkansas if this week turns out to be a really bad one), but Alabama holds the advantage and can ensure staying ahead of Oregon State with a 196.650 and ahead of Washington and Arkansas by breaking the 196 barrier.
7. Michigan – 196.480 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.775 |
Road Score 2: | 196.525 |
Road Score 3: | 194.975 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.550 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 197.250 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.875 |
RQS: | 196.480 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.995
Michigan heads to a road meet this weekend with a juicy opportunity to drop that 194.975 and move up the rankings. With a 196.850, Michigan would move ahead of Alabama and sit 6th no matter what Alabama scores.
If things go poorly, Michigan may be vulnerable to Oregon State as well, needing a 196.400 to ensure staying ahead. There is also a chance that Michigan could get caught by Washington, Arkansas, and Kentucky, though that would mean Michigan scored in the 195s and has bigger problems.
8. Washington – 196.365 |
|
Road Score 1: | 197.025 |
Road Score 2: | 196.525 |
Road Score 3: | 196.250 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.000 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.325 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 195.725 |
RQS: | 196.365 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.625
It’s possible for Washington to move up this week but would require either Michigan or Alabama going sub-196 (in addition to a great meet from Washington), so this week will be more about fending off the likes of Kentucky, Arkansas, Denver, and Boise State. To make sure Washington stays ahead of all of those teams, the magic score is 196.875. Oregon State has the higher peak RQS after this week and has a chance to move ahead regardless of what Washington does.
9. Kentucky – 196.360 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.950 |
Road Score 2: | 196.700 |
Road Score 3: | 196.700 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 196.375 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.075 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 195.950 |
RQS: | 196.360 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.560
Kentucky doesn’t have quite as low of a score to drop as some others and therefore may find itself dropping behind Oregon State and Arkansas regardless of performance this week (though also has a chance to move up on Michigan and Washington if circumstances allow). Fending off Denver and Boise State will be another goal, requiring a 196.200.
10. Arkansas – 196.270 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.350 |
Road Score 2: | 196.150 |
Road Score 3: | 195.575 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.175 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.750 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.525 |
RQS: | 196.270 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.590
Arkansas is in line to drop a slightly lower score than Kentucky is dropping, meaning Arkansas does have a higher peak RQS for next week and therefore a chance to guarantee moving ahead of its conference rival, though it would take a 197.050 to make it a lock. In Arkansas’s case, fending off all those teams ranked #12 and below requires at least a 196.275 this week.
10. Oregon State – 196.270 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.500 |
Road Score 2: | 196.300 |
Road Score 3: | 194.850 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.300 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.975 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.725 |
RQS: | 196.270 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.760
Oregon State has the big opportunity to move out of this ranking section this weekend, going on the road to UCLA with a 194.850 still to drop. OSU can guarantee moving ahead of several schools after this week given the following scores:
Washington –196.650
Arkansas – 196.475
Kentucky – 196.325
12. Auburn – 196.190 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.500 |
Road Score 2: | 196.375 |
Road Score 3: | 194.875 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.000 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.625 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.575 |
RQS: | 196.190 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.275
Auburn is at home this weekend, meaning the 194.875 will have to wait another week to be removed and the maximum possible RQS right now is not particularly high. Theoretically, Oregon State and Arkansas are vulnerable to Auburn, but it’s not super likely. Plus, Denver, Boise State, and Arizona State all have higher maximums and could move up regardless of Auburn’s score.
Nebraska is the other possible challenger, but Auburn can guarantee staying ahead of Nebraska with a score of 196.775.
13. Boise State – 196.115 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.625 |
Road Score 2: | 196.400 |
Road Score 3: | 195.475 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 196.875 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.225 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 195.850 |
RQS: | 196.115 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.395
Boise State can entertain at least a sliver of hope of moving ahead of anyone as high as Washington in 8th, but BSU is also vulnerable to Denver (higher peak RQS) and Arizona State and Nebraska depending on how things go. To ensure staying ahead of Arizona State, it will take 196.400 and to ensure staying ahead of Nebraska, it will take 196.050.
14. Nebraska – 196.110 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.175 |
Road Score 2: | 195.675 |
Road Score 3: | 195.550 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 196.875 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.850 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.300 |
RQS: | 196.110 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.225
Like Auburn, Nebraska is somewhat handcuffed by being at home this weekend and being unable to drop those road 195s. Nebraska can still entertain challenging Auburn and Boise State but could also be passed by Denver and Arizona State even if scoring a season-high.
15. Denver – 196.055 |
|
Road Score 1: | 195.975 |
Road Score 2: | 195.775 |
Road Score 3: | 195.050 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 196.800 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.750 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.725 |
RQS: | 196.055 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.405
Denver has a much better chance of moving up this week because that 195.050 has a chance to go. With a season high, Denver could challenge anyone from Washington down and will expect to move out of 15th with anything nearing a normal meet.
The lowest-hanging fruit would be Nebraska (195.925 to pass) and Auburn (196.150 to pass), which Denver could do regardless of what those teams score.
16. Georgia – 196.025 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.150 |
Road Score 2: | 196.125 |
Road Score 3: | 194.525 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 197.000 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.725 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 196.600 |
RQS: | 196.025 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.105
At home, Georgia will not have much of a chance to move up this week (Denver is the only possible team UGA can catch and Denver would have to score pretty low). Georgia could also be vulnerable to Arizona State as well as Cal if those two teams have good weeks and UGA does not score higher than 196.600.
17. Arizona State – 195.950 |
|
Road Score 1: | 196.475 |
Road Score 2: | 196.250 |
Road Score 3: | 195.400 |
Home/Road Score 1: | 196.800 |
Home/Road Score 2: | 196.575 |
Home/Road Score 3: | 195.050 |
RQS: | 195.950 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.300
ASU gets the chance to drop a 195.050 this week and, with another 196, could make an assault on some of the teams in the lower teens since Arizona State’s maximum possible RQS after this week is higher than Auburn, Nebraska, or Georgia’s. It could take big scores in some cases, but it is possible. Moving ahead of Georgia would take just 195.850, which seems a pretty reasonable goal.
18. George Washington – 195.735 | |

