As we head into this one, Cal is now tied with Utah in third place with a 197.645 NQS and needs to score anything better than 197.125 today to retain sole possession of third. Cal can’t catch #2 LSU this week but could set themselves up to pass next week by scoring something in the relative season-high, 198.0 vicinity today.
UCLA, meanwhile, has been dumped down to 13th in the NQS standings so does need something good out of this one to erase last week’s 196.975. In terms of minimal goals, just a 197.075 would put UCLA back up ahead of Arkansas and Missouri and into 11th. After that, a 197.475 would put UCLA back up ahead of Denver and in the top 10.
All women’s college basketball coaches dress either like a New Jersey dog psychic or the person in the book group with the worst comments.
Rotation 1
Lee – VT – UCLA – yfull, nice stick, we’ll see bigger, but nothing on landing. 9.900
Lauzon – UB – Cal – toe on to maloney to pak, smooth, nice – misses her toes on toe on but steps up onto low bar instead with a bit of form – FTDT, small hop back. 9.875 is a high start
Irvine – VT – UCLA – ro full on back pike – chest a bit down with a crossover step forward, and another small step. 9.750
Cesario – UB – Cal – blind to jaeger to overshoot, good amplitude – strong final cast hs on high – DLO, step back. 9.875
Rosen – VT – UCLA – y1.5, hit, stiffer landing with a medium hop forward, some soft knees. 9.875, also a lot here with the knees and the hop
Li – UB – Cal – good first hs – blind to jaeger, high – hit hs on high – pak, good legs together position – a bit shy on final cast hs – giant full to double tuck, good stick. 9.925
Campbell – VT – UCLA – struggles on her yfull today – off direction and landed chest forward with a hop. Odd. 9.750
Frazier – UB – Cal – maloney to pak, hit – 1/2 turn on low – a bit tight on a handstand – DLO, very nice stick. 9.950.
Reed – VT – UCLA – y1.5, pretty large lunge forward. 9.800
Perea – UB – Cal – good first hs – toe on to pak, clean – hits hs on low – van leeuwen, legs together – DLO, little hop forward. 9.950 with a non-stick. So that’s what’s happening.
Harris – VT – UCLA – y1.5, kind of deep landing with a hop forward. 9.800
Williams – UB – maloney to pak, clean – 1/2 turn on low – DLO, stuck. Good. I mean, they went 9.950 no-stick for Perea, so we’ll see. 9.950 as well.
After 1:
Cal 49.650
UCLA 49.125
UCLA on just 49.125 for vault. Seemed like they were on a solid track and then Campbell vaulting short threw them, and both Reed and Harris had a lot on landing. Cal very clean on bars, scoring started in a high place for Lauzon on 9.875 and then there was nowhere to go. Lots of 9.950 bunching there. I didn’t think it was their most verticaliest handstand day, but they had sticks from Li, Frazier, and Williams, which hasn’t all been happening at the same time lately.
Elsewhere, Oregon State just went 49.525 on bars with a 9.975 for Carey.
Rotation 2
Williams – VT – Cal – clean yfull in the air, small bounce and then a little bonus movement. 9.825
Campbell – UB – UCLA – hits first hs – maloney to bail, hits vertical – good cast hs on high – blind to double front, cowboy, stick. Good one.
9.950 with a 10 from one judge. I…agree with Chae’s expression. She’s like, “I know my bars isn’t a 10. What is this.”
Mayhew – VT – Cal – y1.5, short landing, step back and knees in the air. 9.800
Anyimi – UB – UCLA – blind to piked jaeger to overshoot, good catch – shy on cast hs on high – FTDT, step back. 9.825
Cesario – VT – Cal – yfull, big height but comes in a little chest forward with a hop. 9.850
Rosen – UB – UCLA – maloney to pak, smooth – hits 1/2 turn on low – shy on hs on high – DLO, a little low on amplitude but gets it around, small hop up in place and some leg separation in the air. 9.900
Frazier – VT – Cal – DTY, hits it, good power, pretty large on the step back. But they still go 9.900, so just the tenth for the step and nothing else.
Frazier – UB – UCLA – small back position on first hs – clean maloney to pak – toe circle up to high – DLO, comes up short, chest down with a hop forward. 9.825
Lauzon – VT – Cal – y1.5, good height, small hop forward. 9.900
Esparza – UB – UCLA – maloney to pak, good – tight hs on low – van leeuwen – legs together – DLO, magics a stick there somehow despite getting deep in the knees. And 9.950 with that landing a couple tight handstands.
Silvers – VT – Cal – Y1.5, solid hit – more leg form on the block with a straddle on the vault, hop to the side. 9.875, so one judge only took for the landing.
