I am definitely ready for this meet. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you I am not ready. I am ready.

Eichman is on vault and beam today for UCLA. Nola Matthews and Webster-Longin out completely. Alipio is on three events.

Rotation 1

Tucker – VT – MSU – Y1.5, lands a bit short, crossover step back, some knees and direction. 9.750

Rosen – UB – UCLA – good first hs – toe on to maloney to pak, good maloney, small leg break in pak – solid 1/2 turn finish on low bar – hits hs on high – DLO is a big problem, short landing, lots of form, looks like knee touched the mat in lunge forward. 9.525, so they didn’t say knee down.

Lord Marquart – VT – MSU – lovely position on y1.5 in the air, lunge forward. 9.775

Alipio – UB – UCLA – arches hs on low but brings it back – maloney, bigger leg separation, connected to bail, nice position – hits hs on high – giant full to toe tucked 1/2, stick, chest forward. 9.875 is high.

Duplissis – VT – MSU – nice stick on y1.5, slightly soft knees, slight separation on block, but good direction and control. 9.900

Barros – UB – UCLA – pak, small leg break – hits hs on low – van leeuwen, solid – short hs on high – DLO, little hop back, light piking at the end. 9.900 with a 9.95/9.85 split.

Smith – VT – MSU – Y1.5, good form and dynamics, lunge forward. 9.825

Sumanasekera – UB – UCLA – stalder shap to pak, good height – some body position rushing in 1/2 turn on low – a bit of hip angle on her leg together handstand – FTDT is very strong, good stick. 9.875

Zsarmani – VT – MSU – y1.5, also very good form and direction, another bigger hop forward. 9.875

Sullivan – UB – UCLA – toe on to tkatchev to pak, hit, leg separation in pak – 1/2 turn a little past – good hs on high, “statement handstand” – DLO, a little over excited on that with an arm circle hop forward. 9.750

Kellerman – VT – MSU – handspring pike 1/2 is back, small hop back, otherwise strong. 9.925

Chiles – UB – UCLA – hits hs on high – piked tkatchev to pak, excellent – 1/2 turn on low probably within 10 degrees? – good cast hs on high – DLO, stuck. Very good one. Watch out. 9.950 – fine, but now let’s talk about a judge giving Barros and Chiles the same score. That’s not ranking routines.

Halsell exhibition vault for MSU, solid full with hop back. Eichman bars UCLA, pak with leg separation – van leeuwen hit – short hs – DLO, legs and a little pike, hop back.

After 1
UCLA 49.350
Michigan State 49.300

Michigan State pretty hoppy on vault except for Duplissis but kept it close enough after 1, UCLA having to count the dismount issue for Sullivan to keep the score normal.

Rotation 2

Sumanasekera – VT – UCLA – yfull, clean in the air, tries to hold the end and ends up arm circling and leaning forward. 9.775

Howard – UB – MSU – muscles first hs a little – church to overshoot, solid, slight form – a little short on these hs but finishes giant full on top, into double tuck, stuck

Eichman – VT – UCLA – Yfull, also fine, small rebound with slight pike and then a step after trying to control. 9.750

Tucker – UB – MSU – hits first hs – toe on to maloney, form in the air, barely fingertip catches it and can’t keep going, has to extra swing a billion times on high to try to keep it going, just the same as a fall at this point – bail, nice form – toe pike 1/2, stuck with chest down. 9.000

Rosen – VT – UCLA – Y1.5, hits it with a hop to the side, knees in the air. 9.875

N Smith – UB – MSU – arches first hs, brings it back – maloney to pak is hit, little leg form in maloney – 1/2 turn on low is past vertical – hits hs on high – DLO, bounce back and then another arm circle step. But hit it. 9.725

Jenkins – VT – UCLA – Y1.5, medium step forward, some leg separation, solid. 9.825

Cosman – UB – MSU – short first hs on low – toe on to maloney to pak, lovely form, legs together – hits hs on high – giant full to double tuck, chest forward and a step, should be .150 for that. 9.725

Sullivan – VT – UCLA – Y1.5, strong, good direction, hop forward, little leg separation on repulsion. 9.850

Zsarmani – UB – MSU – toe on to maloney to pak, smoothly connected – DLO is clean in the air, but hesitant landing with a step back

Chiles – VT – UCLA – DTY, pretty much identical to last week, sticks again. Leg crossing to take if you want again. 9.975

Kellerman – UB – MSU – good first hs – jaeger, solid hit – bail, lovely legs together – short hs on high – DLO, good open hips, stuck. 9.875

Anyimi exhibition for UCLA yfull, sticks with some direction. Abney shows a Ray and a toe full to double tuck stuck, so…lineup?

After 2
UCLA 98.650
Michigan State 98.275

UCLA opens up a lead after Michigan State has some issues on bars. Not a counting fall this time, but Tucker had a miss and then Smith struggled through her routine. And Cosman also only got 9.725.

Rotation 3

Duplissis – BB – MSU – bhs bhs loso is hit, small check, creative camera cut to the back of a head during that series – full turn – beat to split jump 3/4, a bit under split – 1.5 dmt, holds onto stick with a lean forward at the hips. 9.750

Rosen – FX – UCLA – double tuck, very strong, chest up, controlled step – double pike, also controls the step, chest a little farther down – switch ring to switch 1/2 to wolf full, pulls it around just – back 1.5 to lay, under control. 9.850

Abney – BB – MSU – wolf double, smooth – bhs loso series, a little tight but secure – switch, check before split leap – beat – side aerial to 1.5 tucked, stuck. Wondering if they give the switch to split leap. They do. 9.825.