22. Cal – 195.565 |

Home/Road Score 3: | 194.850 |
RQS: | 195.565 |
Maximum possible RQS after next meet: 196.040
With those 194s still to get rid of, Cal will be looking at catching many of the schools currently ranked in the higher teens this week. Ensuring moving past BYU requires just 195.725. The others schools will be more difficult if they record season-highs, but it’s unlikely that everyone will do that at the same time.
23. Stanford – 195.525 |

Bless you for this, Spencer.
It won’t happen because UGA will likely drop that 194 road score when the compete “away” in Augusta at the Elevate the Stage meet or at a cracky-scores Utah meet, but it’s kind of interesting to imagine:
Seed 6 – Michigan (I know this week it’s not true but… )
Seed 7 – Alabama (2nd Regional seed AND host)
Seed 18 – UGA
Would be fun times. 🙂
Though like I said, highly unlikely UGA will be ranked that low in the end. But the Michigan-Alabama clash seems very likely.
In the words of Bill Walton, “PLEASE!”
Anon – Utah has this reputation for “cracky scores” but if you look at the data, you’ll see that just isn’t true: https://roadtonationals.com/results/charts/allteams. Utah is actually scoring *lower* at home on average than they are on the road (by half a tenth).
You want to talk crack scoring? Let’s talk about Florida and Georgia, who are both scoring MORE THAN A FULL POINT higher at home than on the road.
We’re all entitled to our opinions, but let’s base these discussions in facts and data.
Oh please, get a life.
I was referring to the fact that when Utah/UGA meet in their season ender the scores usually get out of whack crazy.
If Utah fans don’t take a chill pill I might start thinking they’re crazy enough to actually think the Orange Blob is a good president.
Utah fans are The Craziest. By far my least favorite. That said, I have to give them kudos for loving their team so much. Many teams would be lucky to have such support and it’s great for NCAA gymnastics as a whole.
Have you watched the Georgia meets? The 194 opener which had 3 beam falls and 2 floor falls (Gigi tore her Achilles) brings down their away meet average. They only have 3 away meets; thus, the full point lower average makes sense. It’s not like the average can be explained by judge crack.
Utah fans need to chill.
Well it will be senior night when Georgia is in Utah, so you probably have a point. I think all schools put crack in the judge’s water before senior night. May even be in their contract
My fave senior night 10 is still Reagan Corville (sp – plus autocorrect) getting one for her bent knees and non-stuck vault. Jessie Jordan also got a 10 for a similar non-perfect vault right before.
How did you calculate maximum possible RQS after next meet?
math and an Excell spreadsheet 🙂 Oh I guess you mean what score is he using to replace the score they would drop? That would be the highest score they currently have achieved. Since you have to drop your highest score, if they score above that, the new high becomes the high score dropped. So for the next week the highest score you could possibly average in is the one you would have to drop this week.
thanks! Got it now!
Am also laughing that Arizona managed to not be last – which really sheds a light and the back end of the tunnel.
