In today’s first semifinal, Utah starts out on vault, Michigan State on floor, Towson on beam, and Maryland on bars. If nothing else interesting happens, Michigan State will want a lead on Utah after 1 with a big floor score to show competitiveness for Sunday.

Sam tells us that regionals is more pressure than the Olympics. It’s giving “it’s harder to win the SEC Championship than Nationals.”

Towson 195.050

So Utah and Michigan State advance in our least drama-filled meet of regionals thus far. Up next, Denver and UCLA will try to get weird for us.

Beam is Arizona State’s best event, so if they’re going to be in this in more than a “we’re relying on someone else’s meltdown” kind of way, they’ll want to be ahead of Denver’s vault score after 1. UCLA will expect to lead after 1, starting on floor.

After 1
UCLA 49.575
Arizona State 49.250
Washington 49.125
Denver 49.025

The news here is Denver trailing after 1. They will take solace in the vault scoring being way tighter for those last few y1.5s than we saw on other events in that first rotation. If that stays the same, other teams will have 9.7 moments when they get to vault as well.

Hutchinson UB – Denver – maloney to pak, very small leg break on pak – 1/2 turn on low – hits cast hs on high – DLO, nice height, tries to hold the landing but an arm circle and then a little foot movement. 9.800

SKW – BB – Washington – aerial to bhs loso, nice – hits switch to split comfortably – side aerial to 1.5, little hop. 9.875

Mangahas – FX – ASU – FTDT, bounce back, some leg separation – front tuck through to double tuck, hit securely, chest down and some feet – nice wolf full positions – 9.875

After 2
UCLA 98.725
Arizona State 98.625
Denver 98.275
Washinton 97.975

Now if I’m Denver I’m a little worried because, even though they still get to do floor and the scores are sailing there, they mussst have a good beam now.

Rotation 3

Pires – FX – Washington – back 1.5 to front lay under control, not the highest – switch side 1/2 to straddle jump – doubel tuck, chest down, lunge forward. 9.750

Mangahas – VT – ASU – nice stick on her yfull, good dynamics. 9.850, thought that could go 9.9 compared to the other yfulls we’ve seen

Hebinck – BB – Denver – kickover to bhs, secure – switch to switch side, a little crooked on switch side position – full turn, hit – beat -gainer pike, stuck. 9.925

Rosen falls on her maloney in the third spot for UCLA. Well, it wouldn’t be a UCLA bars lineup this year without a fall in there.

Reeves – VT – ASU – y tuck 1.5, leg separation on the block, hop forward. 9.825

Ulrich – BB – Denver – bhs loso, secure – full turn, hit – switch leans through it to a switch side and now a big lean, lean back and leg up wobble -aerial to beat jump, hit – 1.5 dismount, holds stick with lean. 9.750

Russon finishes floor for Washington with dobuel pike, chest down, controls front foot

Scahrf – VT – ASU – yfull, comes in a little short with a hop forward. 9.825

Frazier – UB – UCLA – goos first hs – maloney to pak, smooth – saves her 1/2 turn on low bar with an arch – DLO, bounce back and then another small hop. Saved the meet though. 9.725

Mabanta – BB – Denver – full turn – bhs loso secure landing – split leap to switch 1/2 to beat, like the speed, a little unde ron switch 1/2 position – gainer pike, stuck. 9.950

Not saying I thought Harris should be a 10 or anything, but the range between Frazier and Esparza’s survive routines and Harris’s good hit is………?

Navarro – FX – Washington – double tuck, hit – switch side to popa, solid position – 1.5 to layout, lower amplituder on layout – double pike, chest down, shows control. 9.900

After 3
Arizona State 147.825
UCLA 147.800
Denver 147.700
Washington 147.500

UMMMMMM. Suddenly if I’m Denver I’m feeling pretty good about life because of how floor scoring has been going, even though 3rd place, and if I’m UCLA I’m deeply anxious about this beam rotation.