Harris – UB – UCLA – Ray, good – hits hs on high – bail, very crisp – hits hs on high – giant full, good finish to DLO, hop back. I think we all, including Selena, knew that it was going to be a 10 if she stuck. 9.950
So UCLA gets some tenths back with 49.575 on bars, a good rotation but also kind of their normal and then just…the bars scoring in this meet. Cal will take a 49.350 on vault with no sticks.
After 2
Cal 99.000
UCLA 98.700

Liz and Jim angling for that sweet-sweet Costco sponsorship.
Broadcast thinks UCLA went 49.620 on bars, which is not a score.
Rotation 3
Lee – BB – UCLA – aerial to split jump, nice – bhs loso, very small lean correction – switch to straddle, good height – full turn – gainer full, stuck. And we’re starting on 9.950
Williams – FX – Cal – front lay to rudi, like the rise into that rudi from the layout – attitude turn, chef’s kiss – sissone to split ring 1/2 – back 1.5 to front lay, under control. 9.875
Rosen – BB – UCLA – switch to split to stag ring, larger wobble, leg up to horizontal – aerial, hit – bhs loso, secure – full turn – 1.5 dismount, shuffle forward. 9.825
Kane – FX – Cal – front full to rudi, solid, little bit of legs at the end – switch side 1/2 to wolf jump, a good leap combo choice – back 1.5 to solid layout, split leap. 9.925
Andres – BB – UCLA – beat to switch 1/2, small lean correction – gainer loso, hit, just a little ginger on landing – kickover, holds it into korbut – full turn – 2/1, a little short, almost covers it, ends up with step forward. 9.825
Cesario – FX – Cal – back 1.5 to front full, solid – switch to switch ring 1/2, good ring, lower front leg – double tuck, good height, bit of a rebound. 9.900
Campbell – BB – UCLA – wolf, hit – bhs loso, arms quickly down to cover – split leap, some back leg lowness, into switch 1/2 – split to straddle 1/4 – gainer full, holds landing. Campbell really is the star of the meet so far, with that bars score reaction and staying on beam for the whole time. Secure one, just some short splits. Or not 9.925.
Mayhew – FX – Cal – front 2/1 to front pike, controls the back foot – switch ring to switch 1/2, good – back 1.5 to front full, also shows control. Just some soft knee moments here and there. 9.925
Esparza – BB – UCLA – full turn – little wobble, keeps moving into bhs, another small check – switch 1/2, secure – split leap to switch to split, lower back leg in first one, solid landings – gainer full, stuck. 9.900
Lauzon – FX – Cal – front 2/1 to front tuck, great form, little rebound forward but looks like she controlled the back foot – switch ring to switch 1/2, pretty – back 1.5 to front full, nice height, shows control. Another 9.925. These are some variable quality 9.925s.
Harris – BB – UCLA – bhs loso bhs, solid – switch to split leap to full turn, hit – kickover with a lean correction – 1.5 dismount, short landing, slide back. 9.850
Frazier – FX – Cal – DLO, hit, controls landing – switch ring to switch 1/2 to 1/2 turn sissone, great position – front tuck through to double tuck, great landings.
And we have a 10.000 for Frazier. You felt like it was coming this whole meet, and it won’t be the last.
Cal goes 49.675 on floor. UCLA 49.450 on beam, seemed like it was on track for a bigger number with this meet, but a couple wobblies in there and then Harris has been wayyyy going for the sticks today and ended up short a couple times.
After 3
Cal 148.675
UCLA 148.150
UCLA will think a high 197 is still doable because 49.7+ floor seems very believable here. Cal will now expect a 198 from this one since that just means a 49.325 on beam.
Meanwhile over at Arizona/Oregon State, Carey is anchoring the floor lineup – front through to double pike, little rebound – switch 1/2 to popa, hit – double tuck, chest up, another little rebound. 9.925
Rotation 4
“You know there’s justice in the world because beam is a four letter word.” I don’t think I get it.
Li – BB – Cal – aerial, keeps moving to loso – full turn, smooth – split jump to split ring jump, under control – gainer tuck full, hop back. Solid start. 9.875
Lee – FX – UCLA – double tuck, chest up well, bounce back – front lay to front full, controls the step forward enough to stay in bounds – switch ring to switch 1/2, good – double pike, chest a bit down, hop to present. 9.900
Williams – BB – Cal – wolf double, hit – aerial to split, smooth, good front foot toe point – bhs loso, right on – switch to split – gainer full, a bit of pike, sticks it. 9.950
Andres – FX – UCLA – 2.5, good height, connects to front tuck, under control – double tuck, good landing control – switch side and a little cheat turn into the popa – switch. Good one. And 9.925.