Alipio – FX – UCLA – double pike, hop to present stays in, chest up solidly – switch ring to switch 1.2 to wolf full, well executed – wolf double, looks around as we see if from the next state over – 1.5 to front lay, also under control, lower amplitude and some knees. 9.850

Tucker – BB – MSU – cat leap to aerial, a little tentative into bhs but keeps moving – beat to split 3/4, under control, straddly looking – cat leap to side aerial, keeps it under control, no check despite foot being a little off – full turn – gainer full, stuck. A couple tight things, covered well. 9.875

Barros – FX – UCLA – 1.5 to lay, good control – front tuck through to double tuck, also shows control but chest down farther – shushunova – switch 1/2 to wolf full is comfortable. 9.900

Smith – BB – MSU – bhs loso, right on, good direction – beat to straddle 1/2, squeezes onto it – full turn – double tuck, stuck. Excellent. 9.925

Sumanasekera – FX – UCLA – DLO, a little shy, pikes at the end with a step forward – swtich ring to switch 1/2 to wolf full well done – 1.5 to front lay hit well, some leg position in the 1.5. 9.850

Trostel – BB – MSU – full turn, good – switch to straddle, good positions – falls on the onodi – resumes with bhs loso, secure – gainer full, stuck. 9.100

Sullivan – FX – UCLA – DLO, very well controlled, good one – tour jete 1/2 to popa, high and solid positions but out of control on landing with fairly large hop to the side – front tuck through to double tuck, comfortable as well, small slide back front foot. 9.825

Cosman – BB – MSU – wolf double – side aerial to bhs, hits it, small waver and some knee form – switch to korbut, smooth – 1.5 dismount, holds stick well, bit of leg position. 9.900

Chiles – FX – UCLA – DLO, legs together, comfortable landing – tour jete 1/2 to wolf full, around clearly – front tuck through to double tuck, chest up, under control – moerz shushunova to finish. Very strong. She’s having a real “home meet 40” so far. 10.000 for this one.

After 3
UCLA 148.100
Michigan State 147.550

UCLA uses the Chiles factor to extend the lead on Michigan State after three. Michigan State through a solid beam, dropping the mistake. UCLA was overall kind of…fine…on floor, everyone with about one clear error, and then Chiles happened.

Rotation 4

Rosen – BB – UCLA – switch to split, hit – beat to onodi, hits hers – bhs loso, very solid – full turn, check walking out of it – 1.5 dmt is low, under-rotated with a step back. 9.775

Lebster – FX – MSU – rudi to loso, good amplitude and control – side aerial straddle jump – front 2/1, a little under-rotated but controls the step forward – switch side 1/2 to popa. 9.875

Sullivan – BB – UCLA – full turn – aerial to loso series, begins to wobble, pulls it back with probably just a .05 check, knee position in loso – onodi party today, hers with a wobble – switch to beat, hit – 1.5 dismount, a little under with a lean. 9.775

Cosman – FX – MSU – 2.5 to front tuck, comfortable – switch to tour jete 1/2, under 180 on the tour jete – back 1.5 to front full, landed solidly – just low on amplitude, doesn’t really rise – wolf double, comfortable. 9.850

Sumanasekera – BB – UCLA – full turn, nice – bhs loso, love the rise in the loso – aerial to beat, some front knee in aerial, well connected to beat – split jump to split ring, bad angle to see, but I think fine? – 1.5 dismount, some leg position and a hop. 9.825

Is there therapy specifically for having to watch entire beam rotations from a head-on view?

Duplissis – FX – MSU – piked full in landing is out of control with a step back OOB, good position in the air – switch side 1/2 to straddle – back 1.5 to lay, kind of large on the lunge but OK. No OOB taken and a 9.775. I see…

Eichman – BB – UCLA – bhs loso, secure – cat leap to side somi, well done – beat, slow connection before switch 1/2 – front tuck full dmt, some legs, hop. 9.825

Ortiz – FX – MSU – FTDT, just to her feet but chest down and a hop forward – front tuck through to double tuck, same, chest down landing and a hop forward – switch side to popa is comfortable –

Chiles – BB – UCLA – bhs loso, secure landing – cat leap to switch side, lean forward check to hold it – full turn, good – side aerial, solid – 2/1, strong stick. 9.950 and one judge went 10, which is…she wobbled on the switch side

39.875 for Chiles, 19th all time.

Tucker – FX – MSU – rudi to loso, right into the corner precisely – front 2/1, excellent control – switch 1.2 to popa to knee – good straddle – 9.925

Alipio – BB – UCLA – full turn, solid – bhs bhs loso, great foot positions throughout, stands out – side aerial, comfortable – split leap to switch, leans through a little into beat jump – gainer tuck full, good stick. 9.950

Smith – FX – MSU – excellent FTDT landing, good chest position, controls the step – switch side 1/2 to straddle jump – front tuck through to double tuck, chest up, little rebound. 9.925

FINAL
UCLA 197.425
Michigan State 196.900

A solid result for UCLA, huge day for Chiles, though their peer teams went 198s this week, and some shakiness in the early parts of lineups didn’t measure up to that level. And they didn’t get the “everything is 9.925 or better” code of points sent up to this meet.

Michigan State not able to pull a reversal on UCLA in this year’s dual, but a huge improvement on the first couple meets. This is more what we expect from this team. Probably not at the level of their very best squads of recent years, but still should be quite competitive.