Rotation 4

Lee – BB – UCLA – aerial, wobble, no combination – redoes the aerial into split jump – bhs loso is smooth – swtich to straddle is good – full turn, check – gainer full, step back. A hit but a shakier one from Lee. 9.700

Iwai – FX – Denver – 1.5 to layout to stag, nice – switch full, gets it around – double tuck, good control and hit leaps, a good one. 9.900

Innes – VT – Washington – yfull, holds the stick well, chest forward. 9.800

Andres – BB – UCLA – hits switch 1/2  – kickover to korbut is one of her smoothest – full turn, kind of a big lean to the side – 2/1, step back and then another small step – 9.750

Samiley – UB – ASU – short hs on high – blind to jaeger, good height, into overshoot – short hs on high – DLO, stuck. 9.900

SKW – VT – Washington – yfull, good stick. Nice one. 9.850

Alipio – BB – UCLA – aerial to loso, connects, just a bit of knee in aerial – spl;it to switch to beat, good – gainer tuck full, holds it. That’s the one they needed. 9.925

Mangahas – UB – ASU – piked jaeger to overshoot, hit – nice hs on high – FTDT, stuck. Strong. 9.900. They’re not letting anyone in.

Malabuyo – BB – UCLA – hits wolf turn – bhs loso, huge break, leg up to horizontal and an arm wave – aerial to beat jump – split jump to split ring jump, good position but another wobble – gainer full, stuck. Still gets 9.775.

Clark – UB – ASU – needs a hit but only an average hit – good first hs – blind to jaeger, close but caught – pak, leg separation – tight 1/2 turn on low bar – DLO, step back. Well it was a tighhhhttt routine but she only needed a 9.725.

Hutchinson – FX – Denver – they’re already though with a lead on UCLA – front 2/1, good form, bit of a slide forward – switch 1/2 to split jump full, very good – back 1.5 to front lay, hit – rudi to straddle jump, nice, will give Denver the session win.

9.800 for Clark, enough to eliminate UCLA.

FINAL
Denver 197.275
Arizona State 197.150
UCLA 197.050
Washington 196.650

Well well well well well well well.

Bailey Libby’s floor will finish out the meet – front 2/1, good control – back 1.5 to layout, also securely hit – switch ring to switch 1/2 – rudi, chest down, little steppy.

UCLA eliminated by a tenth by Arizona State, another huge upset in the regional semifinals. UCLA caught by the counting 9.7s, counting two of them on bars and beam. They went to shaky-nervy town in the second half of this meet, especially on beam.

Now Malabuyo can go to Doha? She’s tied for the lead on bars, but we have another session to go and she’s behind Mangahas on the tiebreak.

Chae Campbell would have the floor tiebreak among the UCLA gymnasts if that 9.950 ends up standing.

I really have to hand it to “only scoring landings and completely ignoring everything else.” You’ve made these regionals very exciting.

Next up we have Florida and Missouri saying not you too Georgia.

Florida 49.575
Georgia 49.450
Missouri 49.300
Iowa State 48.975

Florida regional judging saying don’t think we can’t go crazy just because it’s regionals. Missouri will be a bit concerned by that floor score and trailing Georgia and will hope floor was just a little tighter than the others today

Wells for Clemson as an individual on bars, hits tkatchev to overshoot – up to verticla on high bar with some back position – FTDT, holds it with a little deep lean. Now Clark on floor, DLO, good control, chest down slightly – great lift in split leap full to popa – front lay to front full to  misses the punch and sits down the front tuck

Rotation 2

LaClair – FX – Georgia – front full through to 2/1, under control – switch side 1/2 to straddle – front…rudi? misses her punch into a loso and tucks it. Still gets 9.750

Adams – BB – Iowa St – bhs loso, lean correction – switch to switch, hit – aerial, big lean forward at the hips – gainer full, holds stick. 9.800

Lazzari – UB – Florida – hits first hs – tkatchev, solid – toe on to pak, some back position but hit – pretty short cast hs on high – FTDT, little hop back and then additional hop forward. 9.725 that will count

After 3
Florida 148.450
Missouri 148.150
Georgia 148.050
Iowa State 147.525

Missouri will like the possibilities of going to the gingerbread house that is beam scoring in this session, but it’s still beam and they’ll still have to not go to pieces to avoid joining Michigan and UCLA over on the side. Georgia’s bars NQS is better than Missouri’s beam NQS, so Georgia will feel alive.

