Gainer Layout 1/1 (Steingruber)

Balance beam

Skill type

Known as
Gainer layout 1/1 (full)
Gainer straight
Gainer layout 1/1 to end of the beam

Note: Clarifying that this dismount is taken to the end of the beam can be important as, in non-elite levels of gymnastics, a gainer layout full to the side of the beam is a common, horrible dismount.

Named after
Giulia Steingruber (SUI)

The much-maligned gainer layout has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, particularly among gymnasts who aren’t so much with the tumbling. Like its non-twisting sister, the gainer layout 1/1 has been downgraded starting in 2017, a reaction to the growing abuse of this relatively simplistic-looking family of dismounts and affirmation of the Women’s Technical Committee’s mission to see as few different routine compositions as possible.

The gainer layout 1/1 is far from simple, but it is also nearly impossible to perform in an actual layout position or with any kind of execution non-ugliness, simply becoming an obvious pike in nearly all circumstances. The inherent sloppiness of the skill may also have contributed to its persona non grata status with the WTC.
