RQS season approaches. Gird your loins. In preparation for this most hallowed of unnecessarily complicated seasons beginning next Monday, this is a breakdown of where all the teams currently stand in the RQS picture.
For a refresher (or just a fresher) on how RQS works, please see the RQS Explained page.
Note: A handful of significant teams still don’t have enough meets for RQS as of today, so the current RQS rankings found at the bottom of each team’s table will overstate the actual position of many for the time being. Scores in bold are guaranteed to be included among the six and can no longer be bumped out.
I’ve included my RQS Calculator (Excel file) here for download if you’d like to play around with it yourself to input scores as they come in or check potential scores to see how they would change the rankings. (HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY.) Reader Kaitlyn also has some excellent color-coded Google spreadsheets on team averages and home/away event scores and RQS calculation if you’d like to check those out.

The top three teams are in perfectly fine shape and could basically coast for the rest of the regular season and still be comfortable getting a #1 seed at a regional, at least if that were their ultimate goal. The major difference among the three at this point is the road scores, accounting for Oklahoma’s superiority and which Florida will have to pick up to challenge the other two.
For next Monday’s rankings, Oklahoma is already guaranteed to retain the #1 ranking, but Florida could move up on LSU.

The Bruins don’t have enough scores for an RQS yet, but with a two-meet weekend coming up, they’ll have a chance to both fill out the set of six scores and drop that ugly 195, setting up a much more comfortable RQS scenario than we’ve seen for this team since probably 2012. A weekend average of 197.000 would put UCLA around 197 in RQS as well and comfortably into 4th for now.

Because of that weekend of 195s, Alabama currently sits behind Utah on average. The Tide would be ahead of Utah in RQS, however, as a result of dropping one of those 195s and being able to count more 197s than Utah can. Utah has just the one very high score so far this year, which gets dropped. With another 195 still to drop, Alabama is also more likely to increase its RQS this coming weekend.

The worry for Michigan is this counting 196.475, which going by recent precedent is not a score befitting a top-10 team. Expect Michigan to move up once those 195s go away, but with just two road meets remaining, the scores in those meets need to be rather high to make up for that 196.4.

Georgia’s total is fairly misleading because that 193 is still being counted as a road score, so expect the GymDogs’ RQS to increase quite a bit after this Friday’s away meet, barring disaster. Of greater concern may be those scores nestling around the 196.8s that do not compare favorably to Kentucky’s best three numbers, which will be crucial in the race to make the evening session at SECs this year that increasingly looks like it will come down to these two teams.

That road-score scenario is even more extreme for Southern Utah, as well as for Washington below. With four road meets remaining out of 6, Southern Utah will have to prove the ability to get 196s on the road to have a chance at maintaining this type of ranking. There’s even more urgency in that regard for Washington with just three road meets remaining out of 5 total.

Missouri is one of those bunched-up teams where all the scores are fairly similar, meaning they’re unlikely to move up significantly in a given week because the ceiling is quite low. The best they can do this week is drop the 195.500 in favor of the current high score, 196.225, which is a relatively marginal increase.

Division III teams are given RQSs here because that’s the standard by which all the teams are ranked, but for their regionals, all eligible teams will participate in either the NCGA East or West regionals with the top three in each advancing as a full team to NCGA nationals.

Ugh Stanford. It makes me sad because I just want to see them kill it for the rest of the year and at least make nationals.
Stanford could use a trip to Gainesville for a nice road score and perhaps a few 10s for Price. Too bad they aren’t going there. 🙂
@Anon —
Ummm, they were at the UCLA 10-fest last weekend. It didn’t exactly turn out great for them.
I scrolled through the bottom third and misread “UW-Whitewater” as “UW-Whatever” just fyi
As a numbers geek, I’m in heaven. Thank you!!
Minnesota’s Road and Home/Road Scores are a little mixed up on here (one of the 194.9s was at home this week, which pushes the 193.375 to a Road Score). It doesn’t change their overall score but does emphasize how much they need some hit road meets coming up. They really can’t pull this “we finally hit bars so let’s blow beam instead” crap again.
Seconding the amazingness of this. Thank you!!
Downloaded it and caught a few possible errors while I was going through crosschecking with RTN to mark scores as home or road. Flipped digits in one of the Auburn road scores (changing a 195.725 to a 195.275), as well as a phantom score for Kent State (RTN has only 5 meets listed, missing the 194.175 score).
Thanks for the corrections!
I wish Kent could just get it together.
I’m probably the only one who thinks this, but I hope Stanford misses out on regionals. I highly doubt it will happen, but I would much rather see a team with coaches and an administration who truly WANTS it and cares to make it. Stanford has underwhelmed so many years and they have a roster full of talent. I feel bad for the senior class and Ebee because I really like them as individual athletes, but I just can’t seem to ever cheer for this team. The school doesn’t seem to care at all about gymnastics — their social media and outreach is one of the worst amongst the power 5 teams, they provide disappointing access to meet video/scores (thankfully, the PAC 12 has helped with video), and it appears they are completely fine with a program that underperforms (and with rumors of questionable coaching practices).
Imagine if Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Utah, UCLA, OU, etc. were sitting in 36th place right now — a year after being a 3rd seed at regionals. The comments about firing the coach would be nonstop.
Also, the “academic” argument doesn’t matter here — Michigan, UCLA, and Cal have high academic standards and they seem to be doing just fine.
You are NOT the only one who thinks this. I agree and I am less confident than BBS is about Stanford’s getting to regionals.
It really bothers me that people call Stanford’s peaking late a “strategy” when it really seems to be a lack of coaching effort. Everyone thought Stanford’s strategy paid off last year at regionals, but Kristen Smyth just got lucky because Michigan screwed up beam. Had Michigan even one less wobble on beam, Stanford would have missed nationals and then it wouldn’t have looked so strategic. I also think Stanford might benefit from a coaching change – then maybe the girls would want to be there for academics AND gymnastics rather than putting up with the gymnastics to get a top-notch degree.