Schreiber – BB – Missouri – full turn, good – bhs loso is on – switch 1/2 with a lean wobble and arm wave – split jump to split jump 3/4, lovely split position – beat to gainer full, stuck. 9.900 for Schreiber takes Missouri to 197.525 to Georgia’s 197.425. Big performance from Georgia, not quite enough.

FINAL

Auburn got through that bars without counting a miss but a lot of 9.7s and another sub-49 rotation has dropped them back. They will expect a big score for a hit beam rotation, but they’ll need to hope for some help.

  1. Does anyone know when Lali Dekanoidze from UNC will compete bars? I don’t know with what team she’s competing.

  2. I wish John Roth. would talk a little less about scoring. It’s nonstop with the “they’ll need to do better than that to get in that top two.”

  3. I appreciate having all the scores on screen, but I would like to submit a request that they be along the bottom rather than the side of the screen so that they don’t crowd out the stream boxes so much.

  4. Emma Silberman of MD with a 9.95 on vault! That should put her in the mix for nationals. She beat Kellerman in the first session. The Big Ten seems so much stronger across the board this year.

  5. My goodness, I wish Kathy didn’t feel like she has to fill every second of air time.

    1. We have very few meets left with Kathy commentating. So I will take every second of the legend speaking on air. She is going to be missed.

    2. She is and has been THE BEST commentator on gymnastics. Period. She cannot be replaced and will be desperately missed by all sentient humans/gymnastics fans.
      You’re a moron.

  6. Emily @ UCLA has the biggest ice pack I’ve ever seen taped to her knee. Hope she’s okay.

  7. Great meet for ASU!

Also, gutted that Selena Harris won’t qualify in the AA. Although, maybe this will mean Malabuyo can go get that Olympic spot?!?!

  8. Did Bailey Libby change her floor music? I remember it being Sail earlier this year.

  9. I have found myself cheering for the “State” schools. Go Buckeyes! Go Sparty! Go Sun Devils!

  10. Interested to see if Floor scoring stays like this for the rest of the Florida Regional. Seems low compared to the other events. Not sure why Missouri can’t get the scores.

      1. I almost agreed, then they gave LaClair a 9.75 for a missed element. While Horton got a 9.825 for a fully hit routine? unacceptable.

    1. Absolutely disheartening. MSU not going above 9.9 as well first event. But then Utah going 9.95 for same quality. #consistencymatters

  11. I don’t think comparing Lily Smith to Nastia is a good thing when we know Nastia looked like that due to ED.

    1. That’s not fair. They even specified arm positions and fingers. She’s also a strong front tumbler? We cant compare gymnasts to previous greats when they have similar gymnastics?

    2. And, far worse, Liukin was LIONIZED and FETED for looking like the anorexic/bulimic she was.
      Ugh.

  12. How can you get over 9.8 with a wobble and a large bend on the Balance Beam. The scores for Florida have been insane during this meet.

    1. A Cal gymnast in the Cal Regional scored a 9.85 without a true acro series, so yeah…

  13. My heart breaks for Georgia. They had a great meet and I hope they are proud with how they finished.

I’m also thrilled that Lily Smith will be at Nationals no matter what. She totally deserves it!

  14. Naya Howard appreciation post — 9.9s on all three of her events. She was lights out tonight!

  15. Congrats to Florida and Mizzou. Scores got wild in the evening session. I was at both sessions in Gainesville and here’s how I rank teams based on what I saw across both sessions:

    1) Utah
    2) Florida
    3) Michigan State
    4) Missouri

Hoping judging is consistent on Sunday.

  16. I know there’s about a .025% chance of it mattering with the way things stand now, but Stanford should be ahead of Cal right now

  17. This break before the last rotation lined up perfectly with the end of the Iowa/UConn squeaky shoes game. NCAA women sports!