Cesario – BB – Cal – full turn – bhs loso, secure – switch to switch 1/2, small lean correction – 1.5 dismount, step forward. 9.850
Rosen – FX – UCLA – DLO, chest down to land it, controls – double pike, again a bit of chest position, solid landing – switch ring to switch 1/2, good leap 180s – back 1.5 to front lay, doesn’t get much on the front lay, tucks it around.
9.925 even with that tucked combo. In this house, we give 9.925s to all floor routines.
Frazier – BB – Cal – full turn – aerial, continues into loso, small hip lean that she covers – split to split ring jump, another little check – 1.5 dismount, holds onto stick.9.975 with um, so at least one check, but also kind of another one.
Moors – FX – UCLA – front 2/1 to front tuck, steps forward OOB – lovely loso side pass – switch to switch 1/2 to wolf full, great – rudi, chest a bit down, good control. 9.800
Lauzon – BB – Cal – wolf turn, hit – bhs bhs loso, lovely, great foot position, secure – switch to split, good – 2/1 dismount, holds the stick, legs apart, but just able to bring the heels together. So, I mean, it was stronger than Frazier’s.
And it’s 10.000 for Lauzon. Which also clinches a program record for Cal.
Harris – FX – UCLA – DLO, pikes down at the end to get it, just small movement on landing – split leap full to high popa, great splits, a bit of travel – double tuck, bounce – back 1.5 to 1/2 to double stag, good height, bit of arm control. 9.925, obviously.
Perea – BB – Cal – wolf turn, hit – kickover, little lean to continue through to back tuck, holds with an adjustment – split with split to beat, hit – side somi to tuck 1.5, small hop forward. 9.925 why not.
Reed – FX – UCLA – DLO, good control – split leap full to wolf full, a bit under on the leap full position – front lay to rudi, chest up, good control. 9.950
So Cal goes 198.400, another program record set this weekend, eclipsing the old record of 198.275 from last March. I guess one would classify that as the kind of score they needed.
UCLA also ends up with 197.775 despite the struggle vault rotation thanks to this meet, which is a totally useful score for them to secure a spot in the top 10 this week.

Fucking basketbal 😡😡😡
It started on time on one of the other P12 channels; sorry too late to help you!
I give up…trying to figure out how to watch Cal & UCLA. Wwwwwaaaaaaahhh
PAC 12 network or the PAC 12 now up. If you don’t pay for one of those, then wait a day or so and it’ll show up illegally on YouTube in full.
I use a VPN set to England and watch live on the Pac-12 international YouTube.
I really wish they would scrap NQS. Drop the high and low scores and average the rest. More than half of the season should count.
Agreed! Then make regional assignments based 100% on ranking (subbing teams as needed due to hosting).
I also want regular season first team all Americans to automatically qualify to nationals if their team doesn’t make it. It is so hard for individuals not on top teams to make it through. They can add a third session at Nationals for individual qualifiers.
Are the All-American teams announced early enough to use that for Nationals qualification?
NCAA men’s gymnastics actually does do a separate event finals at their Nationals. I’m pretty sure the schedule is Friday night qualifying (team & individual events) & all-around final, Saturday team finals, & Sunday individual event finals.
There are All-American awards for regular season and All-American awards given out only at Nationals. The regular season All-Americans would absolutely be early enough to use. I actually like that idea. The one person that comes to mind this year is Ella Hodges of Ohio State on floor. She’s had a bunch of 9.95s (probably deserved at least one ten, but hasn’t received one). I feel like her routine is one you want competing at Nationals against the best of the best.
Women also used to have event finals. I really wish they would bring them back. It was a fun event that was fairly light-hearted and gymnasts could throw skills they may not normally do in the team competition.
Or maybe NQS+Season Average then divide total by 2. That way every meet would be included to final tally instead of only 6.
Why? That would just be counting scores 2-6 twice into your score. Every meet should count equally. You can throw out a high and a low to try to get rid of outliers or just make all meets count. Other sports count every game and I think gymnastics should too.
Anyone know if Malia Hargrove is injured? She isn’t in line ups and there is someone in a boot on Arizona’s sideline. Not sure if it’s her or not because the camera is too far away.
After watching Warga and Mintz go down on Friday for Ohio State, I don’t know how many more season ending injuries I can take! I hope everyone else can stay healthy, especially in these teams that are fighting so hard and are up and coming.
‘2024 Nastia Was Already Retired When I Was Born Cup’
LOL!
I watched the beginning and didn’t even see Nastia, if she was there. USA Gymnastics ran commercials right after the anthem so she could have done her welcome while they did that. There wasn’t commentary either, which doesn’t really support Nastia’s goal to give level 10 gymnasts the sort of treatment senior elite get.
Nastia was there. There are multiple picture of her standing by a big pink sign.
Jade Carry’s gymnastics is so gross. Why can’t the judges see it?
How about we don’t talk terribly about gymnasts doing things we can’t do ourselves?
